[Bug 428231] Re: Badly under-reports bandwidth usage.

2010-12-25 Thread Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: azureus

Limits set to 260 kilobytes per second down and 50 up. Reporting usage
in that general vicinity. Over 3 minutes, /proc/net/dev reports 325.4
kilobytes per second down, and 73.1 up. That's 25% more for down, and
46% more for up than azureus is reporting.

I do currently have a bunch of active torrents, and I suspect the
problem is less significant with fewer torrents = less overhead. But
  still wrong.

(Subtracted the 0.5 kB/s I'm seeing in /proc/net/dev with netstat -tuapn
and route -n showing nothing. Weird.)

@mpt: if we do that, we'll lose the ability to jump from a topic to
another ; a handy feature IMO. Do you think there could be an
alternative to that?

Anyway, I need a final design suggestion, then I'll start working on
this :)

[Bug 678319] Re: Integrate update-manager in Ubuntu Software Center

2010-11-22 Thread Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi
>From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareUpdates:
"Since before the initial release of Ubuntu Software Center, we have considered
integrating updates into that interface instead of having a dedicated
interface. However, this turns out to be less compelling than it might first
appear. It is not a serious use case to be reminded of updates and to decide,
upon that reminder, to install or remove other software at the same time. And
the extra quantity of interface in Ubuntu Software Center would be a heavy
cognitive burden for people who never need to install extra software at all."

I hope you'll understand that update-manager won't be integrated into USC.

[Bug 662817] [NEW] Ubuntu fails to boot with UUID

2010-10-18 Thread Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi
Public bug reported:

When booting Ubuntu, an error message is shown that is like: "udevadm trigger
is not permitted when udev is unconfigured".
After a little while, the system is thrown back at BusyBox, stating that it
gave up waiting for the root device:

Workaround: change the grub line to say "root=/dev/sdaX" (where X is the
number of the partition Ubuntu is in) instead of UUID.

[Bug 661365] Re: Resume from suspend and hibernate on MacBookPro7, 1 doesn't work

The problem does not present itself using the upstream kernel version.
This could mean that the bug got fixed in 2.6.36 (as 11.04 is still
using .35 ATM), or that the stock Ubuntu kernel has a faulty patch.

+ The problem is that the file structure on the usb differs to what is on a
livecd and apt-setup is unaware of this.
+
+ Workaround:
+ To resolve this, simply copy the contents of filesystem.squashfs on the iso
into the usb stick. Luckily the parts it is reading from this appear to be just
apt config files so the fact that you loose symbolic links and permissions etc
on a FAT32 usb stick shouldn't matter.
+
+ On your current Linux installation: (If you don't have one you could use a
live cd off a different usb stick)
+ 1. Create USB stick.
+ 2. Type in a terminal:
+ sudo mkdir iso
+ sudo mkdir source
+ sudo mount -o loop pathtoiso/ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64.iso iso
+ sudo mount -t squashfs -o loop iso/casper/filesystem.squashfs source
+ sudo cp -pLr source/* pathtomountedusbstick
+
+ (Thanks Klaas Hartmann for the workaround :))

[Bug 659993] [NEW] The "Updates" information is confusing for technical packages

2010-10-13 Thread Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

When viewing the details page for a technical package, the Updates information
is as follows:
"Canonical does not provide updates for A free implementation of the OpenGL API
-- Extra DRI modules. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
I don't think that "A free implementation of the OpenGL API -- Extra DRI
modules" is adequate -- it should rather be (in this case)
"libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental".

[Bug 657949] [NEW] Screen brightness on MacBookPro7, 1 goes below 100% immediately after gdm login

2010-10-10 Thread Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

What happens in order:
1. The computer is booted (MacBookPro 7,1).
2. When arriving to the gdm login, I can notice the brightness is at its
maximum. Trying to lower the brightness doesn't do anything (but it shows the
notification, so it's not a hotkey issue).
3. Immediately after typing my password, the brightness goes brutally down to
~40% (just a guess). When trying to change it back to 100% (either with the
hotkeys or the brightness applet), I find that the "new" 100% is lower than the
"previous" 100%. That means I can't change it back to 100%.

Please tell me if you need more information.

[Bug 657327] [NEW] Ubiquity's "simple" partitionning screen shows partition name and type

2010-10-09 Thread Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

As seen in the attached screenshot, the Ubuntu partition has this text:
"Ubuntu
/dev/sda (ext4)
8.6 GB"

Why the "/dev/sda (ext4)"? It is not needed and can cause confusion for the
average user.
Moreover, the "8.6 GB" bit is also not needed in this case, since Ubuntu will
be the only system installed here.

I'll fix this in a bzr branch, but I first want input from developers
and designers. So share your opinions :)

[Bug 657326] [NEW] Ubiquity's "simple" partitionning screen always asks you which drive to use

2010-10-09 Thread Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

As seen in the attached screenshot, the simple partitionning screen
offers you what drive you want to use. But in my case (and a lot of
people, I suppose), there is only one disk! Why not simply say "Ubuntu
will be installed in given drive" or even "Ubuntu will be installed in
the only hard drive of this computer"? (since a lot of people won't even
know what the hard drive name would mean)

I'll fix this in a bzr branch, but I first want input from developers
and designers. So share your opinions :)

This is because update-manager actually performs an commit operation,

upgraded. However, I don't know if software-center would handle this

[Bug 639810] [NEW] X crashes when NM asks for wifi keyring password

2010-09-15 Thread Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When Network Manager asks for the wireless keyring password, X crashes
immediately after typing the password and pressing 'Enter'.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Enable automatic login.
2. Reboot or "sudo service gdm restart". NetworkManager should ask for wifi
keyring password.
3. Type the password and press 'Enter'.
4. X crashes and you are returned to GDM greeter. At this point, the login
keyring is already unlocked (since you type your password through GDM), but
nm-applet runs without showing an icon. It must then be killed with "killall
nm-applet -s 9".

[Bug 634449] Re: Searching for "lib" crashes Ubuntu Software Center

After a little investigating, I found that this doesn't hang
indefinitely, it just takes too much time, and it gives the impression
of a freeze. However, the code you gave greatly improve the situation,
so I patched it in my branch. Thank you, mvo!

[Bug 634164] Re: Many useful packages are said "technical" and not displayed by default

2010-09-09 Thread Mohamed Amine IL Idrissi
So, for example "nethack-console" should not be technical, even if it's
console-based? Non-technical items are mostly graphical applications,
and it wouldn't be good to show terminal apps to the end user, as he
will not use them anyway and will only be confused as to which app he
should use.

Nicolas, technical items are items that do not have an entry in app-

make an entry there.
