There is no kernel upgrade because you are on a different stack. You have to install it manually via terminal. alex, you know that by switching to EFI you did nothing? you are suppose to not only switch mode to UEFI, but ALSO install OS in UEFI mode for brightness to work on .29 kernel. Unfortunately, it seems like the fix for Brightness control in BIOS mode broke the brightness in UEFI mode. To all those wondering about backlight in Precise and Quantal, if you switch your BIOS mode to UEFI, and reinstall Ubuntu in UEFI mode, it will fix the brightness issue. You can use your function keys out of the box, and they will change the brightness accordingly. The only issue is, with the fresh Precise installation, you will need to update your kernel through the Updater, otherwise your brightness will be stuck on the lowest one. Daniel, did you actually reinstalled Ubuntu in UEFI mode? because it fixed the issue for me. Simply switching BIOS mode to UEFI mode doesn't help. Your system still boots in Legacy mode. I have no idea what happened but installing Ubuntu in UEFI mode on my XPS 13 laptop fixed the brightness issues. I am able to change brightness with function keys and it will lower or increase the brightness accordingly. LoL, My brightness works as intended. I am on Ubuntu 13.04 64bit Kernel 3.8.0-27-generic It didn't work when I installed Ubuntu in BIOS mode (since XPS 13 ships with Motherboard that is UEFI), when I switched to UEFI mode and reinstalled my OS, brightness issue was fixed. [Bug 1086289] [NEW] Wrong grub-efi resolution during OS boot menu selection
Public bug reported: So I recently decided to try to install windows 7 and ubuntu 12.10 in UEFI mode and succeeded in doing that. Both system load as the should and everything work perfectly but there is one thing that keeps bothering me and it is grub resolution. Before that I was using dual boot system Ubuntu and Windows in BIOS mode and grub resolution was correct 1366x768 (which is my native resolution) After reinstalling both OS in UEFI mode grub resolution became wrong (which I assume is 640x480) BUT Splash screen resolution on boot and shutdown is CORRECT (1366x768). Only grub boot menu is incorrect. What I tried: editing sudo gedit /etc/default/grub and uncommenting GRUB_GFXMODE + setting resolution 1366x768 DIDN'T WORK Tried to edit line above + sudo gedit /etc/grub.d/00_header where I add line set gfxpayload=keep under line set gfxmode=${GRUB_GFXMODE} DIDN'T WORK. So I consider that to be a bug cause again when I had both systems installed in BIOS mode my resolution was correct in grub menu.
