[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2011-03-30 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
The real problem here is people who pretend that the greatest thing a
linux distribution can do is immediately embrace new technologies that
are not yet fully supported by vendor drivers, yet continue to harass
users to install vendor drivers right after installing their OS. When
you go even deeper, the real problem is that Ubuntu wants to be at the
forefront of technology, but at the same time has a solid following from
people who expect it to be stable and presentable as a demonstration of
the advantages of Linux above other operating systems. Ubuntu
developers can't keep trying to walk along both of these tightropes;
they have to decide eventually.

Personally I am happy to see Ubuntu keep pushing into new technologies.
In the meantime they can't keep simultaneously pushing themselves as a
leader in new things like wayland (which I couldn't be more excited
about) yet still present themselves as a stable, professional system.
They need to branch out into a hardcore linux guru version and a
window convert version if they want to keep pursuing these two
completely different career paths.

And gslack, you might want to try reading posts before replying to them.
I've tried and condoned many solutions to the splash screen problem.
I've just taken these posts beyond this simple problem and applied them
to the project as a whole.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2011-03-27 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
gslack,

You sure went all out on that rant. But the fact of the matter is,
every one of us here knows more than enough about how hardware vendors
don't fully support linux. After ten years I'm getting tired of hearing
excuses about Microsoft whispering sweet nothings into ATI and nvidia's
ears as they conspire to make it impossible for linux to beg for a
working X-based desktop. That time is past and I've found that their
drivers work quite well in X these days, with ONE exception. That would
be KMS.

Ubuntu used to have a splash screen that worked quite well with every
hardware platform I ever tried it on (several.) But now that has
changed despite hundreds of people protesting, some in this thread.

And I might add, engage capslock mode THIS WAS DONE KNOWING THAT
KERNEL MODE SETTING DOES NOT WORK WITH VENDOR DRIVERS /capslock so I
don't want to hear that AGAIN/

I'm sorry to engage capslock but I don't know how this could possibly be
stated with any more clarity.

Now, I don't want to hear anything about us being ungrateful, or
unknowledgable, or unwilling to put the effort into linux ourselves. We
have presented our solutions, our workarounds, and our deep considerate
thought into this and many similar issues and we're always faced with a
wall of excuses about vendor support and technological superiority with
a few (assumed small) sacrifices.

We need a new category of bug named shameful

2011-03-27 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
And I don't want to hear any more excuses about vendors not being as
fully into the Linux game as we wish they were. They devote as much
time and resources as they can and as their market allows. They
actually are putting effort into their drivers, but KMS was sprung on
them at the last second. And before that second could expire, ubuntu
decided to fully embrace a system that only worked with KMS drivers.
You don't think that might have at least irked them a little?

I don't need to explain that I love Linux and all the philosophy behind
it, as my passion in posting here should fully expose that. But I would
have to be an ignorant fool to believe that Linux developers don't make
mistakes. And here, the mistake was made within the Linux community.
The only way to fix it is to root out people who make the same tired
excuses we've been hearing for years.

I know this particular bug is only about splash screen appearance, but
this problem plagues this project in several other areas and needs to be
solved.

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2011-03-26 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
The issue here is not necessarily that the display method used by
plymouth is incompatible with proprietary drivers. I would say the
issue is that the developers made an unnecessary switch to this display
method knowing full well that the proprietary drivers didn't support it
yet.

I'm with everybody else who says that although this problem obviously
doesn't break anything, it certainly doesn't make ubuntu look like a
professional, polished product. Seriously though, even Microsoft has
this part of their OS right, and they can't even figure out how to make
an application menu that's not riddled with bugs.

I love showing off linux to all my friends, but quite frankly if I catch
them looking over my shoulder as ubuntu is booting up, I feel
embarrassed.

[Bug 677420] [NEW] Removing LXDM does not change default display manager

2010-11-19 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lxdm

After uninstalling LXDM, the default display manager is still set to
/usr/sbin/lxdm in the file /etc/X11/default-display-manager.

This results in the system hanging on boot after checking battery
state unless you boot into safe graphics mode (or fix it to
/usr/sbin/gdm or whatever display manager you use.)

[Bug 563878] Re: Ubuntu splashscreen big and ugly after installing ATI/nVidia proprietary graphics driver

2010-11-16 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
The fix posted by Mauricio Parra Casado worked on my ATI laptop
(Maverick.) Unfortunately my screen's native resolution wasn't
available, but at 1024x768, it's still a lot better than before.

I'd like to say to anybody that brushes this problem aside as
unimportant because the boot splash is only seen shortly, that this is
about QUALITY. If a car maker were to build a car that could run
forever, but sputters and runs rough for 15 seconds after being started
every time from the factory, nobody would call it a quality auto. The
same is true for a linux distribution.

[Bug 40872] Re: Desktop icons are allowed to overlap

2010-11-02 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
I almost erased my 750gb external hard drive because of this bug. There
were some pictures on my desktop that I wanted to delete, so I drew a
box around them and dragged them to the trash can. Turns out the
mounted partition's icon was hiding under them.

Had I been a lesser computer guy, I most likely would not have realized
what was going on when the trash can said that what I wanted to erase
was too big for the trash can, and could only be deleted. I would have
clicked ok then wondered why it was taking so long. I also probably
would not have had my data backed up.

[Bug 585577] [NEW] KDE Dependencies are out of control

2010-05-25 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
Public bug reported:

When installing almost any KDE application in a stock ubuntu install, I
end up having to install a ridiculous amount of additional packages as
dependencies. For example, installing kpat calls for kpackagekit,
mysql-client and server-core, update-manager-kde, and many other
applications and libraries that should have absolutely nothing to do
with kpat.

I fully expect to have to install the base kde and Qt libraries as
dependencies, but is kpat really designed in a way that it actually
requires akonadi and mysql??

This is not a specific report against kpat, I'm just using it as an
example. This seems to be a problem with almost all kde apps these
days.

[Bug 542208] Re: Please blacklist i830 from Kernel mode-setting

2010-05-10 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
I am having problems with the 830m chipset in my dell 2600, using the
release version of lucid. adding i915.modeset=0 does not solve
anything, nor does nomodeset. (using both doesn't work either.)
Plymouth is flickering like crazy and kind of looks like an old TV set
with a loose connection, and when it gets to the desktop it looks like
just a small part of it is visible but stretched out, and there are
several horizontal lines through it. The colors are way off as well.

As described above is what happens with the live CD. I tried installing
with wubi, and that won't even load GDM without spitting out errors all
over the place. I'll try a few things like updating firmware and I'll
try to pull some logs out of this mess.

[Bug 565183] [NEW] Session menu missing from login screen

2010-04-16 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Version: 2.30.0-0ubuntu5, (lucid) but has been affecting me since karmic

The login screen does not show the drop-down menu to select a session
until the user name is entered. If one wants to use password-less
logins, it's quite difficult to choose a session. One workaround is to
enter a username that doesn't exist or requires a password, then choose
the session, hit cancel, and login with the username you want. However
last time I tried this it only worked to switch from gnome to KDE, and
not vice-versa.

[Bug 422215] [NEW] Many gnome applets do not start when the date is set too early

2009-08-31 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If the system clock is set to too early a date, there are many gnome-
panel applets that will not start. Some of them are the clock applet,
the notification area, and the user switcher.

I'm not sure what the threshold date is, but my ibook g4 has a bad logic
board and resets the date to Jan. 1st 1904 on every boot. If I start
the computer without an internet connection, I get a lot of error
messages when gnome loads. If internet is available, then the time gets

[Bug 360238] [NEW] nautilus-connect-server should not give samba option if samba is not installed

2009-04-12 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
Public bug reported:

Release: 8.04 Hardy
Version: nautilus 1:2.22.5.1-ubuntu1

When you bring up the nautilus-connect-server dialog, it supplies the option to
connect to a Windows Share, regardless of whether samba is installed.
If samba is not installed, when trying to connect it will give an error dialog
that says:

Can't display location
smb://ip.ip.ip.ip/
No application is registered as handling this file

I am filing this as a bug because this is not the behavior one would
expect. If samba is not installed, it should not give the option to

them, or automatically install the needed services, like the folder
sharing dialog does.

[Bug 360238] Re: nautilus-connect-server should not give samba option if samba is not installed

2009-04-12 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
Correction:

By samba I mean smbclient, which I do have installed.

That being said, there's still a bug somewhere causing nautilus to
display that error dialog, because the smb:// protocol handler for
nautilus is installed on the machine.

Typing smb://my.ip.add.ress/ in nautilus does work to access the windows
shares. So maybe there's just a syntax error in the path line generated
by nautilus-connect-server.

Closing this bug. Apologies.

[Bug 321332] [NEW] crash when playing AVC .mp4 files

2009-01-25 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libavcodec-unstripped-52

When opening a .mp4 file containing video encoded in the H.264/AVC
Codec, Totem will crash.

This is also evident when Nautilus attempts to use Totem to thumbnail
these files. They don't get thumbnailed, and if apport is running it
will ask if you want to report the problem.

To fix it, I uninstalled libavcodec-unstripped-52 and installed
libavcodec52.

[Bug 320871] Re: should use labels rather than UUIDs if they exist

2009-01-25 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
I agree. This has caused too many breakages for me in previous versions
of ubuntu when changing partitioning, to the point where it wouldn't
boot unless I went in and changed fstab.

[Bug 321336] [NEW] gnome volume control is missing switches

2009-01-25 Thread Nathaniel Wilson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-media

Jaunty seems to have a new version of gnome-volume-control, which has a
new GUI. The new GUI has no way of accessing, or enabling access to
whatever various switches your sound card has. I had to install gnome-
alsamixer so I could change a switch and get my sound working in jaunty.
(The switch should be disabled by default for this sound card, this
seems to be new with jaunty.)
