[Bug 1709708] [NEW] Intel Broxton HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] Pulseaudio detects output but produces no sound on NUC6CAYH

2017-08-09 Thread Neilen Marais
Public bug reported:

Upon bootup, the HDMI output connected to a Samsung TV shows up as an
output. If this output is selected and a sound test run (either using
the GUI or using aplay /user/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav) no
sound is heard. Pavumeter does however show sound coming through.

I found that sound can be fixed by allowing the display to sleep, waking
it up, and then restarting pulseaudio (pulseaudio -k). After that sound
output through HDMI to the TV will work until rebooted.

The fix can be succesfully scripted as follows:

xset dpms force off
sleep 1
pulseaudio -k

The machine is an Intel NUC6CAYH, connected to a not particularly new
Samsung 42" TV using an HDMI cable, running a fresh install of Ubuntu
16.04.

In earlier attempts at fixing the issue I set pulseaudio to never let
the sound device sleep (commented out load-module module-suspend-on-idle
in /etc/pulse/default.pa), and also set the default sampling rate to
48000 (default-sample-rate = 48000 in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf). Not sure
if these settings contributed to the fix, but they are not sufficient on
their own.

[Bug 1081348] [NEW] Wifi cannot be reneabled after disabling 'wireless networking' in network manager

2012-11-20 Thread Neilen Marais
Public bug reported:

Output of lsb_release -rd:
Description:Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
Release:12.04

On a Sony Vaio YB4A Notebook, once 'wireless networking' is unchecked
in the networking panel app, it cannot be enabled using the panel app
again. Manually issuing 'rfkill unblock wifi' does seem to reactivate
the wifi.

The symptoms vary. Sometimes the panel app will claim that the wifi is
disabled by the kill switch. Other times it will pretend to renable
wifi, but it won't connect to anything until the rfkill command is
issued.

[Bug 599846] Re: firefox right click open containing folder should highlight file

This issue is particularly problematic when you have a lot of files in
your download directory. Given that firefox downloads to $HOME/Downloads
by default, I suspect that goes for most people.

[Bug 736970] [NEW] Evince generates large print jobs that never complete

2011-03-17 Thread Neilen Marais
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

If I print a document (such as the one attached below), evince generates
large print jobs (~3MB for the 9 page doc attached) that takes forever
to print. While wating, a ghostscript process (gs) takes 100% cpu. This
process does not complete within a reasonable time (I cancelled the job
after waiting 20 minutes).

prints almost instantly.

[Bug 720248] [NEW] emacs23 doesn't save toolbar visibility when choosing Save Options from Options menu

2011-02-16 Thread Neilen Marais
Public bug reported:

It seems that some settings are not saved when using the Options menu.
For example, if I change the visibility of column numbers, the setting

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2011-02-14 Thread Neilen Marais
In reply to #245 by The Fiddler:

I'm not sure if our experience differs or if I did not explain my
proposed solution well enough. I find that I have no difficulty getting
the resize pointer to appear momentarily while moving across the window
border, the problem lies in actually clicking while the resize pointer
is active. The proposed solution would fix that, since the resize
pointer will remain active for several pixels once activated.

In any case, so long as a working solution if shipped in Natty I guess
I'm satsified!

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult [please no more comments; patches welcome]

2011-01-24 Thread Neilen Marais
I think a good modification to the invisible drag handle proposal
would be to rather use resize border resistance. This is a solution
that won't require more than 1 px of UI space to work well. How I
envisage it working is:

1) keep your arbitrarily small window border resize
2) Define a resize-resistance size, say 5 px
3) Once the user moves the pointer over the resize edge, the resize cursor will
appear
4) The resize cursor will remain active until the user moves the pointer at
lease 'resize-resistance' many pixels away from the resize edge
5) Click-and-hold while the resize cursor is active will result in window
resizing.

This seems to me like it should have 100% backward compatibility,
require only changes to the window manager, will be theme independent
and will still be easy to use.

[Bug 432353] Re: ath5k: phy0: failed to wakeup the MAC Chip

2011-01-18 Thread Neilen Marais
Most recent comment (#18) on upstream bug
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15382 seems to indicate that
the kernel option:

CONFIG_PCIEASPM=y

solved the problem for one user at least. Checking on my 10.04 system:

brick@sneeupenaar:~$ cat /boot/config-2.6.32-27-generic | grep -i aspm
# CONFIG_PCIEASPM is not set

indeed indicates that the option is not set.

My little Aspire one hardly has space left on its 8GB SSD to do a kernel
compile, but if someone could package up such a kernel I'd be more than
willing to test on my machine!

[Bug 8764] Re: Disk doesn't show free space in 'filesystem'

2008-05-08 Thread Neilen Marais
On second thought... Filesystem is kind of a meta-concept that just
happens to include the root parition. What would probably make sense is
to summarise all the mounted filesystem's info somehow. This is actually
a surprisingly complicated issue to present completely logically in an
UI ;)

Perhaps it needs a new usability bug?

2008-01-06 Thread Neilen Marais
Hi,

I've been trying with the packages from

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tormodvolden/ubuntu gutsy main

Still get the crash. I also tried enabling DRM logging, i.e.

echo 1 | sudo tee /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug

but my hard drive filled up before a crash happened. It did seem to get
progressively slower the longer the screensaver ran.

[Bug 3198] Re: [radeon, savage] Starwars screensaver locks X

2007-11-18 Thread Neilen Marais
Well well, I have good news and bad news.

Good news: The demise of starwars in gutsy was greatly exagerated; It's still
in xscreensaver-gl-extra where it's always been
http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?searchmode=filelistword=xscreensaver-gl-extraversion=gutsyarch=i386

Bad news: Still crashes as hard as ever ;(((

I'm getting really frusrated for several reasons:

1) I like the starwars screensaver
2) the hard crashes undermine my confidence in general
3) It's been more than 2 years since I first reported the bug with no apparent
progress
4) I don't know how to contribute to finding the problem in a more meaningful
way.

Anyway, given the hard-crash nature it seems clear cut to me that it is
a problem in DRI or Xorg that is just brought to light by the starwars
screensaver. Presumably not only ubuntu users should be seeing it unless
it's some long standing ubuntu divergence from upstream that is causing
the issue; that seems unlikely though. I.O.W. should we not be taking
this upstream? By the way, specific suggestions regarding 4) would be
appreciated!

[Bug 153301] weather applet won't use automatic-proxy-configuration

2007-10-16 Thread Neilen Marais
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-applets

In gnome-network-preferences the proxy can be confgured as Direct
internet connection (i.e. None), Manual proxy configuration where the
host/port of the proxy server is specified and Automatic proxy
configuration where an URL pointing to a .pac proxy configuration is
specified.

If Automatic proxy configuration is specified gweather-applet-2
ignores that setting and uses the information provided in Manual proxy
configuration, even if it is disabled. To see this,

1) Change the manual proxy setting to point to an invalid proxy server
and restart gweather-applet-2.

Now the weather won't update

2) Activate a valid proxy configuration in Automatic proxy
configuration and restart gweather-applet-2.

The weather still won't update

3) Change the Manual configuration to point to a valid proxy server but
do not activate it. Keep using the Automatic configuration and restart
gweather-applet-2.

Now the weather will update using the deactivated Manual proxy
configuration rather than the activated automatic proxy.

Note the restart of gweather-applet-2 at each step is required because
of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-applets/+bug/49736

This is running up to date Feisty/AMD64

[Bug 107025] Re: Multipage printing issue using even and odd.

2007-06-19 Thread Neilen Marais
I see this bug is still marked as need info. Peter Russel seems to
describe the issue clearly, and I also just ran into the same issue
trying to print a long document using pages per sheet = 2. I want to
print on both sides of the paper using a printer that doesn't support
duplex printing.

Using the definitions as:

Page: logical page as defined in the document
Sheet: physical piece of paper as loaded in the printer

If I have an 8 page document that I want to print using 2 sheets, I
want:

Pages per sheet: 2

Then selecting

+ Pages per sheet: 2
+ Only print: Odd sheets

I expect page 1 page 2 to be printed on sheet 1, page 5 6 to be
printed on sheet2. Now I turn the sheets upside down and reload them in
the printer, and select:

+ Pages per sheet: 2
+ Only print: Even sheets

I expect page 34 on sheet 1 and page 78 on sheet 2.

Is there anything else that can be clarified?

Please, I don't want rumours that Ubuntu users needlessly kill trees
because of deficient two-sided printing support to start spreading ;-)

Regards
Neilen

[Bug 119078] Excessive memory use with large images

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

Memory use as reported by top:

several times, almost always when trying to show off ubuntu to
interested parties. I don't even use windows, yet I expect free space to
be shown here ;) And I keep getting embarrassed over and over; I forget
every time since in daily life I'm a command-line junky.

[Bug 109566] Re: firefox crashed

2007-05-12 Thread Neilen Marais
Hi,

My firefox has stopped crashing on that site. The only significant
change that I've made had been to remove a very old flash plugin that
was in my ~/.mozilla which meant that ff was using flash 7 and not the
newer flash 9. I was unaware of this old flash plugin lying around, I
wonder how it ever got there ;P What confuses me though is that before
it still crashed when using -safemode? Surely it should have disabled
the flash plugin in that case?

Anyway, I think this means we can close this bug.

[Bug 109566] Re: firefox crashed

2007-04-24 Thread Neilen Marais
Hi.

I tried by starting firefox in a fresh session, ie.

firefox -ProfileManager

in a terminal and created a new profile. The url still causes firefox to
hang. I'm not sure how to get a crash report, since firefox doesn't
actually crash, rather it becomes unresponsive and takes 100% CPU.
Killing the process does not result in anything appearing in /var/crash.

Does this URL not cause similar behaviour for anyone else? It could be
the flash plugin causing trouble; is it possible to temporarily disable
it without uninstalling?

[Bug 104893] gthumb unresponsive / unusably slow with RAW files in feisty

2007-04-09 Thread Neilen Marais
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

The Feisty version of gthumb seems to support raw files, but when I open
a directory that contains a mix of .JPG and .NEF (Nikon RAW) files (my
camera is set to record both raw and JPG versions of each picture),
gthumb becomes unusably slow.

I can disable the display of NEF files using a filter, but this has two
problems:

A) If NEF files are present the filter UI is unresponsive
B) the space used by the filter UI prevents met from sizing the thumbnail view
as I'd like it.

It may be a bug, but when I turn off display of the file filter it also
stops working.

I'm running Feisty i386 on an old but not unreasonably slow PC (1GB
memory, AMD AthlonXP @ 1.8GHz).

[Bug 3198] Re: [ati radeon] Starwars screensaver locks X

2006-11-23 Thread Neilen Marais
Hi

I did some more testing. I ran the xscreensaver package from Hoary on my
Edgy system with no crash. Hoary shipped xscreensaver v4.16. Breezy (the
version where crashes started happening) ships xscreensaver v4.21. If
you look at the xscreensaver changelog entry for v4.20
http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/changelog.html you will see:

* starwars uses texture-mapped fonts now.

It seems likely that this is what is causing the problem. What is strange is
that no other GL screensavers cause a crash though.
I would like to try and run a v4.20 or newer xscreensaver on a Hoary system to
see if the xscreensaver update merely exposed a latent Xorg bug or if the Xorg
crashing is also a newer bug.

BTW, I see this bug is marked as need info. Is there any more info I can
provide? I'm willing to run debug-testing code or whatever it takes on
my machine to get to the bottom of this.
