[Bug 381457] Re: (Intrepid) Wifi stops working unpredictably, Intel 5300

2010-04-20 Thread Jorge O. Castro
All I get is this:

localhost kernel: [ 915.533109] iwlagn :03:00.0: MAC is in deep
sleep!. CSR_GP_CNTRL = 0x

over and over again in my syslog. Flipping the hardware switch does
nothing, nor does removing and reloading the module. I have a Thinkpad
X200 with Intel 5300.

This also affects me. With radeonhd driver, it works perfectly, I get

because radeonhd doesn't seem to switch on any kind of power saving (GPU
hit 95°C, then it decided to shut down.)

[Bug 556935] Re: fglrx not working

2010-04-10 Thread Dann O
I think this sounds like the same problem as I was seeing until my
playing this morning.

Previously my fglrxinfo would SIGSEGV like you are talking about. Along
with the segfault I would get errors about config files missing. I
tried the aticonfig --initial and it would also fail.

The output of my fglrxinfo is:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series
OpenGL version string: 3.2.9737 Compatibility Profile Context

Previously the fglrxinfo was complaining that no devices exist and that
the file /etc/ait/control was not found. I copied the /etc/ati/control
.dpkg-bak file to /etc/ati/control but that didn't fix the whole
problem.

I also did an sudo aticontrol --initial. Not sure if this is the right
thing but it basically put my display parameters into the
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.

After a reboot, my installation was running in a limited graphics mode
and the last error that I had was saying that my
/etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default was missing. I again coppied the
/etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default.dpkg-bak to /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default and then
everything appears to be working.

The only side effect right now is that I have a AMD Testing use only
graphic in the lower right corner of my screen. I would assume that will
go away once the final release of Lucid is out.

[Bug 544596] Re: Songs not transferred from music store to U1 storage

2010-04-09 Thread Jorge O. Castro
Hi Jeff,

I had this problem too where half an album downloaded and then a little
while later the other half finished up. The good news is the songs that
were stuck before managed to get downloaded.

I had a quick chat with Stuart on the phone and they've been sprinting
all week working on issues like this; the team is likely travelling home
today but I will ask one of them to update the status on Monday, thanks
for being patient!

[Bug 557056] [NEW] Support chromium app mode

2010-04-06 Thread Jorge O. Castro
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: webservice-office-zoho

Chromium has an option to launch in "application mode" that is great for
webapps since it removes the browser chrome and frames the web app
properly. You can try it by doing "chromium-browser
--app=http://zoho.com"; or whatever.

It would be great if webservice-office-zoho supported this in some
manner, since the result is pretty impressive (see attachment)

[Bug 538648] Re: Problem with X in Lucid on Lenovo T500

2010-04-01 Thread Jorge O. Castro
This appears to have gotten worse for me with today's updates and -18. I
used to only see it a few times a week but now it seems to be happening
a "few" times a day. Should we try the i915.powersave=0 thing?

Sorry for the anecdotal evidence but I have no idea how to troubleshoot
or reproduce this.

[Bug 521523] Re: severe ecryptfs corruption

2010-03-31 Thread Thomas O.
Anybody? I think this is fairly serious. I've decided to upgrade when
10.04 comes out, but I've already backed up stuff. Currently I'm
avoiding this bug by keeping at least 200 MB disk space free. If I run
out of disk space, then files get truncated, and then I have to repair
the damage.

[Bug 549719] [NEW] totem plays dvd without audio

2010-03-27 Thread Jon-o Addleman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Audio is working fine on this system for other files. Totem can play
mp3, ogg, avi files without trouble. Playing a dvd, however, the audio
does not play, and totem reports the audio codec as 'N/A'. If I just
navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD, and open the vob files in
totem, they play just fine, however. mplayer plays the dvd without any
trouble.

The audio configuration shows that the totem application is connected to
pulseaudio, though it doesn't appear to be actually sending any audio
data to it. Volumes are set to normal levels, just like when the volume
works.

[Bug 497984] Re: testdrive assumes that virtualbox will support a 64 bit guest.

2010-03-23 Thread O. Emmerson
I tried to test a 64bit image today (I am running 64bit Karmic) and got caught
out with this problem.
I go the message about kvm not being supported and installed virtualbox. The
64bit Desktop image was no.1 in the list of options and since I am running it I

[Bug 542659] Re: 2 different scrollbars in the light themes

2010-03-22 Thread Conn O Griofa
While the problem is related to "GtkRange::trough-under-steppers = 1" in
the theme gtkrc, let me clarify that this is a GTK widget style
property, and *not* a Murrine engine option [1].

XULRunner-based applications (such as Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.) seem
to ignore some (or all?) GTK widget style properties. Another property
that gets ignored is "GtkNotebook::tab-overlap". In my Dichotomy theme
[2] I have set the "GtkNotebook::tap-overlap" property to -1 which
should have the effect of spacing tabs 1 pixel apart. This works in all
applications except those that are XULRunner-based [3].

[Bug 228302] Re: [HARDY-LUCID] No DMA nor 32bits IO support

2010-03-20 Thread Conn O Griofa
Andy,

I noticed that you re-modularized the PATA/SATA drivers in kernel
2.6.32-17.26. Unfortunately, you forgot to re-modularize the ata_generic
module as well. I tried blacklisting the pata_ali driver and booting
with "all_generic_ide", but no hard drives or ATAPI drives were
detected, and I was booted to the initramfs shell. I suspect that the
boot option isn't parsed because the ata_generic module is still built-
in to the kernel.

... or perhaps the option has been renamed; I'll do some experimenting
and try to find out.

[Bug 380126] Re: [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use

2010-03-17 Thread Conn O Griofa
Jeremy,

Unfortunately I can no longer do any testing due to the fact that the
laptop in question became physically damaged.

However, the bug may be invalid; I remember that there was a change to
the default mouse configuration which disabled touch-to-click at the
time I filed this bug (a fact I became aware of later). This change to
the default configuration was later reverted, and the touchpad appeared
to function normally. I'm not sure if the configuration change was
coincidental (since the original log I posted shows no log activity for
the Synaptics driver), or if the generic mouse driver also supports tap-
to-click.

Mark, I have found if I restart the daemon as the system is still
loading from a boot it may not work. If I wait until everything in Gnome
is loaded and the drive light is off restarting udev usually works. Try
waiting a little longer if you are acting maybe to quickly too. If on
the chance it does not, restart the daemon a second time. This has
always worked for me.

[Bug 228302] Re: [HARDY-LUCID] No DMA nor 32bits IO support

2010-03-13 Thread Conn O Griofa
Igor,

Let's try to get a summary of action needed.

Problem: the "pata_ali" kernel driver does not support ATAPI DMA
transfers properly on certain ALI chipsets (even if force-enabled via
the driver option "atapi_dma=1"). The "ata_generic" kernel driver
supports ATAPI DMA transfers for such chipsets and has a special kernel
boot option, "all_generic_ide", which causes it to override the
manufacturer-specific drivers. However, this option does not work
correctly when the "ata_generic" and "pata_ali" drivers are compiled-in
to the kernel, which means that the "ata_generic" driver is impossible
to use.

Solution:

Change these kernel config parameters:
CONFIG_PATA_ALI=y
CONFIG_ATA_GENERIC=y

To the following:
CONFIG_PATA_ALI=m
CONFIG_ATA_GENERIC=m

Result:
1. For all other users: there will be no functional difference between the
original and modified kernel configuration (as long as the logic to
automatically modprobe the "ata_generic"/"pata_ali" kernel modules is properly
in place)
2. For users with buggy ALI chipsets, they can now take advantage of the kernel
boot options "all_generic_ide" and/or to manually blacklist the "pata_ali"
driver, which will cause the ata_generic driver to be used (and as a result,
ATAPI DMA will work properly).

Am I missing anything, Igor?

[Bug 525280] Re: Banshee needs a monochrome icon

2010-03-11 Thread Jorge O. Castro
I've asked upstream what they think of a monochrome icon, I wanted to
make sure we didn't lose the banshee identity in the process with a
generic icon.

As it turns out Banshee is using a monochrome SVG as a placeholder in
the grid view for when it can't find album art. I think this will end up
looking great when scaled properly and put in the panel. I'm assigning
this to Ken so he can hopefully find us an artist to finish this off for
Ambiance/Radiance.

[Bug 537193] [NEW] high disk I/O on resume if CPU% is high when suspend is initiated

2010-03-11 Thread Thomas O.
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

If I run a CPU heavy process on my computer (e.g. VirtualBox) just
before I suspend, then resume takes much longer than expected, and
during resume, disk I/O (on the HDD) is very high and the disk is
reading or writing some data. Approximately anywhere from 30 seconds to
5 minutes may elapse before the computer completely resumes; upon
hitting the lock screen dialog, disk I/O drops to almost zero.

Hardware:
  Dell Studio 1537
  Intel Core 2 Duo 2GHz
ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3450 GPU with fglrx drivers in use
3 GB RAM (plenty for Ubuntu), 2 GB swap (encrypted with ecryptfs)
  Ubuntu 9.10

[Bug 521523] Re: severe ecryptfs corruption

2010-03-10 Thread Thomas O.
I have one file which is corrupted, my VirtualBox config file.
VirtualBox reports an XML error, and from looking at the file, I see it
is truncated. This happened when my disk space was low. I am going to be
reformatting ASAP (in the weekend, I cannot afford to lose my laptop
during the week) but I will not be using ecryptfs again.

It seems that when ecryptfs experiences a low disk space condition,
files get truncated. So far only VirtualBox has been hit. That can be
repaired reasonably easily, by deleting the config and letting VB create
it again. But I worry that a more important file will be corrupted
eventually, so I have backed up all important stuff on to another, non-
ecryptfs HDD.

The files only get corrupted if they are in use at the time of the disk
space condition. Attached is the config file which was damaged, note
that it is truncated.

[Bug 533520] Re: Unreadable hint in Remote Desktop Preferences

2010-03-07 Thread Conn O Griofa
Kenneth,

Even if the application uses the correct @tooltip_fg_color, the
application may still look odd due to the new themes using such a dark
purple colour for the tooltip background. The author chose that colour
with the impression that tooltips always using a light background colour
(which is almost always the case, except for dark themes).

I'm attaching a patch against vino for consideration, that merely
removes the use of the "gtk-tooltip" type in the code (note that the
author specifically refers to it as a hack ;)).

Kalle, can you also work on updating this patch for .7 and working with
the Tracker guys upstream? I'd be nice for L+1 to just have the support
up there ootb.

[Bug 94940] Re: mdns listed in nsswitch.conf causes excessive time for dns lookups

2010-02-28 Thread Conn O Griofa
Has there been any progress on this issue? I experience slow DNS lookup
times on *all* my machines with Ubuntu (including Lucid), but not on any
version of Windows.

I can confirm that changing the "hosts" line in /etc/nsswitch.conf from:
files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4
to:
files mdns_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns

...completely resolves the slow DNS lookup times. I assume this
effectively enables IPv6 support for avahi-daemon, and taking into
consideration that my router and ISP uses IPv4 addressing, I assume that
this change will not break other legacy IPv4 setups either.

Can we get someone with experience of the avahi-daemon to comment on the
feasibility of this change?

If you remove the indicator area Rhythmbox will fallback to the old
method in the tray, is this not working for you? (Make sure indicator-
