[Bug 1881496] Re: Failing to install Ubuntu 20.04 on virtual box 6.1, windows 10 host

2020-05-31 Thread Peter M. Clausen
Sorry, this one is most probably a duplicate (but I cant figure out how to
declare it duplicate)
#1881475

I tried to manually define partition tables in Live mode, but same
outcome.

[Bug 607560] Re: jbd2 writing block every 5 - 10 seconds, preventing disk spin-down and making noise

2014-01-14 Thread Peter M. Clausen
I just want to confirm comment #94 of Vladimir Kononov (voldemark).
After fsck on my disk drives (/ and /home) on a quite long time running
(+1year) desktop install of debian mint on an old laptop the issue of
high harddisk load seems to be minimized and system runs much more
smoothly now.

So, please do fsck on your disks and update whether or not it solves the
issue.

[Bug 959151]

2012-07-25 Thread Peter M. Clausen
Maybe it helps others:
in fustration I changed to tty1 Ctrl +Alt F1
then:
code

$ rm  -rf ~/.kde ~/.kderc /var/tmp/kdecache-MY USERNAME
$ sudo start kdm
/code

I lost all my customizaitons (~2 days of work), but at least now KDE is
working again. The error:

remains though...

[Bug 985202] Re: libx11 causes kwin to crash on login (over NX protocol)

2012-07-18 Thread Peter M. Clausen
An interesting observation:

using xterm has the expected performance (as good as it gets)
using konsole: performance slow, sluggish, hanging

could it be some kind of font issue, which in the end brings kwin down?

My systems:
host: newly installed kubuntu 12.04 64-bit
client: xubuntu 11.10 32-bit

I also have a Ubuntu 10.04 host - runs perfectly

[Bug 911560] Re: mythbuntu installation freezes

2012-01-14 Thread Peter M. Clausen
trying to install directly resulted in more or less same situation -
ubiquity hangs at some point and the installation is unuseable. The
point when it hangs/freezes seems to be the same but I cant figure out
to find out when. Thus I changed the heading.

I have tried in virtual box as well as real system - same issue.

This is a blocker - I cant test ubuntu 12.04 even if I wanted to...

- mythbuntu installation freezes in Infrared Remotes

[Bug 911524] [NEW] Nvidia driver not found by jockey-gtk (System Settings - Additional Drivers)

2012-01-03 Thread Peter M. Clausen
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:
- downlolad daily build
- install on usb stick
- run live session
- choose System Settings - Additional Drivers
- see attached screenshot

00:0d.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C61 [GeForce 7025 /

[Bug 700335] Re: No documentation for process kworker

2011-08-02 Thread Peter M. Clausen
in this thread:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?s=ad014bb3386aef40fcb3b4ae44473cfat=1630347page=4

It seems either to do witk kernel queing of processes or acpi stuff - in
any case kernel stuff which seems to bug quite a lot of people of all
distros using newer kernels, and it does not seem to be fixed...

Still, because its unclear to me what kworker really does some
documentation of the process would be nice.

[Bug 737051] Re: [regression] Alps touchpad detected, but scrolling not working

2011-05-01 Thread Peter M. Clausen
On my very old Dell Lattitude D505 I do have scrolling in the beginning,
but kind of like gescheit, after a while (my laptop is often on a very
long time, say more days) it looses the ability to scroll and more
importantly middle button (right and left simultaneously).

I'm running Natty 11.04 (32-bit), everything default. Before (from 8.04
- 10.10) I had no problems.

The only thing I found strange is the massive amount of errors in
Xorg.0.log:

@gescheit: I cant reproduce the log that you've inserted but I can
confirm the problem could arise from the docking station, which I am
also using (because recharging with cable only does not work anymore -
as I said; it's an old, but good laptop).

compat-wireless =2011-01-24 works for me as well using maverick on a Zotac MAG.
Before installing this it was close to impossible to get a connection at all

completely.

After installing I have had no issues what so ever... works like a
dream.

2010-11-20 Thread Peter M. Clausen
I think its strange this bug has low prio because it means I cant use
gstreamer to watch recorded TV-shows AT ALL, in my case recorded by
mythbuntu. Of course there is the standard work around to use mplayer /
vlc...

It also means I cant edit recorded files using Pitivi, default video
tool in lucid.

[Bug 661724] [NEW] Print of document scattered characters over document, figures OK

2010-10-16 Thread Peter M. Clausen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Print of document produces scattered characters all over document,
figures are OK

Display is OK. It seems similar to bug #457574 but I added a new one,
since its fixed for Hardy.

Whats more strange is that print to PDF and PS produces a correct
document.

To reproduce:
- Load attached pdf in evince
- Print preview (print preview as well as print is corrupt)

Workaround:
- Print to pdf
- Open new pdf and print is (correct print preview as well as print)

I dont know if its important - my printer is a network printer over
Wlan, HP deskjet 930C, with standard driver from ubuntu. It prints
without problems (corrupt documents, as well as the correct pdf after
printing to pdf)

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:glasen/intel-driver
$ sudo apt-get update  sudo apt-get upgrade

With the latest updates and kernel: 2.6.32-22-generic the problem seems
to be fixed, although it persist with 2.6.34rc3-51-generic

I am quite unsure regarding what the solution may be, because I have
been messing quite a bit around with my settings (xorg.conf) now using
intel driver, UXA grafics accelleration according to
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/intel-graphics-performance-guide-for-
ubuntu-904-jaunty-users.html

Right now I am not going to change a working system. :-)

[Bug 462939] Re: [i855gm] Lid close with intel 82852/855GM provokes black screen, loss of control and overheat

2010-05-06 Thread Peter M. Clausen
I have tested Lucid 10.04 on a Dell Lattitude D505 with Intel
Corporation 82852/855GM Graphics. This bug seems to pop up SOMETIMES...

I can boot alright with following kernels using /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf
options i915 modeset=1:
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-15-generic
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic
/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.34rc3-51-generic (from
https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/experimental )

One of the kernels did not boot correctly without the modeset option.

I have also updated to the intel driver:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu lucid main

which seems to run a bit smoother. But this bug still persist in all
configurations. Please tell me if I can give you any hints / logs to
help fix this problem.

[Bug 569372] Re: 10.4 RC Live CD - Blank screen with Radeon 5870

2010-04-27 Thread Peter M. Clausen
I have the same problem: Dell Lattitude D505 with Intel 855GM Graficcard

I have tried:
- normal boot

All resulted in blank screen, no repsonse to Alt+Ctrl+F1..F7

Its strange, because the 10.04 Alpha was running OK on my system (except
for some apci problems, e.g.470926 ).

[Bug 559822] [NEW] editra is provided by both the editra package and python-wxtools and conflicts

2010-04-10 Thread Peter M
Public bug reported:

package python-wxtools (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying
to overwrite '/usr/bin/editra', which is also in package editra
0:0.5.30-1

I installed Editra from the editra package and then also wanted PyShell
which is provided by python-wxtools. If I remove the standalone editra
package and instead try the editra version installed by python-wxtools
doesn't work because of some import errors ( described in for example
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wxwidgets2.8/+bug/470378 ).

I think removing editra from wxtools package would be a good thing since
editra and perhaps other parts of the wxtools package have their own
release schedules. That would also allow better granularity in what you
have installed.

[Bug 516329] Re: TouchPad buttons don't work on HP Mini 210 (1030NR)

2010-04-08 Thread Peter M
As RomainWartel said in comment #13. The first kernel patch here
(comment #11) only enables right click. Nothing else. Other stuff as two
finger scroll, pinch to zoom etc that works in Windows doesn't. Not on
my Mini 210 and probably not on anything else either because of what the
patch actually does.

But hey Now I can actually use Ubuntu on my computer without being
forced to have an external mouse. Just make sure that fix gets in or
I'll have to wait another 6 months before booting in Ubuntu again.

[Bug 539939] [NEW] boot option GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT nomodeset leads to crash

2010-03-16 Thread Peter M. Clausen
Public bug reported:

I am unsure if boot option is the correct wording, but to reproduce:

1. Edit /etc/default/grub
2. Change
oldGRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash
newGRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset
3. run
$ sudo update-grub
4. Restart

During restart the splash screen looks strange, flickers which then
leads to a crash where the computer hangs with a blank screen and
totally unresponsive. Only solution hard boot, boot to terminal, revert
above setting, reboot.

Bug #489447 looks similar but is regarding ATI

In redhat https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=500752 they seem
to have reported a simlilar problem.

Please help me collecting the correct info about this problem (I am new
to bug-reporting in ubuntu) and comment wether this is the correct place
to report this problem.

FYI: I was trying to work around Bug #49521 which is a major problem for

[Bug 528830] Re: Must log in twice to gdm in Lucid

2010-03-14 Thread Peter M. Clausen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 532047 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532047

I have the same problem on a dell laptop Latitude D505 and Ubuntu Lucid 10.04
32-bit
$ uname -a
 Linux clausen-laptop 2.6.32-16-generic #25-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 9 16:33:52 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I am not certain, but I think that kernel 2.6.32-15 did NOT have this
problem.

For me it only happens on login. By software installation and so on I
only enter passphrase once.

[Bug 49521] Re: Screen locks up black on laptop lid close.

2010-03-12 Thread Peter M. Clausen
I had the problem too in 9.10 but was too lazy to report it (shame on
me)

Now I have installed ubuntu 10.04 and with Kernel 2.6.32-15 it works,
but with the newer Kernel 2.6.32-16 it does not !

I have tried the above workarounds #14 (resetting xorg, but I am unsure
if this really works for the new xorg ?) and above #27 (changing
lid.sh). Both did NOT work with Kernel 2.6.32-16.

[Bug 49521] Re: Screen locks up black on laptop lid close.

2010-03-12 Thread Peter M. Clausen
Closing the lid causes a total freeze of my system, not even ssh is
possible.

I am giving up for now. I can not find a solution on my own and I am
afraid that this problem may affect others with intel graphic card /
dell laptops...

My laptop is a Dell Latitude D505 with fairly fresh install and upgraded
version of Lucid, Ubuntu 10.04:
 uname -a
Linux clausen-laptop 2.6.32-16-generic #25-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 9 16:33:52 UTC
2010 i686 GNU/Linux

I have also tried the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#Force Pipe A Quirk
with the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf_NO_GO which resulted in system black-out (no
screen, not even ssh from other box). In the attached archive
dell_lattitude_D505_Lucid.tar.gz I have added :
$ lspci -vvnn | grep -A1 VGA compat  vga_compat.txt
$ sudo dmidecode  dmi.txt

As well as the not working xorg.conf (generated with Xorg -configure +
Option ForceEnablePipeA true ) as well as my /etc/acpi/lid.sh

I'll be happy to give you additional infos, just tell me what you need.
If I am posting in the wrong bug, please let me know.

Just for the record: Graphics do look fine, seem to have OK performance.
With my old Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS installation did NOT have this problem
and as far as I remember I have not fixed or quirked anything...

[Bug 482684] Re: The nm-applet icon is missing or the sound icon is duplicated and the second one is dead

2010-03-09 Thread Peter M. Clausen
I had the same problem installing Lucid on an older latop, dell
lattitude D505. The strange thing was that I succesedded getting I-net
(wireless, WPA2) this first boot after fresh installation. Then ubuntu
crashed as I tried waking it up from sleep and after this I did not
have any applet, and I was not able to connect to the internet !

I will try the solutions above, but I was quite amazed that I could not
get the I-net running again. I tried killing NetworkManager itself, but
that did not do the trick.

This bug will be quite problematic for non-techies !

[Bug 333474] Re: openoffice3 calc crashes opening this spreadsheet

2009-09-28 Thread Peter M
As an addition, I had the same problem and simply removing the
.openoffice.org/3/user/backup directory already solved the problem.

Ah, well... strike that last comment. That only seems to help if you
have named recoverable documents.

Quite an annoying bug!

[Bug 246659] Re: Backuppc no compression when change topdir

2009-09-19 Thread Peter M
My suggestion would be to _at least_ add a notice about this behaviour
in the distr config file. This is still a bug in 9.04.

After forgetting this issue when struggling with it in 8.04 as well,
just cost me a couple of hours (when realizing what it was I did felt
kinda stupid not to rember it but still..) trying to understand the
somewhat cryptic error message (`MakeFileLink returns error -4`) .

Anyway, adding a extra notice about this somewhere should at least help
new users to avoid this problem.
