[Bug 522119] Re: kernel crashes when toggling off wlan on Eee PC 701SD

2010-05-21 Thread MrAuer
Im sorry, but I cannot test it anymore. I dont have the machine, I
mailed it to the person I installed it for shortly after reporting the
bug. If it comes back to me for updating at some point I can try Lucid
Lynx on it from a USB stick and see if that fixes it. As it is the
machine is on the other side of the country ;)

Thank you.

How would I go about to disable the Fn-F2 keycombo completely, so it
would not be pressed accidentally? It is fine if it could only be
toggled via BIOS - better than to have the machine hang if accidentally
pressed.

[Bug 522119] [NEW] kernel crashes when toggling off wlan on Eee PC 701SD

2010-02-15 Thread MrAuer
Public bug reported:

This bug affects at least Jaunty, Karmic and Lucid Lynx alpha 2 - I
tested the behaviour on each with the latest kernels for the releases. I
also tested its behaviour with EB4 that is based on Debian unstable,
that kernel crashes as well. I suspect that Hardy is affected as well,
because the owner of the laptop reported it hanging at times - Im
supposing it happened after toggling the wlan off but am unable to
confirm that.

Hardware affected is an Eee PC 701SD, with Realtek RTL8187SE chipset.
The wlan itself works, and I am able to turn the card on using the Fn-F2
hotkeys, but when turning wlan off it causes a kernel panic and hard
locks the machine necessitating poweroff via holding the power key for 5
seconds. This happens both when Im connected to a wireless network as
well as when I am not, and it happens every time wlan is toggled off.

This machine is not my own and I need to send it back to the person I
was upgrading it for, so I dont know how much additional information I
can give later - I have the laptop for a couple more days tops. I think
I will have to inform the owner about the problem and ask her not to use
the wlan toggle key. My own Eee pcs, the regular 701 4GB model and 901
20GB model are not affected by this as they have a different wlan
chipset, and after
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/404626 was fixed,
they now work perfectly. From browsing forums I found out that other
owners of this specific 701SD model also report that toggling wlan off
causes a kernel crash every time, for example here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8819267#post8819267 others also
tell of problems connecting to a WEP network - I have only used in WPA2
networks and there it worked, even though it sometimes drops the
connection even when the laptop is right next to the router.

I installed kernel-crashdump and caused the panic, I will attach the
Apport-generated crashdump. I tried to do that via Apports automatic bug
reporting as well, but Apport itself reported an error connecting to the
bug server and crashed when it had sent about 98% of the kernel
crashdump, so Im not going to try that again as it took about an hour
for the slow lappie to process that in any case.

The exact time of the crash was 21.00.54 on 14th of February. If you
need additional information, please request it as soon as possible as I
cannot keep the machine for much longer.

Yep, thats true. I will look into it today. My own Eee 701 4GB and 901
both work perfectly now...Its the bloody Realtek chipset on the 701SD ;)
I suppose the SD model of the 701 is not so common either, since the 900
series was introduced and the older ones phased out around the time.

[Bug 404626] Re: Turning wifi "off" using Fn+F2 on Eee PC with Ralink rt2860 results in kernel panic (rfkill)

2010-02-11 Thread MrAuer
Kernel 2.6.31-19, Eee PC 701SD with 8GB SSD, toggling wlan with Fn-F2
still causes a kernel panic. Vanilla Karmic. I just tried it now. I
don't know if I have time for extensive troubleshooting, since this is
not my own laptop, but I was supposed to upgrade it to Karmic and then
mail it back ASAP. I did not remember that it had a different wireless
card from my own 701 4GB and 901, which both now work fine, wlan toggle
and all.

So it is still NOT fixed for the 701SD with the RTL8187SE ,and the crash
happens even when its not connected to any network when toggling, as
well as when it is. Ill see if I need to mail the machine back today, or
if I can keep it for a few more days to get more info (now I have just
gotten a black screen whenever I toggle wlan off, have not yet tried to
generate a crash report).

I suppose I could see if I could find a replacement memory stick cheaply
and check if switching the memory has any effect on this - Ive not had
reported errors on memory test though, but havent run them for extended
periods. One would think that others would be reporting similar crashes
if this was a common issue, as Eee 901s are widely used - and issues
with the wlan toggle generating kernel panics were widely reported here
too.

Probably around 20:10 time. Ill attach dmesg.

[Bug 489558] [NEW] Kernel panic occurs randomly under normal use on Eee pc 901, Ubuntu 9.10 fully patched

2009-11-28 Thread MrAuer
Public bug reported:

About once to several times per day of normal use, my Eee pc 901 totally
hangs ie. kernel panic. When this happens, I cannot even get into
virtual terminals, system does not respond to SysRq magic keys either
(ie, I cannot reboot with the SysRq keystrokes either). Only way to shut
down is to hold down power button for several seconds.

There is no way to reproduce the bug reliably - it happens both with
Compiz on (with greater frequency perhaps, dont know) and without it.
Usually I am browsing the web and maybe listening to music on Audacious
as the machine hangs - screen freezes, X stops responding (cannot
restart X either, SysRq keys dont respond), and sound loops and keeps
looping until the powerdown.

I have had similar crashes with Jaunty as well, and was told then to
wait until Karmic for this to be probably fixed. It was then thought it
might be something relating to the poor Intel video drivers under
Jaunty. This happens completelly similarly under Karmic now. My Eee 701,
on the other hand, works perfectly without such crashes.

I will attach the logs on the following post.

** Affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu)

[Bug 404626] Re: Turning wifi "off" using Fn+F2 on Eee PC with Ralink rt2860 results in kernel panic (rfkill)

2009-11-09 Thread MrAuer
Yup, this still happens with 2.6.31-15-generic I installed from Karmic-
proposed - disabling wlan still crashes kernel.. I guess the "fix"
reported earlier was only because there was no ralink module / no driver
present in the kernel for testing the Huawei fix.

Any hope of getting the fix in the same kernel update as the Huawei fix

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2009-11-08 Thread MrAuer
My lsusb:
Bus 002 Device 006: ID 12d1:1003 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E220 HSDPA Modem
/ E270 HSDPA/HSUPA Modem

My connection now works, with the caveats above - ie. NM did not
automatically detect it the first time, it did not show up in Mobile
broadband devices list before creating a profile for it - with Generic
device, then clicking Autoconnect on, at which point it did detect the
Huawei and did connect.

My friend with the e160 is not reporting success yet, though I cannot
know if she is trying to do the configuring correctly via NM.

[Bug 446146] Re: Several Huawei USB dongle don't work with kernel 2.6.31-12.40 (2.6.31.1 update related)

2009-11-08 Thread MrAuer
This really should have been fixed before release. Lots of people are having a
difficult time because of this issue.
Ive just been trying to tell, over IRC, how to get the kernel 2.6.31-15
installed when you have no network connection as the Huawei modem was the sole
way to connect.

Now she has it installed, Huawei e160 modem, but Network manager does
not automatically see the modem, nor does it ask for the ISP info
automatically. She tells me NM sees that there is some modem, but does
not configure it correctly, nor does it bring up a connection. On Jaunty
all this happened automatically.

I have a e220, this had problems also - NM did not automatically
configure it, I needed to add the connection manually, and even then it
did not tell me I have a Huawei connected until AFTER I had configured
the connection (entered the ISP info and so on), and after that I had to
tell NM to Auto-connect or it would not connect.

There is still something fishy going on. Im in a bit of a hurry now, Ill
try to see about logs later. I cannot get to her logs, she lives across
the country and has no net conn on the machine now (with the e160)

Any suggestions on how to proceed to get wlan working, preferably so also

2009-11-01 Thread MrAuer
Addition, even thou perhaps OT - I have now tried both 2.6.31-5 and 2.6.32-rc5
kernels -
I can turn the wifi led on and off, BUT Network manager never sees any wireless
connection. None.
I can turn it on and off as many times as I wish, but NM never registers the
connection - not even when I boot again with the wlan on. Anyone know why that
happens? Does anyone else have this problem?
I dont know how I could troubleshoot this - what logs to look to, as nothing
crashes...NM doesnt even show any wireless networks, not even greyed out
"Wireless" - just "Wired network" and "3G"...

At least with these two kernels the Huawei modem works so I can get
online, albeit at a slower speed.

On the Eee pc now - I have the Huawei E220 dongle, I installed the 2.6.31-5
kernel.
The modem worked on first connection, both the USB memory part and the modem
showed up - the modem had been configured already previously on Jaunty so no
configuration was needed now. It works normally as far as I can tell.

Cant say about E169, I dont have one of those.

[Bug 404626] Re: Turning wifi "off" using Fn+F2 on Eee PC with Ralink rt2860 results in kernel panic (rfkill)

2009-10-28 Thread MrAuer
With the mainline 2.6.31-15 kernel someone provided above, switching
wlan on and off no longer crashes the machine, BUT network manager does
not see the wlan after turning it on again. I think this might be the
same issue that in Jaunty needed the kernel boot option "options pciehp
pciehp_force=1 pciehp_poll_mode=1" ? Could that be fixed as well, or do
others get their network back up after re-enabling wlan radio? For me,
network manager only reconnects after resume from suspend, but not after
re-enabling wifi radio.

Now if I only could get my Huawei modem to work as well ;)

[Bug 404626] Re: Turning wifi "off" using Fn+F2 on Eee PC with Ralink rt2860 results in kernel panic (rfkill)

2009-10-27 Thread MrAuer
My Eee 901 also periodically hangs when suspending, or resuming from
suspend. Is this perhaps related? I took a picture of the screen the one
time I was able to get into a terminal before it went completely
unresponsive. Sadly the picture is out of focus so its hard to make out
what it says. Last few lines are something about devkit-power and
libgobject. Ill include the pic anyway. Other times the machine simply
hangs, a few times Ive clicked Suspend, after which nothing at all
happens and I cant open the shutdown menu anymore. Killing X at this
point leads to hanging and only powerdown from powerbutton works. Other
times again, wlan goes off, machine suspends, comes back from suspend
fine and even wlan comes back up.

I would really rather have the release set back and these issues fixed.
I had serious issues with Jaunty as well, and after latest updates to
Jaunty, my wlan stopped working completely in that as well - I can
switch it on and off but network manager never registers it - which is
why I bit the bullet and installed Karmic RC anyway. Which did not much
improve the situation, sadly. At least suspend worked on Jaunty...

Also, does the "feel free to run the 2.6.31.5 mainline kernel build:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.31.5/"; fix the
suspend issue? Should I make another bug report of the suspend issue, or
is there already one open? Is that going to be fixed? I will try that
kernel anyway, cant hurt. Will report my experience back.

Also, I agree with what Andrew Wyatt said above. I was waiting for
Karmic to fix the Intel video driver bugs and the periodic hard locks I
had with Jaunty, but instead now it is worse with Karmic - and Jaunty
updates stopped wlan working as well. That it might work on some other
netbooks is hardly comforting. I have been using Ubuntu since Warty, and
have installed it for several other people. The bugs that are present in
final releases has been the biggest complaint for several people - and
personally, I feel that making Ubuntu more stable and bug free should be
more important than keeping some release date. One person of these
actually went and bought a Mac after some frustrating stability issues
across 2 releases (Hardy and Intrepid).

So please consider fixing these issues before release rather than after.

2009-10-25 Thread MrAuer
Confirm on Eee pc 901 with Karmic Release Candidate. (Its been that way
since Jaunty unless one installed some scripts to fix it, like Fewts
addons for the Eee from Statux)

See here for Statux's Fewts (angry) comments on this issue (he stopped
maintaining the Eee pc addons due to this issue among others) -
http://www.fewt.com/2009/10/i-give-up.html

"Every time something in the OS changes, Eee PC Utils gets the blame for
"breaking" people's computers even though whatever I release typically
doesn't even alter the code being reported. Even though I've published
work-around after work-around on the Wiki for Linux bugs like the famous
bluetooth bug in 2.6.28, the WIFI hotplug bug (pciehp force), or linking
to the fix for the Intel video driver bugs, its still considered my
fault in the eyes of the users when the screen won't turn off and on
(xrandr reports a protocol error that it didn't a few weeks ago) or
their WIFI won't come on after they turn it off (because the kernel
pciehp module is broken).

Now that Karmic is coming Eee users are looking forward to having 2
Radio Kill devices for Bluetooth, and 2 for WIFI. Yes, this is in a
production released kernel, yes, the interfaces are provided by
different modules (eeepc-laptop exposes them as do the driver modules),
yes their naming and function is of course not named using a reasonably
grep-able syntax, and yes they do actually work differently somehow."
(theres more but see the link, he complains a bit in addition to
discussing the issue ;) )

Please, please fix this urgently!
This is a real showstopper and it should not be too hard to fix.
Most other things seemed to work ok on Karmic RC as of yesterday, but as long
as there are bugs that cause my laptop to totally hang, I cannot upgrade to it.
As is known, Jaunty also has its share of bugs on Eee pcs, so I would very much
like to get an usable Ubuntu on it - I for one have been hopefully waiting for
Karmic to finally work flawlessly on my Eees.

I for one need to be able to switch off the wlan, since I also use a 3g
modem where wlan is not available. It is not very cool to have your
machine hang, reboot and only then be able to use 3g without wlan
drawing extra power.

[Bug 412907] Re: X crashes and system is only responsive via sys-req on keyboard

2009-08-27 Thread MrAuer
I should get Karmic alpha 4 installed on my memory card as well..
I wasnt able to get it on a USB stick using unetbootin, I guess it was because
Karmic used GRUB2.
Ill have to look into it and try running Karmic (I guess you could run it off a
CD and then make a bootable USB via Karmic itself). I wouldnt mind upgrading to
that if it just works without crashing.

2009-08-23 Thread MrAuer
:(
Does this mean I need to open a new bug report again?
I do not have UXA enabled, and I am still getting these crashes and hard locks
on Jaunty.
I dont know why Apport does not generate a report upon crash, though - except
when it hard locks - I guess nothing gets done at that point as even the kernel
is unresponsive to SysRq key combos.

I am still trying to get a usable backtrace somehow (I am running Apport
in the background all the time) but haven't yet had the time to setup
ssh on this machine and wait for it to crash. In the hard lock case I
don't know if I would even be able to log in after the fact.

2009-08-18 Thread MrAuer
OK..
I have now tried running apport, but so far it has not generated any reports,
even thou X has crashed twice. First time hard lock, had to power down. Second
time, dropped to login prompt again, but still no report..

Completely random still, like with Liam O'Reilly. I have found a few
other people (on IRC) who have the same crash behaviour also on Eee pc
901, with the intel 945g chipset - one of these people used Debian
(testing I think) instead of Ubuntu. They have had that present also at
least during Jaunty cycle, I had these crashes happen also on Intrepid
(reason I upgraded).

I downloaded Karmic alpha 4, I will put it on a USB stick today and try
it out. Alpha 3 crashed constantly and had issues with display going
dark for a couple seconds at time, I will see if those have been
resolved.

2009-08-13 Thread MrAuer
I am also now waiting for my Eee 901 to crash again, now I have X server
and display driver debug symbols installed and Apport running. I hope it
crashes as often as yesterday now that I can hope to trace it :)

On this machine, the crashes happen more often with XFCE than Gnome (I
have tried bot Xubuntu and regular Ubuntu on it) - even when I do not
have XFCEs own compositing, nor Compiz, on. Under Gnome using Compiz
perhaps made the crashes more common - and under Gnome, I often get a
hard lock instead of just X crashing and restarting, like under XFCE.

I will report here when I get more data.

These are definitely a cause for a serious crash, these have happened always
with Jaunty.
The log entries always looked the same right before X goes.
With vanilla Ubuntu, and not Xfce, this tends to cause a hard lock, ie. even
Alt-SysRq-K does not work, but you need to hold the power button for 5 secs to
hard shut down.

2009-08-12 Thread MrAuer
My Asus Eee pc 901 with the Intel 945Gme chipset has its Xserver crash several
times per day.
This behaviour has never disappeared and my original report was marked as a
duplicate of a bug that has been fixed now.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/337116

Today X has crashed 3 times, this is syslog around the latest event. No Compiz,
Xubuntu 9.04 (had vanilla Ubuntu earlier, same thing, but with Gnome the
crashes were less frequent). I installed and updated to latest packages
yesterday, after trying Karmic daily build (hard locks all the time with that,
no go yet). Presently, this crash behaviour makes this computer preetty
unreliable in use.
I have the exact same install setup on my Eee pc 701, and that does not crash
or lock up.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 348428 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/348428

Yesterday I downgraded the Intel driver package only to Intrepids version
xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4 , howto here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4

I have now had the eee pc 901 running for 18 hours, and it hasnt yet
crashed the X. I even installed Compiz to try it out and it worked too,
albeit a little slow (Hardy with Compiz was lots smoother). Uninstalled
it after trying, XFCE with its built in compositing is enough - have
that on now. Ill see if the crashes happen again later or if the older
driver helps.

[Bug 307306] Re: upgrade to 2:1.2.99.2-0ubuntu1 makes session utterly slow

2009-03-30 Thread MrAuer
I noticed this too, updated today, installed from Jaunty Beta amd64.
Gnome is unusably slow on a dualcore - sucks up between 50-90% idling
from login onwards - this happens every time I log in to Gnome. The
problem is only with Gnome - Im now running XFCE and everything works
right and smooth, with cpu idling at a few percentage.

One monitor only, Nvidia driver supplied by Jaunty repos (180.37). Ill
try to look further into this later.

[Bug 337116] Re: [i945] xserver crashes at random on Asus eeepc 901, user returned to login screen

2009-03-12 Thread MrAuer
Okay, here is the kern.log from my latest crash.
I havent had time to do backtrace or install it on this computer yet, Ill see
if I can do that later.
Could this bug at least be marked important? It is rather severe - X can fail
at any arbitrary time, and its happened about a dozen times at least now.
Disrupts workflow nastily :/

I included the time and date (european format) in the filename for easy
finding.

[Bug 337116] Re: xserver crashes at random on Asus eeepc 901, user returned to login screen

2009-03-08 Thread MrAuer
I can confirm this. Similar X crash has happened at least about ten
times on my 901, running Ubuntu-Eee 8.04.1 with Array.org kernel. Does
not matter if I run compiz or not. Usually I get back to login screen
after the crash. A few times it has resulted in a total lockup, with
sound repeating a short stutter as well - sometimes sound keeps playing
normally but the whole machine freezes. Sometimes Ctrl-Alt-Sysctl-and
commands to sync, unmount and boot do work, sometimes I need to hold the
powerbutton to shutdown.

Ive looked at logs and only thing I could find was a message from GDM
about a generic X crash, no other info. I cant get the logs now, I will
post them the day after tomorrow when Im home. At first I suspected
Pulseaudio, but Ive now removed it, and the crashes have since happened
without any audio apps open too. Usually like above - when I click on
something or refresh a page or open a new one in Firefox or Opera.
Doesnt matter if the page has Flash elements or not. Sometimes the crash
happens after several hours, sometimes sooner.

I spent quite a while looking for similar reports and seems that a few
people have experienced this. Id also look into the video driver for
possible causes - I read elsewhere that this same behaviour exists also
with 8.10 and Ubuntu stock kernel, as well as Jaunty alphas. Kernel log
had no entries at the time of the crashes.

I have had a couple similar crashes with Eee 701, same software setup,
as well, but I havent yet looked at the 701s logs.

Ill try to get back to this soon and post any relevant logs. Do ask if
theres anything more I can clarify. This is a pretty annoying issue :/

Thanks and regards.

[Bug 139754] Re: [GUTSY] XMMS is missing the Flac plugin from repositories

2008-04-05 Thread MrAuer
If I remember correctly, make install flac wasnt necessary. I think make - then
copy the flac plugin for xmms from the build directory to xmms plugins dir was
enough.
Ive moved to Audacious since xmms is still missing the plugin and Audacious is
working pretty well for me now.

[Bug 203537] Re: Hardy -- pm-suspend RUINS PARTITION TABLE

2008-04-05 Thread MrAuer
I made a separate bug report of this, since Im running 64 bit Hardy. The
first description here tells almost exactly what happened to me
yesterday. I am running Hardy alpha 5, updated to latest packages
yesterday. I tried suspending, then woke ut up - keyboard and mouse
didnt work, not even ctrl-alt-SysRq, so I was forced to do a hard reset.
After this - GRUB error 17, corrupted ALL my partitions - root, home,
storage.I booted with a live cd, and fsck`ed the partitions - my home
folder is now vanished into tens of numbered files in lost+found, also
lost some stuff from root. Can only log in as root in safe mode now. I
havent yet been able to get to my logs there - may be I will have to
reinstall, worst case scenario. If you have ideas about what logs would
be useful, Ill try to get them. That machine is AMD 5000+ X2, 4 GB ram,
Nvidia chipset on Asus mobo, Nvidia GT 8600 display, running kernel
2.6.24-14-rt, all packages up to date as of yesterday.

[Bug 212171] [NEW] Returning from suspend doesnt work right in Hardy 64 bit, resulting in file system damage

2008-04-05 Thread MrAuer
Public bug reported:

I tried suspending on Hardy 64 bit version, updated to latest packages
yesterday - Installed from Hardy alpha 5. Running kernel 2.6.24-14-rt
(realtime kernel, stock from repos) as of yesterday. Dont know what the
relevant package is.

After trying to return from suspend, the password prompt did come up -
but keyboard or mouse did not work at all. I tried unplugging them and
plugging them back in, no help. Even ctrl-alt-SysRq key combo did not
work - no lights on keyboard or mouse either, like USB power wouldnt be
coming to them.

At this point, I didnt have an SSH server on the comp so I could have
logged in and restarted, but I had to do a hard reset. This caused
missing data on all my drives, including root and home - I got GRUB
error 17 on next boot, had to boot with a live cd and repair root, home
and storage partitions with fsck - after which I can now boot up, but
cannot log in as any other user but root - the file system check moved
all my home folders to lost+found as numbered files. Im still recovering
from this disaster, and cant yet access all the files on that computer.
Id rather not try to recreate this behaviour, for obvious reasons. I
also noticed this seems to be a common problem, from googling around a
little. Perhaps the suspend option should have a big red warning "does
not work on many systems and may cause data corruption"? :)

My machine is AMD 5000+ X2, with AM5 mobo with NVidia chipset. I have
never before tried suspending - not on Gutsy either. 4 GB ram, Nvidia
8600 GT display.

If you have ideas about what logs would be useful, please tell me and
Ill try to get them out of that comp. I hope I dont need to reinstall -
Im not sure about how many data blocks might have been moved to
lost+found on root partition.

[Bug 195854] Re: Firefox or Swiftfox will not start at all

2008-02-27 Thread MrAuer
Weird...Now Firefox will start :)
I dont know if it was some update, didnt see any Firefox related ones..Or maybe
it was that the machine was shut down and booted up today.
Before making that bug report, I tried to launch Firefox several times, thru
terminal, Run app and menu. It gave no output and didnt launch - not even
segfault error etc. But today it works fine :/

This was a brand new install, installed for testing purposes, also new user, so
no old Firefox configs were there either.
Maybe the new Firefox update actually fixed something but didnt take effect
before reboot? Dont know really, but mark this bug as solved/unneeded etc.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I installed Hardy Heron alpha 5, Firefox wouldnt start. It gives no

output.

Today I updated to latest packages, including a Firefox update. It still

minutes ago.

[Bug 157519] Re: Ubunty 7.10 total crash with D-Link DWL-610 when trying to use WEP key

2007-12-24 Thread MrAuer
What worries me a little is that this bug has been reported already in
Feisty at least, and kernel 2.6.20, and nothing has happened. From what
Ive read on the forums, this wireless card worked flawlessly on Dapper,
and has not worked since. Not enough impact to address the bug, or what
is the case? It would seem to be a kernel bug as well, and not Ubuntu
specific...Maybe someone with some clout should bug upstream kernel
devs? :)

[Bug 152100] Re: D-link air dwl-610 system freeze fujitsu siemens Lifebook

2007-12-23 Thread MrAuer
There seems to be a bug in DWL-610 driver...See this report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/157519

May be that blacklisting the driver and using Windows driver with
Ndiswrapper may work, I have not tried this yet. My problems started
when I first typed in the WEP key - after this I got a kernel panic,
also will get a kernel panic when booting up with the card connected now
(I think it stored the wep key and tries to use it and crashes).

[Bug 157519] Re: Ubunty 7.10 total crash with D-Link DWL-610 when trying to use WEP key

2007-12-23 Thread MrAuer
I confirm this as well with Gutsy 7.10 on Thinkpad a21m with D-Link Air
DWL-610 card. The card worked until I entered my WEP password for the
first time causing a kernel panic. Now I get a kernel panic every time I
insert the card or boot up with the card attached.

See also this other older bug report from Feisty, concerning the same
card.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.20/+bug/109399

Seems its the same bug.

Im not at home now and Im quite busy so I cant post the logs - but if
needed, please contact me and Ill get all the information youd like
after Christmas when I get home :)

Thank you for your time and effort ;)

[Bug 109399] Re: DWL-610 network card no longer recognized under Feisty on Thinkpad X30

2007-12-23 Thread MrAuer
DWL-610 also causes problems on Gutsy. It worked until I entered my WEP
password for the first time. Entering the WEP caused a kernel panic, and
now I get a kernel panic every time I insert the card, or if its
inserted when booting. I havent installed ndiswrapper.

Heres couple of links to people on different Ubuntu versions with the same
problem:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4002248#post4002248
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=590258&highlight=dwl+610

>From what ive read on forums, it seems that DWL-610 last worked well on
Dapper or Edgy. On Feisty and Gutsy it causes a kernel panic when trying
to use WEP, with or without ndiswrapper.

If some logs etc are needed, you can ask me by email after Christmas
when I get home.

[Bug 139754] Re: [GUTSY] XMMS is missing the Flac plugin from repositories

2007-10-21 Thread MrAuer
I found another solution (the most obvious one lol)...Compile the XMMS
plugin from source.

You need to first install "xmms-dev" package from Gutsy repos, as well
as the basic "flac" package. Then surf on to Flac homepage at
http://flac.sourceforge.net/ and grab the source tarball (I suppose its
best to have the same version as the installed Flac of Gutsy, I used the
1.2.1 version source).

Extract it, open in terminal, run "./configure" and "make" after that.
Then go to directory "flac-1.2.1/src/plugin_xmms/.libs" and copy the
file "libxmms-flac.so" into XMMS's plugin folder (in your home folder,
.xmms/plugins) and now you should have working FLAC in XMMS.

[Bug 139747] Re: Azureus 2.5.0.4 hangs on Gutsy when adding torrents

2007-10-21 Thread MrAuer
Federico: yes, sounds like the same bug, on my system also it hanged every time
I tried to add a torrent...I had the same Azureus tarball working in Dapper,
Edgy and Feisty and then the problem appeared after installing the Gutsy
alpha..
Havent tested this now after Gutsy final since I moved to using KTorrent and
Transmission because of this Azureus problem.

[Bug 141130] Re: compiz stop working after 17-Sept-2007 updates

2007-09-20 Thread MrAuer
I confirm this bug on Nvidia FX 5200 as well. I had first installed the new
Nvidia driver 100.14.19 and rebooted, everything worked fine. Then I updated to
newest packages, including Compiz, and I get the same error as people above and
compiz wont start - gives the Comparing resolution (1280x1024) to maximum 3D
texture size (512): Failed.
(On any resolution).
It would have to be Compiz related since the version previous to this worked
fine and dandy with the new Nvidia driver.

The fix works on my system also, after "sudo sed -i
's/GL_MAX_3D_TEXTURE_SIZE/GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE/g' /usr/bin/compiz" Compiz
will now start again.

[Bug 139747] Re: Azureus 2.5.0.4 hangs on Gutsy when adding torrents

2007-09-20 Thread MrAuer
Yes, thank you for your response. I know this is an unsupported Azureus
version, but I had the feeling it might be Java related more than
Azureus related, since it has always worked before (have used the same
Azureus version with both Edgy and Feisty and their testing versions).
Also there seems to be Java/Azureus issues even with the repository
version of Azureus 2.5.0.0 in another bug report.

My Java version is "1.6.0_02"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_02-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0_02-b05, mixed mode, sharing)
Installed from Gutsys repositories.

I ran Azureus with the debugger attached to that process (as explained
in Backtrace wiki), and I will include the debugger log as well as
Azureus own log here.

[Bug 139747] Azureus 2.5.0.4 hangs on Gutsy when adding torrents

2007-09-15 Thread MrAuer
Public bug reported:

Ive been running two test systems for Gutsy, both are clean installs
from alpha 4 and not upgrades. Running latest up to date packages as of
today.

Running Azureus 2.5.0.4 from the tarballed binary they distribute, on both my
systems (both Pentium 4 machines).
Azureus will crash every time I try to open torrent files, whether thru the
dialogue box Open torrent... or by drag-and-dropping files on Azureus.
Otherwise Azureus works, it seeds or downloads torrents that were already open.
I think this behaviour started sometime after Gutsy alpha 4, but cannot confirm
the exact time. Used to work well on both machines.

Bug is reproducable and happens every time on performing file adds. Have
tried removing Azureus folders, both the .azureus and actual azureus
ones, for trying a clean Azureus setup - no help.

I can post the Azureus logs if needed, I dont see anything weird there but then
im not a programmer :)
I thought Id file this as a separate bug, since this differs imho from the
other filed Azureus/Java bugs.

[Bug 82335] Re: network-manager should not set offline mode when it manages no device

2007-04-08 Thread MrAuer
Bug is still there for me, tested on two machines with latest Feisty
yesterday, fresh Beta install and then updated to latest packages. Both
machines have 2 ethernet cards, other one is static LAN and other DHCP
internet. On both machines, when booting up the DHCP connection is down,
and when using Network manager to change configuration, always just one
interface at a time works. Either LAN or DHCP, if you enable both at the
same time, both interfaces lose their ip and connectivity. Network
manager is certainly doing something odd there.

[Bug 75237] Re: fails to connect in feisty, only one interface at a time works, other gets dropped

2007-03-14 Thread MrAuer

I also have broken network manager with only wired networks in use. I
have two generic Ethernet cards that have always worked before, and
which are guaranteed Linux-supported by manufacturers (from Hoary till
Dapper have always worked).

I installed Herd 5 yesterday and updated to latest packages. At first
both network interfaces worked: Other one is assigned static IP for LAN
(eth1), other is assigned IP by DHCP (eth0).

A little while later I noticed that either one of the interfaces gets
dropped, defaults to no IP assigned. If i go to network manager and
reconfigure them, other one starts to work. Say I reconfigure eth0 with
dhcp, it gets the IP and starts working, but AT THE SAME MOMENT, the
other interface loses its IP. Happens every time, I can have only one
interface active and with an IP.

Repeated this process several times, always just one interface working
at a time. I dont think this can be a hardware issue, since both
interfaces DO work, just not at the same time. Tried rebooting also,
doesnt affect it. Both interfaces work perfectly normally when theyre
up, just not at the same time.

[Bug 49819] Re: NFS and SMB transfers across LAN work very slowly

2006-07-07 Thread MrAuer
Now I also installed SSH server on both boxes, and tried moving files
with both scp and the Nautilus interface. SSH transfers on LAN work at
the same slow speed as SMB and NFS, so only HTTP protocol seems to
utilize full ethernet speed. Im at a loss to explain what might cause
it. Ive also disabled IPv6, no effect. Next im thinking of trying some
other distribution on the other box to see if the problem persists when

Today I reinstalled and reconfigured all Samba components (samba-common,

identically)

[Bug 49819] NFS and SMB transfers across LAN work very slowly

2006-06-15 Thread MrAuer
Public bug reported:

In Dapper final release, both SMB and NFS mounts accessed across LAN
(100mbit ethernet) transfer data at about 1/10 rate of what it should
be. Meaning a transfer rate of 300-700 kilos/sec, when it normally is
closer to 10 megabytes.

The problem is there with both Samba and NFS, first noticed it with
Samba. This problem shows up in 3 different machines, 2 desktops, 1 old
Thinkpad. All of these machines worked correctly when running under
Hoary, but 2 of them also had this problem with SMB/Breezy packages.
Also, the problem persists in file transfers between Win/Apple systems,
which also worked fine previously. All 3 boxes are clean Dapper LTS
installs. Verified that the hardware works: Transfers across LAN using
HTTP protocol work at near the 100 mbps limit, around 9 megs/sec.
