[Bug 77202] Re: 'aptitude' shows many broken packages after fresh Edgy installation
No broken packages reported by 'aptitude' after a new install of Hardy i386 build 2008-01-06 (desktop, alternate, server). [Bug 105957] Re: nvidia-glx should add [Option UseEDID False] to [Section Device] in xorg.conf
Understandable. In this case it'd be good to have the default setting as it is right now, with EDID enabled, but also an alternate solution with this option disabled. Maybe like I suggested earlier, a modification to the xorg.conf file via a command or at least a clear message what to edit somewhere in tty. [Bug 79204] Re: boot on md raid drives fails
I can confirm this as well. I've tested Feisty daily images up to 20070411 and the same situation occurs. I'm not sure if the problem is with initramfs-tools or udev (or other package) but the bottom line is RAID/MD is broken. Hoping for a fix before Feisty final release. Still using Dapper here but can't wait to go through the big upgrade to have the latest and the greatest. -- boot on md raid drives fails https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/79204 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 105957] nvidia-glx should add [Option UseEDID False] to [Section Device] in xorg.conf
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nvidia-glx After enabling the nVIDIA binary driver and restarting the system (or just restarting X), X successfully starts but fails to set the correct refresh/frequency resulting in a blank screen and out of range display message. Recently tested in Feisty daily 20070411. This problem has been present since Dapper release. Also see bug #94671 (linux-restricted- modules-2.6.20). Fix: Add to xorg.conf in Section Device = Option UseEDID False = Example: --8-- Section Device Identifier NVIDIA Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6200] Driver nvidia BusID PCI:1:0:0 Option UseEDID False EndSection --8-- As per nVIDIA documentation [http://http.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/1.0-8774/README/appendix-d.html] --8-- Option UseEDID boolean By default, the NVIDIA X driver makes use of a display device's EDID, when available, during construction of its mode pool. The EDID is used as a source for possible modes, for valid frequency ranges, and for collecting data on the physical dimensions of the display device for computing the DPI (see Appendix Y, Dots Per Inch). However, if you wish to disable the driver's use of the EDID, you can set this option to False: Option UseEDID FALSE Note that, rather than globally disable all uses of the EDID, you can individually disable each particular use of the EDID; e.g., Option UseEDIDFreqs FALSE Option UseEDIDDpi FALSE Option ModeValidation NoEdidModes Default: True (use EDID). --8-- This option should be set by default when enabling the nVIDIA binary driver. ** Affects: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- nvidia-glx should add [Option UseEDID False] to [Section Device] in xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 105957] Re: nvidia-glx should add [Option UseEDID False] to [Section Device] in xorg.conf
Would setting this option by default cause more harm than good? I tested all HorizSync and VertRefresh and created custom ModeLines but nothing worked. Disabling UseEDID was the only solution. I know others experienced exactly the same problem. -- nvidia-glx should add [Option UseEDID False] to [Section Device] in xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/105957 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 105957] Re: nvidia-glx should add [Option UseEDID False] to [Section Device] in xorg.conf
How about creating an alternate package with xorg.conf including this option? Or a solution where xorg.conf would get modified in a similar fashion to 'nvidia-glx-config enable' (perhaps 'nvidia-glx-config fixfreq')? Keep in mind that once users affected by this issue switch from 'nv' to 'nvidia' driver, they loose their GUI. A console message informing about the alternate configuration would be very helpful. Otherwise users are left stranded and resort to using another working system to search the Internet for a fix.
[Bug 51421] Re: GTK applications leading Xorg to huge memory usage
I can confirm this bug as well. I'm unsure if the problem is actually related to 'gtk2-engines-gtk-qt' but it seems to originate from applications using GTK toolkit running in KDE. At times (apparently when changing color settings, etc. in 'kcontrol'), applications like 'Firefox' or 'streamtuner' freeze for well over 10 sec causing the 'Xorg' process to allocate more and more memory. Once GTK- based applications start responding, memory usage stops increasing. Closing the applications in question doesn't deallocate memory. Eventually, memory usage grows out of control, slows down the entire system and the only solution is to restart X. -- GTK applications leading Xorg to huge memory usage https://launchpad.net/bugs/51421 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 77205] Xorg display refresh rate settings inaccurate or too conservative
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg When going through many filed bugs (#77037, #63026, #61614, #47234, #42880) and forum posts I noticed that many users experience problems with display resolutions and refresh rates set in Xorg. Usually, simply increasing the H/V sync range fixes these issues. I myself tested this on a BenQ FP731 LCD. Xorg sets HorizSync=28-64, VertRefresh=43-60; while the actual values as per the display manual are 28-81/43-76. Perhaps Xorg sets these values in a too conservative way, based on the belief that it could damage old CRT monitors? How about implementing an option to extend the range of frequencies? ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Xorg display refresh rate settings inaccurate or too conservative https://launchpad.net/bugs/77205 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 77202] 'aptitude' shows many broken packages after fresh Edgy installation
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: debian-installer Tested by performing a new installation of Edgy: Desktop, Alternative, command-line system and Server. Actually, even the Live CD shows broken packages in 'aptitude'. If you run 'aptitude' immediately after booting into a newly installed system, it will report numerous broken packages. The number varies - sometimes it's only 4, sometimes 10, 14 or 33. This is probably due to 'aptitude' smart package handling when it tries to resolve all dependencies and install all suggested and recommended packages. Sorting through all this and examining each individual package in order to resolve all broken packages, although a one time deal, could be a bit painful for someone who prefers using 'aptitude' instead of one of the GUI package managers. It would be great if the default package selection was checked against 'aptitude' for each future Ubuntu releases. ** Affects: debian-installer (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- 'aptitude' shows many broken packages after fresh Edgy installation https://launchpad.net/bugs/77202 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 63625] Re: edgy - nvidia-glx install causes x to fail
I confirm this bug in nvidia-glx 1.0.8776+2.6.17.6-1 provided in Edgy final release. When using 'Add/Remove Applications' to install 'NVidia binary X.Org driver', the description suggests to enable the driver, run sudo nvidia-glx-config enable. ---8--- # sudo nvidia-glx-config enable Error: unable to load nvidia kernel driver! Be sure to have installed the nvidia driver for your running kernel. ---8--- Note that both 'linux-restricted-modules-common' and 'linux-restricted- modules-generic' are installed. After manually switching the driver from 'nv' to 'nvidia' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restarting X, my BenQ FP731 LCD shows Out of range and nothing comes up. What the video driver fails to display is the LCD's native 1280x1024. In Dapper I was able to do CTRL+Alt+KP_+/- and switch to other resolutions as a temporary workaround. I have 2 solutions to this problem, both involving modification of xorg.conf: 1. Force a specific refresh rate for the problematic resolution at given color depth (1280x1024_75). ---8--- Section Screen Identifier Default Screen Device NVIDIA Corporation NV43 [GeForce 6200] Monitor BenQ FP731 DefaultDepth24 SubSection Display Depth 24 Modes 1280x1024_75 1024x768 800x600 640x480 EndSubSection EndSection ---8--- 2. [Bug 51421] Re: GTK applications leading Xorg to huge memory usage
After some more testing, I can confirm that the memory leak actually occurs in 'gtk2-engines-gtk-qt'. In KDE, setting 'GTK styles and fonts' to use a specific style instead of Use my KDE style in GTK applications makes GTK apps run smoothly and without any freezes. After several hours the 'Xorg' process uses around 40MiB, as opposed to 200MiB+ (topped at close to 2GiB!) before. -- GTK applications leading Xorg to huge memory usage https://launchpad.net/bugs/51421 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
