[Bug 1288747] Re: [334] Parts of the UI randomly flicker when moving the mouse

2014-06-20 Thread Neil Rodgers
Christopher,
I updated compiz with your newest packages and just experienced another system
freeze. I'm running Trusty with Nvidia 337.25 on a laptop with a GT 425M. If
there is any additonal info I could provide you with let me know and I will
post back with it.
Thanks for your continued work on this!

[Bug 1288747] Re: [334] Parts of the UI randomly flicker when moving the mouse

2014-04-09 Thread Neil Rodgers
I've found that enabling force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on
repaint in the workaround plugin in CCSM eliminates the issue for me.
Works on 14.04 with 337.12 and older 334 drivers. Despite the tooltip
saying that it will cause a massive increase in cpu and gpu usage, there
is no noticable increase on my system.

[Bug 1288747] Re: [334] Parts of the UI randomly flicker when moving the mouse

2014-03-11 Thread Neil Rodgers
I'm adding myself as affected, bug #269904 sounds similar to what I'm
seeing but I've never experienced any problems till 334.16 and 334.21. I
notice it the most with Firefox but thats probably because 90% of the
time thats whats I'm using. Pages don't redraw completely and the boxes
around the bookmark toolbar buttons seems to stick as I mouse over
them. Downgrading the driver to any previous version solves the issue.
I'm using Unity with Ubuntu 13.10

[Bug 1162954] Re: Nvdia blank black windows

2013-07-06 Thread Neil Rodgers
Noticed that for me just disabling the focus effect in the animations
plugin gets rid of this bug for me. All other animations can still be
enabled and the bug goes away. Before that I was using emerald wich
also stopped this bug from happening. Nvidia 325.08 here, and 13.04 with
Unity.

[Bug 729979] Re: [nvidia] Windows appear blank white

2012-07-29 Thread Neil Rodgers
I noticed that while using the emerald window decorator this bug goes
away completely for me. All animations, dodge effect minimizing etc.
working and no white windows. As soon as I issue a the command $gtk-
window-decorator --replace the white windows return instantly upon
selecting another window. Something going on in the decorator maybe?

[Bug 873541] Re: misaligned close, minimize and maximize

2012-04-17 Thread Neil Rodgers
I just had to say that I agree the current design looks a bit strange. However
one thing I do like is being able to throw the mouse up in the corner to hit
the close button on maximized apps. If that was changed I think you'd hear
about it from alot of users. I still think the design in Natty was the best
looking though, with the BFB on the panel and the window buttons always visible
but at the cost of this functionality. Ultimately though I'd like to see window
buttons and frames eliminated completely and all tasks related to windows done
via window previews or popups that are revealed by hovering the mouse over
the icon in the launcher similar to dockbarx. Call me crazy but it just might
work.

As far as the dash goes I'm always asking myself why it has window buttons to
begin with? The Dash is not really a window but an overlay anyway, you cant
drag it around, it is fused to the panel and launcher, it doesn't have an
unfocused state because its always on top, it doesn't have any global menu
entries or even a title in the panel. So basically its the farthest thing away
from a window in the whole system and yet it has window buttons and one of them
doesn't even do anything! What was wrong with the little resize icon that used
to be in the corner? It worked perfect and looked nice.

David- To answer your question about the update being added to the
normal flow of updates in Precise, thats what they are trying to do. SRU
stands for stable release update and they are hoping to push it in
there.

Łukasz- Thanks so much for your work, I disabled your ppa due to the
crashes but it was so awesome to finally see the titlebars come back to

as possible, but what are the chances of the fix actually landing in
Precise? We are awfully close to release. Would it be available via ppa
instead? Thanks again!

I too am experiencing the freezing of the UI occasionaly when certain
windows open. The first time it happened was on a nautilus properties
dialogue window. It seems it isn't limited to popup windows though as
I've gotten the hang while opening programs too. I've only had to kill X
once, the other times I just waited a bit and it resolved itself.

Did you completely remove your existing fglrx driver before installing the .deb
from xorg-edgers? You can also try installing the drivers directly from AMD's

2012-03-11 Thread Neil Rodgers
Yes, I have always read that you should purge the driver first before
installing a newer version. You can easily remove fglrx with this command-
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*
After you run this install the new driver then reboot and hopefully you'll boot
into lightdm again. If you need any help let me know and I'll try to help.

[Bug 921384] Re: [MASTER] Xorg crashes when trying to play a video with XV under xserver 1.11 - xs111LookupPrivate

2012-03-07 Thread Neil Rodgers
Sure, look here
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Oneiric_Installation_Guide. Then follow
the instructions for removing catalyst/fglrx, its about halfway down the page.
After that, goto the top of the page to the section called Installing Catalyst
Manually (from AMD/ATI's site) and follow the directions there. Make sure
that in the command to create the .deb packages you change Ubuntu/oneiric to
Ubuntu/precise.
 So the key steps are
1.)completely remove existing catalyst/fglrx
2.)download and compile new driver
3.)install the new driver
4.)reboot

I dont think its in any Ubuntu package but you can get it here.

The script lets you skip through the plugins and install only the ones you

Daniel,
Thank you for your excellent work! Im using your ppa in Ocelot and I cant
believe how buttery smooth my windows are moving now! The last time I remeber
seeing them so smooth was on my Maverick install. Using fglrx with HD4200.
This is kind of a noobish question but the fixes are improving the performance
of compiz in general right? Not just when moving windows? Because after
upgrading with your ppa it seems some of my games are running better and I
didn't know if its just a placebo affect or they really are. Thanks.
