[Bug 191889] Re: [MASTER] [WORKAROUND] "Offline Mode" feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager.

2012-06-04 Thread Neill_R
Unmanaged Device found; state CONNECTED forced.

I am running Ubuntu server 12.04 LTS with ubuntu-desktop installed. The
eth0 device is not managed by NM. I use NM to connect my 3g Mobile
Broardband USB modem to the internet. I also use firestarter to
provision (Internet Connection Sharing). As of this moment I see no
problems. Either when I use my 3G modem or I plug the eth0 into a router
to gain Internet access.

[Bug 912473] [NEW] login does not offer keyboard selection

2012-01-05 Thread Neill_R
Public bug reported:

ubuntu 11.04 desktop 32b

I am using likewise to join a domain therefore I click others and and
enter domain\user and then the password. Usually i would click on the
local user and then enter the password. As i enter the password there is
at the bottom of the screen chance to change the keyboard.

well i have things set up so that I can't enter a \ from the keyboard
and have to use the on screen keyboard and click on the \ button.

if the selection of others brought up this keyboard selection then I
could choose my keyboard and all would be well.

Since you already do it for passwords surely it is a mistake (oversight)
not to do it for user names too.

Is there a way to take screen shots during log-in or is a digital camera
the only way?

NetworkManager: what version of network manager am I using they have
removed the ABOUT menu option from the applet also there is no signal
strength hover text. Please don't just remove things this is important
to people who use mobile broadband internet ( may be relevant to
wireless broad band too (Btopenzone)

[Bug 886848] Problems with installing from Alternate CD

2011-11-10 Thread Neill_R
Hi Fabio

I have a PACKARD BELL I-Media 1328/1 PC 2GB RAM & 500GB HD

and a CD/DVD

/dev/sr0:

ATAPI CD-ROM, with removable media
 Model Number: _NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A
 Serial Number:
 Firmware Revision: 1.52
Standards:
 Likely used CD-ROM ATAPI-1
Configuration:
 DRQ response: 3ms.
 Packet size: 12 bytes
 cache/buffer size = unknown
Capabilities:
 LBA, IORDY(cannot be disabled)
 DMA: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 *udma2
  Cycle time: min=120ns recommended=120ns
 PIO: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
Cycle time: no flow control=120ns IORDY flow control=120ns

It appears this should be capable 48x however testing the 10.4.3
alternate i386 installation CD with DVdisaster on this machine shows
that at 48X and at he outer rim of the disk (verbatim CD-R 700MB
53Xspeed (vitesse)) the scan graph on this disk looks like there is an
earthquake happening. However the CD can it says be read successfully.
(I WONDER why can't the installer read the CD THEN)

At this point in time I do not know whether this is the root cause of
the problem but it sure looks like it. I wrote and installed this CD on
my HP laptop but that was a lower speed DVD/CD ROM device.

I do not know how to control the speed of the CDROM drive when booting
from the installation disk.

I have just watch a DVD movie on it and that plays fairly well.
DVdisaster showed no errors and had a pretty smooth and straight graph
from 3.7x to 8x 0-4.n GB.

Can you help?

I the mean time I will try an external (USB) CDROM drive (no I don't
think I can boot from that) therefore I will try another internal
drive. If I can find my CD cleaner I will use that too.

2011-11-09 Thread Neill_R
Fabio

Based on your assumption I will investigate here by downloading the ISO
file again, burning slowly to a CD.

I will test the memory of the PC and try again to Install this OS in a
side by side fashion.

Installation on dev/sda 15 16 and 17 (/ /home and swap) but i will
also try on just 15 and 17 ? and swap. Should I try just using 14 as
swap for both OS systems.

After that I am at a loss as to what I could try.

How is my DVD drive capable of writing a CD which is capable of
successfully running the on-board test-CD for correctness, yet when
installing the system asks for the same CD already installed to be
placed in the drive. This also accured on the 11.04 alternative CD.

How can i find out what is happening?
I have checked the two partitions 15 and 16 they are okay.
I was advised to only install on primary partitions but as you can see I
am running on logical partitions SDA9 as / 14 as swap.

[Bug 349237] Re: OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorApplet error

2010-02-21 Thread Neill_R

I also just got this error on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. I'm not aware of
having changed anything When starting the computer today the message
was there out of the blue.

When I ran /usr/lib/indicator-applet/indicator-applet nothing seemed to
happen. No error messages either. indicator-applet is installed
(according to synaptic), I run a fresh install (no upgrade) and use the
(default) human theme.
