If I add an ogg file with insert/movie and sound. then play the slide
show and verify sound does not play.

Next save the presentation.

Reopen presentation still does not play.

Exit OO.

Copy the X.odp to X.zip.

unzip the X.zip.

edit the file content.xml changing
href=media/tromba.ogg
to
href=../../Sounds/tromba.ogg

The relative path to the sound file.

then rezip all the files unzipped.
copy resulting .zip file to .odp

Now open the hacked .odp file using Open Office Impress.
Sound now plays when using Slide Show!

This should be a hint as to where the problem is!

[Bug 723755] Re: When using Samba authenticating via Kerberos against a windows AD, winbind hangs on boot

2011-03-10 Thread Paul Elliott
Hi Chuck - what logs would you like and from what point? The point being
I wasn't getting a lot of logs - samba would fail with a rather obscure
failure to connect if you attempted to access the shares at that point,
and obviously winbind was not logging anything as it had hung. The fix
was purely guesswork on my behalf, there wasn't really any help in the
logs.

I fail to see the low importance decision as well, as anyone attempting
to authenticate a Ubuntu LTS server samba / kerberos box against an AD
domain will hit this, guaranteed - I'm not running anything not taken
from Apt, and this isn't an uncommon application for samba, at least
until 4 is released anyway.

[Bug 723755] [NEW] When using Samba authenticating via Kerberos against a windows AD, winbind hangs on boot

2011-02-23 Thread Paul Elliott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Hi all,

I recently set about making a linux box (Ubuntu Server LTS 10.04)
authenticate against a windows based AD via Kerberos, in order to
provide shares which would accept domain logins. Everything (eventually)
went fine with this, until I rebooted the box.

The first thing I noticed was that the share was inaccessible until
smbd, nmbd and winbind were restarted. It was at this point that I
noticed that while smbd and nmbd had been converted to upstart, winbind
had not, and I presumed that it was something to do with startup order.

It was at this point I put a head back on the box, and noticed something
else. Although I had been able to log in via ssh, the screen was still
stuck at the point of starting winbind. The local user was able to
switch to another TTY and log in, but the startup sequence was stuck for
some reason.

I then renamed the init.d script for winbind, and replaced it with the
upstart script suggested in a bug here
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/612958), however
this did not solve the problem. I also noticed at this point that the
winbind process seemed to be running, but fully hung, unresponsive to
either its init script or upstart. The only way to deal with this was to
kill -9 it, and then it seemed to behave. It still took the restarting
of smbd in order for the share to become accessible however.

The final solution I found was to change the winbind upstart script AND
the samba upstart script to start so that they would only start on
networking up (net-device-up IFACE!=lo) in addition to their original
start on stanza, looking very much in this respect the same as nmdb
already does.

In summary:

If you start winbind attempting to authenticate against an AD before the
networking is up, then it seems to hang permanently.
If you start smbd (also attempting to authenticate against an AD) before the
networking is up, then the AD authentication will not work until both smbd and
winbind are restarted.

[Bug 569757] Re: NIS upstart dependancy broken for lucid

2010-08-17 Thread Paul Elliott
Branch added that switches to upstart for the NIS package in Maverick.
We've had a version of this branch running locally for a couple of
months now with no known issues although we are only using the client
side of the package. I've done very limited testing of the server side.
Feedback appreciated.

[Bug 489142] Re: All scripts in /usr/share/cacti/cli have a wrong path to the include directory

2010-08-17 Thread Paul Elliott
This issue was resolved with the release of cacti 0.8.7e-2 in Lucid.
Given that the current LTS has the fix I don't believe an SRU is
required. If you feel differently then please submit an SRU as per the
guidelines here:

[Bug 493156] Re: Please enable CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT

2010-08-08 Thread Paul Elliott
SRU justification

IMPACT: Without this option enabled tools such as iotop are missing
functionality that is extremely useful for diagnosing performance
issues.

DEVELOPMENT BRANCH: The option CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT was enabled in
Mavericks kernel 2.6.35-5.6 without any reported regressions.

PATCH: Simply enable CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT in next kernel release.

TEST CASE: Run iotop and check that SWAPIN and IO columns are populated.

REGRESSION POTENTIAL: Old reports exist of performance regressions with
the option enabled, however these regressions have never been proven or
quantified to the best of my knowledge and has never been witnessed at
our site running kernels with the option enabled.

has no noticeable performance hit.

[Bug 557890] Re: transfer lockup connecting to a NetApp/CIFS share

2010-07-08 Thread Paul Elliott
We've just found that disabling extended attributes with either the
nouser_xattr mount option or by disabling CONFIG_CIFS_XATTR in the
kernel, will allow us to use a NetApp CIFS mount albeit without the
extended attribute support. Can anyone else confirm that disabling
extended attribute support allows them to use NetApp based CIFS mounts?
If so I'll report back to NetApp. (My original close was closed and
classed as unsupported unfortunately).

[Bug 577540] Re: Provided by Ubuntu leaks memory

2010-05-15 Thread Paul Elliott
Testing with the original software-center 2.0.3 showed an increase of
~10 megabytes on each reload of the software list, 2.0.4 from lucid-
proposed no longer leaks to this extent although usage of the app does
still increase slightly over time. As the remaining leak is small I'm
happy to mark this as verification-done.

[Bug 570583] Re: does not check all required locks in is_package_system_locked

2010-05-13 Thread Paul Elliott
I'm not sure 0.1.20.1 from lucid-proposed fixes the issue, after
following the test case and installing the proposed package, update-

issuing:

I've tested with 1.6.1-0ubuntu1build1 from lucid-proposed and my

an icon with an emblem created with the older GVFS. Does the fix simply
address files with emblems added after installing 1.6.1-0ubuntu1build1

[Bug 252686] Re: Reload action on init script kills daemon

2010-03-31 Thread Paul Elliott
SRU: Minimal patch to fix 'reload' action in exim4 init script

I would like to nominate this for SRU in Hardy. Newer releases do not
have this issue as the underlying problem in init-functions is fixed:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+source/exim4/+bug/252686/comments/2

Currently it's not possible to reload exim4 using the init script on
Hardy. It currently kills the running daemon without warning. This patch
fixes the behaviour of the init script by directly calling start-stop-
daemon rather that using the faulty killproc function in init-scripts.
Regression potential is low as the same fix has already previously been
applied to both freeradius and nagios2 without issue.

TEST CASE:

1. Install and configure updated exim4.
2. Issue a '/etc/init.d/exim4 reload' - the exim4 daemon should remain running
if the patch is successful.

[Bug 530632] Re: Upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04 fails on update-initramfs

2010-03-03 Thread Paul Elliott
A little piece of extra information that may be useful. Before I start
the do-release-upgrade the file /etc/modprobe.d/arch-aliases exists as a
symlink to ./arch/i386 but something appears to be removing it before
the update-initramfs runs resulting in the error and failed upgrade.
This leaves the system unbootable, any attempts to reboot result in the
machine getting dropped to the initramfs shell.

[Bug 530632] [NEW] Upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04 fails on update-initramfs

2010-03-02 Thread Paul Elliott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

For the past 3 days (at least) I have been failing to upgrade 8.04 to
10.04 with do-release-upgrade -d due to a failure in the update-
initramfs trigger. The terminal output is shown below:

Processing triggers for initramfs-tools ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-27-server
cpio: ./etc/modprobe.d/arch-aliases: Function stat failed: No such file or
directory
update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-27-server
dpkg: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

The upgrade then aborts. Please let me know what further information is
required to help fix this issue.

[Bug 506297] Re: Graphical Ubuntu logo enabled on servers, no more login prompt

2010-02-11 Thread Paul Elliott
+1 for comment #9 from Etienne.

Unless Plymouth is absolutely required for the boot process on a server
then I don't see what benefits it brings. Feel free to correct me
though. I would much rather see every kernel/boot message on a plain
text console for my servers. (The opposite applies of course for my
desktops!) The old method of removing 'quiet' and 'splash' from the
kernel parameters no longer seems to work either making debugging of
slow booting machines difficult as nothing is printed to the screen
unless an actual error occurs.
