This surprised me. Hardy uses gspca 1.00.20 as far as I know, and the
newer gspca fixed the problem for me on Gutsy. I'm still using Gutsy, so
I can't test it with Hardy at the moment.

I can confirm that the package icedtea-gcjwebplugin works on amd64. But
why does this package include 'icedtea' in it's name, despite it depends
on openjdk? Other packages named icedtea are being removed. Why not
calling it openjdk-6-plugin, or openjdk-gcjwebplugin?

The attached JRE works for me! The best solution would be to fix the

[Bug 135574] Re: installing kde-systemsettings in GNOME spams menu

2008-03-09 Thread Pelladi Gabor
Hardy is now close to it's release, it will be the last Kubuntu to ship
KDE 3, and it won't be an LTS like Ubuntu. If this bug doesn't have a
trivial fix, then I think it is not worth spending time on this issue.
There are much more serious problems to care for. KDE 4 is working as
expected, that is more important for the future.

[Bug 174884] Re: OpenOffice writer crashes after opening long rtf

2008-03-07 Thread Pelladi Gabor
The crash occurs with both ooo version 2.3.0-1ubuntu5.3 (Gutsy) and
2.3.1-3ubuntu3 (Hardy).
Opening the attached document does not result in a crash, but after that trying
to close openoffice fails. The window doesn't close, it stays there
unresponsively, and a long crash report is printed to the console, if I start
oowriter from there. The "double free" in the report makes me think there is
some kind of memory corruption after opening this long file. But the corruption
causes a crash only when freeing the allocated memory.

[Bug 66869] Re: Double click on "Floppy Drive" in Computer location jumps to / directory

2008-02-14 Thread Pelladi Gabor
I don't have a floppy drive in my own computer, so I could not test it,
but something like this shell script could do the trick:

if [ `mount | grep /media/floppy0 | wc -l` -eq 0 ]
then
mount /media/floppy0 && nautilus /media/floppy0
else
nautilus /media/floppy0
fi

Place this in e.g. /usr/bin and place a shortcut on the desktop. This
way a beginner can access the floppy without redundant actions.

2008-02-13 Thread Pelladi Gabor
Please do something about this bug. I don't think it is that hard. It is
really hard to explain the method to open a document received on a
floppy for a first time user. Should I tell her to open the floppy,
close the error dialog, go back, open floppy again? She won't believe me
that Ubuntu is easy to use any more. Or is there a workaround? An other
way of opening a floppy in nautilus, intuitive and easy? Thank you for
your efforts.

[Bug 137341] Re: HP LaserJet 1000, 1018 and 1020 are not listed in KDE Print Manager

2007-12-20 Thread Pelladi Gabor
Sorry, I did not understand the inner working of this enough. I saw that
kde-systemsettings, kaddprinterwizard reads the cache file
printerdb_cups.txt under my home for the device list. Adding a new item
to the file makes it appear on the frontend. The other HP LaserJet
printers, 1015 and 1022 are present in the hpijs.xml file, that is why
they are generated into printerdb_cups.txt. But 1000, 1018 and 1020 use
another driver, the foo2zjs. So, the real problem is how kdeprint
interacts with cups, if I understand correctly. I will try to look after
this in the kdelibs source package.

[Bug 174884] OpenOffice writer crashes after opening long rtf

2007-12-08 Thread Pelladi Gabor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-writer

I found this bug using an up-to-date Kubuntu Gutsy.
Test case:
- run oowriter from console
- open the attached rtf document
- close OpenOffice
- see the crash report on the console
First line of the crash report:
*** glibc detected *** /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin: double free or
corruption (out): 0x035e2920 ***

[Bug 109691] Re: Conflict betwen webcam 046d:0840 Logitech QuickCam Express and MX-400 logitech usb mouse

2007-11-08 Thread Pelladi Gabor
I solved the issue on Gutsy:
1. downloaded the latest (1.00.18) gspca module source from the web:
http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca50x/Download/gspcav1-20070508.tar.gz
2. renamed /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/gspcav1/gspca.ko to
gspca.ko~
3. make && sudo make install
4. reboot or reload gspca module

According to dmesg, the gspca.ko binary shipped with Ubuntu Gutsy has version
1.00.12.
Please make sure the upstream release will be merged for Hardy. It also adds
support for many new devices.

[Bug 137345] 'Open Driver' dialog of 'Add Printer' wizard should accept .ppd.gz

2007-09-04 Thread Pelladi Gabor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

The printer driver of HP LaserJet 1000 is stored in a .ppd.gz file under
/usr/share/ppd/foo2zjs. When I tried to open it from the 'Add Printer'
wizard, it did not work (wrong format). I had to manually open the file
using Ark, extract it to my home and open it from there. Since the
drivers are stored in .ppd.gz format on the hard drive, the 'Add
Printer' wizard should be able to open it.

[Bug 137342] 'Open Driver' dialog of 'Add Printer' wizard should indicate the expected extension (ppd)

2007-09-04 Thread Pelladi Gabor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

My HP LaserJet 1000 was not on the list of the models of HP, so I had to
select the driver manually. I didn't know what extension a linux

then with the compressed ppd (.ppd.gz), until I figured it out (.ppd).

[Bug 137341] HP LaserJet 1000, 1018 and 1020 are not listed in KDE Print Manager

1000 is missing from the list. 1018 and 1020 are also missing. Please
add them to the list of models. These models are present in GNOME.

[Bug 136722] Re: HP LaserJet 1000 not working

2007-09-04 Thread Pelladi Gabor
HPLIP Toolbox installed the printer into Administration/Printing using the HP
backend. This HP backend is broken. Maybe this is not a problem, because 1000
is unsupported anyways, but despite this fact it works on Feisty.
I removed the printer in HPLIP, and added it using Administration/Printing, now
with the usb backend. It worked! Test page was printed correctly.
I started to think why have I installed the printer using HPLIP on Feisty. My
Feisty is Kubuntu, that can make a difference. I downloaded Kubuntu Gutsy Tribe
5 live CD to see the situation there.
HPLIP behaves exactly the same as on Ubuntu, no surprise. Let's forget about
HPLIP, add the printer using System Settings/Printer. First I had to disable
AppArmor to be able to start cupsys (separate bug). Then started the add
printer wizard, which found the connected HP LaserJet 1000 on the usb port.
Next, next, the wizard asked for it's vendor and model. Vendor is HP, but oops!
There is no LaserJet 1000, nor 1018 and 1020. This is why I used HPLIP on
Feisty. Let's add it manually. The select driver dialog did not mention, what
kind of file it wants to open. First I tried to feed it with the firmware file.
Then I figured out it must search for the ppd file. I searched the file system
for it, and found it under /usr/share/ppd/foo2zjs. Tried to open the .ppd.gz
with no success. Opened it with ark, extracted to .ppd, and then I was finally
able to load it. The test page was successful.

I think it's currently hard to figure out for a Kubuntu user with a LaserJet
1000, 1018 or 1020 how to make it work.
These models are present in the Ubuntu 'add printer' wizard, but not in
Kubuntu. They should be added there, too.
And if somebody wants to add his own ppd driver, the open dialog should
indicate the expected extension (.ppd). And it should accept .ppd.gz as well.

[Bug 136722] Re: HP LaserJet 1000 not working

2007-09-03 Thread Pelladi Gabor
This might be interesting: I installed the printer using HPLIP Toolbox. The
install worked as it used to. I enter the USB ID (had to enter manually on
Feisty, too), finds the LaserJet 1000, but it says after the 'add new printer'
process, after sending a test page:
ERROR: Device not found. Please check connection and power-on device.
Other thing I noticed, the USB ID-s are changing every time I connect the
printer, don't know if this is normal.

[Bug 136722] HP LaserJet 1000 not working

2007-09-02 Thread Pelladi Gabor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

Printing does not work on the current Gutsy Tribe 5 with my HP LaserJet 1000. I
uploaded the firmware:
getweb 1000
sudo arm2hpdl sihp1000.img > sihp1000.dl
sudo cp sihp1000.dl /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/
After this the firmware gets uploaded every time I connect the printer. But
nothing prints.
I repeated exactly the same sequence on the stable Feisty live CD as I did with
Gutsy. HPLIP Toolbox printed an excellent test page for me. So this must be a
regression.

[Bug 135583] tv card has white noise sound because module order

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.22

When i start any tv viewer application (e.g. tvtime), it has only a
white noise sound. The 'tuner' kernel module should be loaded before
'bttv'.

Workarund 1:
This has to be repeated after every boot.
sudo rmmod bt878 && sudo rmmod bttv && sudo rmmod tuner && sudo modprobe tuner

Workaround 2:

[Bug 135574] installing kde-systemsettings in GNOME spams menu

installed a KDE application, but it's default look differs from GTK

created for launching systemsettings, but like a hundred entries were
