Moreover I think the affected package is not gnome-power-manager, because I couldn't find any entry in /proc that enabled setting the brightness (IIRC it was something like /proc/acpi/sony/brightness in Feisty). I've had this problem myself and it was only due to the restricted modules packages being released a bit too late on repositories...
