But like I said, 3.11 fixes this (also see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1088721)

Didn't have the chance to upgrade to 6.70 yet (no windows here,
upgrading bios is always a PITA through freedos, etc)

[Bug 1094800] Re: Toshiba z930 fails to resume after second suspend on kernel =3.4

2013-01-20 Thread Pedro Alves
I did the bisect to when this started happening. So here the deal:

SYMPTOMS:

3.x - 3.3.8: All working!

3.4-rc1: rebooted automatically while resuming from suspension

3.4-rc2 - 3.8-rc2: behavior described in this report

* Change on 3.3 that caused the system to reboot while trying to resume from
first suspension:

b74f05d61b73af584d0c39121980171389ecfaaa is the first bad commit
commit b74f05d61b73af584d0c39121980171389ecfaaa
Author: Marcelo Tosatti mtosa...@redhat.com
Date: Mon Feb 13 11:07:27 2012 -0200

x86: kvmclock: abstract save/restore sched_clock_state

Upon resume from hibernation, CPU 0's hvclock area contains the old
values for system_time and tsc_timestamp. It is necessary for the
hypervisor to update these values with uptodate ones before the CPU uses
them.

Abstract TSC's save/restore sched_clock_state functions and use
restore_state to write to KVM_SYSTEM_TIME MSR, forcing an update.

Also move restore_sched_clock_state before __restore_processor_state,
since the later calls CONFIG_LOCK_STAT's lockstat_clock (also for TSC).
Thanks to Igor Mammedov for tracking it down.

Fixes suspend-to-disk with kvmclock.

* Change that fixed the reboot issue on resume from first suspension but still
caused a full lock when resuming from *second* suspend:

6742259866d03d5bc19815441ba928e8378343dc . This merge has a parent (
dba69d1092e291e257fb5673a3ad0e4c87878ebc ) that specifically states that aims
to fix an issue cased by s2ram broke due to this KVM commit: b74f05d61b73
x86: kvmclock: abstract save/restore sched_clock_state

I can try to analyze the difference between this 2 commits but I think
this is now way beyond my knowledge. What's the next steps?

[Bug 1094800] Re: Toshiba z930 fails to resume after second suspend on kernel =3.4

2013-01-18 Thread Pedro Alves
Joseph, feels kind'a silly for me to have you building kernels for me to
test, so I went ahead and did the bisect myself to save you that time.

Making a quick summary of this behavior

Kernel = 3.3 : System is able to successfully resume multiple times.
Everything works.

3.4-RC1 : System reboots while trying to resume from *first* suspend

3.4-RC2 - 3.8 (current): System recovers from first suspend, never
recovers from second suspend.

6742259866d03d5bc19815441ba928e8378343dc is the first commit that exhibits the
behavior described on this bug. This is a result of a merge between 2
branches.

- dba69d1092e291e257fb5673a3ad0e4c87878ebc: part of the 3.3 series,
everything works great;

- 20d9d9a0544436b1b8c94689c01d746d6bd5525c : follows v3.4-rc1. System
reboots while trying to resume from *first* suspend

Is there any other info I can provide? I can also try to see where between 3.3
and 3.4-RC1 it started to reboot

Just a note:

I'll start a bisect between v3.4-rc1 and v3.4-rc2.

There seem to be a bug in v3.4-rc1, since it didn't even resume from suspend.

3.4-rc1: rebooted automatically while resuming from suspension

[Bug 1094800] Re: Toshiba z930 fails to resume after second suspend on kernel =3.4

2013-01-09 Thread Pedro Alves
This bug report is about failing to resume from *second* suspension,
where I just get with a blank display.

In 3.4-rc1 reboots while trying to resume from *first* suspend.

My very naive interpretation is that something regarding suspension
changed for 3.4-rc1, wasn't working properly and was changed for rc2.
That fix, however, was incomplete in comparision to the 3.3 and previous
codelines

2013-01-08 Thread Pedro Alves
Hello Joseph.

I'm assuming 3.3 final is 3.3.8 - I do confirm the bug does not exist in
3.3.8 (and as far as my tests went, didn't happen in any previous
kernels I tested). Let me know if you want more tests on 3.3 series.

The bug, as I reported it, happens in 3.4-rc2. In 3.4-rc1 the system is
able to suspend, but reboots when trying to resume from suspension

[Bug 1094800] [NEW] Toshiba z930 fails to resume after second suspend on kernel =3.4

2012-12-30 Thread Pedro Alves
Public bug reported:

After resuming from first supend, brightness keys don't work, power key
doesn't show logout menu, and if I try to suspend a second time I'm
unable to recover from suspension (blank screen)

Seems similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1088721

This is definetly seems a regression. I did a manual bisect on kernels
from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline and everytihng works
ok up until kernel 3.3.8. Starting from 3.4 and up until 3.8-rc, I can
see this bug.

specific to Toshiba Portege z930(-12T)

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-09-11 Thread Pedro Alves
I find it hard to find that firefox is causing this - but for the ones
that think it's the cause, can you please go to Preferences - Advanced
- General Tab and disable / enable hardware acceleration to see if that
could be the cause?

In this thread there seems to be different things at stake. On my case, the
crashes stopped by setting i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 i915.i915_enable_fbc=0 in
grub, and I'm a heavy user of firefox

I came here due to trying to install dgen causing trouble. See:

From the description, the fix sounds simple. Is there anything blocking
it?

Thanks.

For what it's worth, there's a suggestion in this thread that worked for
me:

Setting in grub.conf: i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 i915.i915_enable_fbc=0
(instead of =1 on both) just made my computer come back from windows
mode

[Bug 847691] Re: blank external monitor, with no cursor, after login

2011-09-13 Thread Pedro Alves
Ah! A suspend to RAM and resume fixed it. (Docked, but that may not
have been necessary.) It looks like some stale state somewhere
associated with suspending. It is possible that my laptop powered down
while in the suspended state just before the problem appearing (I'm not
certain).

Any idea where could that stale state be? Which scripts to look at,
when this happens again etc.?

Otherwise, I seem to have a workaround, and things are back to normal,
so you can close this if you want.

Thanks anyway.

BTW, this was on a Dell Precision M4500 with an Nvidia Quadro FX 880M.

[Bug 847691] [NEW] blank external monitor, with no cursor, after login

2011-09-12 Thread Pedro Alves
Public bug reported:

I've been using a Twinview (nvidia) setup on kubuntu 11.04 with an
external Dell U2410 monitor for a long while without any problems.

Something changed recently though (don't know if it was an update), as
for today, all I get is a blank screen on the external monitor, no
cursor even. I can move windows to the external monitor, but I just
can't see them, not even the cursor.

The monitor claims it is receiving input (as it would power down if not
receiving input), and, when booting/logging in (I have autologin to kde
enabled), for a short second I can move the cursor to the external
monitor and see e.g. the password dialog box there. It looks as though
something disables output to the external monitor quickly after X
starts. What could that be? Using kde's screen configuration tool (an
xrandr frontend, I believe), everything appears normal.

Help?

Any other hint?
