Same behaviour (on natty 11.04) for me on my ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard. Using safe remove remounts the usb key a few seconds after the action. I think that there is a little problem with Nvidia's USB chipsets. After some source code & hardware investigation, it works ! I just changed the shared video memory window from 16Mb to 32Mb. Tested with nomodeset boot option. Doesn't work ! I tried to blacklist the "nouveau" driver, but no luck :-( It seems that the "nouveau" driver with the new kernel introduced multiple regressions for many nvidia users (verified with some friends). Same problem for me. When compiz is running on a i945 based motherboard, the X server freeze short after logging.
