[Bug 271019] Re: kernel does not detect card reader if card is inserted in reader before boot

2009-05-09 Thread paul
Both readers now work for me as well on both my AOs. Now that a fix has
been identified what does it take to have it implemented as a permanent
fix rather than a workaround that most users will not be able to find?

[Bug 374601] [NEW] Touchpad not recognised as a touchpad, and does not have scrolling

2009-05-10 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

I installed Kubuntu 9.04 today after using one of the pre-release
version of it, and the touchpad doesn't have any of the extra functions
it used to, like the virtual scroll wheel. Scrolling suddenly
disappeared in the last week or so whilst I was using the pre-release so
I just figured it had randomly broken and that a reinstall would fix it.

>From what i can tell, it looks as though it is being recognised as a
generic PS/2 mouse.

I have followed the instructions located on the wiki for reporting this:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection

Any help would be appreciated with this issue.

Thanks

[Bug 370541] Re: Jaunty's GDM Autologin doesn't work anymore

2009-05-11 Thread Paul
I've tried to search for the exact command i've made, copied from the
internet. Maybe was it "sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults 13 01" instead of
"sudo update-rc.d gdm defaults", i did this cause i've been trying to
remove gdm but i've seen that a lot of gnome functions were not
avaliable without it, so i needed to reactivate it.

Otherwise, i'm sorry but i can't help you anymore, cause i haven't got
this problem anymore...

But i follow this thread !

See ya

[Bug 112703] Re: tomboy sometimes starts with search dialog rather than as minimized applet

2009-04-29 Thread Paul
Hello!

I can confirm the behavior described in the previous posts (Tomboy
starts up with search dialog on first boot, exits when the window is
closed.) The above described workaround also works fine for me, now
tomboy starts as panel applet every time.

Should this bug really be expired though? While it's not a major problem, I
found it pretty annoying and it stands in the way for a smoother user
experience.
regards
Paul

[Bug 191251] Re: [needs-packaging] php5-embed

2009-02-13 Thread Paul
Hi Chuck,

The main php package seems like the only natural place to put it. Can I
ask for your reasons for not doing it there?

In case its a misunderstanding, I'll make a case for it. This is a
first-class, built-in, configuration option, maintained by the PHP
Group. Support, bugs etc all goes through the standard PHP channels.

This isn't an extension/library like imap, or a patch like suhoshin. Its
at the same level at php5-cli and php5-cgi.

If this doesn't go into the main php package, where would it go? Any
other request would (I presume) be sent back here.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

[Bug 251160] Re: Mythbuntu CC fails to shutdown MySQL when adding primary server role.

2009-02-07 Thread Paul
Just did a dist upgrade to 8.10 so this wasn't retested. Since no one
else has posted any follow ups, maybe the problem was just due to a
unique abnormality in my system config.

Unless I need to wipe and start fresh it's unlikely I'll have the time
to set up a new install to test this out. But if I do I'll post a follow
up.

[Bug 292619] Re: Kernel panic on boot if SMP (ASUS M3A-H/HDMI)

that it works.

Please could you confirm that this fix will also feed through to the
-server version as well as the -generic version of the kernel? It's the
server version that I use.

Thank you.

[Bug 285392] Re: Softreset failed (device not ready)

2009-04-19 Thread Paul
I reported in November that I also get these "Softreset failed (device
not ready)" messages. Here are the specs of the system I see them on:

Ubuntu server 2.6.27-11 SMP.
AMD PHENOM™ X3 8750
4GB CORSAIR XMS2 800MHz
ASUS M3A-H HDMI
2x160GB SERIAL ATA II HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (7,200rpm)
2x80GB SERIAL ATA II HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (7,200rpm)

Sorry, without opening the computer up, I can't tell you what make the
hard drives are. If someone knows a command that will provide me that
info, I'd be happy to run it and tell you.

[Bug 363897] [NEW] Thumb drive functions as read only even though it shows read/write.

2009-04-19 Thread paul
Public bug reported:

When I insert a thumb drive it mounts as read only (even though it shows
it is read/write I cannot delete or add files). If I reformat with
Gparted to Fat32 it will mount as read/write, but upon a restart it will
mount as read only again. I am running the latest 9.04 using ext4.

On other computers both Ubuntu and Windows the thumb drive works fine.

[Bug 360719] Re: Constant white noise from speaker (jaunty)

2009-04-26 Thread Paul
I have had this problem since upgrading to 8.04. Latitude D630 64bit realtime
kernel (changing to non-realtime kernel doesn't help). Upgrading to 8.10
didn't help. I was using KDE, and during 8.10 I changed to Kubuntu, which
didn't help. Now 9.04 inherited the problem as well. I just found someone
claimed upgrading BIOS solved it, but upgrading my BIOS to the latest A15
didn't help. Another guy it was fixed in the 180.11 drivers, see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1084125
But I don't know what I should do with that.

[Bug 352441] [NEW] file index is too big - discontinuing index

2009-03-31 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

Tracker started behaving strangely, not returning full results, etc. So
I killed it and ran from the command line. Here's what I get

file index is too big - discontinuing index

I restarted Tracker using verbose 3 and have attached details. Here's
some more below:

Index stats
Files: 55514
Folders: 5699
Documents: 3455
Images: 19839
Music: 2524
Videos: 1714
Text: 5486
Development: 5323
Other: 11474

Notable lines from attached file:
Opening index /home/paul/.cache/tracker/file-index.db
Bucket count (max is 524288) is 589811 and Record Count is 373234
Opening index /home/paul/.cache/tracker/file-update-index.db
Bucket count (max is 524288) is 589811 and Record Count is 16605
Opening index /home/paul/.cache/tracker/email-index.db
Bucket count (max is 524288) is 589811 and Record Count is 0

Where are the settings for the max bucket count above? Also, are they
set at this limit for a reason and have I genuinely gone above the max,
or is that the bug?

A reindex may solve, but I feel like this problem will likely reoccur.
So maybe a more permanent solution is needed.

[Bug 30447] Re: Lockup problems with both the free xorg ATI driver and the proprietary fglrx driver, using various ATI cards

2006-06-27 Thread Paul
I'm also getting lockup problems now that I've upgraded from breezy to
dapper, with the accompanying ATI driver upgrade. My graphics card is:

:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon
Mobility M6 LY

... on a Thinkpad X31. I am using the free xorg ATI driver. The bug I
have (which seems to be the same as at least some of the complaints on
the thread) are semi-random full lockups when there are large screen
redraws, particularly things involving fullscreen.

I used to lock up after a few minutes when switching between screens in
metacity or moving around large windows, but now after removing "load
dri" and "load glx" and adding option "NoAccel" I've only been locking
up when I am doing something in fullscreen or switching between
fullscreen and non-fullscreen (my trigger for this is watching a movie
with mplayer as "mplayer -vo sdl -ao sdl -framedrop foo.avi" or "mplayer
-vo sdl -ao esd -framedrop foo.avi" and then hitting "f" to switch
between fullscreen and non-full screen).

There also seems to be a timing element involved---fullscreen will work
when I've just rebooted my machine and logged into gdm, but after a few
minutes fullscreen will lock up with either the current screen, or a set
of black and white dots (often with a small rectangle somewhere on the
screen).

[Bug 313302] Re: 'persistent' parameter does not work in combination with 'iso-scan/filename=...' parameter?

2009-05-21 Thread Paul
Thank you Brian for your reply and sorry for my late reply.

As this problem with the 'persistent' parameter isn't high on my
priority list, I waited to see if it would be fixed in the 9.04 release.

I can tell you, it's not. Moreover, the whole 'iso-scan/filename='
parameter is not working in this release! It simply boots into the text-
based installer. So It has actually gotten worse with Casper : ).

Maybe I should file another bug report for this. Or I wait a little
longer for Grub 2 that seems to support booting from an arbitrary ISO
image.

Anyhow, thanks again for your help!

Paul

[Bug 376258] Re: mythfrontend sound breaks up and drops

2009-05-25 Thread Paul
I got the Cracking to stop by going to:

Utilities/Setup --> Setup --> TV Settings --> Playback

In here uncheck:

* Extra Audio Buffering
* Use video as timebase

Utilities/Setup --> Setup -->General

Change Audio output device: ALSA:mythspdif
Passthrough output device: ALSA:iec958:{AES0 0x02}

Check:
Enable AC3 to SPDIF passthrough
Enable DTS to SPDIF passthrough

Added this to my /etc/asound.conf

Code:

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "spdif"
rate 48000
format S16_LE
}
}

If that does not work try:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

reboot or reload alsa modules.

[Bug 407646] [NEW] Impossible to upload correctly a 380kb file on a ftp server mounted through gvfs with pcmanfm

2009-08-01 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pcmanfm

After having mounted my ftp folder with gvfs-mount,
when i try to copy my 380kb file in my distant folder with pcmanfm, the
progress bar disappears at 100% but the file is sometimes less heavy than it
should be, sometimes even 0kb sized.

With smaller files, it appears to work correctly, and with a simple cp
command too.

Couldn't it be due to an internal timeout of pcmanfm if it doesn't expect the
copy to take as much time ?

[Bug 256749] Re: Unable to mount location -- Internal error: No mount object for mounted volume

2009-06-01 Thread Paul

Hi everyone,

As I cannot upgrade to Ubuntu Jaunty (common & horrible ATI legacy
videocard Linux Support issue), I can confirm that the following
solution works for those who use Ubuntu 8.10 (or Linux Mint 6 (Felicia)
in my case).

(This fix was already suggested by Cecond Power in the post above)

1. Install the ntfs-config package through the Package Manager or your Terminal.
2. Make sure the problematic drives are unmounted (e.g. by rebooting).
3. Start the NTFS configuration tool found under 'administration' or 'settings'
in your start menu.
4. Make sure the drives are selected in the tool and press ok. (and then ok
again in the next screen).
5. Restart Linux and now the drives should mount automatically without issues.

It is only a workaround but it gets things fixed. And it is an easy fix
for those with little experience with Linux (like myself).

2009-06-06 Thread Paul
This bug affected me too and I can confirm the workarounds in this
thread: See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7410040

It's find it very annoying that I had to experience a failed upgrade,
when this bug had been reported and confirmed for over a month. It would
be good if a warning about this bug for people running raid could be
placed immediately on the release notes of Jaunty, with links to the
workarounds presented here. At least it could waste lots of other people
time and effort searching for the cause and a solution while the bug is
being fixed.

Re: [Bug 15051] Re: grep -P is not supported

2006-12-14 Thread Paul
Rather than discussing fixing the documentation, can we discuss fixing
the problem, and having grep -P supported?

As I stated before, pcregrep isnt a serious solution. Nor is using
perl. So the options are to include libpcre.so in /lib, or replacing
/bin/grep with /usr/bin/grep (I have yet to hear about why this is
against policy).

I'm sure there are other solutions. Anyone?

[Bug 314793] [NEW] Se reproduce DVD pero no se puede leer con Nautilus

2009-01-07 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

[Bug 305537] Re: Mercurial 1.1 released! plz upgrade + backport

2009-01-11 Thread paul
So... Is anyone working on a package for this? :)

I'm trying to decide whether there's a need to help create a package for
this, or whether to just install the latest version from source.

Is there a process that one can follow to update the ubuntu package?

Paul

[Bug 313302] [NEW] 'persistent' parameter does not work in combination with 'iso-scan/filename=...' parameter?

2009-01-02 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

As introduction, please have a look at the attached menu.lst of my 1GB
USB stick which I mainly use for emergency situations. The USB stick
contains a single FAT16 partition of 1GB. I specifically use ISO files
of the various distributions to be able to burn it on a CD in case the
BIOS does not allow to boot from USB.

Although the root of the partition contains a casper-rw file (containing
an ext3 filesystem) and the 'persistent' kernel parameter is added,
persistance is not working and /var/log/casper.log mentions 'Unable to
find the persistent medium.'

To be sure, I've added the casper-rw label to both the FAT16 partition
itself and the ext3 partition inside the casper-rw file, but still no
persistance.

It seems that the 'persistent' parameter does not work in combination
with 'iso-scan/filename=...' parameter. I consider this a bug.

[Bug 284408] Re: r3xx Hardware does not work with fglrx [EPR#257839]

2008-12-21 Thread Paul

I am using a ATI Radeon™ 9700 PRO (Desktop) card.

Migrated from Windows XP to Xubuntu 8.10 (so fresh install).

First used the xserver-xorg-video drivers, which worked ok. But I need
the proprietary drivers for some games (under Wine) so I removed the
xserver-xorg-video drivers and then installed the fglrx drivers. First
tried the fglrx drivers in the repositories, then the 8.12 version on
the ati.amd website (using the install method given on their website).

Both didn't work (system returns to the low graphics setting). When
entering "aticonfig --initial -f" in a Terminal I get a segmentation
fault. Editing the xorg config file manually results in nothing as well
(system returns to the low graphics setting).

Will install the xserver-xorg drivers for now, but I really hope ati-amd
will solve this issue soon.

[Bug 307578] Re: libxine1-ffmpeg not installed with xfmedia

2008-12-21 Thread Paul

Appreciate the efforts on fixing this.

I was experiencing the same issues on my freshly installed Xubuntu 8.10
PC, but then with video playback (wmv files for example). Although I had
all common codecs installed (through Totem, which I use as well),
Xfmedia didn't start up any of the videos.

It would only start up, blink with the video screen once and disappear
(leaving only the play/pause/stop screen etc. behind).

Then read somewhere that installing libxine1-ffmpeg could help (thanks
Boris). Did that and now it works without problems!

[Bug 213937] Re: [hardy] networking and ifplugd services not started when booting or resuming

2008-12-16 Thread Paul

Hi everyone,

I am experiencing the same problem on my IBM X40 running Xubuntu 8.10. I
used to be able to fix the problem (under 7.4-8.4) using the
STOP_SERVICES="networking" change in the ACPI file, but this no longer
works in 8.10. The only way to re-establish network connection, is to
restart the computer after hibernate or suspend.

Quite frustrating.

[Bug 149453] e1000 defaulting to eth1

2007-10-05 Thread Paul
Public bug reported:

Hardware: Dell PowerEdge 1800

The onboard e1000 NIC defaults to eth1 using Ubuntu 7.10 beta. It's the
only network card in the machine and an ifconfig -a lists lo and eth1.

[0.00] Linux version 2.6.22-12-server ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version

Fixed via:
