A, thanks. I don't have a link for the trash on the desktop though.

[Bug 1968368] [NEW] System sets my output device to my microphone

2022-04-08 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

When I plug in my Samson Go Mic microphone, Ubuntu sets my Output Device
to "Speakers -- GoMic compact condenser mic," and I can no longer hear
any sound.

I can manually switch to "Speakers Built-in Audio," and then all is
fine. But the setting will not be sticky. After I unplug the microphone,
the Output Device will again switch to the microphone.

What I expected: When I plug in my microphone, Ubuntu should not change
my Output Device, and sound output should continue as usual. And if I do
have to change the setting manually, the change should stick.

The issue is discussed here:
https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/18-04-my-output-device-is-set-to-my-microphone/16613

Using pavucontrol to make the changed setting sticky, as suggested
there, seems to work for me. But this is a workaround.

[Bug 1944576] [NEW] Copy/paste still fails in LibreOffice

2021-09-22 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

I am still running into the bug reported in Bug #1879968:

"In Ubuntu 19.10 and 20.04 there was a bug that caused copy and paste
operations to fail pretty often: the text that was pasted was not the
text that was just copied. See the long discussion at bug #1852183. The
bug was recently marked closed, since the package mutter -
3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04.1 landed in focal-updates and makes the bug occur
much less frequently.

"Unfortunately the bug still exists, and is not difficult to reproduce."

For me the bug still exists: "Copy" in LibreOffice Writer now fails
invariably.

Using Ubuntu 20.04, I have four possible ways to log in:

  1. Wayland
  2. Ubuntu
  3. Gnome (vanilla Gnome session, using Wayland)
  4. Gnome on Xorg

The bug occurs in all four.

The bug occurs whether I use CTRL-C or use "Edit --> Copy" from the
LibreOffice menu.

("Paste," by the way, is not a problem. I can paste whatever is in the
clipboard. The problem lies with "Copy.")

I am not able to say whether the fault lies with Mutter, with
LibreOffice, with both, or with something else.

** Affects: mutter (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1887190] Re: MSFT Touchpad not working on Lenovo Legion-5 15ARH05

2021-01-05 Thread Eamon O Callaghan
Thank you everyone for fixing this, I've been following this thread for
the last few weeks and today is the first time I've managed to get it
working.

For any noobs like me that are on Ubuntu this is the guide that I
followed to upgrade to kernel 5.11 and everything works perfectly for
me, both the touchpad and the brightness controls.

Upgrade kernel

Change current directory to /tmp
cd /tmp

Download the latest mainline kernel from 5.11.x branch by copying
and pasting this:

wget -c
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.11-rc2/amd64/linux-headers-5.11.0-051100rc2_5.11.0-051100rc2.202101032030_all.deb
wget -c
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.11-rc2/amd64/linux-headers-5.11.0-051100rc2-generic_5.11.0-051100rc2.202101032030_amd64.deb
wget -c
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.11-rc2/amd64/linux-image-unsigned-5.11.0-051100rc2-generic_5.11.0-051100rc2.202101032030_amd64.deb
wget -c
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.11-rc2/amd64/linux-modules-5.11.0-051100rc2-generic_5.11.0-051100rc2.202101032030_amd64.deb

Install new kernel
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Reboot the system
sudo shutdown -r now

Update packages list
sudo apt-get update

Upgrade packages
sudo apt-get upgrade

Reboot the system if needed
sudo shutdown -r now

Check the OS distro
lsb_release -a

Check kernel version
uname -r

That's it, now you should be running on the Linux Kernel 5.11rc2

Guide taken from this wonderful page:
https://sypalo.com/how-to-upgrade-ubuntu

Thanks to everyone for their hard work, sorry for posting this noob
guide here but it took me weeks to figure out an easy way to do it
(patching was beyond my abilities).

[Bug 1025388] Re: Internal mic stops working when plugging in headphones

2020-10-22 Thread O Gopal
For a fix that worked for me, see
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1218136/internal-microphone-doesnt-work-
when-using-headphones/1285982#1285982.

The fix:

 1. Run

  sudo apt install alsa-tools-gui

  hdajackretask

 2. Select the appropriate sound card up top in Select a codec.

 3. Then make the Black Mic (headphone jack) override Not connected.

 4. Lower right corner, select Install boot override.

 5. Then reboot and test.

[Bug 1889991] Re: Highlight for the task switcher is too subtle

2020-10-20 Thread O Gopal
I'm sure the highlight *is* perfectly visible, perhaps for a vast
majority of users. But not for me. (And I doubt I'm alone.)

I agree that orange would be jarring. For me the highlight in previous
versions worked perfectly well.

Is there a workaround, an easy way an individual user can override the
change and restore the highlight to what it was? (I've tried switching
themes, but that doesn't seem to affect the highlight.)

This change has been ported upstream. Does that mean that upstream has
accepted it?

I appreciate the efforts of your design team to provide the best
experience for the majority of Ubuntu users. But at the end of the day,
I need something that works for me.

Yes, if you can find a solution in a previous design, I would be most
grateful.

Thank you.

Cordially,
O Govinda

[Bug 1816045] Re: secureboot-db: release upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 modifies changelog.gz but resets mtime

2020-09-04 Thread Oliver O.
Thanks for explaining. I am using an internally developed, Python-based
backup system. It makes backups from Btrfs snapshots and regularly
verifies the integrity of the entire restore process. The verification
shows discrepancies such as the one above.

As most backup systems rely on mtime to detect changes for performance,
I suppose this is really a widespread problem. It probably goes
undetected in the majority of cases as backup systems usually don't do
100% integrity verification lacking file system snapshots.

My backup system uses regexp-based filtering to switch from mtime to
content change detection. In this case the relevant line in its YAML
configuration file is:

  - { pattern: '^usr/share/doc/[^/]*/changelog[^/]*$', filter:
compare-contents }

The problem is not just limited to package installation files as this
excerpt shows:

  - { pattern: '^var/lib/sudo/', filter: compare-contents }
  - { pattern: '^var/lib/machines$', filter: compare-contents }
  - { pattern: '^var/cache/man/(.*/)?index\.db$', filter: compare-contents }

And there are even more entries in my list. I wonder whether tinkering
with mtime is really such a good idea...

Can you refrain from posting any more comments until you actually read
the bug submitter's (now twelve-year-old) description and steps to
reproduce?

Well, let's see. It's not going to be handled in the web page CSS, is
it.

Because the web page author doesn't care that you're using Firefox to
save the page as PDF, and that it happens to strip hyperlinks of their
functionality while retaining their styling.

Maybe the save-to-PDF feature should pull a piece of CSS from behind the
magic curtain, and apply it to de-style the links that it has no
intention of making work.

It was not my intent to design the exact UI in my comment, and still
isn't; but can we pretend I had included the obligatory "[ ] don't
show me this dialog again".

> Furthermore, I'm not sure if it's possible to detect if the user has
selected 'Save as PDF' under macOS, or is using a PDF printer driver
under any OS.

I'm pretty sure this entire bug is not about using a "PDF driver under
any OS" but saving a PDF from Firefox to a file.

[Bug 1878286] [NEW] top-bar icons stretched out

2020-05-12 Thread PJ O
Public bug reported:

Some applications, such as Minecraft (Not the launcher, but the game
itself running under Java) have a stretched-out icon in the app menu.

I'm guessing this a bug with `gnome-shell` but I am unsure.

To reproduce:

- Start an application, such as Minecraft. Observe the stretched out
icon in the top-bar app menu.

Expected behavior:

- The icon should show next to the application name in gray scale

Actual behavior:

- The icon does appear gray scale, but is stretched to match the height
of the top-bar.

Ubuntu: 20.04 LTS (Upgraded from 18.04 LTS)

Gnome: 3.36.1

I attached an image demonstrating the bug.

[Bug 1871481] Re: Ubiquity slideshow wrongly shows Thunderbird as "supported software"

2020-04-08 Thread O Gopal
Thank you for responding.

This is certainly a dupe of bug 1869008. I don't know how to check the
version number. I tried 'dpkg -s ubiquity-slideshow-ubuntu' but got the
message that such a package is not installed. I haven't seen any other
places listing Thunderbird as supported.

[Bug 1859160] Re: Snapd fails to delete obsolete dev-loops, thus causing delay at lockscreen

2020-01-14 Thread O Gopal
Here you go, Zygmunt.

These are the outputs of losetup and "system-analyze blame" before and
after deleting "dev/loop10."

It appears that after the deletion the deleted item reappears as
"dev/loop20."

Over the course of a couple of days, my logins from the lockscreen have
slowed again. I don't have the technical background to know what's going
on, but - - - here's the output.

[Bug 1859160] [NEW] Snapd fails to delete obsolete dev-loops, thus causing delay at lockscreen

2020-01-10 Thread O Gopal
Public bug reported:

It appears that when installing new versions of software, snapd fails to delete
the dev-loops for older versions.

With Ubuntu 18.04 running on an X-1 Carbon Thinkpad (5th Generation)
with an SSD, my logins after the screen locked became slow. There would
be a delay of maybe 10 to 15 seconds before the login would complete. So
I updated to 19.10. Same story.

Running "systemd-analyze blame," I saw a lot of time-using entries for
"dev-loop[number]."

Running "losetup-a," I was able to see that some of the loops pertained
to obsolete versions of software, especially prior versions of gnome.

After I used "losetup -d" to delete such loops, my logins are quick
again.

>From what I've read online, it seems that snapd fails to delete such old
loops and this is what causes the delay.

What I expected:
My login would be practically instant.

What happened:
My login took 10 to 15 seconds.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:
The problem occurred consistently, with every login from the lockscreen. When I
first installed 18.04 this did not occur.

By the way, when I tried to report this issue using Apport ("ubuntu-bug
snapd"), I received the message "The problem cannot be reported. This is
not an official Ubuntu package."

[Bug 1551949]

2019-11-25 Thread Kaz-o
One issue here is that the output is deceptive.

The document is rendered such that the links look like links: they are
rendered in blue, and underlined.

I was fooled by this and sent a document to someone without actually
trying the links.

If you're not going to make it work, the least you could do is not fake
the appearance, you know? Would it be difficult to pop up a dialog box
or something?

[Bug 534662]

2019-11-20 Thread Lxnay-o
Userspace is not a problem here, many distributions have GL
implementation switch tools already.

I have users reporting that 6.14.4 suffers from the problem reported here.
Basically, radeon.ko is loaded by X with KMS enabled, (CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=n
but modprobe.d/ contains "options radeon modeset=1") but X fails to start with:

(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
[dri] This chipset requires a kernel module version of 1.17.0,
[dri] but the kernel reports a version of 2.16.0.[dri] Make sure your module is
loaded prior to starting X, and
[dri] that this driver was built with support for KMS.
[dri] Aborting.

The problem is that xf86-video-ati is built with KMS and radeon.ko loads
with modeset=1 but still, X fails to load due to the initialization
(bug?) issue reported by the OP. Restarting X fixes the problem. I do
think there is something to fix here and it would be nice to at least
fix this chicken/egg issue.

[Bug 534662]

2019-11-20 Thread Lxnay-o
This is becoming a problem for many people and distros now that KMS is
mandatory.
On Linux, if CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS is not enabled, X loads (through the DRI
interface I suppose) radeon.ko correctly but X initialization fails as pointed
out 3 years ago by Brice Goglin.

Otoh, forcing CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y in distributed kernels makes fglrx
users' life really hard. So, what are distributors supposed to do in
your opinion? Do we really have to consider fglrx and radeon to be
mutually exclusive at package manager level? That would be suboptimal as
well.

[Bug 1826688] Re: GNOME Shell icon grid fade in/out is sometimes missing at the top/bottom of the screen

2019-04-30 Thread PJ O
I added the newest journalctl to the post above, and here's the entire
thing.

** Description changed:

After installing an update for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, GNOME's App Launcher
screen faces graphical issues when scrolling. To reproduce this, simply
open the Application menu and scroll in the paginated list. If the bug
is present, the screen will fail to update completly; the animation wil
play through, but the icons will remain in place or "chopped off," it
seems the frame isn't completly refreshed? It's fixed after a few
seconds or by moving the mouse.

I'm using GNOME 3.28.2 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

But then that means whatever you set in xfconf needs to have the full

[Bug 1826688] [NEW] GNOME Shell has graphical issue in Applications menu

2019-04-27 Thread PJ O
Public bug reported:

After installing an update for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, GNOME's App Launcher
screen faces graphical issues when scrolling. To reproduce this, simply
open the Application menu and scroll in the paginated list. If the bug
is present, the screen will fail to update completly; the animation wil
play through, but the icons will remain in place or "chopped off," it
seems the frame isn't completly refreshed? It's fixed after a few
seconds or by moving the mouse.

I'm using GNOME 3.28.2 on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

I'm also using an Nvidia card for graphics (with drivers installed)

I attached a picture (Sorry that it isn't a screenshot!)

[Bug 1824688] Re: date+%-Y -d "- N years" errors when N > 111

2019-04-15 Thread O. Emmerson
I got a reply to my bug report on gnu.org which says:

"
From:
Paul Eggert
It works for me with coreutils 8.31 on RHEL 7 x86-64:

$ date +%-Y -d "- 2010 years"
9

Most likely you are running on a 32-bit machine, and dates in the year 9
cannot be represented in a 32-bit timestamp. So a simple fix would be
for you to switch to a 64-bit machine.
"

I am using 64bit Ubuntu though.

I have downloaded and compiled coreutils 8.31 to see if the command
worked for me in the upgraded version but the error remains the same.

[Bug 263505]

2019-04-02 Thread Mqudsi-o
I just learned that the Public Suffix List is actually a Mozilla
project!

Tangential remark: We know that Chrome isn't the most privacy-conscious
browser, but it's also a fact that the Chrome team takes security very
seriously and has put their money where their mouth is in that regard.
It's not sufficient to blindly follow their lead on all things, but it
is definitely a useful signal to consider and weighs in favor of
adopting the PSL approach.

An observation: currently for someone intending to search for
`browserconfig.xml` (with the separate search bar hidden), the process
of typing in `browserconfig.xml` in the address bar and quickly hitting
enter (yay muscle memory!) without considering that it is going to
NXDOMAIN, having to then go back to the search bar, type in
`browserconfig.xml` again and then go through the chore of identifying
which drop-down autocomplete entry should be used to invoke a search
rather than a navigation is considerably longer than the time it takes
to perform either a search or a DNS query in the background. The point
being, it's not a good idea to simultaneously perform both a DNS lookup
and initiate a search (for privacy reasons) and sequentially performing
these tasks one after the other in case of a failure of the first does
not result in a user unfriendly UX due to the delay/lack of
parallelization.

[Bug 1816045] [NEW] secureboot-db: release upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 modifies changelog.gz but resets mtime

This is going to be a wontfix, since it's a report from early KDE4
times. Nowadays it's well established that running GUI apps as root is
dangerous. Even more Dolphin, given that it comes with full shell access
thanks to the embedded Konsole part.

Anyone interested in editing root files with Dolphin, please subscribe

Thanks for pointing that out.
Since the new Thunderbird version deprecated XUL add-ins, this plugin proved a
good replacement for tray icon add-ins.
This is really significant feature from my point of view.
I think this should be mentioned on the project page.

[Bug 1308105]

2018-06-08 Thread Travis-o
Similarly I keep losing my configured resolution of 1280x720, with the
system defaulting back to 1920x1080 every time (which looks rubbish on
my crappy monitor).

Manually running "xfsettingsd --replace" is a workaround, but not ideal.
All progress though, it's still much better than rebooting every time.
Thanks a ton for getting us this far.

[Bug 1775383] [NEW] Left control key nonfunctional in normal use

2018-06-06 Thread John O
Public bug reported:

The Left Control key of my keyboard stopped working properly after the
upgrade to bionic.

This is definitely a software problem, as I've been able to get it
working by disabling and then re-enabling the 'Pointer location' switch
in the Gnome Tweak Tool.

The behaviour is that when the button is pressed, it does not act like I
would expect (for example, the Ctrl-Tab shortcut in web browsers stops
working, or ^C in a terminal window), but instead causes the window to
lose focus. (It's still on top, just not 'active')

I have no idea which package this should be filed against, and I've no
idea what the pathway is for keyboard-related bugs.

Some similar problems seem to have been reported on some ASUS laptops -
but I'm using a custom desktop PC and have never had issues before.

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic).

[Bug 1728244] Re: Touchpad stops working after reboot on Apollo Lake

The patched kernel results in trackpad fully working on my Yepo 737A.
Buttons, tracking, tapping for doubleclick and two-finger-gesture. Very
good research work, guys!

Did someone already talk to upstream/mainline for investigation and
further steps?

[Bug 1578317] Re: Regression: Mouse stuck at start-up

2017-11-26 Thread Shannon O
I clean installed Ubuntu 16.04 on a Dell Optiplex 390 and experience the same
lack of mouse function after successful login. I attempted the workaround
listed at the top of page but received the following error: "modprobe: ERROR:
could not insert 'usbhid': operation not permitted.
I then noticed my keyboard, which had previously worked normally, had stopped
working. I unplugged both my keyboard and my mouse and reconnected both in turn
and now my mouse and keyboard both work - even after log out and successful
login. I am not a Dev, just reporting what I've noticed and wondering when a
permanent fix will be available.
