[Bug 1738515] Re: [Precision 5510, Realtek ALC3266, Black Speaker, Internal] No sound at all after plugging in headphones

2018-10-24 Thread Paul Williams
I have upgraded to Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) and I am experiencing the same
problem. I don't have permission to change the bug status, should I
submit another bug report?

[Bug 1738515] [NEW] [Precision 5510, Realtek ALC3266, Black Speaker, Internal] No sound at all after plugging in headphones

2017-12-15 Thread Paul Williams
Public bug reported:

Sound worked before, but after plugging in headphones, sound does not work
through either headphones or internal speakers. Sound continues not to work
after unplugging headphones.
I tried:
1. killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.config/pulse/* ; rm -r ~/.pulse*
2. wait 10 seconds
3. reboot

Then sound worked in internal speakers, but when I plugged in
headphones, I got the same result. I tested the sound using "Test
Speakers" in Settings, and by playing youtube videos in Firefox.

[Bug 1048250] Re: unity desktop becomes unusable after 1 hour

2012-09-25 Thread Paul Williams
The problem seems to have been caused by the "/" partition becoming unmounted.
Tested disk(crucial M4 SSD 128GB) using "partition magic" and found nothing
wrong.
I've reinstalled ubuntu using and identical disk and so far everything works so
closing bug.

[Bug 1048250] Re: unity desktop becomes unusable after 1 hour

2012-09-13 Thread Paul Williams
** Description changed:

After installing the last updates available via update manager (7th Sept) the
unity desktop has become very unstable.
It becomes unusable after an hour of use from reboot.
- Initial manifestation is that I can't start any new applications, then
pressing the "alt" key causes unity to freeze.
+ Initial manifestation is that I can't start any new applications, then
pressing the "alt" key causes unity to freeze.
I loose the min/max controls on each window and keyboard stops functioning so
can't do restart from a terminal and forced to do reboot.
Before above happens I can 't start any applications either from sidebar or
alt/F2
-
- This is a show stopper for me as I have to reboot every hour.

I can reproduce this state by running the command "unity" from the a
terminal and then ctrl/c out of it. So it seems that unity crashes ? but
does not get restarted(as I don't get dumped back to a login screen).

[Bug 1048250] Re: unity desktop becomes unusable after 1 hour

2012-09-13 Thread Paul Williams
** Description changed:

After installing the last updates available via update manager (7th Sept) the
unity desktop has become very unstable.
- It becomes unusable after an hour of use from reboot. I loose the min/max
controls on each window and keyboard stops functioning so can't do restart from
a terminal and forced to do reboot. The alt key seems to trigger this state.
-
- Also coming back from a suspend I do not get a password dialogue so am forced
to reboot.
+ It becomes unusable after an hour of use from reboot.
+ Initial manifestation is that I can't start any new applications, then
pressing the "alt" key causes unity to freeze.
+ I loose the min/max controls on each window and keyboard stops functioning so
can't do restart from a terminal and forced to do reboot.
Before above happens I can 't start any applications either from sidebar or
alt/F2

This is a show stopper for me as I have to reboot every hour.
+
+ I can reproduce this state by running the command "unity" from the a
+ terminal and then ctrl/c out of it. So it seems that unity crashes ? but
+ does not get restarted(as I don't get dumped back to a login screen).
+

[Bug 900594] Re: Wireless Key On Compaq C57 Displays False Blue Light

2011-12-08 Thread Paul Williams
This is the fix which brings a person from New Install with updates to
the wifi working with the blue light on constant. It is from my ongoing
thread on the CQ57 here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1886539

echo "blacklist hp_wmi" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-hp.conf

Not sure what else to write. We have an untainted chain from USB
Installer of 11.10, to Update Manager, to this set of commands. No
other programs running right now so I am gonna go ahead and install my
normal bells and whistles and leave this in y'alls capable hands.

So, with a fresh install and all updates the red light remains on and NO
wifi whatsoever. I will now implement the commands which allowed for
the wifi to connect and post them later this evening.

[Bug 900594] Re: Wireless Key On Compaq C57 Displays False Blue Light

2011-12-08 Thread Paul Williams
apport information

** Description changed:

Here's the deal: The f12 key is the wireless key on the CQ57.
Regardless whether the wireless is on or off the blue key stays on which
contributed to the below thread. I feel this is an issue as until I ran
rfkill list I didn't have a clue and then I had to continue to
troubleshoot until I realized that the blue light was giving a false
  reading.

[Bug 900594] Re: Wireless Key On Compaq C57 Displays False Blue Light

2011-12-06 Thread Paul Williams
Ok, here's how it goes: I dumped 12.04 onto USB and fired it up off of
USB. Now, other than the purple screen, the Man, the Wireless Icon and
System nothing happened other than asking me if I wanted to install or
run off disk. I checked English and ran off disk.

The red light was constant when I was not online and the blue light was
on when I was online. I cycled this three (03) or (04) times with the
same results. I never accessed the Internet, though, as all it did was
sync my wireless device, but as I know the name and had to enter the
password I presume it is doing what it is supposed to.

What I would respectfully request, as I have taken the time to do all
this, is an explanation IN LAYMAN'S terms, how to take the piece from
12.04 and put it on my system and make it stay throughout updates. Fair
trade off I believe.

If y'all need other stuff done let me know. I will be gone from 1630EST
- 1930EST +/- and will check back then.

[Bug 900594] Re: Wireless Key On Compaq C57 Displays False Blue Light

2011-12-06 Thread Paul Williams
So, I don't know how to download and run the specific kernel you want.
I am able, though, to create a live CD of 12.04 located here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/precise/alpha-1/ I selected the PC
(Intel x86) iso and will burn it with Unetbootin. Please advise if this
is ok. I simply am not a programmer and most of this is greek to me; I
don't mind helping I just don't know how to do what you want.

Sure, I don't mind, but I haven't a clue how to install it. If you send
me a link to go read on how to do it I will!

Here's the deal: The f12 key is the wireless key on the CQ57.
Regardless whether the wireless is on or off the blue key stays on which
contributed to the below thread. I feel this is an issue as until I ran

[Bug 900594] [NEW] Wireless Key On Compaq C57 Displays False Blue Light

2011-12-05 Thread Paul Williams
Public bug reported:

Here's the deal: The f12 key is the wireless key on the CQ57.
Regardless whether the wireless is on or off the blue key stays on which
contributed to the below thread. I feel this is an issue as until I ran
rfkill list I didn't have a clue and then I had to continue to
troubleshoot until I realized that the blue light was giving a false
reading.

[Bug 438488] Re: USB Devices only recognised on startup

2010-01-01 Thread Paul Williams
I am surprised to read that there is only one report about this bug. I
have loaded Ubuntu 9.10 on to a refurbished IBM ThinkCentre. I have the
same problem as does other people trying to load Ubuntu 9.10 on this
product. I Googled the problem.

I found that a single devise (memory stick) attached to a USB port
would work after i invoked lsusb from a terminal window. This info came
from other people with the problem.

However when I attached my HP Deskjet 6940 it worked fine but nothing
else worked when I tried the memory stick.

A complete restart would not start more than two devises attached to USB
ports. During the restart I saw what appeared to be error messages
before the login screen. Could not read then all. I think that there
was an error #17

Hope that this will help.

Paul.

[Bug 77675] Re: apache2-ssl-certificate has gone missing in feisty

2007-03-11 Thread Paul Williams
Confirmed, and marked as confirmed.
This is critical for people that need SSL on their servers.
Of course there are other ways to generate ssl cert files, but this is by far
the easiest.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 72018 ***

Well that's fairly annoying. Subscriptions should be carried over to the
master bug when a person is subscribed to a dupe.

[Bug 90968] Re: Gaim Dbus Plugin Does Not Load

2007-03-09 Thread Paul Williams
OK, I am going crazy today. Sorry for all the comments.
The bug is still open, and the dbus plugin is included in the main gaim package.
However, I cannot consistently reproduce this bug.
It seems be affected by the gnome-session, because it only happens when I
choose certain sessions from the GDM login window. I will add more info next
time I reboot/restart X

I don't think he has to disable the driver. He can just uncomment line
48 of /usr/bin/soffice like so:

(46)# Uncomment the below line if you suspect that OpenGL is not
(47)# working on your system.
(48)export SAL_NOOPENGL=true;
