[Bug 490201] Re: [lucid] Nautilus asks password when accessing workgroup

Major issue for me as I cannot open shares on my other Ubuntu machines

How do you stop Nautilus asking for a password or is there some 'magic'
default for this non-existent password?

Many thanks
Nick

[Bug 423767] Re: please enable rt2800usb and disable rt3070sta in the imx51 kernel

2009-10-04 Thread Nicholas Roberts
Apologies for this interruption, but I have been trying to get a
'convert's' laptop working on Ubuntu for 3 weeks now. Everything is fine
apart from WiFi. He had two cards (one USB and one PCMCIA), I won't bore
you with the detail but they do not work with Linux.

To keep him interested (and myself sane) I bought a USB stick with a
148f:2070 chipset. rt2800usb loads but neither Network Manager no WiCd
can connect it. I have tried it with Jaunty and Karmic... Jaunty ignores
it, Karmic loads rt2800usb and neither work.

Seeing as WiFi is so important to connectivity, it is sad that
Linux/Ubuntu is soo very complicated/impossible on that issue.
Needless to say that Windoze$$$ XP worked with all three within 3
minutes of plugging the card/dongle in.

If ANYBODY can tell me how to get a 148f:2070 chipset connected with
ANYTHING other than Window$ I will donate my body to them on my death...
creepy eh?

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2009-08-30 Thread Nicholas Roberts
I thought everything had been resolved for me having updated to
2.6.31-8. However... if I delete a couple of files using Nautilus and
then go for a system shutdown I get the warning message that Nautilus is
still deleting files (even though it actually finished). Same goes for
copying files... a shutdown will report Nautilus is still busy copying.
Forcing a shutdown leads to the same 'superblock inconsistency' issue on
reboot and the need for an fsck.

The superblock issue is that it has found a timestamp one hour (exactly)
in the future... strange one this. Anyway, none of this happened prior
to this bug so I am concluding that there is...

(a) either an outstanding issue directly related to this bug or

(b) that the original bug caused an inconsistency in my filesystem
and/or configuration causing the Nautilus errors and superblock
inconsistencies.

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2009-08-30 Thread Nicholas Roberts
Hi Bernhard

I have just been reading a related issue being discussed on the forums,
see: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1252690

The bug could be unrelated and just coincidental to the 'hanging'
problem that has now been addressed. However, as you are experiencing
the same issues as me, please could you try running
System--Administration--Time Date. My settings for timezone are
corrupted and cannot be reset, although looking at/setting them from the
command line appears fine.

Please let me know if you are also experiencing the timezone corruption
issue.

Many thanks
Nick

My apologies... I was typing my response and did not see mac_v's message

Bernhard - I would still appreciate your letting me know about the
timezone issue. If your system is ok then I can assume I have a separate
issue with timezone corruption, but if you get the same thing then maybe
this is all related to the fix that mac_v mentions for the Nautilus bug.

Thanks again,

[Bug 406211] Re: time-admin crashed with SIGSEGV in strcmp()

2009-08-30 Thread Nicholas Roberts
I stumbled across this bug report thanks to the automated bug generation
when my time-admin crashed with the same symptoms noted here. I was
wondering if the problem with timezone setting is contributing the this
bug where an fsck is being forced due to an inconsistency in the
superblocks (superblock identified an hour in the future)...

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31rc7

2009-08-27 Thread Nicholas Roberts
As #16 says I receive a prompt to run fsck reporting that there was an
unexpected inconsistency as the last superblock write was (exactly) one
hour in the future. Not sure if it is relevant but I wondered if there
was an inconsistency between how Karmic was tracking time and I ran
System--Administration--Time and Date (i.e. time-admin) to find that
the time zone etc. is all corrupt and cannot be set (just reports
'unconfigured'). Setting timezone etc. from the command line is fine and
it reports the correct time.

Another issue that I found is that if I try to log out I am warned that
Nautilus is still copying/deleting files, whereas in fact it should have
finished those activities as the files in question had been
moved/deleted hours before. Just wondered if those outstanding actions
(which I am warned about every time I try to log out now) are causing
the hang on shutdown and then resulting in the 'unclean' filesystem flag
being set.

I cannot remember the last time I used a floppy; indeed I had to get one

Rather than meddling with the OS while we are waiting for the next

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28

2009-06-19 Thread Nicholas Roberts
I have resisted posting because 'me too' is not helpful. However, I am
operating two very different machines (no two pieces of hardware the
same) with the same operating system (Jaunty [ext4] with all the latest
updates). Both machines exhibit the same 'freezing' problem on deleting
files and the effect is random with seemingly no preference to size or
number of files being deleted.

As an engineer I hate to give qualitative (versus quantitative) comment,
but I have noticed that the frequency of system freezes has increased
roughly threefold (conservatively) in the last few weeks, particularly
since the move to 2.6.28-13 from 2.6.28-12.

For the first time in 30 years I am having to modify my software to have
it not delete temporary files just to avoid the operating system
hanging... madness! Dare I say I cannot remember Windoze ever having a
bug this bad; I think this one needs nailing fast gang.

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28

2009-06-19 Thread Nicholas Roberts
Regarding Øyvind's wise words...

I completely agree Øyvind and you are right sir. That said, there are an
awful lot of people (like me) who have opted for ext4 believing that any
major bugs would be sorted in the usual timely fashion that we have come
to enjoy from the Ubuntu community. I think in retrospect ext4 should
not have been offered as an option because it is just 'too tempting' to
either take the option at install time or follow the procedure for
upgrading from ext3 to ext4; you only have to look at the plethora of
posts in this and other fora to see how many folk (a lot of them newbies
to Linux and/or technically weak) were and still are desperate to try
out the new FS because that is a normal human trait.

I can live with the bug or go back to ext3 and wait for KK; my post was
not really about me. My real point is the damage to reputation and trust
that something like this has with the public at large, particularly
those 'converts' from Window$ who maybe are not as technically minded as
us (and use such fora as this to research what is going on) who will
'bad mouth' Linux/Ubuntu and got back to Windoze for all the wrong
reasons.

My personal advice... either the bug gets fixed in a timely fashion or a
much stronger warning is issued (including taking the option away to opt
for ext4).

Please be assured of my best intentions... Ubuntu is king in my book!
Here endeth my lesson, I will not post further on the issue unless I
spot a solution ;-)

[Bug 321528] Re: ext4 defrag / defragment tool in Jaunty - include

2009-05-01 Thread Nicholas Roberts
Just a quick comment if I may...

Reading the many discussions/forums etc. concerning ext4, I believe one
of the MAIN reasons that folk are looking to get a defrag tool running
is to 'refresh' files on their disk having moved from ext3 to ext4,
rather than worrying about the (minimal) benefits of a defrag itself.
Indeed, that is why I came across this thread because I upgraded from
Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04, switched to ext4 and then wanted to refresh all of
my files to the new format - apparently the most effective way to do
this is using a defrag tool.

Maybe if there was an alternate (and 'safe/easy') way to refresh all
files on the disk to ext4 most folk would be happy and maybe wait for
9.10KK to get a completely stable defrag installation?
