[Bug 942869] [NEW] Causes Canon scanners to crash

2012-02-28 Thread PaulW
Public bug reported:

After having difficulty getting my Canon LiDE 50 to work under Ubuntu

http://us.generation-nt.com/answer/bug-647234-libsane-scanner-canon-
lide-50-not-recognized-help-205275591.html

Removing libmtp soved the issue but causes problems as some VLC plug-ins
depend on it. After re-installing and a bit more investigation it seems
only libmtp-runtime causes the problem. I haven't seen any side effects
yet from having uninstalled just the libmtp-runtime.

[Bug 682287] Re: Black Screen at Start

2011-06-10 Thread PaulW
Bit of playing... From what I can make out, DPMS isn't being set on, or
is being ignored on some boots by the driver.

If I ssh into the laptop (while screen is off) and issue:

#sudo vbetool dpms on

the screen then turns on.

As a quick&dirty fix for this, I did the following:

Edit the file

/etc/gdm/Init/Default

Scroll to the bottom of the file, and before the line "exit 0" and after
the last "fi" entry, add:

 /usr/sbin/vbetool dpms on

Save and exit, reboot.

Seems to work fine now, I've done about a dozen or so reboots, each time
the display comes on as it's supposed to do!

Exactly the same issue as me, running 11.04 (Natty) on an Aspire 3500.

[Bug 493645] [NEW] Xorg has default screen blanking value set to 600secs

2009-12-07 Thread PaulW
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Xorg appears to have (hardcoded) a default timeout for blanking the
screen, set to 600 seconds (10 minutes)

If the user tries to disable the screen blanking using gnome-power-
manager (all timeouts disabled, no screen turn off) aswell as the
screensaver being disabled, the screen will go blank after 10 minutes
regardless of the setting.

If you set the blank screen timeout to less than ten minutes, then this
setting is used.

The following is returned when running # xset -q

-
Screen Saver:
  prefer blanking: yesallow exposures: yes
  timeout: 600cycle: 600
-

Again, timeout is set at 600 regardless what the user configures within
gnome.

Adding the following to the xorg.conf file solves this issue:

-
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "BlankTime" "0"
Option "StandbyTime" "0"
Option "SuspendTime" "0"
Option "OffTime" "0"
EndSection
-

Upon restarting gdm (logout to restart X), the values retrieved by #
xset -q are now correct

-
Screen Saver:
  prefer blanking: yesallow exposures: yes
  timeout: 0cycle: 600
-

Now, the screen will not blank after a default of 10 minutes.

This occurs on both amd64 based installs of Karmic 9.10 at my current
location. I've also noticed quite a few threads on ubuntuforums which
are also describing the same issue, but with no resolve.

Can the timeout be set during the compilation of the xorg package? Or
will it require constant modification of xorg.conf file to sort this
issue? (not the best idea for novice users)

[Bug 486985] Re: GNOME power manager doesn't respect "Put display to sleep when inactive for" setting

2009-11-23 Thread PaulW
Same issue with me on my laptop. Regardless of how I configure it,
after 5 minutes of activity with the power plugged in or running on
battery, the screen blanks.

I have tried killing gnome-power-manager, same issue. Re-launching after kill,
same issue.
Screensaver is completely turned off, same issue.

This is becoming quite an annoyance, especially when watching films. I
don't want to keep getting up every 5 minutes just to move the mouse to
reactivate the display.

[Bug 444518] Re: X crashed with SIGSEGV in libfb.so(fbBlt+0xa2b)

2009-10-29 Thread PaulW
This is also affecting me with exactly the same issues. Regardless also
if desktop effects are enabled or not. I have attached the various
crash reports and logs, alas... I'm unsure what other attachments will
prove useful (this is my parents laptop)

[Bug 457221] [NEW] cups-pdf always classed as OBSOLETE and removed during update-manager process.

2009-10-21 Thread PaulW
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups-pdf

Whenever I run update-manager, after it has completed and it prompts me
about removing any obsolete packages, cups-pdf is always listed and
removed. I then have to manually re-install cups-pdf package each and
every time after an update.

[Bug 425160] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV in glXBindTexImageEXT()

In response to Travis Watkins...

This seems to be happening to me too, but under mutter...

Happens quite regularly too, so I'm guessing its something the nvidia
driver is having issues with in regards to compositing...

[Bug 447696] Re: grub.cfg not getting updated

2009-10-10 Thread PaulW
I had this issue with mine, resolved today.

A previous update re-installed grub-legacy yet did not update the
bootloader. Thus, grub2 was still the loader, but grub-legacy was only
updating /boot/grub/menu.lst

Solution for me was to follow through the grub2 installation guide on
the ubuntu wiki

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Grub2

Also, instead or removing the old grub-legacy files, move them to be
safe until you are sure they are no longer needed.

mkdir ~/old-grub
sudo mv /boot/grub/menu.lst* ~/old-grub

Done

[Bug 435590] Re: Please update cairo-dock-plug-ins to 2.0.9 version

2009-10-05 Thread PaulW
Question...

I ran an update today, and cairo-dock and cairo-dock-core packages were
updated to 2.0.9. cairo-dock-plugins was retained at 2.0.8.

I previously had some plugins enabled (visual stuff) aswell as cpu,
memory and netspeed monitors...

Since the update, the plugins have "disappeared" and the Accessories,
Desktop, Controlers and Plug-ins sections are now completely empty...

Behaviour contains - Position, Accessibility, TaskBar, System, Help
Appearance contains - Background, Labels, Icons, Views, Dialogues, Desklets,
Indicators

Is it because the cairo-dock-plug-ins, cairo-dock-plug-ins-data and
cairo-dock-plug-ins-integration packages are still at 2.0.8.2 that this
problem now occurs?? I've tried purging all previous configs for cairo,
but no luck...

Thanks

[Bug 417555] [NEW] [Acer Aspire 7720] late resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-08-22 Thread PaulW
Public bug reported:

Trying to hibernate when system is installed on software RAID causes
failure when trying to resume. Normal software suspend does work, but
suspend to disk (hibernate) fails.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous hibernate and prevented it from
resuming properly. The resume processing hung very near the end and will have
appeared to have completed normally.
