[Bug 1850756] [NEW] ls only on ~/ hangs in state S after wakeup from suspend unless done with strace
Public bug reported: Recently (last 1 month) I encounter the problem that after waking up the computer from sleep mode (suspend to RAM) sometimes the home directory (encrypted) becomes inaccessible to programs. For example ls ~/ will just hang in S mode. Attaching an strace to ls from another console does not show anything, not even a started syscall. Starting ls as root on the problematic home directory also hangs. The only way I found to undo the hang is a reboot. dmesg and journalctl does not show anything I could recognize as out-of- the-ordinary. Starting strace ls as root on the problematic home directory does not hang but return the correct list of files and exits with 0. I have a completely encrypted home (auto configured) in bionic and have the same error messages in dmesg. Moreover, since a few weeks ago, the home directory sometimes gets broken in a way that all list requests (ls, browse in nautilus) hang just on the home directory (process in S state) and only a reboot solves this. The behavior changed and I again checked several kernel versions and found an important difference: * 46 shows lightdm greeter (password input) on internal and external monitor and after starting the session (login) the external monitor is deactivated but I can reactivate it (switch between internal/external/internal+external monitor) using the appropriate Fn+F key combination to make the session visible on the external monitor. * 48, 49, 52, 51 shows lightdm greeter (password input) on internal and external screen but after starting the session (login) the external monitor stops working and Fn+F does not activate it again. Logging out again shows the lightdm greeter on both monitors but once in the session it is impossible to get the external monitor working except for logging out. The only difference in behavior is the kernel version. Recently the workaround I previously described stopped working: logging out of the session and logging in back does not work anymore: only the lightdm screen becomes visible on the projector, the session is never visible! (After plugging out the monitor the first time, or after shutting down the beamer the first time. Before that it works.) So what is the new recommended way to setup cgroups that should always exist even after a reboot? I found a lot of documentation about cgroups.conf but it simply does not work on 14.04. Or are cgroups generally a concept that is being abandoned? As I wrote above: for me logging out of the session and in again consistently restores it (already when lightdm is restarting it is resolved and both monitors work again). Nick I understand. I personally use tmux a lot to avoid this, but this works only for console applications. The important point I wanted to make is: it does not require a hardware- level-reset to restore the functionality. I had this message as error during cleanup: installArchives() failed and the window with the log shows the end of a python backtrace and there is no way to scroll back in the window because of the error popup dialog. I solved the problem for me by doing as root the following: (Before you do this, make sure you have the two package files or similar versions of these package files in /var/cache/apt/archives !) dpkg --ignore-depends=tex-common --purge tex-common dpkg --ignore-depends=texlive-base --purge texlive-base dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/tex-common_4.04_all.deb dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/texlive-base_2013.20140215-1_all.deb Just purging and installing tex-common did not work. Texlive-base is somehow involved in this. I had the same problem just now on a 12.04 while upgrading the kernel: The file /lib/modules/3.2.0-64-generic/modules.ccwmap grows until the disk is full. I ran the upgrade from upgrademanager. It turns out removing the linux-image-3.2.0-64-generic package (this also requires to remove linux-image-generic) afterwards gave an error message and my /vmlinuz file was gone. Marking the linux-image-3.2.0-63-generic for reinstall in synaptic and reinstalling it recreated the files and terminated without errors. I think what is broken is just the program to configure these shortcuts. Why? Because using workarounds I can configure my X to switch among layouts when I press ALT+SHIFT. In my setup at least there is no inherent limitation about the ability of using these special keys for switching. To give an example of such a workaround in my Gnome Classic Flashback (Metacity): * If I right-click on the indicator icon, select Text Entry Settings... then I will get a dialog window where I can define just shortcuts for Switch to next source using... and Switch to previous source using... and in this dialog box I CAN configure ALT+SHIFT. When I close the dialog afterwards it works just fine, consistently, I can switch. * In the system settings - keyboard - shortcuts dialog I can even see ALT+SHIFT there, however if I delete this shortcut there is no way to get it back in that dialog because it will not detect the key. I can always set the shortcut using Text Entry Settings. Perhaps the problem is so trivial just for the case of Gnome Classic Flashback (Metacity). But in Gnome Classic Flashback (Metacity) in my opinion the only problem is the GUI in the system settings, and the problem is that it does not detect the keypress. The dialog even displays this shortcut correctly if it has been set using another tool, so the shortcut storage and representation is working, just key press detection for setting the shortcut is broken. After deinstalling gstreamer plugins and totem-mozilla plugin and disabling gstreamer setting in firefox the problem disappeared. I then step-by-step reactivated these packages except for the totem-mozilla plugin. The bug did not appear again. I will now install totem-mozilla and see what happens. I have gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly installed I have gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 installed I have gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad installed I do not know why I installed them, must be many months ago... I removed the totem-mozilla package to see if the bug will occur again, just to check one thing at a time. This problem occurs every week or so so I expect I will see a change. Public bug reported: Firefox regularly eats up 100% or 200% CPU usage while just gmail and google calendar pages are opened. Shutting down firefox does not really shut it down, only the window disappears, the processes that eat CPU stay, so restarting firefox does not work until I manually kill these processes. While they show up as firefox in $ top, I now managed to activate the thread view where these processes show up as mpegaudioparse0 and mpegaudioparse1 processes. Actually this might not be a bug in firefox but in one of the extensions, e.g., flashplugin, but I am not sure. Firefox should kill these harshly when exiting, so that restarting firefox is a possible solution to CPU-eating buggy plugins and extensions. I am using ubuntu 12.4. In about:config I can see that media.gstreamer.enabled is default (true) Should I try if this happens again if I set it to false? Which functionality will I lose if I set it to false? This other network is a public access point, I have no access to the hardware but the password was provided to me. Looking at the logs it shows MAC is 18:28:61:56:ec:bf which gives AirTies on the Mac/Vendor lookup http://www.coffer.com/mac_find/ The following syslog line contains some more information about the used protocol: wpa_supplicant[2689]: WPA: Key negotiation completed with 18:28:61:56:ec:bf [PTK=CCMP GTK=TKIP] I tried to use the Use as a Hotspot option in the NetworkManager and it does not create a hotspot that is visible to my laptop or my phone, also I get garbled syslog messages again when disconnecting. When I say Turn Off in the network manager, the syslog shows garbled content like a mismanaged buffer or uninitialized memory. Yes, this test was done after deinstalling the rtl8192cu-fixes and after removing the module blacklisting for the native module.
