[Bug 974938] Re: Process gsettings prevents logging in

2012-07-31 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi All,

I think this bug is a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/at-spi2-core/+bug/870874

I'm not sure and I will not mark it as such, but symptoms seems the
same: LDAP/NFS users, gsettings preventing session open with
blackscreen. Various workarounds seem to work with mitigated results
(installing nscd, removing /etc/X11/XSession.d/90qt-a11y…). For me,
disabling the XSession.d script worked the first time, then not the
subsequents. Did not try installing nscd yet, but caching LDAP results
is not an option, it will just hide/mask an underlying network problem
IMHO.

regards,
Olivier

Hi,

My Ubuntu 12.04 LTS servers seem to still send email with the wrong

unreadable. See this unattended-upgrade mail example:

[Bug 988583] Re: grub-mount hangs when update-grub is ran

2012-05-30 Thread Olivier Cortès
Same issue on a Macbook Air late 2010 (MacBookAir3,2). Killing grub-
mount lets ubiquity continue to install, else it's frozen like death.
Didn't try the binary from Jacques.

Note that I must kill grub-mount many times during the installation
process: before typing my personnal details, after taking a photo with
the webcam... I let a terminal open and launch sudo killall -9 grub-
mount everytime things seem to hang. It succeeded at least 3 times
(installation is still going on).

[Bug 950551] Re: No Mouse Cursor

2012-04-25 Thread Olivier Cortès
Just as a side note, the problem is known and still occuring with latest
parallels for mac and latest precise, as of today. It seems to affect
all recent distros with the new Xorg server.

We are waiting for a patch from Parallels, which seemed to exist in a
small period of time but is now inaccessible :-(

[Bug 969032] Re: Python os module lacks the chflags/lchflags methods

2012-04-05 Thread Olivier Cortès
Yes, I know `chattr` and I already use it on Linux. But referring to
http://docs.python.org/library/os.html#os.chflags the flags feature IS
the chattr on Linux (Availability: Unix, not just MacOS and FreeBSD).

Reading further http://bugs.python.org/issue1490190 , the flags/chattr
seems understood as different by upstream, but it is really the same
system call. Though it has not the same name, it does the same thing
(both flags and chattr have SF_IMMUTABLE, SF_APPEND, and more in
common).

Doing `os.chflags()` in python on Linux should make the `chattr`
equivalent syscall on Linux, if I understand the Python documentation
correctly. Only some flags values would be different (some missing and
some more than on other OSes).

It seems to be a good candidate for an upstream bug, though. I will
investigate a little more in this direction.

[Bug 969032] [NEW] Python os module lacks the chflags/lchflags methods

2012-03-30 Thread Olivier Cortès
Public bug reported:

Reading http://docs.python.org/library/os.html#os.stat , I noticed that
on Linux the flags or chattr features have a Python interface since
version 2.6.

However, on up-to-date Precise (Python 2.7.3rc2) and Oneiric (Python
Python 2.7.2+), the following commands :

import os
os.chflags

report AttributeError in a Python shell. Grepping in
/usr/lib/python2.7, the only reference to chflags is in the
`shutil.py` file which just checks if the python method is present or
not.

As the system interface is OK (I can successfully use chattr and
lsattr in the shell on both Ubuntu versions, and historically this
features has been present since I started using Linux), I think the
flags part of the Python distribution should be activated on Ubuntu.

Currently I need this feature in my Python application to see if some
files have the IMMUTABLE or APPEND flag, but generally speaking I can't
see any good reason why this feature is not active while beeing part of
the standard Python distribution.

[Bug 870297] Re: Lightdm logins not being logged in wtmp

2012-03-02 Thread Olivier Cortès
Here on up-to-date Oneiric.

I rely on this feature to display remote messages to the logged-in user.
On networked Ubuntu stations this is very important to my programs, else the
user won't know his workstation will shutdown !!
With this bug, my program sees no-one connected and no message can be
displayed. Very Sad.

Any workarounds on Oneiric to get the user connected to the graphical
session ? (besides re-installing GDM...)

I see the priority is low for Oneiric. Is it planned to be fixed or will
it be fixed only in Precise ?

The message says /var/lib/ldap: Permission denied but it is misleading
because :
1. the unix perms are openldap:openldap/755 on /var/lib/ldap
2. the apparmor profile usr.sbin/slapd includes /var/lib/ldap/ r,
/var/lib/ldap/** rwk which seems fine to me.

I used http://blogger.ziesemer.com/2010/05/openldap-ubuntu-linux.html
and http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html as
start for my LDAP configuration.

Here is my full run log :

sudo apt-get install slapd libnss-ldap libpam-ldap
[OK; debconf parameters: RootDN: cn=admin,dc=meta-it, dc=local, BaseDN:
dc=meta-it, dc=local, RootPW: metasecret, everything else defaults to what

sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/backend.module.ldif
  [OK]
sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/backend.hdb.ldif

SASL/EXTERNAL authentication started
SASL username: gidNumber=0+uidNumber=0,cn=peercred,cn=external,cn=auth
SASL SSF: 0
adding new entry olcDatabase=hdb,cn=config
ldap_add: Other (e.g., implementation specific) error (80)
additional info: olcDbIndex failed startup

[I get the syslog output pasted before]

service apparmor stop
sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/backend.hdb.ldif
  [OK]
service apparmor start

Then everything works as expected after this point.

I can prevent stopping completely apparmor by adding /var/lib/ r, to
the usr.sbin.slapd profile and reloading apparmor, then adding my
backend.hdb.ldif, then removing the profile line and reloading apparmor.

I don't understand why this is a problem, and why slapd needs this one time
/var/lib access.
Purging the package, rm -rf /var/lib/ldap and reinstalling leads to a 100%
reproductible problem.
disabling apparmor or adding the temporary line to the apparmor profile leads
to a 100% working workaround.

Feel free to contact me for further information if needed.

The message says /var/lib/ldap: Permission denied but it is misleading
because :
1. the unix perms are openldap:openldap/755 on /var/lib/ldap
2. the apparmor profile usr.sbin/slapd includes /var/lib/ldap/ r,
/var/lib/ldap/** rwk which seems fine to me.

I used http://blogger.ziesemer.com/2010/05/openldap-ubuntu-linux.html
and http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/serverguide/C/openldap-server.html as
start for my LDAP configuration.

Here is my full run log :

sudo apt-get install slapd libnss-ldap libpam-ldap
[OK; debconf parameters: RootDN: cn=admin,dc=meta-it, dc=local, BaseDN:
dc=meta-it, dc=local, RootPW: metasecret, everything else defaults to what
debconf asks]

  [OK]
sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/nis.ldif

  [OK]
sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/backend.hdb.ldif

SASL/EXTERNAL authentication started
SASL username: gidNumber=0+uidNumber=0,cn=peercred,cn=external,cn=auth
SASL SSF: 0
adding new entry olcDatabase=hdb,cn=config
ldap_add: Other (e.g., implementation specific) error (80)
additional info: olcDbIndex failed startup

[I get the syslog output pasted before]

service apparmor stop
sudo ldapadd -Y EXTERNAL -H ldapi:/// -f /etc/ldap/schema/backend.hdb.ldif
  [OK]
service apparmor start

Then everything works as expected after this point.

I can prevent stopping completely apparmor by adding /var/lib/ r, to
the usr.sbin.slapd profile and reloading apparmor, then adding my
backend.hdb.ldif, then removing the profile line and reloading apparmor.

I don't understand why this is a problem, and why slapd needs this one time
/var/lib access.
Purging the package, rm -rf /var/lib/ldap and reinstalling leads to a 100%
reproductible problem.
disabling apparmor or adding the temporary line to the apparmor profile leads
to a 100% working workaround.

Feel free to contact me for further information if needed.

[Bug 609767] [NEW] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 000000a0

2010-07-25 Thread Olivier Cortès
Public bug reported:

The boot was just terminated, and I was doing nothing particular when apport
noticed to me the kernel Oops.
Previous boot didn't finish properly and I needed to hard poweroff the machine
(caps lock not working, sysrq not working).
This is a maverick upgrade on stock lucid, on a Netbook Sony Vaio VPCW12M1E.

For now I don't know how to reproduce the problem, because I don't even
know what trigerred it. Everything seems to currently work fine on the
machine, I will look further to see if any hardware doesn't work and I
will report it here.

[Bug 267109] Re: a second gnome-power-manager gets launched as root, without reason

2009-07-01 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

I couldn't reproduce this bug on Jaunty, everything is fine.
It's a shame we have to wait for the next release for a fix, because it
introduces other bugs and the overall quality doesn't raise, but anyway this
bug can be closed.

regards,

Olivier

[Bug 138957] Re: (gutsy) lock screen doesn't support fingerprint readers driven by thinkfinger

2009-04-02 Thread Olivier Cortès
I should add a 4th thing to do :

4. give /dev/input/uinput the right permissions for gnome-screensaver to
work :

chmod g+w /dev/input/uinput

On my system, the udev rule didn't apply instantly, and I needed the
chmod, else G-S never showed or swipe finger prompt and swiping
didn't work.

Obviously a reboot makes 2. and 4. obsolete, but I didn't want to
reboot.

Running latest Jaunty on Thinkpad X300 with thinkfinger
0.3+r118-0ubuntu4 (debdiff against 0.3+r118-0ubuntu3 coming from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thinkfinger/+bug/311732) and
no other modifications.

Re,

Here is the log with the more dbg package I could find.

One important info : the crash only occur on some CDs, and only occur if
the destination directory doesn't exist before rip starts ; if I start
SJ over and rerip the CD which triggered the crash without deleting the
dest dir, the program ask me if I want to overwrite the files, then rips
and doesn't crash.

[Bug 205356] Re: compiz.real crashed with signal 7

2008-10-13 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

confirmed on latest Intrepid, AMD64 and Intel GMA X4500MHD (full HW info @
http://deep-ocean.net/files/sony/ ). This crash happens at EVERY login.
  * I run XFCE
  * with xfwm4 package uninstalled
  * and a symlink from /usr/bin/compiz to /usr/bin/xfwm
At login, session starts normally, then compiz crashes. If I open a terminal
and type compiz --replace, compiz is stable until next reboot : If I just
logout then login, compiz works flawlessly.
It could be because I've got an xrandr call in my session scripts, because of
bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xbacklight/+bug/176888

→ when my session is GNOME, compiz works flawlessly and never crashes.

[Bug 274278] Re: DRM Breaks Resume from Suspend

2008-10-11 Thread Olivier Cortès
It seems it hit the same bug (latest intrepid, Sony Vaio BZ11XN + Intel GMA
X4500MHD, HW info located @ http://deep-ocean.net/files/sony) :
 - when I suspend, everything seems fine ; the machine shuts down and the
yellow led starts blinking.
 - on resume, all kbd leds blink one time (kbd reset i presume), the LCD goes
on (only backlight), disk led blinks a little, LCD goes off then back on with X
cursor,
 - but the X cursor is stuck. caps lock doesn't work, sysrq doesn't work. only
solution is 4-seconds press on power off (no reset button on my vaio).

This has happened from Intrepid kernel 2.6.27-3. I followed
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend, did the suspend/resume
cycle with and without external usb devices pluged in, and only got
(every time) :

[4.723037] Magic number: 0:953:373
[4.723096] hash matches
/build/buildd/linux-2.6.27/drivers/base/power/main.c:390

No more hash matches when getting dmesg from a recovery boot just
after the power-off following the kernel freeze.

- I didn't test previous Intrepid 2.6.26 yet.
- I didn't test on hardy because this hardware is very recent and there isn't
video support in xorg for my card in hardy.
- i didn't test to put a touch in every pm-files, but as suggested by jason,
this will not help that much.

- i will test with drm kernel module blacklisted (next thing to do to confirm
this is the same exact bug).
- i will try to recompile a kernel with ACPI_DEBUG=y, but i haven't compiled a
kernel for years (thanks to ubuntu, i didn't touch xorg.conf for years too… ;-)
), this will take a little time.

Any more advice on how to nail down the problem ? I know without the
kernel oops this is kind of stunning difficulty, but i'd be happy to
provide this oops because suspend/resume is kind of important feature
for me.

[Bug 274278] Re: DRM Breaks Resume from Suspend

2008-10-11 Thread Olivier Cortès
The bug doesn't seem to be related to drm, at least on my machine :

- I switched to console, stopped gdm (and thus X) and unloaded drm kernel
module.
- echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace ; /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force
- machine suspended successfully
- on resume, hard drive led blincked a few times, but console screen never
appeared, caps lock didn't work, nor SysRQ…

this happens on -6 intrepid kernel, -7 is currently downloading. I will test
with it and post a new comment here.
I don't think recompiling a kernel will help me, as I can't get any output from
the kernel anyway when it crashes…

** Description changed:

- Kernel version 2.6.27-4, having the drm module loaded results in suspend
+ Kernel version 2.6.27-4, having the drm module loaded results in resume
(90% of the time) not returning from suspend. Going into Xorg.conf and
disabling acceleration is not enough on its own to prevent the hang, you
have to ensure the drm module itself is not loaded, even if it is not in
use. This bug can be confirmed for all versions of the Intrepid kernels
(my hardware only runs on intrepid) with the exception of the linux-rt
kernel, which suspends prefectly with DRM. The crash happens after X is
brought back up and tasks are being resumed. The mouse cursor is
displayed but cannot be moved, the machine is entirely non-responsive to
everything. This is not just hung video, the kernel is completely down.

No kernel oops is displayed. Log files only show a successful suspend
and then the eventual boot after the cold restart. Occasionally
(depending on how quickly tasks resume I guess) some of the post resume
scripts get to run. I added touch commands to each of them so I could
trace them and it gets through a semi-random number of them each time.
Occasionally it will even get through all of them before the hard lock.
The hard lock does not itself seem to be in pm-utils and its scripts,
but rather inside drm in some sort.

[Bug 274278] Re: DRM Breaks Resume from Suspend

2008-10-11 Thread Olivier Cortès
Some news after nearly 2h of tests…

 - latest 2.6.27-7 produces the same crash/freeze on resume (x cursor stuck, no
sysrq). Sometimes the unlock dialog can appear before the freeze (but only the
frame, not the input field, the photo, the user name…), sometimes only the X
cursor.
 - freeze happens on 100% of suspend/resume tries for me, when using any of
Intrepid's 2.6.27-* kernels (tried -3, -5, -6, -7)
 - trying the 2.6.26-rt from universe, the suspend resume cycle works
perfectly, modulo the following workaround-able problem :
   - first suspend/resume brought me to a strange situation : the computer
resumed correctly, but screensaver corrupted the screen (moving the mouse makes
screen flicker, doesn't stop screensaver, doesn't bring unlock dialog).
   - pressing control-alt-f1 to get to console gets me to a black screen
(backlight is on, but nothing displayed, not event a cursor). I can [blindly]
enter my username and my password, then killall gnome- screensaver (with the
space). returning to X shows the cursor still making the screen blink/flicker
(seems normal).
  - logging in from SSH and killing gnome-screensaver makes the X screen come
back to normal, and computer is fully usable (at least visually : external USB
mouse ok, network manager wired OK, wifi OK, webcam ok with Cheese,
gnome-power-manager OK, compiz OK…).
  - I disable screensaver (uncheck activate screensaver when idle), try
another suspend/resume cycle.
  - on resume, I get a black screen, but my caps lock works and X seems OK
(because I inverted control and caps lock, and the control-key puts the caps
led on and off)
  - going to console strangely gets me a working console (in which i logged in
a few minutes ago to kill gnome- screensaver and notice my previous typo).
  - pressing control-alt-f7 brings me back to X, fully working.
  - suspending/resuming again (i really enjoy this functionnality when it
works…) works flawlessly.

So, my conclusions :
 - suspend/resume totally crashes my kernel with any of the 2.6.27-* Intrepid
kernels.
 - suspend/resume works correctly with 2.6.26-rt from Intrepid's universe, and
I sometimes hit another bug related to Intel GMA/video BIOS/fb problem, which
forces me, on resume, to go back to console and back to X, to get X displayed
on screen.

I know there are some X/Intel/uvesafb problems already reported, i'm
subscribed to most, but I can't seem to find which one is the one I
encounter ; hope they will all be resolved before release).

Now, I will stick to 2.6.26-rt kernel, because suspend/resume works perfectly,
and all my devices seem ok. I know this is a bad decision because 2.6.26 is not
in main, not the official intrepid kernel… But my kernel/debbuging skills are
not enough to find what's wrong in the resume cycle of the 2.6.27.
I will be happy to help if someone can guide me. I can even provide an ssh
access to a kernel hacker if needed.

By the way, I can't confirm with 100% of certainty that my bug is the
same as Jason's. But it seems. Any other point of view on this issue ?

regards,
Olivier

[Bug 267109] Re: a second gnome-power-manager gets launched as root, without reason

2008-10-11 Thread Olivier Cortès
I should add that this root-gpm can appear at any time, even when my gpm
has not crashed at all. I notice this second daemon coming in because my
backlight suddently starts to increase until 100%.

When I kill the root-daemon, my back light does not come back to my gpm
settings (currently 35%).

I attach the script that I must launch at every session start, to
prevent the root gpm to appear.

This behaviour exists under GNOME, and under XFCE (i recently switched
to xfce, my gnome session taking nearly one minute to completely start…)

[Bug 269083] Re: gnome-power-manager crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2008-10-11 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi I seem to hit this bug too.

When gpm crashes (my battery was discharging), I can relaunch it with
gnome-power-manager --verbose --no-daemon, after having plugged AC in,
and it seems stable (it hasn't recrashed since manual launch). At
relaunch, it shows 11% battery.

just after having launched it manually, I encountered my bug

manager/+bug/267109 . I killed the uid-0 daemon, and everything went
fine since. I attach the complete gpm log since I launched it manually,
in case someone can see something interesting in it.

[Bug 251665] Re: Fn keys on VAIO don't produce keystrokes nor ACPI events

2008-10-07 Thread Olivier Cortès
Yes, I'm aware about #176888, but it's not the same.
after having run the xrandr thing (i've got it in my gnome session startup…),

But the sound Fn Keys work.

[Bug 173652] Re: Unable to adjust screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks, Intel GMA adapter

2008-10-06 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

on latest intrepid and vaio BZ11XN (X4500MHD) :
 - sudo /etc/acpi/sonybright.sh {up|down} works, but only after xrandr …
CONTROL=native
 - xbacklight works, with xrandr previously called too (but not without)
 - Fn-keys produce nothing for LCD (but work for sound), and I attached my acpi
debug info to bug

it was missed because the bug is fixed for original poster and not for me,

before (when I was using WPA), NM has remembered my WPA key without a problem,
and with seahorse I can see my old WPA key sitting in my gnome-keyring… But I

[Bug 272536] Re: Problems with mouse

2008-09-21 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

Here on a Sony Vaio BZ11XN (HW info @ http://deep-ocean.net/files/sony/) with a
volito2 tablet, on latest Ubuntu intrepid: when I click with the stylus, the
click action comes (button, menu, etc), but the cursor gets stuck (doesn't move
any more).
I must move the pen far away from the tablet and back to get the X cursor
moving again.

If I use the touchpad (or an external USB logitech mouse) during the
cursor freeze, I can notice that the cursor moves again (wathever the
stylus does), and it selects some text : it seems that the tablet didn't
notice the stylus button release.

[Bug 205990] Re: [hardy] splash screen disappears after a few seconds

2008-09-21 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

I confirm that this bug can occur on latest Intrepid.
I resized my swap, and obviously it changed its UUID. I didn't think I had to
update anything more than fstab…
But I came across the same problem as in this bug : usplash quits just before
“reading files needed to boot” message appears on text console.
Using the suggested workaround/fix (blkid → fstab/resume files → rebuild
initramfs → reboot) works great and totally solves my problem. USPLASH IS BACK
! YAY !!

But it seems usplash is not hardened on latest intrepid than on hardy,
regarding to this swap UUID problem.

I think that /etc/…/resume should be kept empty (or non-existent) if
there is only one swap device referenced in fstab, and the one from
fstab should be taken if “resume” file is empty or non-existent.

… when redondant/duplicate configuration data leads to problems…

[Bug 254359] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in FcConfigSubstituteWithPat()

2008-09-19 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,
up-to-date Intrepid here.
encountered a crash named the same by apport.

I was using Impress on a 50+ pages presentation, few minutes ago.
I updated the system and fontconfig (2.6.0-1ubuntu4) intrepid; urgency=low was
in the upgrade.
during the upgrade process, OOImpress crashed, and said that the document was
backed up.
When I restarted OOo, it tryed to restore the document, acheived it, but when
the Impress window appeared, it crashed again.
On next launch, it asked me to recover the first file, and a second,
identically named. I clicked recover, 2 Impress windows lauched, became
immediately unresponsible, and OO crashed.
then apport showed up. I don't know which crash it was about…

If I mannualy open the file I found in ~/.openoffice.org2/user/backup/
(after having moved it to my home dir), i recover the last version of
the document I was working on, before the first crash, and OOo don't
crash any more.

Sorry for the bad english, i'm late this morning, no more time for bug
hunting…

[Bug 267047] Re: cpufreq applet doesn't draw anything (white square) in gnome-panel

2008-09-16 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

here is my .xsession-errors when the applet is white. Sadly, I crawled

approximately 15 times I opened my GNOME session (a little more than
once a day).

I'm sorry I do not know exactely how to reproduce the conditions of this bug.

[Bug 267047] [NEW] cpufreq applet doesn't draw anything (white square) in gnome-panel

2008-09-06 Thread Olivier Cortès
Public bug reported:

Hi,
When my session opens, sometimes cpufreq-applet doens't draw itself on the
panel (see attachment).
Left/Right button click and changing preferences (which work perfectly per se)
doesn't help : at best the white square gets bigger if I choose to display
graphic and text instead of just graphic.
Removing the applet and adding an identically configured new one to the panel
is a workaround, but not acceptable for a standard user I think.
On my machine this bug appears 50% of time (this is a rough estimation).

Hardware info can be found at http://deep-ocean.net/files/sony/
I'm on up-to-date intrepid, and this behaviour as been seen from alpha 4, when
I joined the lucky-alpha-debuggers because my video card was not supported
under hardy ;-)

My WM is compiz. If I switch to metacity (System→Preferences→Appearance → No
effects), the white square turns into a transparent one : applet is stills here
(i can click, change governor, etc), but invisible.
If I switch back to compiz, the applet stays transparent.

[Bug 267109] [NEW] a second gnome-power-manager gets launched as root, without reason

2008-09-06 Thread Olivier Cortès
Public bug reported:

Hi,
after having applyed a 2 lines patch to resolve bug LP#260314
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/260314/comments/8),
my GPM works normally. But sometimes, without any reason or manual
intervention from me, another daemon is started, as root.

I can see this because a second g-p-m notification icon appears in the
systray, and my backlight is resetted to 100% (I've configured it to 40%
in my GPM preferences). If I sudo kill the root gpm, my session does not
seem to be affected (nothing crashes, nothing changes). Some times later
(say, 10 to 30 minutes), another daemons starts again as root, and same
player shoots again (sudo kill).

2008-09-06 Thread Olivier Cortès
** Description changed:

  Hi,
after having applyed a 2 lines patch to resolve bug LP#260314

+
+ I'm on up-to-date Intrepid. Hardware info @ http://deep-
+ ocean.net/files/sony/

[Bug 258584] Re: [82G33/G31] Changing screen resolution results in a black screen

2008-09-02 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

I encounter this bug too, on a Sony Vaio BZ11XN (Intel GMA X4500MDH).
more info (lspci, dmesg, uname, xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log*) @
http://deep-ocean.net/files/sony/

To work around the problem, I had to delete
~/.gconf/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/xrandr/ and reboot the machine from
SSH. Impossible to get a working screen, even with restarting GDM or
killing X manually. No return to VTs possible after the black screen.

For now, i've forgotten to use an external monitor. The only thing that
works is Clone mode : without touching the configuration, X seems to be
in clone mode ; un-setting “mirror screens” to this setup with gnome
resolution app and setting a different resolution on external monitor
(1280x1024) does nothing, and any other changes (rotating screen)
results in a ssh-reboot-needed-black-screen.

If you can't debug this problem with Traumflug, i will help. If you can, I'll
be happy to stay on other bugs ;-)
Regards,

[Bug 263199] [NEW] when closing a tab, epiphany pops-up an empty window

2008-08-31 Thread Olivier Cortès
Public bug reported:

Hardware info @ http://deep-ocean.net/files/sony/ if needed.
Up-to-date Intrepid, as of 2008-08-31. ephy version 2.22.3-1ubuntu2,
ephy-extensions version 2.22.2-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 (why the hardy version ?? on
intrepid ??).
Navigation is normal, until I open a website which contains flash in a new tab,
like canon.fr.
I answer 'cancel' to the modal dialog which want me to download the plugin…
(how to just ignore that ?? ok I know, this is a separate issue…)
Even If I do nothing on this site, and just close the tab, various sized empty
windows appear on the screen.
Sometimes only one, sometimes two at once (see attachment).
If I close one of these windows, 2 things can happen :
  - epiphany window totally closes. If I start it again, it ask if I want to
restore the session, I say yes.
  - all pop-up windows close in the same time, and i can continue using ephy.
Statistically, i've encountered more crashes after closing popups.

If i visit a non-flash site (say, http://linuxfr.org or
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-linux-kvm/?ca=dgr-
lnxw07LinuxKVM ; (tested)), no pop-up appears.

[Bug 260910] Re: gnome-session-properties alerts the startup command cannot be empty whenever I try adding an autostart program

2008-08-31 Thread Olivier Cortès
A temporary workaround is to go manually to ~/.config/autostart/ , copy
any of the .desktop file to a new file, and edit it, to fit your needs.
Example, to launch pidgin (put this content into
~/.config/autostart/pidgin.desktop) :

[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Version=1.0
Name=Pidgin
Name[fr_FR]=Pidgin

[Bug 173652] Re: unable to adjust screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks

2008-08-30 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

Here still on Vaio BZ11XN (Intel X4500MHD).
The 2.6.27-2 kernel does NOT fix the problem. (My Intrepid is up-to-date)

Only rc.local/xrandr + xbacklight can workaround the problem ;

BUT : 2 times out of 3, the rc.local call to xrandr seems to make some
kind of race condition with gdm startup, and X do not start completely :
gdm starts, the screen blinks 2 or 3 times, then remains black (with
backlight on) ; no response from anything (CAPS led is unresponsive, nor
SysRq-reboot). Pulling the xrandr call from rc.local and calling it in a
terminal *after* GNOME session has opened is OK and makes xbacklight
work everytime.

[Bug 197929] Re: Backlight adjustment no longer works on Thinkpad X61s

2008-08-30 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

Coming from #176888 which has been marked duplicate of current issue :

Hardware : sony Vaio BZ11XN (Intel GMA X4500MHD).
I confirm, on latest Intrepid (as of 2008-08-30), that the xrandr manual-call
is *needed* to be able to use xbacklight.

My Fn-keys are not working but this is another problem (#251665).

As I stated in #173652 : 2 times out of 3, the rc.local call to xrandr
seems to make some kind of race condition with gdm startup ; X do not
start completely and the machine hard-locks : gdm starts, the screen
blinks 2 or 3 times, then remains black (with backlight on) ; no
response from anything (CAPS led is unresponsive, nor SysRq-reboot).
Pulling the xrandr call out of rc.local and calling it in a terminal
*after* GNOME session has opened is OK and makes xbacklight work
everytime. (should I fill another bug with this ?)

[Bug 132720] Re: qemulator crashes a few seconds after launch

this bug happens when qemulator can't find any of the configured images.

BTW, perhaps should it just ask the user if he/she wants to remove the

[Bug 245888] Re: Intrepid, on latest updates (mesa updates - 7.1~rc1-0ubuntu1), compiz no longer works and gives white screen on login

2008-08-29 Thread Olivier Cortès
Here on up-to-date Intrepid, Intel X4500MHD (on a Sony Vaio BZ11XN), everything
works fine again.
Yesterday I encountered the bug and compiz stopped working, launched metacity
automatically.
Everytime I wanted to run compiz, it complained :

/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

Searching through launchpad I came across the present page.
I disabled metacity compositor and compiz is back and working fine.

[Bug 258994] Re: Intel GM45 integrated chipset graphics X4500 driver

2008-08-28 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

Here on a Sony Vaio BZ11XN (Intel GMA X4500MHD), I encountered the same problem
:
  * Intrepid Alpha 4 worked out of the box (X.org OK from Live CD, install ok,
reboot ok)
  * Then I dist-upgraded, and rebooted
  * And then black screen (but backlight is on) ; X seems running and gnome
too, because CAPS lock gets on/off correctly.
  * I rebooted with Ctrl-Alt-F1 Ctrl-Alt-Suppr, removed splash from the kernel
entry,
  * then I encountered #189621,
  * but X came back normal.
  * i definitely removed splash from /boot/grub/menu.lst, ran sudo
update-grub and sudo apt-get install v86d and now I've got my X and GNOME
(note that without v86d, X is ok too ; #189621 seems harmless).

Hi,

here on a Sony Vaio BZ11XN (Intel X4500MHD), the back light doesn't work
(it is @100% at boot, and Fn-F5/F6 do not work). After having followed
#258994 (which I encountered too), i came here.

The rc.local/xrandr + manual xbacklight trick works. I didn't try to alter the
/etc/acpi/ script yet, but I will.
On my up-to-date intrepid, the

xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native

times), but at ~90% of resumes I get a completely white screen. I can
type my password (sometimes I must click anywhere in the screen to grab
focus) and the screen unlocks as expected.

[Bug 149834] Re: [gutsy] update broke detection of hda intel soundcard

2007-10-06 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi. This is highly related to #131133. For me, last update did not solve
the #131133 problem. Currently boot process is very slow, because of :

[ 23.498634] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode...
[ 24.502109] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to single_cmd
mode...
[ 28.059489] hda_codec: No auto-config is available, default to model=ref
 [this takes ages...]
[ 35.185861] hda-intel: no codecs initialized
[ 35.186913] ACPI: PCI interrupt for device :00:1b.0 disabled

After the boot, Alsa reports no soundcard found.

Hi. Last kernel/alsa-source update (2007-10-05 night) didn't solve the

Recompiling alsa module (with module-assistant), having replaced alsa-

again, and boot process much quicker (see my comment on #149834).

[Bug 45696] Re: NetworkManager can't find interface on resume from suspend

2007-10-04 Thread Olivier Cortès
Hi,

just to confirm that disabling networking in NM-applet before suspend,
and re-enabling it after resume does perfectly the job and completely
solves the problem for me (tested 3 times), wired or not. Still annoying
to have to do this, and other machines (thinking of my old IBM T40p)
worked without this. Isn't there a way (a /etc/power or /etc/acpi
script) to do this automatically on suspend/resume ?

[Bug 146191] Re: iwl4965 does not work after resume

2007-09-28 Thread Olivier Cortès
Here on a Dell Precision M4300, iwl4965 works after a suspend/resume cycle.
dmesg says nothing particular about the card, but network-manager says no
network adapter detected (it does not even detect the wired ethernet device,
but that's another bug, i will search/report elsewhere).
iwconfig shows the iwl4965, and manually associating the card with my AP
works (with iwconfig wlan0 essid ... enc s:...). Anyway if you need more
testing for positive or negative results about this bug, I subscribe to it.
regards,
