[Bug 1274613] [NEW] module-bluetooth-discover does not load on login

2014-01-30 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Public bug reported:

The following lines appear in /etc/pulse/default.pa, which I have not
modified:

.ifexists module-bluetooth-discover.so
load-module module-bluetooth-discover
.endif

Expected: module-bluetooth-discover is loaded on login, as configured.

Observed: pulseaudio's module-bluetooth-discover does not load on login.
My system does not detect and set up sinks when I connect to Bluetooth
devices (including an A2DP speaker and a headset).

If I issue, in a terminal window:

$ pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover
24

…then the devices are detected and sinks set up correctly.

[Bug 913601] Re: 'fn' key not functional on Apple wireless keyboard

2013-12-16 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Sometime between 12.04 and 13.10 the device ID was added to the kernel
sources, so I no longer experience this bug. Since 11.10 has passed EOL,
and I'm no longer using 12.04 through 13.04 (so not interested if it's
fixed in those versions), I've marked this Invalid.

[Bug 1176810] Re: Kernel panic with USB 3.0 mass storage device

2013-07-23 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Hi Christopher,

After applying the BIOS update, I've managed to do about 20 GB worth of
transfers (some photos) via the USB 3.0 port without any issue.
Previously, this transfer would have been long enough to trigger the
kernel panic.

I will do some deliberate testing with dd today, and if I can't
reproduce it, I'll consider it fixed and mark this bug Invalid. Thanks
for your suggestion!

[Bug 1176810] Re: Kernel panic with USB 3.0 mass storage device

2013-07-17 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Hi Brad,

Coincidentally, I forgot to use the unaffected 2.0 port today (jet lagged after
a long flight) and once again experienced a kernel panic. I am using:
$ uname -a
Linux khaeru-laptop 3.8.0-27-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul 9 00:17:05 UTC 2013
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

There doesn't appear to be a raring mainline kernel newer than the one I
tried in comment #6.

If you'd like me to provide another screenshot as proof, please let me
know.

[Bug 1176810] Re: Kernel panic with USB 3.0 mass storage device

2013-05-08 Thread Paul Kishimoto
The mainline kernel does not fix this bug.

I installed linux-
image-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_amd64.deb and the
associated linux-headers- packages from the mainline builds repository.
This was the latest version available for raring, which I am using.

Attached is a dmesg log. I…
- boot
- power on the enclosure, connected to the USB 2.0 port
- mount a partition from one disk in the enclosure
- transfer some data to it from another disk using dd, i.e.:

$ sudo dd if=/dev/sdb
of=/media/khaeru/eebb644a-a12f-469c-a5d5-b50dfccf074c/tmp.img bs=1G count=1
iflag=direct oflag=direct
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 63.4855 s, 16.9 MB/s

- unmount the partition, power off the enclosure
- connect the enclosure to the USB 3.0 port, power on the enclosure
- mount the same partition and attempt to run the same dd command

The attached dmesg is from just before dd is run. The attached image is
the kernel panic screen.

[Bug 1062647] Re: eSATA failure with JMicron JMB321 - PMP product ID mismatch

2013-05-08 Thread Paul Kishimoto
As it turns out, I don't think my host hardware supported eSATA port
multiplier. I have a Dell Optiplex 980 small form factor with an Intel
Q57 Express chipset. Although the Q57 documentation from Intel says that
port multipliers are supported, it appears to be disabled in the
Optiplex system. I was able to get eSATA port multiplier to work with an
eSATA add-in card.

[Bug 1177773] [NEW] Nautilus 3.6 Copy To… error for remote targets

2013-05-08 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Public bug reported:

In Nautilus 3.6, the extra pane has been removed. This has been filed
as a bug separately (bug #1173648), but it appears the upstream
developers are adamant about not reintroducing it, the pleas of users
notwithstanding. So, I am trying to learn the new, intended workflow.

That other bug links to an upstream discussion
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683048) where one comment
reads: Folders open in other windows are added to the sidebar of the
Move to/Copy to dialogs for quick access. From this I understand
that the new, intended workflow is to open multiple windows and use the
context menu Move To/Copy To dialogs.

However, this does not work for remote (network) locations.

To reproduce:
- Open a Nautilus window
- Connect to a server
- Open a second Nautilus window
- Select a local file
- In the context menu, choose Copy To…
- Observe that the remote directory which is open in the first Nautilus window
is available in the dialog sidebar (attached screenshot)
- Click on the remote directory in the dialog sidebar

Expected:
- The file can be copied to the remote location which is open in the other
Nautilus window

Observed:
- An error dialog reading The folder contents cannot be displayed / Cannot
change to folder because it is not local (second screenshot)
- The file cannot be copied in this manner

[Bug 1176810] [NEW] Kernel panic with USB 3.0 mass storage device

2013-05-06 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Public bug reported:

I have the following hardware:
* Dell XPS 13, which has two USB ports—one USB 2.0, one USB 3.0.
* Sans Digital MS4UM+B (http://www.sansdigital.com/mobilestor/ms4umplusb.html)
with four hard disks.

I am trying to transfer data between two of the disks in the enclosure,
using dd.

When I connect the enclosure to the USB 2.0 port, dmesg contains:
[ 892.056502] usb 3-1: new high-speed USB device number 3 using xhci_hcd
[ 892.073556] usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=152d, idProduct=0551
[ 892.073567] usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=5
[ 892.073573] usb 3-1: Product: USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge
[ 892.073578] usb 3-1: Manufacturer: JMicron
[ 892.073582] usb 3-1: SerialNumber: DCA1861915FF
…and I can transfer hundreds of gigabytes without issue, at USB 2.0 speeds (20
MB/s).

When I connect the enclosure to the USB 3.0 port, dmesg contains:
[ 658.873399] usb 4-2: new SuperSpeed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd
[ 658.890861] usb 4-2: New USB device found, idVendor=152d, idProduct=0551
[ 658.890872] usb 4-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=5
[ 658.890878] usb 4-2: Product: USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge
[ 658.890883] usb 4-2: Manufacturer: JMicron
[ 658.890887] usb 4-2: SerialNumber: DCA1861915FF
…and I invariably experience a kernel panic shortly after data transfer begins.
I attach two screenshots. If I can manage to probe dd (sudo killall --signal
USR1 dd), the transfer appears to be going at USB 3.0 speeds.

The enclosure was not powered on when I ran 'ubuntu-bug linux' to report
this, so I'll attach another dmesg showing the device being attached to
first the USB 3.0, then the USB 2.0 port.

[Bug 1169105] [NEW] Matching fails with .desktop files containing Terminal=true

2013-04-15 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Public bug reported:

1. Install any two or more packages with .desktop files that contain
Terminal=true — for instance, 'ipython', 'htop', or 'byobu'.
2. Open the unity dash.
3. For each application, drag its icon from the dash to the unity launcher,
locking it to the launcher.
4. Close the dash.
5. Start one application using the launcher icon.
6. Start the other application using the launcher icon.
(7. Optionally, start more applications using their launcher icons.)

Expected: each launcher icon shows a white triangle indicating an open
window.

Observed:
- The icon of the application launched in #5 shows two (or more) white
triangles.
- The icon(s) of any application(s) launched subsequently show(s) no white
triangles.
- Switching between the two (or more) open applications using the launcher or
Alt+Tab (as opposed to Alt+`) is not possible.

In the image (bug.png) — I used to be able to click where it says
Available and choose another status (Busy, Away, Offline, Invisible)

[Bug 911064] Re: Apple Bluetooth Keyboard Fn key not working

2012-11-23 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Although Alpha 1 is not released yet, and I won't upgrade that early
anyway, this bug appears to be fixed in raring ringtail. The device ID
0255 appears in the kernel sources, file 'hid-ids.h' from:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/linux-image-extra-3.7.0-3-generic

…and in a grep of the 'hid-apple.ko' module binary from:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/raring/+package/linux-image-
extra-3.7.0-3-generic

However, it's still erroneously missing from the 12.10 kernels.

Should we file a new bug requesting a SRU, or convert this one into a
SRU? If so, how? If not, will this be fixed before 13.04 is released?

[Bug 1062647] Re: eSATA failure with JMicron JMB321 - PMP product ID mismatch

2012-10-10 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Hi Joseph,

I opened an upstream bug report using the instructions are on the wiki
page you linked. However, I received a sort of bounce message from
Launchpad in response to my CC to 1062...@bugs.launchpad.net:

=
Subject: Submit Request Failure
An error occurred while processing a mail you sent to Launchpad's email
interface.

Error message:

The message you sent included commands to modify the bug report, but you didn't
sign the message with an OpenPGP key that is registered in Launchpad.

I don't know if this was to be expected. Perhaps the wiki page needs to
be updated.

[Bug 1062647] Re: eSATA failure - PMP product ID mismatch

2012-10-09 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Hi Joseph,

The mainline 3.6 kernel:

$ uname -a
Linux khaeru-desktop 3.6.0-030600-generic #201209302035 SMP Mon Oct 1 00:36:01
UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

…does not fix this bug. The symptoms are identical. I attach a new dmesg
with log data from when I turn on the enclosure ( 171.722016 to
207.065893) and then turn it off (218.877500 to 219.598771).

Extra information: the PCI ID 0x197b:0x0325 seems to correspond to the
device's JMicron JMB321 chip
(http://www.jmicron.com/Product_JMB321.htm). The log output indicates
15 ports, but the device has only 4 bays for SATA drives. The JMB321
specs indicate the chip has 15 GPIOs.

[Bug 1062647] [NEW] eSATA failure - PMP product ID mismatch

2012-10-05 Thread Paul Kishimoto

[Bug 1053725] Re: Cannot connect to Facebook

2012-09-26 Thread Paul Kishimoto
After installing gnome-control-center-signon (which was not installed on
the upgrade to 12.10 beta), the symptoms have changed slightly, but I am
still unable to connect to a Facebook account. The single signon dialog
within g-c-c instead gives me the error message:

An error occurred while loading the authentication page.

Once or twice when I have tried to connect, I get a message from
Facebook (via a browser) stating:

An unauthorized device recently attempted to access your account, let us
know if it was you.

…this leads me to think the failure to connect may have to do with
Facebook's device notifications feature.

** Also affects: gnome-control-center-signon (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1055497] [NEW] Signature inserted twice when replying or forwarding

[Bug 1053725] [NEW] Cannot connect to Facebook

2012-09-20 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Public bug reported:

With Empathy running, I run 'empathy-accounts' from the terminal
(because the accounts dialog cannot be accessed from within Empathy or
from the Unity menu bar; I think that's a separate bug), I create a
Facebook account and enter my username and password.

When I click 'Apply', on the terminal appears:

** (empathy-accounts:4659): CRITICAL **:
identity_store_credentials_reply: assertion `priv-identity_info ==

After trying to connect for about a minute, the message Disconnected —
Authentication failed appears in the accounts dialog.

[Bug 938235] Re: Application needs hi-res or SVG icon

2012-06-23 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Liviu, Launchpad bugs can only be filed for software projects. For that
to work, LyX would need to be registered in Launchpad as a project
(currently it is only a package within the Ubuntu project). However,
since LyX already has its own Trac instance, this might be redundant,
and the LyX Trac might be the best place to register bugs related to the
packages in the ~lyx-devel PPA (as opposed to bugs in the official
Ubuntu LyX packages).

About the actual issue, my suggestion is to consult the packaging code used by
Ubuntu itself. This can be done by:
1. Navigate https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lyx
2. Click Code near the top
3. Choose a release, e.g. lp:ubuntu/precise/lyx
4. Click Browse the code
5. View the contents of the debian directory

I suspect that in the file lyx.desktop, the line:

Icon=lyx

…must be changed to:

Icon=lyx.svg

…or perhaps a more complete path, e.g. /usr/share/lyx/images/lyx.svg. If
I make this latter change manually on my system, Ubuntu uses the SVG
icon.

However, I'm not familiar enough with Debian/Ubuntu packaging to know
how to accomplish this automatically. At step #3 above, you can see the
names of some Ubuntu devs who have modified the packaging code for LyX
in the past. Perhaps if you contact them they can quickly explain how.

[Bug 993454] [NEW] Wrong keyboard shortcut on overlay for minimize

2012-05-02 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:
1. Press and hold 'Super'. The keyboard shortcut displays: Ctrl+Super+Down —
Restores or minimizes the current window.
2. Open a new window (any application) and maximize.
3. Press Ctrl+Super+Down. The window restores.
4. Press Ctrl+Super+Down again.

Expected:
The window minimizes.

Observed:
Nothing.

Additionally, I see on other Launchpad bugs that Ctrl+Alt+Numpad 0
minimizes windows; but this is not listed in the keyboard shortcut
overlay, and some keyboards (mine) do not have a numpad.

The net effect is that there is no discoverable keyboard shortcut to
minimize a single window.

[Bug 940603] Re: white box randomly shows up at top left corner blocking applications from using stuff under it

2012-03-12 Thread Paul Kishimoto
I get what might be a variant of this bug. A white window or box appears
covering the page display area but none of the UI in chromium.

My problem seems unrelated to either notifications or Flash; for
example, it can appear when using the Open Image in New Tab context
menu item. It always appears on the initial page load.

Despite the white box, I can Alt+Click to drag windows out of the
covered area and interact with things underneath; they're just not
visible.

Logging out, then back in is the only way to make it disappear.

Attaching two screenshots.

[Bug 911064] Re: Apple Bluetooth Keyboard Fn key not working

2012-03-12 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Changing tags in the hope that this comes to the attention of Ubuntu
devs…

Installing the mainline 3.3-rc7 kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.3-rc7-precise/ does NOT fix the problem.

However, again, the device ID is in the Linux kernel repository for the same
tag:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=blob;f=drivers/hid/hid-ids.h;hb=HEAD#l131

For some reason, the driver in the mainline kernel PPA does not include
the device ID.

[Bug 938448] Re: On multi-monitor, mouse gets stuck in the middle, especially going right to left

2012-03-02 Thread Paul Kishimoto
I've upgraded to Precise on a second machine, and the problem seems less
acute.

The difference is that this computer has a mouse with high sensitivity.
If I approach the monitor border very quickly, the cursor passes through
without getting stuck.

Using the trackball I have on my other system, it's very difficult to
move the cursor that quickly, so it almost always gets stuck.

So it seems there *is* a threshold velocity for this behaviour, but it
has been set too high. Either it should be lowered, or made
configurable.

Simply increasing the trackball sensitivity to avoid this new feature is
not a solution.

[Bug 911064] Re: Apple Bluetooth Keyboard Fn key not working

2012-01-27 Thread Paul Kishimoto
@Brian: I'm not a kernel developer, so I'm not sure either.

Here's what I did to find it: Go to http://kernel.org. On the line by stable:
3.0.18, click Gitweb. Click tree at the top of the page, then browse to
drivers/hid/hid-ids.h; the device ID is visible. For comparison:
$ cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 3.0.0-15.26-generic 3.0.13

So I guess it was introduced sometime between kernel version 3.0.14 and
3.0.18 inclusive. But I have no idea how/on what schedule the Ubuntu
kernel for 11.10 is updated from the one on kernel.org.

Since this is a simple fix, only a few lines, I hope one of the Ubuntu
devs could cherry-pick it, if they happen to look at this bug. Worst
case: no one will, and the fix will come in the 3.2 kernel when Ubuntu
12.04 is released.

drivers/hid/hid-apple.c in the linux source.

It seems like it would be simple to fix, but I don't know how / don't
have time to learn how to prepare a kernel patch.

[Bug 835531] Re: Fn key not working on Apple Wireless Keyboard (Lion version)

2012-01-12 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Hi all — can you check if this is the same bug as #911064? Run 'hidd'
and see if the device ID given is [05ac:0255].

If so, please mark this bug as a duplicate and indicate you are affected
by the other one, so we can get a fix sooner.

[Bug 913601] [NEW] 'fn' key not functional on Apple wireless keyboard

2012-01-08 Thread Paul Kishimoto
Public bug reported:

I have a brand-new wireless Apple wireless keyboard, connected using
Bluetooth.

Some of the f-keys on this keyboard apparently have additional functions:
F1: decrease brightness
F2: increase brightness
F3: ?
F4: ?
F7: previous track
F8: play/pause
F9: next track
F10: mute
F11: decrease volume
F12: increase volume

In addition, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AppleKeyboard indicates
that Insert, Delete, PageUp, PageDown, Home and End should be available
through using 'fn' with other keys.

None of these appear to work. Pressing 'fn' with any other key is
identical to pressing that key on its own. Using 'xev' confirms this.

I also notice that the kernel module hid_apple is not loaded when my
keyboard is connected.

There seem to be other bug reports (e.g. bug #227501, bug #499013) which
report new versions of Apple peripherals having new device IDs, which
prevent Ubuntu from configuring them properly when they are connected.
In some cases the fix seems to be a custom kernel (!) or kernel patch. I
don't know if this is the issue here. Please let me know what additional
information or testing I can provide to help fix this bug.
