[Bug 1970889] [NEW] libjson dependency error

2022-04-29 Thread Niels Overkamp
Public bug reported:

Running 'zmap' results in the following error: "zmap: error while
loading shared libraries: libjson-c.so.4: cannot open shared object
file: No such file or directory". It seems that it is built with
libjson-c4 instead of the new libjson-c5 that is available for Ubuntu
Jammy.

** Affects: zmap (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1943381] Re: what a nightmare (dual boot install Ubuntu) grub is messing up everything

2021-09-13 Thread Niels Magendans
Okay! I think I solved it, in a way I didn't expect to.

So... Everytime I have to fix the standard booting to even be able to
get into Windows. That's the order in which I do things. Then, I try
dual boot installation with Ubuntu and it failed everytime. This time,
it failed again. On the grub part and it was a fatal error again.

And I just made an assumption... "it seems to be the end of the
installation where this happens". And previously I just threw the whole
partition away again lol. Because it used to be no problem before this
stuff happened again. Because I considered the installation as probably
"completely failed", because of that.

But now, I thought... I have already tried so many things. I know where
this is going if I don't make a change. And I thought well... let's just
keep the partitions, and try to fix Grub in fact... with Ubuntu-liveUSB
and installing and running boot-repair. As if Ubuntu was installed
successfully apart from that.

So I did? Then, it did his recommendations. And then he asked me for
Pastebin logging, I confirmed. And then he said an error had occurred
during the repair. Giving me the link. But then at the bottom it said
change BIOS to legacy to be able to boot into your Ubuntu install (okay,
it has recognized an install of it at least, or the attempt anyway that
seemed to have been aborted) and then type command [sudo update-grub] in
order to add the Windows entry to your Grub menu.

So made a photo of that instruction, just in case.

Changed BIOS to legacy, rebooted... without any USB's anymore. Just let
it run lol. But Ubuntu started lol!!! It did!

And you know what? It seemed to be fully functioning. But I didn't know
yet (and I must say, I still don't know 100% sure). Then it was
detecting updates. And I thought okay well let's do those first and then
after them try that update-grub command. Then, even though I had
Livepatch and I thought that meant I didn't have to reboot again after
updating, it did ask me for a reboot. So I did. It was part of this
update I guess.

Then I got into a grub screen selecting Ubuntu or... and it was already
showing, the windows installation. But I thought "no this is still part
of the Ubuntu update", and thought I still don't know if the Windows
option would actually wórk as well, instead of just showing the option
(which guarantees nothing). So I chose Ubuntu. It did so succesfully
again. And then I got the opportunity to make the grub command. So sudo
update-grub. It did something.

And then it was time to test. So, guess what?? I just rebooted, chose
the Windows option this time. And here I am! Lol. Posting from Windows!

I wanted to share this because of that. Because in my view of this, this
has meant that I was able to install Ubuntu in parts. Going through most
of the installation succesfully, then using a live-USB-boot-Ubuntu again
to fire up boot-repair. And I was able to fix the remaining Ubuntu
problems that the installation was apparently still having.

I never would have thought it would work that way. That I could just
"finish Ubuntu installation" with a different program, in this case
boot-repair. To get the last grub step finished, apparently so!

So here I am, finally both work. Covered it extensively, with all my emotions
etc almost lol. But you should be able to..
You should be able to use it. If anything I gave too much information. But if
you just filter the unimportant stuff out, you should be able to use this.

And this comment is for the developer that was going to investigate this
as well. Never thought I was going to be able to fix this on my own. But
I did. In a surprising way.

Thanks all, bye!

[Bug 1943381] Re: what a nightmare (dual boot install Ubuntu) grub is messing up everything

2021-09-13 Thread Niels Magendans
So I had another crash. Even though I thought I managed to fix grub this
time, before trying the Ubuntu install again.

I don't know why it's still doing this. But I kept having to switch
between CSM to try secureboot, and uefi and legacy settings for the
Ubuntu program boot-repair. But honestly to god I still don't know when
I should have what option enabled.

I just kept changing it just to keep boot-repair from asking me do you
want to try again or continue "anyway", which sounds even more
dangerous.

So honestly all this stuff, but really I don't have a clue what I'm
doing. At all. Only thing though is that BIOS seems to have the Windows
8/10 features selected instead of Other OS. Which would have been the
default, it said so somewhere on the internet. But, it seems like it
would make sense for it to require this Other OS option for Ubuntu to
install correctly. But then I saw it Windows 8/10 might prevent security
problems this way. And I have enough security issue suspicions to not
want to risk that (yet). But I do want Ubuntu.

So hopefully I can recover from this fatal error again, and pull it
off.. eventually. It only needs to work once lol.

Bye.

[Bug 1943381] [NEW] what a nightmare (dual boot install Ubuntu) grub is messing up everything

2021-09-12 Thread Niels Magendans
Public bug reported:

This started with me thinking I had created a surplus partition years
ago already when trying to set dual boot up Ubuntu + Windows 10. I got
it working, but I had my eye on this 530mb partition that I thought
wasn't supposed to be there.

But it stayed.

Now only recently, I ran out of room on my Windows 10. But I had a huge
amount of unused space on Ubuntu allocated storage. So... This was
already a hassle. It was annoying AF, but... for a very brief... minute
or so, it seemed like I had pulled it off. The threat I was dealing with
was having to move space in front of the Ubuntu directory. In order to
put it next to the Windows partition, for Windows to be able to add that
space to it's total storage.

I did one dumb move though (yeah bear with me I'm going to explain the
whole thing because that's how fed up I am with this, maybe 2 minutes
more reading time for you but a freakin days worth of work for me).
After I had gotten away somehow with moving Ubuntu a place (it could
still find it when selecting it in grub at startup and booted fine), I
decided... after a little... search.. that this 530mb partition could
go. So I deleted it.

Then. Windows couldn't boot anymore. But Ubuntu still could. Now... I
approached this in the most simple way I could IMO, which was... recover
the lost partition fully.. so hopefully it could do it's mystery job of
booting up Windows 10. Using "testdisk". And then... I found the
partition. Made a call to "write". And then everything got wiped, and
the whole situation got mirrored (funnily enough). Now the 530mb
partition was the only one I had left. And everything on there... the
working Ubuntu partition, the still fully available Windows 10 partition
that just couldn't boot anymore. All gone.

Now, I could try and recover that data again. But I took my loss. And
the problem I think right now??? When I succeeded to install the dual
boot Windows Ubuntu years ago, if something was wrong, I could delete
the partition of Ubuntu and I could just reinstall it. While apparently
right now, that can cause (huge, IMO) problems. Because I started with
using an Ubuntu live-usb. And deleted that remaining now completely
useless 530mb partition I had as well. Then I tried doing it in a
different order, installing Ubuntu and thén Windows 10. But (don't
remember exactly anymore) I soon found out that was the wrong way to go.
I eventually got windows running. Thén I tried installing Ubuntu next to
it. And it was failing again! Because all the screens were... loading...
from top to bottom or bottom to top (as if a scanner line moves up or
down the screen to go to the next screens to display), and it was really
laggy etc. And I think, this is where it went wrong... because I had
still been used to being able to just remove partitions and install them
back again... I wanted to with this failed install of Ubuntu again. But
apparently... there was another... 500mb partition, between the Windows
and Ubuntu partition AND one of around 530 at the end after the Ubuntu
partition. So.. I wanted to remove the Ubuntu partition. But I wanted to
include it with Windows 10 again (somehow... because it had worked
previously to then select the partition size in the Ubuntu installation
"next-to-Windows" again). So I decided to remove that 500mb partition
between Ubuntu and Windows as well. And anyway... I ended up with
problems booting up just Windows already basically. Without even being
able to retry Ubuntu install successfully again. I couldn't even get
into Windows again. (we're almost there) In the end figured out the only
thing that grub rescue responded to was ctrl-alt-delete, which would
reboot it again giving me back the brief option of selecting a boot
device again without having to use a forced shutdown (yet) from grub
rescue. Made a Windows image usb stick. Selected that as boot. And
finally found that I could pick "repair windows", and then go for the
option of command line. And then type "Bootrec.exe /FixMbr". And then I
got rid of this grub rescue trap, and was able to boot into my already
installed Windows again. I took a break! But in the end I thought..
okay... maybe I still got a shot at this. Tried again, and now..?? It
didn't recognize the Windows OS clearly on my 1TB SSD. It took up all
the space, so it should have been able to detect it. Tried repairing C
disk when I was able again, because it can happen if Windows had trouble
shutting down or something. Did a tip with "chkdsk C: /F" to fix any
problems booting Windows. And then it "should have been able to detect
Windows", and it was still not able to. Then, I thought I was very
close, and thought okay well I just need to make a partition for Ubuntu
on my own and select that one to install Ubuntu to manually. And
then..?? I couldn't as easily. I still got trouble. Apparently need to
specify all kinds of shit for that to be able to work again (but still
not getting there... obviously, from my trouble reporting this

[Bug 1884754] Re: Fractional scaling does not persist across reboots in resizable VM windows

2020-07-22 Thread Niels Keurentjes
Behaviour seems somewhat improved but the root issue is still there.

When rebooting with VMware Player running the scaling is now remembered
correctly, however if I then shut the VM down completely and restart it,
it still starts up at first in default screen size, removing the
scaling.

Also the scaling modifications seem more aggressive now - if I have the
windowed VMware Player maximized on my 4k screen (practical resolution
3840x2015, note not 2160 pixels high due to host window chrome) it
allows me to set 125% scaling, but if I then resize the host window or
just unmaximize the 125% options disappear from setting *and Ubuntu
snaps right back to 200%*.

So effectively what I described in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1884754/comments/9
is still happening as before.

I still think
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1884754/comments/11
is the only true fix - in _virtual_ monitors the system should never
intervene with scaling settings at all and just trust whatever the user
selects for himself, as he may be resizing, maximizing, changing
displays etc. all the time.

[Bug 1885025] Re: Seamless mouse breaks when changing display scaling

2020-06-30 Thread Niels Keurentjes
I can confirm this does seem to 'fix' the issue. At first the seamless
mouse gets in some "hybrid state" where I can move the mouse out of the
window, but the Ubuntu screen still shows it stuck at the corner. When I
then resize the screen it snaps back to normal behaviour. I suppose that
supports the soft cursor theory.

Importantly VMware Player does *not* expose this setting as a UI option
(unless I'm completely blind), so I had to edit the .vmx file and
manually add:

mks.gamingMouse.policy = "absolute"

(from what I read this is the .vmx equivalent of the "never" policy)

Considering that Mutter indeed knows that a monitor is virtual -
shouldn't it just ignore resolution completely for resolving existing
configuration? It changes all the time while dragging windows on the
host machine, maximizing, minimizing etc

[Bug 1885026] Re: Fractional scaling contains 175% option twice

2020-06-26 Thread Niels Keurentjes
Thanks Daniel for referencing that comment, it's indeed also relevant
here.

It seems weird as a whole that the available scaling options appear to
depend on common monitor resolutions. As stated there at 3840x2075
(that's 4k minus the VMware window borders) I see the
100/125/175/175/250 selector, at 3480x1859 I don't even get any
fractional scaling options at all.

It looks like somebody tried to make it really user friendly by
tailoring the experience towards the end user ("nobody wants 300%
scaling on a 640x480 screen") and then completely overlooked the
windowed VM scenario, or any kind of remote desktop where you also want
to be able to set the scaling correctly based on the host machine's
resolution.

[Bug 1884754] Re: Fractional scaling not persisted in VMware Player

2020-06-25 Thread Niels Keurentjes
I think I just found out the real issue, and that information is not
going to help you because it will contain seemingly random indicators
depending on how I size my windows.

VMware Player, like most virtualization software, runs windowed by
default, and that window is dynamically resizeable. Now someone in all
their wisdom at Ubuntu apparently decided that the available scaling
options depend on the current resolution.

So when I keep the settings screen open, and start resizing the window,
thus dynamically resizing the "monitor", I can see the available scaling
options change in real time. At 3840x2075 (that's 4k minus the VMware
window borders) I see the 100/125/175/175/250 selector, at 3480x1859 I
don't even get any fractional scaling options, at really low resolutions
all scaling options disappear.

When VMware Player boots, it snaps to the default 1024x768 size. So
that's the monitor resolution when the desktop loads, it concludes
scaling is not allowed at that level, and resets to 100%, no matter what
it was before the reboot.

The real issue appears to be: scaling settings should not be modified
based on resolution during boot.

[Bug 1885026] [NEW] Fractional scaling contains 175% option twice

2020-06-24 Thread Niels Keurentjes
Public bug reported:

When opening the Settings, select Displays and then enable "Fractional
Scaling". The Scale options change to 100% / 125% / 175% / 175% / 250%

If you click the first 175% option it will even automatically select the
second one instead.

The third option should likely be 150% instead.

[Bug 1884754] [NEW] Fractional scaling broken in VMware Player

2020-06-23 Thread Niels Keurentjes
Public bug reported:

Related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+bug/1825593,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1852860, but
those report the issues are fixed. They also do not mention the VMware
specific issues.

Install Ubuntu 20.04 in VMware Player, install open-vm-tools (done
automatically with Easy Install), go to settings, enable Fractional
Scaling and select any non-integer value.

Results:
 - The scaling is applied
 - VMware Tools (open-vm-tools) appears to break, no more seamless mouse
between host and Ubuntu
 - After next reboot the setting is reverted to 100%

on the next page https://ubuntu.com/support/community-support I clicked on

Get your Lifepatch token. On the next page I got a key and two command lines to
enable Lifepatch

sudo snap install canonical-livepatch
sudo canonical-livepatch enable ***key*** (a 32 digits code with letters and

My problem was easily solved using the commands above in a terminal

I feel silly that I have reported this two days ago as a bug. I took me
two days to find a solution.

Now an icon on top toolbar shows that lifepatch is activated.

When a new user gets created in 20.04 and one uses zfs then the new user
gets a home in /home/newuser but the user does not get his own dataset
but is just placed in /rpool/USERDATA

This means that snapshots for additional users cannot explicitly
created, they cannot have their own encrypted homes, you cannot set
quotas via ZFS and so on.

I would expect that a new user would get their own dataset like the
first created user on Installation.

This works around the problem for me.

[Bug 1739893] Re: gnome-sushi freezes my computer when trying to preview .odt-files

2018-11-16 Thread Niels Buettner
I had the same problem in Ubuntu 18.04.1 with latest Updates to now,
Gnome 3.28.2, 64 Bit System.

Problem:
Preview of ODT-File lets freeze the whole desktop suddenly (suddenly fan begins
to rotate hearable), but nothing works (at least with Ctrl+Alt+F3 I could
switch to console and after login as user (no sudo!) I could reboot without
problems).

Solution:
I searched for a possible solution. Then I read #4 (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-sushi/+bug/1739893/comments/4 )
of "Daniel (2-ubuntuone-4)" and tried his suggustion to install unoconv. Now I
am able to preview ODT-files without freezing the X-Server.

last but not least: Thank you!

[Bug 1795479] [NEW] ark does not save pdf from internal viewer

2018-10-01 Thread Niels Elgaard Larsen
Public bug reported:

Open a zip file with ark
in ark settings choose preview the file with internal previewer.
Open a pdf file from the zip archive.

Save the file using "Save as by choosing a new directory (outside /tmp/)

The file is saved, but when the PDF previewer is closed, the file disappears.
an strace of the ark process shows
  unlink("/home/elgaard/foo.pdf")

which is where the PDF was saved to.

I did have a similar problems years ago, and I am almost sure that I checked
the option "open the file with associated application" back then and suspect
that the setting was changed behind my back at a later update.

Side-note: I believe this has been fixed in Artful or Bionic as Ubuntu
has migrated to use the debhelper based dbgsym packages (with only a
minor difference in the filename extension). I remember it as Artful
(but the reference eludes me at the moment and I am too lazy to check).

As I recall, this is not because dh_clean does not remove the file but
because dpkg-source generates the file on a -S build now (after running
dh_clean).

[Bug 1752938] Re: Upgrading Ubuntu 18.04 disables GPU hardware acceleration

2018-03-03 Thread Niels Böhm
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1751414 ***

On Xubuntu, can you try downgrading the package xubuntu-default-settings
from version 18.04.2 to version 18.04.1? Maybe it's related to what I'm
seeing in bug #1752798

(you can find the older package here:

settings/18.04.1/+build/13749132 )

Here's the lightdm.log of the system run with the package version that
prevents booting to Desktop.

Note that it shows that it permanently retries starting lightdm until
the user has had enough and reboots or powers off the system (hence the

[Bug 1752798] [NEW] prevents successful boot to desktop and gets stuck in a trying-to-start-X loop

2018-03-01 Thread Niels Böhm
Public bug reported:

Upon upgrading the package from version 18.04.1 to 18.04.2 and
subsequent reboot, the system is rendered unable to start lightdm and
gets stuck in an endless loop retrying.

This happened on 2 laptops, one company machine and one personal
machine.

I'm running bionic beaver on both of them, with bionic-updates and
bionic-proposed repositories enabled (however, xubuntu-default-settings
is from plain bionic).

Downgrading and putting the package on hold is a viable workaround for
the time being.

[Bug 1745200] [NEW] update version or downgrade svn

2018-01-24 Thread niels
Public bug reported:

The program fails at the first revision with a deleted file.

As described in https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=204023 there
is a bug in svn-all-fast-export if you use it with svn 1.9 which is the default
at ubuntu 16.04.
There is a new version 1.11
https://github.com/svn-all-fast-export/svn2git/releases/tag/1.0.11 which fix
the bug. So it would be great if the source are updated. Otherwise the package
should be removed.

[Bug 1697120] Re: artful's apt-file complains about Ubuntu sources.list

2017-06-27 Thread Niels Thykier
The actual warning is from apt and not apt-file. It occurs because
multiple "fetch" directive refer to the same file, but they come from
different lines in the apt sources.list.

As noted (see #1579372), a long term fix would be to provide the
Contents in the "per component" location on the archive. Short term fix
is to merge the sources.list lines.

[Bug 1654703] Re: /usr/share/doc/fig2dev/CHANGES.gz is a broken symlink

2017-05-21 Thread Niels Thykier
This looks like it is caused by the Ubuntu specific changes to
dh_installchangelogs.

Namely, the original debhelper will look for (among other) "CHANGES" as
an upstream changelog. Ubuntu have removed this to save disk space and
leads to debhelper picking "changelog" as a candidate for the "main
package" (and nothing for others).

[Bug 730622] Re: no way to specify all architectures

2017-05-21 Thread Niels Thykier
Hi,

Can you give a case where it would be useful to ask debhelper to build a
package for an architecture, where it is not supported (as declared by
the maintainer)? The only case I can come up with is that the
Architecture field is wrong/out of date. Though in this case, the
proper solution would be to update the Architecture field.

[Bug 1641283] Re: Please sync apt-file from Debian unstable

2017-04-27 Thread Niels Thykier
Please sync apt-file from Debian unstable. The remaining Ubuntu delta
is unnecessary since the downloading of Contents files have been
delegated to APT and configured to look both in the Debian and the
Ubuntu locations.

Thanks,

[Bug 1623256] Re: adjust the way to create dbgsym packages like Debian does

2017-01-13 Thread Niels Thykier
Not sure if this is still relevant, but ...

If you are going to make debhelper use ".ddeb" rather than ".deb" for
dbgsym packages (and dpkg doesn't DTRT), I strongly recommend relying on
the "build_and_rename_deb" sub in dh_builddeb rather than computing the
filename yourself. Otherwise, "dh_gencontrol -- -V $(VERSION)" is going
to be needlessly painful (like it was with udebs).

[Bug 1641283] Re: Please sync apt-file from Debian unstable

2016-11-13 Thread Niels Thykier
Hi Hans,

With my upstream hat on, I believe that delta is redundant thanks to
changes in apt and apt-file. I do not remember the exact apt-file
version that solves it, but I can dig it up if it is relevant (it is
definitely prior to 3.1.4).

Also, I typoed the version; I meant please sync apt-file/3.1.4 (will fix
the bug description)

You can also add the following after \usepackage{titlesec} to only apply
the patch when you're on the specific version of titlesec (which is what
I did on a shared project). Remove the \makeatletter and \makeatother
and change \usepackage to \RequirePackage when you're adding it to your
classfile right after \RequirePackage{titlesec}.

\@ifpackagelater{titlesec}{2016/03/21}{%
% Package titlesec is on version 2.10.2 or higher, nothing to do %
}{%
% Check if package titlesec is on version 2.10.1 %
\@ifpackagelater{titlesec}{2016/03/15}{%
% Package titlesec on version 2.10.1, patch accordingly %
\usepackage{etoolbox}%
\makeatletter

\patchcmd{\ttlh@hang}{\parindent\z@}{\parindent\z@\leavevmode}{}{}%
\patchcmd{\ttlh@hang}{\noindent}{}{}{}%
\makeatother
}{%

[Bug 521533]

2016-10-10 Thread Niels Elgaard Larsen
Today I received a PDF with forms filled in, that I had to forward as a
normal PDF (using "save as" or print to PDF file). Some fields worked as
expected. But some were missing in the resulting PDF.

After quite some time I tried editing every single form field, ending up
with the same values as before, and then printing to to PDF. Then
everything working, i.e. all form fields were saved to the PDF file.

I use Okular 0.25, Platform 4.14.23

2016-02-18 Thread Niels Mayer
mudita24(1) is no longer affected by this bug because kernel

supports a working "ICEnsemble ICE1712 (Envy24)" module snd_ice1712.

** Changed in: mudita24 (Ubuntu Xenial)
   Status: Confirmed => Fix Released
