@Matthew. I have not added any extra lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. I had to un-mute the sound though. Also you should make sure to add the dkms package before installing David's .deb package. There is an improvement with the 20090321 daily-live cdrom. It boots into a lowres black X screen with the message: Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.
