[Bug 1015791] Re: cannot configure machine to suspend below a battery threshold

2012-06-26 Thread Patrick Santos
To OP - what you describe is gnome-power-manager. I am setting this
issue to confirmed as I see the issue too - on a machine that is capable
of performing a suspend, the option is not available to automatically
suspend on critical battery, at least via gnome-power-manager's GUI.

[Bug 1016559] Re: nautilus-dropbox installation hangs while downloading

2012-06-24 Thread Patrick Santos
Hello Evan, I solved the problem you have by doing the following:

1. Run, as you did before:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
2. Press CONTROL+C to before the download of Dropbox tries to do anything.
3. Remove dropbox:
sudo apt-get purge nautilus-dropbox

That should allow you to install other packages again. (I installed
another package in Software Centre properly after doing the above.)

Note I have Bug #992485 as a duplicate to this one, although the

that it may even be practical to move the size all the way down to
16x16, the smallest size of most icons.)

[Bug 1015791] Re: cannot configure machine to suspend below a battery threshold

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

May you confirm that the power configuration window you are referring to
is gnome-power-manager, part of the Gnome control center? (That is the
default for Gnome Shell and Unity Desktop.)

If so, I can confirm the issue because I notice I only have the option
of Hibernate and Power Off for critical battery levels.

[Bug 1012375] Re: Lexmark printer firmware upgrade

2012-06-13 Thread Patrick Santos
The problem is certainly valid but it is requesting too large a change
to be considered a feature request, and it is not a bug (i.e. there is
no programmer error that is preventing the firmware upgrade). See:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage#Feature_Requests

I cannot find any existing package in Ubuntu that can take on this
functionality (i.e. CUPS does not do this and I can't find any dedicated
tools, at least in core Ubuntu packages). That's why I suggested going
to the Brainstorm portion since we'll need help from design as well as
the non-programmers that prowl that section to come up with a design for
Ubuntu software, or more likely, to come up a with a nice organized
effort to pressure Lexmark to give a toolbox for Linux the same way HP
does with hplip.

As to your reference to bug 1, for sure the issue of closed firmware is
a contributing factor. I used to own a Lexmark X9575 that is a brick
under any Linux distro - that and the way its ink started getting
expensive caused me to get a new printer. The second thing I checked for
the new printer (HP Officejet Pro 8500A) was Linux support, after
checking how much the ink cost.

2012-06-06 Thread Patrick Santos
Hi Matthias, Thank you for your reply.

Note that bug reports are about single problems that you wish developers to fix
- more than one issue means more than one report.
If you are experiencing a lot of problems with your computer bieng slow (i.e
not just Firefox) and want some more ideas to troubleshoot, I suggest you try
asking around on the QA section: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu

To help us fix the Firefox issue, again, we need to know which web pages
cause your computer to slow down and whether you have the same issue
when using browsers other than firefox. See

[Bug 1007621] Re: open file dialog in glchess is shrinked, unusable

2012-06-02 Thread Patrick Santos
Confirmed - simply click on the Chess game window and click Ctrl+O. I
suggest importance HIGH as it essentially renders the load function
useless.

Result: The Load chess game dialog is that the fields in the dialog window
take up a very small portion vertically on the screen, making it almost
impossible to select something.
Expected result: The dialog should be scaled correctly.

[Bug 1006843] Re: ubuntu 12.04 freezes and othertimes get very slow when wathing on youtube to the point that i need to reeboot the computer

2012-06-02 Thread Patrick Santos
May you give an example of a web page that triggers the issue? (e.g. if it's a
video, link to the specific video if possible)
Also, have you tried another browser such as Chromium or Epiphany?

From the following lines it looks like it's a media plugin that's taking
up all your CPU which is causing the stuttering issues you are seeing.

 3095 matti 20 0 351m 90m 21m R 130 4.5 8:10.74 plugin-containe
 1766 matti 9 -11 161m 5784 4192 S 17 0.3 0:45.08 pulseaudio
 1875 matti 20 0 619m 213m 33m S 17 10.6 11:09.95 firefox

As a potential workaround for Youtube (as I suspect the Flash Player),
you may want to try to enable HTML5 (rather than Flash):

[Bug 1007462] Re: Sound unmuted when headphones are unplugged

2012-06-02 Thread Patrick Santos
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command (preferably right
after you unplugged the headphones), as it will automatically gather
debugging information, in a terminal:

  apport-collect 1007462

Also, if you can describe the following, it would also help:
1. Are you headphones attached with the round 3.5mm plug (like normal
headphones), or using a USB card/port (like some gaming headsets)?
2. Where the speakers muted before you plugged in the headphones?
3. How did you mute the headphones? (A button on the laptop? In Banshee? In
Sound Settings?)

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

-

I tried several variations of muting and then unplugging headphones, and
this is the only way I got the music to play through the speakers:

Note I don't have your type of laptop, so I made do with the following setup
setup:
Speakers attached to Intel DP67DE motherboard (Realtek audio, analog port out)
Headphones attached to Asus Xonar U3 USB sound card.

1. Open Banshee Music Player.
2. Begin playback of music. (I used Daniel Juaraz's Celeste from Jamendo)
3. Make sure volume of speakers is NOT muted.
3a. If speakers are not playing music, select the output device of the Speakers
in Sound Settings if needed, to get the speakers to play music.
4. Plug in headphone.
4a. Do step 3a for the headphones.
5. In Banshee, set the volume to 0.
6. Unplug the headphones. (In my case, I unplugged the USB sound card.)

Expected result: Mute should have been maintained when swtiching from headphone
to speakers.
Actual result: The old volume of the speakers is used, so sound ends up playing
again.

Note if I try to mute using any of the Unity Desktop controls (Sound Settings
or the sound icon on the panel next to the clock) the speakers actually stay
muted.

[Bug 771771] Re: dm-crypt shell fallback

2012-05-19 Thread Patrick Santos
This is likely a configuration issue, since one wrong move in ANY of
that would cause the computer to fail to boot. The supported way to
install encrypted filesystems is the alternate install CD. (If there is
an issue performing that, then we can work on another bug report.)

The report does not show any errors that could be related to encrypting
your drive. Have you tried to use the alternate installation CD, with a
NON-beta version?

[Bug 1001578] Re: Nautilus on SSD is slower than on external HDD

2012-05-19 Thread Patrick Santos
You may want to bring this discussion over to the Ubuntu forums under:
http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=332

While using Nautilus, try the following command in a terminal:
dmesg | tail
If there are any error messages in the dump, there may be a bug here.
Otherwise, it may just be configuration. Older or budget SSDs can have their
controllers overwhelmed by too many reads called stuttering. Generating the
preview with Nautilus causes many such reads.
If you are comfortable with editing your /etc/fstab, you can try adding the
noatime or relatime option to any partition on the SSD (except swap) and
see if that reduces reads enough. I know on my SSD (Kingston SSDNow 128GB) the
noatime option worked wonders on my boot time, although my computer is
probably too fast to notice any change in nautilus performance...

[Bug 999386] Re: Disk access locking whole PC

2012-05-19 Thread Patrick Santos
You are mentioning Virtualbox in your report... What is your host OS,
and is Ubuntu the guest?

If you use large files regularly, you may want to read filesystem benchmarks
such as http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=articleitem=ubuntu_1204_fsnum=1
In my experience (single hard drive) the xfs filesystem worked the best for
large files, ext4 is OK, while ext3 and reiserfs are very slow.

2012-05-19 Thread Patrick Santos
Thanks you for the prompt reply and your patience. I tried two
computers, my main and my test laptop both with the same versions you
are using and bookmark sorting works by default...

The only possibility I can think of now is some artifact of the upgrade,
configuration, or plug-in issue - you can try running Firefox in Safe
Mode, or under a new profile (e.g. new user or the guest account).

See the section on Firefox debugging:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs?action=showredirect=DebuggingFirefox#Try_running_in_safe_mode

In any case, I'll update the description and set the bug back to new as
I cannot find the cause of the bug at the moment.

[Bug 231883] Re: Texlive/pdflatex is very slow on Gutsy/Hardy

2012-05-18 Thread Patrick Santos
I am currently checking whether a trailing slash in $HOME should even be
valid. From what I'm seeing, it isn't / shouldn't be, as such a trailing
slash does change the behaviour of more programs than texlive.

https://common.helixcommunity.org/2004/devdocs/quickstart
http://www.topwebhosts.org/articles/rsync-backup.php

I see this more as a bug against whatever you used to get a trailing slash in
$HOME rather than a bug against texlive.
Did a graphical program or the installer give you a $HOME with trailing slash,
or was it a typo in a system application? If it was the former, then I will
check it out for you and file a bug and / or change request against that
particular tool.

The left side of the Library window does allow manual sorting - only
the right side does. If you want to sort the top level of folders,
then click on All Bookmarks, Bookmarks Menu, or Bookmarks Toobar
(depending on where the folders you want to sort are) and you can use
the right side of the window to do your manual sorting.

[Bug 999425] Re: ubiquity

2012-05-18 Thread Patrick Santos
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read How to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and

[Bug 999436] Re: INFO: task BrdUnostat_gcr:32208 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

2012-05-18 Thread Patrick Santos
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make
Ubuntu better. However, it seems that you are not using a software
package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories. Because of this
the Ubuntu project can not support or fix your particular bug. Please
report this bug to the provider of the software package. Thanks!

If you are interested in learning more about software repositories and
Ubuntu the following pages should be informative:

1. http://www.ubuntu.com/community/ubuntustory/components - information about
Ubuntu repositories
2. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories - information regarding
managing repositories.

Reasoning: In the logs, I noticed:
2.6.18-194.el5
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga)
Both evidently point to Red Hat Linux and not Ubuntu.

[Bug 999812] Re: Unable to paste password straight from keepass to active form

2012-05-18 Thread Patrick Santos
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging
information, in a terminal:
apport-collect 999812

Specifically, may you verify the version of Keepass? The keepass version
in the Ubuntu packages is 2.18+dfsg-2, so 2.19 would be unsupported.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make

not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We understand the difficulties you
are facing, but it is better to raise problems you are having in the
support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are
uncertain if they are bugs. You can also find a valid help posting your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu's community or asking
at http://askubuntu.com. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 1000838] Re: mouse and keyboard not working after 12.04 update

2012-05-18 Thread Patrick Santos
It sounds like your computer is pretty much useable and you'll be better
off getting support from the following sources than sitting around
waiting for some software to change:

See the following places for support:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu
http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=331
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/chat (the #ubuntu IRC channel)

My suggestion as a preliminary step is, if you can get to the terminal, type
the following command after you plug a USB mouse or your KVM:
dmesg

That will print out a lot, but if your mouse doesn't work there will
usually be an error message for you that can help find out what your
issue is. This is best done from a remote computer if you can as it is
evidently difficult to get logs off the affected computer.

[Bug 998312] Re: Firefox froze

2012-05-13 Thread Patrick Santos
Hmm I can't piece together the whole sequence of events that could make
this happen, but one thing I notice is that Firefox's memory usage
exceeded your physical memory and went into swap.

From procStatus.txt:
VmPeak: 1930712 kB
VmSize: 1867308 kB - 1.78 GiB!
VmSwap: 100868 kB

From bootdmsg:
[0.00] 903MB HIGHMEM available.
[0.00] 887MB LOWMEM available.

The question is whether this is a memory leak or simply having a lot of
content open.

[Bug 996796] Re: Software Centre regression - Icons not appearing in launcher when installing new apps

2012-05-13 Thread Patrick Santos
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather
debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and

I still saw the icon installing GNU EMACS 23 using software-center 5.2.1
on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit. Is this bug still affecting you after updating?

[Bug 998854] Re: While browsing for file can use file renaming and file delete

2012-05-13 Thread Patrick Santos
This issue is still present for unity (5.12-0ubuntu1) desktop under Ubuntu
12.04 64-bit on Firefox 12.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1.
I used the upload dialog at skydrive.live.com (although I'm sure any will
work). The upload file dialog only contains Add to bookmarks, Show hidden
files, Show size column, but it would be more appropriate to match other
features by having it show the full context menu for Nautilus, with the show
hidden files option available.

Setting status to confirmed.
I suggest priority Wishlist (ideas for new features which do not yet exist.)

I think this bug may be related to your desktop - can you tell me which
desktop you are using (LXDE, Unity, Gnome Shell, KDE, XFCE)? Along with
that, see below and enter that command so we get the rest of your

[Bug 985896] Re: Wireless problem 12.04 and minor bugs

2012-05-13 Thread Patrick Santos
Human response here (well at least I'm currently defined as human)...

Your bug report seems to be describing multiple problems - a bug report
only should report on ONE problem. If you are encountering many issues,
you make many bug reports! For your maximize and close buttons, try
brining your cursor to the upper-left side of the screen. A maximized
window on the unity desktop hides the extra buttons unless your mouse is
at the upper-left side of the screen.

For the wireless issue, I suggest you re-create the report using the
instructions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#A4._Collect_information_about_the_bug

Use the package network-manager as that will usually get the attention
of the network team.

2012-05-13 Thread Patrick Santos
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. In particular, can
you let us know EVERY application you used to do the configuration of
your terminal shortcuts? That will help narrow down a package.

[Bug 990088] Re: Synaptic crashes on open

2012-05-13 Thread Patrick Santos
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging
information, in a terminal:
apport-collect BUGNUMBER

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for
ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more
about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug in synaptic.
When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and
the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality
at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

[set package and set incomplete due to missing apport information]

[Bug 988517] Re: oem-config-remove-gtk: daemon died message

2012-05-13 Thread Patrick Santos
Package set to ubiquity as per the test case's description.

Colin, in the future, can you try to put in apport information if your test
image can do so properly? Thanks!

[Bug 990862] Re: opengl ceased to work properly since upgrade to 12.04

2012-05-13 Thread Patrick Santos
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather
debugging information, in a terminal:
apport-collect BUGNUMBER
Along with the information, please also let us know what video card you have.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Status set to incomplete as there really isn't anything that can be done
without knowing the opengl driver and video card used.

** Changed in: ubuntu
   Status: New = Incomplete
