Same problem on Ubuntu 18.04 - thankfully edelans posted a fix in #19
for removing the message!

[Bug 1850756] [NEW] ls only on ~/ hangs in state S after wakeup from suspend unless done with strace

2019-10-31 Thread Peter Schüller
Public bug reported:

Recently (last 1 month) I encounter the problem that after waking up the
computer from sleep mode (suspend to RAM) sometimes the home directory
(encrypted) becomes inaccessible to programs.

For example ls ~/ will just hang in S mode.

Attaching an strace to ls from another console does not show anything,
not even a started syscall.

Starting ls as root on the problematic home directory also hangs.

The only way I found to undo the hang is a reboot.

dmesg and journalctl does not show anything I could recognize as out-of-
the-ordinary.

Starting strace ls as root on the problematic home directory does not
hang but return the correct list of files and exits with 0. See the
strace below.

/home/ps# strace ls .

[Bug 1850756] Re: ls only on ~/ hangs in state S after wakeup from suspend unless done with strace

2019-10-31 Thread Peter Schüller
I forgot to mention: when attaching strace to the problematic ls, strace
also hangs and cannot be interrupted with CTRL+C - the console is
practically dead.

[Bug 1718658] Re: ecryptfs-mount-private fails to initialize ecryptfs keys

2019-10-26 Thread Peter Schüller
I have a completely encrypted home (auto configured) in bionic and have
the same error messages in dmesg. Moreover, since a few weeks ago, the
home directory sometimes gets broken in a way that all list requests
(ls, browse in nautilus) hang just on the home directory (process in S
state) and only a reboot solves this. I found the dmesg messages only
because of these hangs which might be unrelated.

2019-03-16 Thread Peter Schüller
The fix of Kai-Heng Feng works and the modem becomes available and at
least SMS sending via modem-manager-gui works!

(I did only the "Add customized usb_modeswitch configuration" part and
re-plugged the device.)

Should I still report the issue upstream?

The same happens with 5.0.0 (it is the uppermost folder in the mainline

[Bug 1255610] Re: 100% CPU usage with "initctl emit plymouth-ready" process

2017-02-14 Thread Peter Schüller
Sorry, cannot come from google chrome because I installed < 48 h ago and
the process already has 344 CPU hours.

Same strace as #14 here, and stack is sometimes

# cat /proc/1898/stack
[] 0x

sometimes

# cat /proc/1898/stack
[] retint_careful+0x14/0x32
[] 0x

next to initctl emit plymouth-ready i also have /sbin/initctl emit
indicator-services-start

but this is sleeping and has stack
# cat /proc/4370/stack
[] poll_schedule_timeout+0x49/0x70
[] do_sys_poll+0x428/0x540
[] SyS_poll+0x65/0x100
[] system_call_fastpath+0x1a/0x1f

[Bug 1542030] Re: Problem during configuring (wrong path)

2016-02-26 Thread Peter Schüller
As a workaround to allow installation, I made a symlink:

# cd /usr/lib
# ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/utempter
# apt-get install libutempter0

-> installation can finish however it might be good to remove the
symlink afterwards (?)

[Bug 1484890] [NEW] Failed installing image after entering root password, loopback devices stay mounted

2015-08-14 Thread Peter Schüller
Public bug reported:

While running usb-creator-gtk it asks for root authentication to install
the boot loader (System policy prevents installation of the boot
loader) but even if I enter the correct authentication the program
gives a failure message and terminates. Afterwards two loopback devices
stay mounted. I tried with and without the casper partition, both fails.
also running usb-creator-gtk with sudo fails (without asking for root
password).

[Bug 1300914] Re: External screen undetected after first plug

2015-05-21 Thread Peter Schüller
The behavior changed and I again checked several kernel versions and
found an important difference:

* 46 shows lightdm greeter (password input) on internal and external
monitor and after starting the session (login) the external monitor is
deactivated but I can reactivate it (switch between
internal/external/internal+external monitor) using the appropriate Fn+F
key combination to make the session visible on the external monitor.

* 48, 49, 52, 51 shows lightdm greeter (password input) on internal and
external screen but after starting the session (login) the external
monitor stops working and Fn+F does not activate it again. Logging out
again shows the lightdm greeter on both monitors but once in the session
it is impossible to get the external monitor working except for logging
out.

The only difference in behavior is the kernel version. At the moment
only kernel 46 is usable.

Re: [Bug 1300914] Re: External screen undetected after first plug

2015-05-09 Thread Peter Schüller
Recently the workaround I previously described stopped working:
logging out of the session and logging in back does not work anymore:
only the lightdm screen becomes visible on the projector, the session
is never visible! (After plugging out the monitor the first time, or
after shutting down the beamer the first time. Before that it works.)

[Bug 1405256] Re: Package does not contain service file

2015-04-07 Thread Peter Schüller
So what is the new recommended way to setup cgroups that should always
exist even after a reboot?

I found a lot of documentation about cgroups.conf but it simply does not
work on 14.04.

Or are cgroups generally a concept that is being abandoned? Is there an
alternative method to limit resources?

As I wrote above: for me logging out of the session and in again

resolved and both monitors work again).

never works.)

[Bug 1300914] Re: External screen undetected after first plug

2015-03-23 Thread Peter Schüller
Nick I understand. I personally use tmux a lot to avoid this, but this
works only for console applications.

The important point I wanted to make is: it does not require a hardware-
level-reset to restore the functionality.

As a consequence I believe this should be fixable in software.

[Bug 1300914] Re: External screen undetected after first plug

2015-03-19 Thread Peter Schüller
Nick Demou: I tried with 3.13.0-32-generic, 3.13.0-44-generic,
3.13.0-45-generic, 3.13.0-46-generic

In 44 it does not work, not even once. The external VGA port never
becomes active.

All the others work with the described bug:
* the VGA port becomes mirrored during boot.
* When I unplug it and plug it in again it does not work anymore.
* [Workaround] If I log out of my session or restart lightdm the VGA port
becomes active again, until the next plugout or shutdown of the screen.

I had this message as error during cleanup: installArchives() failed

there is no way to scroll back in the window because of the error popup

However after confirming the error, the system was able to reboot and it
worked so this error sounds bad but seems to be not very critical (for

I solved the problem for me by doing as root the following:

(Before you do this, make sure you have the two package files or similar
versions of these package files in /var/cache/apt/archives !)

dpkg --ignore-depends=tex-common --purge tex-common
dpkg --ignore-depends=texlive-base --purge texlive-base

dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/texlive-base_2013.20140215-1_all.deb

Just purging and installing tex-common did not work. Texlive-base is
somehow involved in this. It seems tex-common can only be installed if
texlive-base is not yet there.

[Bug 1250281] Re: depmod fills disk to 100% with modules.ccwmap

2014-05-31 Thread Peter Schüller
I had the same problem just now on a 12.04 while upgrading the kernel:

The file /lib/modules/3.2.0-64-generic/modules.ccwmap grows until the
disk is full.

I ran the upgrade from upgrademanager.

Killing depmod makes it run again, killing it again makes the upgrade
finish, I doubt though that the kernel will work.

[Bug 1250281] Re: depmod fills disk to 100% with modules.ccwmap

2014-05-31 Thread Peter Schüller
It turns out removing the linux-image-3.2.0-64-generic package (this
also requires to remove linux-image-generic) afterwards gave an error
message and my /vmlinuz file was gone.

Marking the linux-image-3.2.0-63-generic for reinstall in synaptic and
reinstalling it recreated the files and terminated without errors.

Installing linux-image-3.2.0-64-generic afterwards (second attempt)
terminated without filling the disk and without errors except for the
following thing which I cannot make sense of, it seems to be
contradictory:

===
Running depmod.

Re: [Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2014-05-12 Thread Peter Schüller
I think what is broken is just the program to configure these shortcuts.
Why? Because using workarounds I can configure my X to switch among layouts
when I press ALT+SHIFT. In my setup at least there is no inherent
limitation about the ability of using these special keys for switching.

To give an example of such a workaround in my Gnome Classic Flashback
(Metacity):
* If I right-click on the indicator icon, select Text Entry Settings...
then I will get a dialog window where I can define just shortcuts for
Switch to next source using... and Switch to previous source using...
and in this dialog box I CAN configure ALT+SHIFT. When I close the dialog
afterwards it works just fine, consistently, I can switch.
* In the system settings - keyboard - shortcuts dialog I can even
see ALT+SHIFT there, however if I delete this shortcut there is no way to
get it back in that dialog because it will not detect the key. I can always
set the shortcut using Text Entry Settings.

Perhaps the problem is so trivial just for the case of Gnome Classic
Flashback (Metacity). But in Gnome Classic Flashback (Metacity) in my
opinion the only problem is the GUI in the system settings, and the problem
is that it does not detect the keypress. The dialog even displays this
shortcut correctly if it has been set using another tool, so the shortcut
storage and representation is working, just key press detection for setting
the shortcut is broken.

[Bug 1218322] Re: Can't set keyboard layout change to alt+shift, ctrl+shift, etc.

2014-05-08 Thread Peter Schüller
William: I installed your packages, logged out and in of Gnome Classic
Flashback (Metacity) on 14.04.

But it does not work. I tried to set ALT+LSHIFT, LCTRL+LSHIFT,
LALT+LCTRL, ALTGR+RCTRL, ALTGR+RSHIFT, RCTRL+RSHIFT, LCTRL+ALTGR,
LCTRL+RCTRL, LCTRL+RSHIFT.

Is there an easy way to switch back from your packages to the non-ppa
packages? I think ALTGR+RCTRL worked before installing your ppa but I
want to verify.

2014-05-01 Thread Peter Schüller
After deinstalling gstreamer plugins and totem-mozilla plugin and
disabling gstreamer setting in firefox the problem disappeared.

I then step-by-step reactivated these packages except for the
totem-mozilla plugin. The bug did not appear again.

I will now install totem-mozilla and see what happens.

[Bug 1304351] [NEW] firefox 200% CPU usage while idle/shutdown: mpegaudioparse0 and mpegaudioparse1 processes

2014-04-08 Thread Peter Schüller
Public bug reported:

Firefox regularly eats up 100% or 200% CPU usage while just gmail and
google calendar pages are opened.

Shutting down firefox does not really shut it down, only the window
disappears, the processes that eat CPU stay, so restarting firefox does
not work until I manually kill these processes.

While they show up as firefox in $ top, I now managed to activate the
thread view where these processes show up as mpegaudioparse0 and
mpegaudioparse1 processes.

Actually this might not be a bug in firefox but in one of the
extensions, e.g., flashplugin, but I am not sure. Firefox should kill
these harshly when exiting, so that restarting firefox is a possible
solution to CPU-eating buggy plugins and extensions.

I am using ubuntu 12.4.

[Bug 1298802] Re: 2357:0100 [Gigabyte 965P-DS3] USB Wifi TP-Link WN8200ND cannot associate to access points

2014-04-08 Thread Peter Schüller
Meanwhile I tried ndiswrapper without success:

ndiswrapper from ppa:crass/ndiswrapper
https://launchpad.net/~crass/+archive/ndiswrapper on kernel
3.11.0-20-generic #34~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Apr 3 17:25:07 UTC 2014
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I downloaded the vendor drivers from http://www.tp-
link.com.de/support/download/?model=TL-WN8200NDversion=V1 where I used
the newest version TL-WN8200ND_V1_131119

After installing ndiswrapper and unpacking the windows drivers I created
symlinks such that the path to the .inf file does not contain spaces (I
found a hint online that ndiswrapper fails with spaces in the path).

I tried all four 64bit driver versions with the following result:
* winxp driver is detected as valid driver by ndisgtk, plugging in the USB
dongle shows the log line of the USB connect in the syslog and then the whole
computer freezes, no CTRL+ALT+DELETE works, no CTRL+ALT+F1 works. after
rebooting more lines of the syslog are missing

* windows vista and windows 7 drivers are detected as invalid driver
by ndisgtk

* windows 8 driver is detected as valid driver, plugging in the USB
dongle gives errors in the syslog (see attached ndiswin8syslog.txt) but
the computer does not freeze but the dongle also does not work, no
network device appears

(I have also blacklisted the native modules to make sure they do not
interfere.)

[Bug 728825] Re: Eclipse cannot start: java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: no swt-gtk-3557 or swt-gtk

2014-03-31 Thread Peter Schüller
I have the bug in an up-to-date precise in eclipse 3.7.2-1 - the
workaround also works for me but the bug is not fixed or the fix was
removed.

[Bug 1298802] Re: 2357:0100 [Gigabyte 965P-DS3] USB Wifi TP-Link WN8200ND cannot associate to access points

2014-03-31 Thread Peter Schüller
This other network is a public access point, I have no access to the
hardware but the password was provided to me.

Looking at the logs it shows MAC is 18:28:61:56:ec:bf which gives
AirTies on the Mac/Vendor lookup http://www.coffer.com/mac_find/

The following syslog line contains some more information about the used
protocol:
wpa_supplicant[2689]: WPA: Key negotiation completed with 18:28:61:56:ec:bf
[PTK=CCMP GTK=TKIP]

I tried to use the Use as a Hotspot option in the NetworkManager and
it does not create a hotspot that is visible to my laptop or my phone,
also I get garbled syslog messages again when disconnecting. Again the
SSID of the SIOCSIWESSID syscall is broken in the syslog.

[Bug 1298802] Re: 2357:0100 USB Wifi TP-Link WN8200ND cannot associate to access points

2014-03-30 Thread Peter Schüller
I installed
* linux-headers-3.14.0-031400rc8-generic_3.14.0-031400rc8.201403242335_amd64.deb
* linux-headers-3.14.0-031400rc8_3.14.0-031400rc8.201403242335_all.deb
* linux-image-3.14.0-031400rc8-generic_3.14.0-031400rc8.201403242335_amd64.deb

With that kernel I can connect to my cellphone access point, but not to
the other network that allows my laptop to connect easily.

So the situation is better than in the repository kernel, but there is
still a bug that needs to be fixed.

[Bug 1298802] Re: 2357:0100 USB Wifi TP-Link WN8200ND cannot associate to access points

2014-03-30 Thread Peter Schüller
(hiding previous comment, will do more research on file downloading,
please ignore previous comment [i found no way to delete it])

After some more testing with 3.14-rc8 I can confirm that the situation is just
a tiny bit better than in the repository kernel:
* associating to the cellphone accesspoint does not always work and the syslog
shows several attempts until it works if it works
* if the connection is there, it is unstable and sometimes disconnects with
traffic
* packet loss and ping times are bad (see belowresults for pinging my personal
homepage (hosted in switzerland) via my cellphone accesspoint

pinging from the computer with the 3.14-rc8 kernel and the WN8200ND
hardware: ping-8192cu.txt

--- www.peterschueller.com ping statistics ---
28 packets transmitted, 28 received, 0% packet loss, time 27045ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 157.014/496.532/2018.405/510.937 ms, pipe 3

pinging from my laptop (centrino ultimate-n 6300 wifi card):

--- www.peterschueller.com ping statistics ---
29 packets transmitted, 21 received, 27% packet loss, time 28101ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 367.968/867.568/4077.452/835.474 ms, pipe 5

So the average roundtrip is actually better with the 8192cu but the
deviation is greater and the packet loss is 27% compared to 0%.

Some more observations:
* the syslog shows frequent powersave messages, even if there is no extra
traffic happening.
* if I provoke traffic by downloading a 1.2 MB file, the file is downloaded
completely before syslog shows that it went out of powersave mode (although
tail -f on the syslog file might not be the optimal way to do such a test)

When I say Turn Off in the network manager, the syslog shows garbled
content like a mismanaged buffer or uninitialized memory. I have
attached the part of the syslog and a hexdump of the garbled two lines.

Yes, this test was done after deinstalling the rtl8192cu-fixes and after
removing the module blacklisting for the native module.

I will do the upstream bugreport (hopefully today).
