I've cycled through all of the options in the sound preferences and none of
them work.

You appear to be using the IEC958 sink, not the analog speakers or
headphones. Is that intentional? You can select another hardware profile
using sound preferences.

[Bug 849638] [NEW] The Scrollbar in the unity dash should have an overlay scrollbar handle

2011-09-13 Thread Patrick Scott
Public bug reported:

For the sake of consistency, the Scrollbar in the unity dash should have
an overlay scrollbar handle just like the rest of the new scrollbars in
the OS. It doesn't have to be orange or anything as that would look
horrible in the dash, it just needs a handle like the other overlay
scrollbars have. There are now 3 completely different scrollbars present
on the Ubuntu desktop and two of them are less than a year old so I'm
singling out the one in the dash as the main culprit since the other
'old style' scrollbars will be changed to overlay scrollbars over
time...

[Bug 849175] [NEW] Search field in dash doesn't behave like a real text field

2011-09-13 Thread Patrick Scott
Public bug reported:

Release 11.10 - Beta 1 - Updated to the latest as of 13th Sept 2011
Tested in: Unity 3D and Unity 2D

There are a few indications that the Text field used in the Unity dash
on both 2d and 3d is not a normal text field [and I'm not talking about
looks here]. These issues make the Search field seem very unpolished
(point No.1 in particular).

1. When hovering over the search field with the mouse pointer, the mouse
pointer icon does not change to a text cursor as it does with any other
text field or text area in the OS/Browser/Applications - (Affects Unity
2D and Unity 3D)

2. Despite the fact that you can highlight text in the Search field
using the keyboard shortcut Shift+ Directional Arrow Left/Right, the
user is unable to highlight text in the Search field using the mouse
pointer by clicking and dragging it over text- (Affects Unity 3D ONLY)

3. Despite the fact that you can Cut, Copy, and Paste text to/from the
Search field using the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+X, Ctrl+C. and Ctrl+V,
the user is unable to Cut, Copy, and Paste using the mouse pointer by
using the context menu through Right-Clicking the Search field (or
Right-Clicking highlighted text in the Search field) - (Affects Unity 2D
and Unity 3D)

Regarding Points 2 and 3, the cardinal rule of keyboard shortcuts is
that they should only be a Secondary means of achieving something that
would otherwise take longer through the GUI. Currently, in the Dash's
Search field case, there is no way of achieving these things through the
GUI and these are therefore Usability bugs and should worked on beyond
the UI freeze deadline.

Regarding Point 3, yes, I am indeed suggesting that a context menu
should be created for the dash containing the Cut, Copy, and Paste
options. Although, I do think that any menu created should look like it
belongs to the dash and not look anything like the traditional GTK
context menus belonging to the rest of the OS/Applications.

P.S: The Start Menu Search field in Windows Vista/7 does not have any of
these issues...

[Bug 736222] Re: cannot paste into dash (particularly relevant for alt+f2)

2011-08-28 Thread Patrick Scott
Just tested in Unity 3D (only got it working on VBOX now) on Oneric
Alpha and the bug still exists there even though it has been fixed in
Unity 2D. It looks like Unity 2D is more stable all around in Oneric -
Let's hope they get this and some of the other Unity 3D issues resolved

Yes, I really hope this bug will be fixed for Oneric! Not being able to
paste in the dash gives a really low quality feel to it - it's just
another reasons for bloggers to "hate" Unity even though it is
progressing in the right direction

[Bug 772786] [NEW] Bluetooth enabled sometimes prevents shutdown Natty 64bit

2011-04-28 Thread Patrick Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-bluetooth

Please correct me if this is the wrong place to report this bug...

Every since I installed Natty 64 beta 1 on my machine, the computer
would periodically fail to shut down or restart maybe 50% of the time.
The screen would simply go black after the DE was killed and eventually
the fans would start spinning... I'm fairly new to linux so I wasn't
able to find any logging info to help me find the issue, however, I
finally tracked it down today! It turns out bluetooth was failing to
stop and preventing shut down (I figured this out by noticing the wifi
led on my dell xps m1530 would switch off while the bluetooth led would
stay on).

I've since disabled bluetooth through my bios and everything has been
running smoothly since! I've done more than 20 reboots without a hitch
in the last hour

When somebody gets to this report they should consider it a fairly high
priority because I did not have this issue with Lucid or Maverick so it
must be something new in Natty (maybe the new Kernel or a new
driver??)..

[Bug 578000] Re: [Lucid] wrong bluetooth power state at start up

2011-04-24 Thread Patrick Scott
The real issue here is that there is no GUI option/setting to have
bluetooth turned off at startup. I think many users [especially laptop
users] do not like to have bluetooth turned on every time the computer
boots due to its power usage. This is why this user had the need to
configure it manually and it is clear that bluetooth applet is not at
all setup for this type of configuration...

No neither of these changes worked for me, I'm afraid. Although I never

I'm quite happy with my workaround to add empathy as a Startup
Application. Setting the command "empathy -h" starts it in hidden window
mode and simulates the desired behavior quite well :)

I just did a clean install of Natty Beta 2 -x86 on an old spare hard

when I start ubuntu, the Change Status options in the Me Menu are
disabled until I launch empathy. I have fixed the issue myself by adding
empathy to the "Startup Applications" dialog in System Settings.

@pablomme, I am not sure why we are seeing different things here, do you
have Empathy set as a Startup Application?

Oh dear, In that case I apologise for the confusion! I had seen

its an upgrade issue left over since Lucid or Maverick. I'll do a clean

I think our wires are crossed, of course I agree with you that accounts
need to be specified before the user can "go online". My issue is that
every time I boot my machine I need to open empathy once per session to
activate the Me Menu otherwise the "Change Status" options are disabled
(greyed out) for the entire session (my accounts were configured long
ago). I'm running the Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 2 so the bug 550824 issue has
been fixed on my machine where as the issue from bug 452067 still
remains..

[Bug 452067] Re: indicator-applet-session should launch empathy if I change my status

2011-04-22 Thread Patrick Scott
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 550824 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/550824

This bug is not a duplicate of bug 550824. These are two very different
issues. Bug 550824 is related to the 'Chat Status' change options
becoming disabled (greyed out) after the user changes uses the Me Menu
to change his Chat Status to offline. It is a simple usability bug and
has been fixed for Natty I believe. This Bug (452067), however, is
related to the 'Chat Status' options being disabled (greyed out) when
the user logs in and there is no apparent way to make those options
enabled using the Me Menu. This is a much bigger issue as the user must
instead somehow know that he must launch the empathy application to get
these options enabled and get to work (that's no good for new users, I
was left confused when I joined Linux @ Ubuntu 10.04 ).

Expected Result for this Bug Report:
- Once the user logs in, he should be able to change his 'Chat Status' from
Offline to any of the other available options using the Me Menu WITHOUT having
to first launch Empathy.

As mentioned by one of the earlier posters here, invoking this change of
status probably shouldn't launch the Contact List. The option "Show
Contact List" should also be added to the Me Menu. I have submitted a
Bug Report 763266 for that but it is yet to be triaged
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/indicator-me/+bug/763266).

It disappoints me that, after 12 months of using Linux and Ubuntu, this
issue which has really annoyed me since day 1 still hasn't been worked
on and yet this Bug has been reported all the way back in October 2009
and has since been marked as a duplicate.

[Bug 550824] Re: Once status is set to offline the me menu becomes disabled so can't be used to go online

2011-04-22 Thread Patrick Scott
@ Tony Reports, the work for this bug report has been finished and is
released in the Ubunty 11.04 'Natty' Beta. You also mentioned that the
options in the Me Menu are also disabled when you log in. This is
actually because you must start the Empathy chat application, once you
do those options in the Me Menu come alive. Obviously this is also an
issue since there is no way that a new user will know you have to start
Empathy [as far as you they are concerned, the Me Menu is the chat
application!]... I have submitted the following bug report for this but
it has not been seen yet, I proposed adding a "Show Contact List" option
to the Me Menu which would launch/show the Empathy Contact List and also
enable those status options!

Per the above message, it seems the dev's will be adding "Open new

multiple windows instead of adding it for every application. So it is
already available in firefox now, I assume it will be coming soon to
nautilus and GNOME terminal but the option won't be there for
applications like Vuze or games etc since that would confuse users..

I agree, especially since middle-click is going to be an important
feature in Unity as a shortcut to open new instances of an application,
there needs to be support for trackpad users. Like a lot of laptop
users, I never sit at a desk and hook up a mouse. At the very least, an
entry should be added to the mouse settings in the Control Center for
non-"power" users to configure.

[Bug 763247] [NEW] Overlay ScrollBar not easily findable in a large document

2011-04-16 Thread Patrick Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: overlay-scrollbar

When viewing document with a large amount pages (E.g try this one:
http://design.canonical.com/wp-
content/uploads/2010/06/EmpathyChat_CanonicalDesignResearch2.pdf ). The
Scroller is reduced to a very small and thin orange bar/strip. When you
are at page 70, for example, of that large document the Scroller is not
very easy to find (especially on a maximised window). This is a
usability issue as traditional thick scrollbars are much easier to find
when the document is large.

This could be easily fixed by invoking some action when the pointer is
moved toward the right edge of the scrollable window. There could be an
animation where the orange bit would light up with a yellow glow or
flash to draw its attention to the user. This animation would also draw
attention to the fact that the window is scrollable because as it
stands, some users new users may be confused by the new scrollbars.

[Bug 396268] Re: Banshee uses too much CPU

2011-04-16 Thread Patrick Scott
In my case CPU usage jumps to an average to 60 - 90 percent usage on
both cores in the Gnome System Monitor "Resource" tab as soon as Banshee
is started on 11.04. What is interesting though, is that on the Process
tab of the System Monitor, Banshee registers as only using 1 - 5
percent. Also when I close Banshee, the CPU usage does not drop, the
only way to bring down my CPU is to Shut down the system, however, when
I do this I get a "File Manager" is not responding dialog. In my case it
seems that Banshee isn't playing nice with nautilus on natty, one thing
of note is that I have my music stored in a separate ntfs partition and
not in the home directory.

Ubuntu "Natty" Beta 2 - 11.04 (x64 bit) - Banshee 2.0

[Bug 762203] Re: Computer is not turned off at sutdown

2011-04-16 Thread Patrick Scott
I'm seeing [what appears to be] ]the same issue on 11.04. I'm using the
Unity desktop, shut down seems to halt right after the running
applications and DE are killed. For me, this happens 50% of the time,
the rest of the time it shuts down cleanly. Its seems to be fairly
random also since I'm not doing anything special in the sessions where
it fails to shut down. I'm also using proprietary nVidia drivers and I'm
running 64 bit ubuntu.

[Bug 761295] [NEW] sudo nautilus is not using global menu

2011-04-14 Thread Patrick Scott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hi! I'm not sure if this is a known issue or a work in progress, but I
couldn't find any mention of it on launchpad. So its obviously the goal
that most applications will eventually use the globalmenu and that is a
work in progress. However, I thought it was odd that nautilus in normal
user mode uses the globalmenu fine but nautilus opened in sudo does not
use the globalmenu. I'm posting here to make sure this wasn't an
oversight.

Thanks
