[Bug 739068] Re: Cycling through app windows and apps themselves need improvement

2011-05-01 Thread Patrick Rynhart
Ctrl-TAB has been suggested above - however, this is already used to
cycle through tabs of a particular window of an open application. For
an application (which, in general, will have multiple tabs per window)
wouldn't a new keyboard shortcut be required ?

I agree that there is a usability issue at present regarding this, as it
seems that only effective way to switch is via expo at present (which
can be tedious).

[Bug 579709] Re: No window decorations on login in Lucid

2010-08-10 Thread Patrick Rynhart
A possible workaround for this issue (as recommended by a Lucid user in
#compiz) was to use fusion-icon to launch compiz. To achieve this, if
fusion icon is not already installed, start Ubuntu Software Center and
install the package "Compiz Fusion Icon". Then, in GNOME, System ->
Preferences -> Appearance, click the "Visual Effects" tab and select
"None". Then System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications and add a
new Startup Program with Name "Compiz Fusion" (or similar) and with
command line /usr/bin/fusion-icon. Log out and in again.

I have been trialling this configuration for a while and haven't seen
the issue reoccur. My compiz args are now (as the result of a "ps aux |
grep compiz"): "compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints
ccp"

@Gabe: Actually I had no args regardless of whether the decorations were
loaded or not. Not sure why exactly (and Lucid is a clean install on my
box).

[Bug 613270] [NEW] Issues with Helper Applications and Square braces in Attachment(s)

2010-08-03 Thread Patrick Rynhart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

If I receive an email containing square braces in an attachment (e.g.
"foo[1].pdf") then the following message will occur in Thunderbird:

/tmp/foo[1].pdf could not be opened, because the associated helper
application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

The problem does not occur with files that do not contain square braces.

Thanks,

Patrick

[Bug 579709] Re: No window decorations on login in Lucid

2010-08-03 Thread Patrick Rynhart
Can people who are affected by this bug please try a "ps aux |grep
compiz" and advise whether compiz (on affected systems) has any
arguments ? On my box, compiz didn't have any args - after discussion
with others in #compiz, I was advised that compiz should have args
similiar to "compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp"

Thanks,

Patrick

[Bug 433817] Re: Gnome hang when dragging starters to docky

2010-08-02 Thread Patrick Rynhart
I have experienced this Issue with Lucid. I'm only able to drag one
item to the dock before then needing to exit Gnome-Do - otherwise
dragging a second item will cause this lockup of the GNOME desktop.

[Bug 579709] Re: No window decorations on login in Lucid

2010-07-10 Thread Patrick Rynhart
@Juan: One workaround that I use is to install the compiz-fusion icon
package. This places an icon in the top right panel - one of the
options is "Reload Window Manager" which you can use when this problem
occurs (to avoid needing to logout/reboot etc).

2010-06-15 Thread Patrick Rynhart
I agree - there is a usability issue here. After clicking on a group of
applications there is no way to close a particular instance - only
select (or switch) to an existing instance. However, I think that this
issue needs to be filed upstream, i.e. with the Gnome people (see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME).

@Yann - Do you have an nVidia based graphics card (and, if so, what

I can confirm Yann's observation as this issue occurring approximately 1

can right click, "Reload Window Manager" (which I presume is equivalent
to "gtk-window-decorator --replace" as detailed by the bug reporter).

[Bug 584079] Re: Adobe Reader Dutch version not uninstalling

2010-06-09 Thread Patrick Rynhart
This is secondary but the name of this package in the Ubuntu Software
Center should be changed from "Adobe Reader" to "Adobe Reader 9 (Dutch
Version)". Aside from the name of the package being "adobereader-deu",
there is no indication that the package is not English (even in the
"more info" section). I suspect that this is the reason why people are
installing this by mistake.

Screenshot attached.

[Bug 591498] [NEW] gnome-screenshot appears to free image copied to clipboard if cancel subsequently clicked

2010-06-08 Thread Patrick Rynhart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Steps to reproduce this issue in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

1. Start gnome-screenshot
2. Click "Copy to Clipboard"
3. Click "Cancel" to dismiss the dialog.
4. Start OpenOffice Writer (as an example of another app to paste the image on
the clipboard). Within this application, attempt to paste the image in (Edit
-> Paste).
5. The Application will segfault (i.e. tail /var/log/messages)

Jun 9 10:11:14 IT040035 kernel: [ 906.571706] soffice.bin[1888]:
segfault at 2ae05e9 ip 02ae05e9 sp b356c1a0 error 4 in
libsvxli.so[2b82000+31a000]

Notes

A. If the steps are repeated without Step 3 then the fault does not occur.
B. It should be possible to dismiss the gnome-screenshot dialog after an image
is copied to the clipboard. There doesn't appear to be any other way to do so
without clicking "Cancel" (the only other options are Save and Help). I would
therefore argue that "Copy to Clipboard" followed by "Cancel" is a legitimate
use.

(Suggestion: Why not change "Cancel" to "Close" after "Copy to
Clipboard" is used - this would be more intuitive.) At the very least,
the image should not be freed on the clipboard (which is what I suspect
is happening here).

C. I suspect that this should be forwarded upstream - if someone on the
Ubuntu team could first please check and confirm this issue then I would
be happy to do so.

[Bug 587856] Re: GNOME Drag & Drop broken in Lucid

2010-05-31 Thread Patrick Rynhart
Notes:

1. This issue appears to apply only to remote X11 sessions, i.e. non-console
X11 sessions such as xrdp & tightvnc.
2. This is not specificially a tightvnc session (but was first observed as
affecting remote VNC sessions only).
3. Drag & Drop is broken through the GNOME desktop session, e.g. (i) mail
messages in Thunderbird cannot be dragged from one folder to another, (ii) The
location of folders & files on the desktop cannot be moved either (they return
to their starting place).

[Bug 587856] Re: GNOME Drag & Drop broken in Lucid

2010-05-31 Thread Patrick Rynhart
Reassigning from tightvnc to gtk+2.0 due to additional information that
has been obtained.

Have investigated this issue using a divide & conquer approach within a
VM (i.e. clean install - applying all updates then rolling back and
applying half of the updates etc).

I have managed to isolate this issue to "libgtk2.0-0" and
"libgtk2.0-bin" binary packages. Will attach my apt-get update log
(which includes the DEB packages and versions concerned).

[Bug 177085] Multiple VNC server sessions and GNOME applets

2007-12-17 Thread Patrick Rynhart
Public bug reported:

I'm using the vnc4server package on Ubuntu 7.10.

When a user runs multiple VNC server sessions (each running a GNOME
desktop session) then killing one of the VNC sessions causes the GNOME
applets in the others to crash.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Modify ~/.vnc/xstartup to

#!/bin/sh
gnome-session &

2) Start multiple VNC instances as a single user
(e.g. vncserver :1, vncserver :2, vncserver :3)

3) Wait for all desktops to load

4) Kill one of the sessions, e.g. vncserver -kill :1

5) The gnome applets in the remaining VNC server sessions (:2 and :3)
will fail, i.e:

Trash has quit unexpectedly
Volume control has quit unexpectedly
Deskbar has quit unexpectedly
