[Bug 1802146] [NEW] OpenSMTPD crashes after upgrade to 18.04.1 LTS

2018-11-07 Thread Pavneet Arora
Public bug reported:

I had a stable 16.04 server running OpenSMTPD. Recently upgraded to
18.04.1 LTS, and smtpd would crash repeatedly with each outbound email
attempt.

Logged this as an issue on github.com/OpenSMTPD/OpenSMTPD. After a
great deal of assisted investigation, the problem was traced to
crypt_checkpass.c for which a patch has already been made and merged
back into the main branch.

In order to get back into production I have used the package source and
replaced crypt_checkpass.c with the updated one. The full recipe for
getting our server back into production may be found here:

https://github.com/OpenSMTPD/OpenSMTPD/issues/888#issuecomment-436686749

I would classify this as *URGENT* as it renders mail servers using
OpenSMTPD on the latest stable unusable.

[Bug 1306849] Re: Printing error

2016-06-23 Thread Pavneet Arora
Same problem as others have listed above. 15.10. Brother HL-5370DW
connected via network suddenly started spitting out on most (but not
all) webpages printed from Firefox:

ERROR NAME;
stackunderflow
COMMAND;
pop
OPERAND STACK;

Tried switching driver to "Brother HL-5370DW Foomatic/Postscript" as
suggested above, but same errors.

Finally, I noticed that the Brother support site list:

- Generic LPR printer driver (deb package)
- Generic CUPSwrapper printer driver (deb package)

dated 20 Jun 2014. Installed these, and I can once again print!

These show up under http:localhost:631/printers/ as:

- Brother BrGenML1 for CUPS (grayscale, 2-sided printing)

HTH.

[Bug 1024578] Re: Problem printing custom page sizes with lp after upgrading to 12.04

2013-01-14 Thread Pavneet Arora
Okay, found an HP printer: LaserJet Pro 200 Color to test with. Driver
is HPLIP. Tried the same lp command as I have outlined above:

lp -o PageSize=Custom.2.75x6.25in -o landscape -d HP-LaserJet-200-color-
MFP-M276NW-4267

The small cheque printed out horizontally centred, but with the trail
edge first: in essence what we had working with the Brother printers
successfully until 12.04, except that the image is rotated 180 degrees.
So it would be workable, except that this printer doesn't handle forms
that small :(. Sigh.

Brother drivers haven't changed since 2009, so what else has changed?

[Bug 1024578] Re: Problem printing custom page sizes with lp after upgrading to 12.04

2012-12-09 Thread Pavneet Arora
Dave, thanks for adjusting the bug status.

Regrettably I am unable to test with HP printers locally. One of the
reasons we switched to Brother was their support for Linux. We use both
the HL-5370DW for business printing, albeit with several different
custom sizes, and the MFC-6490CW for colour architectural prints up to
11x17. However, the Brother Linux drivers havn't changed since 2009,
and so I should think that it is something upstream that changed. The
best that I can guess is that stock page size, i.e., US Letter, is
somehow overriding the custom page directive from lp, and then too, the
offsets are being incorrectly calculated.

I will do my best to find a test bed for an HP printer, and report back.

As you can probably surmise from my past bug reports all relating to
custom page sizes breaking in new releases, it would be great if we
might include this as part of the general test suite for cups even
keeping in mind the changes that I am hearing about in version 1.6?

Regards.

[Bug 1087980] [NEW] Bug #1024578 related to custom page sizes continues to persist in latest updates to 12.04

2012-12-08 Thread Pavneet Arora
Public bug reported:

I had originally report this bug on 13 Jul 2012, and after posting the
PPDs and log information I have seen no acknowledgement of the bug nor a
change in its status from Incomplete. So I have dutifully been updating
the OS, and doing our custom page size printing from Windows, which has
made a mess of our workflow.

I have also enquired a few times under the bug tracking entry as to its
status but have received no reply.

Since the bug also seems to be in a perpetual state of aging out of the
system due to inactivity, I am posting again as a new bug to see if this
might be resolved.

After doing some research with my limited ability to penetrate the
printing system, it would seem to me that the offsets of the printed
page, which were being calculated properly in recent versions up to
12.04, i.e., aligning the printed page centred on the leading edge of
the pager, have gone off the rails. They are now left-aligned on the
trailing edge or sometimes completely centred on the media.

If there is another way to take the bug off the Incomplete list, I would
welcome the pointers. It is just that after 5 months, I am not sure
what else I can do.

advTHANKSance.

[Bug 1024578] Re: Problem printing custom page sizes with lp after upgrading to 12.04

2012-11-20 Thread Pavneet Arora
I am enclosing a copy of the relevant parts of /var/log/cups/error_log.

Reading lines 76-95, I notice that the BoundingBox is given correctly
(216x360), but the Page is given (on line 76) as 612x792 even though the
PageSize option (in line 24) is given to be Custom.3.0x5.0in.

Does this help at all in isolating the problem?

This bug has almost expired due to lack of activity. I am wondering why
it is still marked incomplete?  This seems to me to be a critical issue;
at least in a publishing workflow like we have setup. And it seems to
creep back with subsequent releases to Ubuntu. Can we please confirm?

The -o landscape is significant because the cheque is fed that way into

[Bug 1024578] [NEW] Problem printing custom page sizes with lp after upgrading to 12.04

2012-07-13 Thread Pavneet Arora
Public bug reported:

I have a workflow generating PDFs using LaTeX and ConTeXt on custom
pages sizes. For instance I will print index cards, personal and
corporate cheques, etc. The printers in question (right now) are a
Brother HL-5370DW and a Brother MFC-6490CW, but in the past have been
various HP laser printers.

This workflow has been stable through several recent versions of
Ubuntu. Upon upgrading to 12.04, the workflow has broken for me.

Initially, I reported this to Linux Support at Brother, but they have
thrown it back saying that it isn't their issue. For instance, on
initial upgrade I faced this issue:

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/faq_prn.html#f00110

However, this was resolved on my installation by updating my
installation. I was using Avery labels and printing them via an MS-
Office document from within LibreOffice. This had worked for years.

I am enclosing with this report a (sample) personal cheque, and because
I am only allowed a single attachment, in a follow-up a sample outline
set on an index card, which exhibit slightly different behaviour.

SAMPLE PERSONAL CHEQUE:

The command I have used to date to print this is:

lp -o media=letter -o PageSize=Custom.2.75x6.25in -o landscape

The expected behaviour is that a cheque fed through with the guide arms
brought in will be printed as a centre fed page with the printing
starting at the leading edge of the page. The behaviour that I am now
getting is that printing is centred on a letter-sized page. It makes no
difference if I remove the 'media=letter' option.

INDEX CARD:

The command I have used to date to print this is:

lp -o media=letter -o PageSize=Custom.3.0x5.0in -o portrait

The expected behaviour is that a cheque fed through with the guide arms
brought in will be printed as a centre fed page with the printing
starting at the leading edge of the page. The behaviour that I am now
getting is that printing is done on the bottom left hand side of the a
letter-sized page. Again, it makes no difference if I remove the
'media=letter' option.

Any help would be most appreciated.

advTHANKSance.

[Bug 539242] [NEW] PageSize=Custom is broken (again) for cups/foo2zjs/foomatic-filters

2010-03-15 Thread Pavneet Arora
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: foomatic-filters

I previously repeated a bug relating to printing with Custom PageSize
option when upgrading from Hardy to Jaunty. This was resolved
previously:

https://launchpad.net/bugs/338999

Recently, I did a fresh Karmic install on a new machine. First off,
like many I suffered through trying to get the machine and printer to
talk to each other via USB. Lots of booting with printer off, and then
plugging in USB cables, etc. I am not sure why this continues to be a
source of consternation. With Hardy, things just worked for me.
Finally, I did the following:

0. Installed foo2zjs. Printer was sometimes recognized, but other times not
after computer was restarted. Even when recognized enough to create a queue,
print jobs would just stay in the queue with the Processing - printer not
connected type of messages. Has there ever been a concrete resolution to
this? USB printing seems to have gone off the rails whereas before with Hardy
it was solid for us at least.
lsusb sometimes wouldn't show the printer, and sometimes would.

1. Blacklisted 'usblp' via adding /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-cups.conf.
No luck with Test Pages being printed.

2. Finally decided to try hplip even though we have been using foo2zjs
since Hardy. Initially same kinds of behaviour. Ran hp-check -t. This
revealed lots of missing dependencies. I thought Synaptic would have
taken care of these. I followed the instructions and then installed
them. Installed hp-plugin manually. All of a sudden I could print Test
Pages. OK, I thought that I'll forgo foo2zjs which I have been using
forever if hplip lets me get productive. No luck. Our business depends
on custom page sizes for all kinds of forms: cheque runs, envelopes,
project plans, scheduling calendars, etc. But none of our workflow
printing worked. We rely almost exclusively on the '-o
PageSize=Custom.N.NNxN.NNin' option. We create all of our documents
using TeXLive.

3. Figured that maybe it was an hplip thing, so did a complete removal
of hplip through Synaptic Package Manager and reinstalled foo2zjs. Same
symptoms. We can print from evince and lp but only if we don't use the
PageSize option. Otherwise print jobs appear on the queue and then
indicate as being stopped.

Actually, one of our machines which was upgraded to Karmic was working
until recently so I wonder if cups has broken (again) since it stopped
working.

I am enclosing a sample pdf file and the relevant portion of
/var/log/cups/error_log for the job printed from the command line using
the command:

lp -o media=letter -o PageSize=Custom.2.75x6.25in -o landscape knuth.pdf

This normally should print the output on a small cheque being fed in
landscape mode.

Many thanks for any help. For us this is a critical issue, and it seems
to have resurfaced.

[Bug 539242] Re: PageSize=Custom is broken (again) for cups/foo2zjs/foomatic-filters

2010-03-15 Thread Pavneet Arora
This has been fixed in foo2zjs as of 7 Mar 2010. Please see the thread
at:

http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/forum/read.php?7,2544

It seems that Rick Richardson has adjusted foo2zjs for differing
versions of cups. Bottom line is to use the version from Rick directly
rather than the distro's.

Regards.

[Bug 338999] Re: Custom PageSize has broken with lp/foo2zjs after upgrade to 8.10

2010-03-11 Thread Pavneet Arora
Well, I am back with similar problems. I have just installed Karmic on
a brand new machine. I am suffering through the usual assortment of USB
printer issues where jobs are queued but don't get beyond processing. I
have tried both hplip and foo2zjs. Well, I managed to get Test Pages
printing now, but only for letter size jobs. Running lp with the -o
PageSize=Custom... ends up with a foomatic-rip failed message in the
Printer Configuration dialogue.

Any help would be really appreciated. I am dependent on custom page
sizes for most of my printing needs.

Many thanks.

SUCCESS! I upgraded to Jaunty overnight and this morning things are
working at first glance. I will upgrade the rest of the machines and do
more thorough testing to ensure that I haven't missed anything.

Thanks so much to everyone for getting this fixed.

With warm regards.

2009-04-17 Thread Pavneet Arora
Approximate actual printed size of image is 2.625 W x 1.25 H
(landscape). This is approximately 6.25cm x 2.75cm. Note the
similarity to the desired size, which is is 6.25in W x 2.75in H
(landscape). I wonder if the units aren't being passed through.

I must have typed the incorrect command for that particular attempt.
This command is for a No. Envelope which also uses the custom page size.
I am enclosing a new log and scan of the resulting output here for
review. No change in behaviour at my end (the scaling is the remaining
issue; the image is being positioned correctly on the media).

Re: [Bug 338999] Re: Custom PageSize has broken with lp/foo2zjs after upgrade to 8.10

2009-04-16 Thread Pavneet Arora
Dear Till,

Yes I am still having problems. The image is centred and located
properly at the leading edge of the media. It is just that it is scaled
down to a tiny size. Size to fit doesn't affect it, and in any case I
don't want sizing to happen since the LaTeX position commands rely on
precise positioning of fields on the forms.

I'll give your suggestion a try and report back.

Thanks.

No luck at my end, I'm afraid. I installed foo2zjs from -proposed (in

since they encompassed cups*). Behaviour hasn't changed. I must be
missing something obvious.

landscape knuth.pdf
request id is HP-LaserJet-1020-532 (1 file(s))

Enclosed. Doesn't seem to have any line with [l|L]etter.

Also, just another data point: I had a chance to test this anomaly on
another system that was also upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 and has a
LaserJet 1020 attached to it, and it has identical behaviour so I don't
think it is specific to this particular workstation.
