[Bug 1943853] Re: Ubuntu update disconnected all snaps

2021-09-22 Thread Paweł Stołowski
To summarize, there are two issues:
1. snaps were not mounted on restart for some reason
2. this lead to loosing all auto-connected interfaces on snapd start (because
snap.yaml files couldn't be read from disk)

The cause of problem #1 is unknown and we had a couple of reports about
this in the past. Snaps are automatically mounted by systemd mount units
on boot, so why this didn't work is unclear.

For problem #2 I've proposed a fix here:
https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/pull/10814 and with it connections
should be preserved on such failures.

[Bug 1943853] Re: Recent update DELETED SNAP PROGRAMS

2021-09-18 Thread Paweł Stołowski
Ah, what I suggested in comment #18 would only re-create "system"
connections (such as desktop, audio-playback etc) provided by snapd, but
the other problem is with gnome-3-28-1804 and gtk-common-themes content
provider slots. For those, removing and installing them back should re-
create their auto-connections, so try this:

$ snap remove gnome-3-28-1804
$ snap remove gtk-common-themes
$ snap install gnome-3-28-1804
$ snap install gtk-common-themes

As for the actual root cause, I fear it will be very hard to understand
what went wrong without "snap changes", which unfortunately got pruned
already.

2021-04-15 Thread Paweł Stołowski
@Luna what was the fix, can you link to the respective change? I'm still
seeing the problem with up-to-date 21.04 (and there were no updates
reported for zfs-linux; was it actually released)?

The tentative fix for snapd hasn't been commited yet in snapd; if the
problem was fixed elsewhere then we won't need snapd fix; therefore I'm
marking this back to "in progress" in snapd and it should be set
"invalid" if not needed in snapd.

[Bug 1922293] Re: Snaps appear broken on 21.04 Beta

2021-04-06 Thread Paweł Stołowski
Thanks for reporting, reproduced, the problem is indeed strictly ZFS-
related and appears to be related to a number of zfs-related services
and mount units that need to be ready before mount units for snaps can
be executed during boot, otherwise snap blobs under
/var/lib/snapd/snaps/* cannot be accessed and mounted.

Sample log entries:

kwi 06 12:44:18 pawel-virtual-machine systemd[1]: Failed to mount Mount unit
for gnome-3-34-1804, revision 66.
kwi 06 12:44:18 pawel-virtual-machine mount[803]: mount:
/snap/gtk-common-themes/1514: special device
/var/lib/snapd/snaps/gtk-common-themes_1514.snap does not exist.
kwi 06 12:44:18 pawel-virtual-machine mount[804]: mount: /snap/snap-store/518:
special device /var/lib/snapd/snaps/snap-store_518.snap does not exist.
kwi 06 12:44:18 pawel-virtual-machine mount[802]: mount: /snap/gnome-3-34

It seems that adding "After=zfs-mount.service" to snap .mount units
solves it, but the fix needs to be applied in snapd that generates them
as any manual changes to these files will eventually get lost anyway
(also, someone with better understanding of zfs should confirm such fix
is correct).

(as for Wayland issues, let's please not mix it in here, please open a
separate bug report if needed, possibly adding ubuntu-desktop to it).

[Bug 1902915] Re: snapd doesn't ensure portals are available even when they are needed

2021-01-12 Thread Paweł Stołowski
I understand this can be confusing, but I'm not sure snapd should be in
the business of warning about missing desktop components or dbus
services of the given interface.

Snapd's desktop interface, as other snapd interfaces, grants access to
dozens of resources/subsystems, some of which may not be relevant for
some snaps, snapd doesn't have a way of knowing that. I think a solution
to this would be a warning/popup implemented by desktop launcher script
of thunderbird snap, it knows what's required for proper functioning of
the snap (and can use snapctl is-connected for preliminary check,
combined with runtime checks of actual services it needs).

$ snap remove hello-world

The problem is only affecting groovy and it appears to be fixed with

but hasn't been released in stable yet; the fix is included in snapd

[Bug 1868706] Re: Snapd postinst script hangs

2020-03-26 Thread Paweł Stołowski
Ok, reproduced with focal and broken seeds from an older image, symptoms
are exactly the same (including ps/pstree output). The problem is caused
by blocking on snapd.seeded.service (which waits for seeding to
complete, but it's never going to complete with broken seeds).

Given that this is an edge case (we don't expect images with broken
seeds) and focal images have been fixed already, I'm lowering the
priority. We will discuss what to do to handle this gracefully.

@Mark does 'snap changes' (and then 'snap change ' if you see any
failed changes) reveal antyhing interesing? Some of the older focal
images had broken seeds that would never succeed, potentially causing
other issues.

[Bug 1860324] Re: snapd crashed and can't start: "Re-refresh task has 1 tasks waiting for it"

2020-01-20 Thread Paweł Stołowski
I had a quick look and it seems that UpdateWithDeviceContext can append
"snap-switch-channel" to taskset from doUpdate(), which means a task
gets scheduled after "check-rerefresh" (which panics if it finds any
tasks waiting for it). AFAIR "check-rerefresh" was meant to be the last
in the change.

[Bug 1575053] Re: Please move the "$HOME/snap" directory to a less obtrusive location

2020-01-14 Thread Paweł Stołowski
Please do not spam this bug report with meaningless comments. Comments under
bug reports should be limited to the merit and provide extra info where info is
lacking, "me too" is not really bringing anything to the discussion.
It is understood that this issue is very important for some users. Zyga
invested quite some time into investigating it, commented a couple of times and
gave extensive explanation about why this is not an easy change. This problem
is not a bug but a design decision and since it's not breaking snapd/snaps, it
has been categorized as "Wishlist"; it isn't fixed not because we ignore it,
but because our hands are full with other features, and of higher priority.

We hope for your understanding.

My initial conclusion about go-udev being the culprit was premature, the
socket closing & quit channel code looks fine after all, the problem
lies somewhere else and may be something in the go runtime stack and
it's very unclear for the time being.

[Bug 1824162] Re: /usr/lib/snapd/snapd:11:runtime:runtime:runtime:runtime:runtime

2019-10-15 Thread Paweł Stołowski
I think the bug is in the go-udev package (upstream). The Monitor()
function returns a 'quit' channel that the caller uses to stop
processing. Monitor() runs a backgroud goroutine that monitors/reads
from netlink socket and stops if quit channel is written to. I think the
problem is that the quit channel is a buffered/non-blocking channel -
writing to it and calling Close() on the netlink object right afterwards
(which we do when stopping snapd) means we might be closing the socket
and disposing the object when the background routine is reading netlink
events.

The fix should be simple, I'll look at fixing it in our source tree
(conviniently this dependency is forked under our project) and will
carry the fix upstream.

[Bug 1824770] [NEW] Installer should copy fontconfig cache to the installed system

2019-04-15 Thread Paweł Stołowski
Public bug reported:

After the installation completes, fontconfig cache files
(/var/cache/fontconfig) should be copied from the live CD session to the
just installed system, before reboot.

The rationale:

Snapd creates fontconfig cache files (/var/cache/fontconfig) for
fontconfig cache format v6 and v7 (this is done by snapd to
significantly reduce startup time for snaps that may use one of the two
formats). This is a one-time operation that can take as much as ~20
seconds; it's performed on the live CD session as it runs snapd, but
since the newly installed system has empty /var/cache/fontconfig after
first boot, it needs to be repeated by snapd. This affects first boot
experience as it has impact on readiness of snapd and snap for normal
usage. Observed with 19.04 installs.

[Bug 1798450] Re: [snap] File dialogs show snap's home directory instead of user's

2018-11-29 Thread Paweł Stołowski
I don't think we want (or can) change HOME in snapd (due to undesired
consequences and breaking many snaps), it works as designed, i.e. gives
snaps dedicated areas where they can freely write data to, including
hidden files; access to real user $HOME may not even be allowed unless

[Bug 1363946] Re: unity8-dash crashed with SIGABRT in qt_message_fatal() under incorrect locale

2017-01-12 Thread Paweł Stołowski
@Daniel I see your point about Mir. Anyway, all I'm saying is this
problem manifested via
https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/bcb050f97778eb836056c1c48139bcde30ed0bcb
is completely different from the original problem described in this bug.
The only common thing is qFatal() gets called. In the original problem
it was called directly by unity8-dash in response to boost throwing
exception on incorrect locale (which was fixed by the attached MP). In
this new case this is something else in the stack calling qFatal and
aborting unity8-dash and I see no evidence of locale being involved.

To sum it up, I think it's a different bug and I don't think unity-
scopes-shell (the dash) or unity-scopes-api are responsible for this.

[Bug 1639249] Re: Result art not displayed when run in a snap

2016-11-08 Thread Paweł Stołowski
As discussed no change is needed on scopes api level. Scopes should be
using scope_directory() getter to get the base dir and then use all
assets paths relative to that; scope_directory() uses $SNAP prefix
already.

There is a problem though with thumbnailer uris, such as
image://thumbnailer/file:///snap/unity8-session/... , which do not yield
thumbnails. This might be related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/snappy/+bug/1620635

[Bug 1622423] Re: My activity child link disappears after logged in fitbit account

2016-10-03 Thread Paweł Stołowski
Ok, I was able to reproduce the issue.

I've checked unity-scopes-shell plugin with a debug branch
(https://code.launchpad.net/~stolowski/unity-scopes-shell/debug-
category-link; packages available here https://code.launchpad.net
/~unity-api-team/+archive/ubuntu/dev-build-1/+packages) and it seems to
be innocent, according to my debug the category header link is correctly
exposed to the QML (the getter for header link gets called when the
issue happens, but for some reason is not rendered). Assigning to unity8
project.

Looks like it's related to the changes to settings model made from a
separate thread (QtConcurrent is used to update child scopes).

[Bug 1492252] Re: Allow direct linking to a Preview via uri

2016-09-27 Thread Paweł Stołowski
Hi Brian, I started working on the implementation in unity-scopes-shell
at the time we discussed this, but it turned out to be more complex than
expected.

First off, the solution with preview_by_key I suggested above turned out
to be a no-go, because it was incompatible with how preview actions work
(I should have noticed it early...); so, the way to go is a
"result_for_key" method that needs to be implemented by scopes which
want to support canned queries requesting a preview.

Second off, I've some of that "new approach" implemented in the shell
plugin, but we will need changes in plugin<->shell interface too, and
for the unity8 shell side of things I need somebody from unity8 team. I
hope this will happen at some point, but this enhancement is not a
priority at the moment.

It looks like for whatever reason systemd couldn't be reached at
org.freedesktop.systemd1 on package removal... I don't think snapd
package is guilty here. Did you see it again with subsequent updates of

clear steps for reproducing it's hard to verify. Do you still have this
snap around and can re-try with the current version of snapd?

[Bug 1621098] Re: Create interface for usensord (com.canonical.usensord)

2016-09-13 Thread Paweł Stołowski
Hi Jonas. I couldn't find any documentation for this interface, I also
tried the following on krillin:

gdbus introspect --system --dest com.canonical.usensord --object-path
/com/canonical/usensord/haptic

but got:
Error: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
com.canonical.usensord was not provided by any .service files

Please provide a spec for this interface (gdbus introspect output should
be enough) or info how to get to it on krillin.
