[Bug 1574700] Re: Silent mode does not turn off ALL sounds

2016-05-02 Thread Peter Velosy
Then this should be rephrased as a change request. I think the fact that
there is ABSOLUTELY no option to ensure that apps DO NOT play sound
UNEXPECTEDLY is unacceptable. This should either be a sound setting or a
browser option, or an app permissions option, but there should be some
way of reaching this functionality without the user having to carry a
dummy jack plug with him Or there should be a dialog box, mainly in
the browser, that sais "You are currently in silent mode but the website
abcd would like to play sound. Would you like this site to start sound
playback?" Alarms are a different thing because you set them yourself,
and are well aware of the fact that they will - and should always -
sound.

I personally encountered this problem once when I wanted to look up the
translation of the text of a musical work while I was at a concert, and
the website which contained the text actually started playing the music.
I think there is no more need to explain how embarrassing that is.
Another time I wanted to look up a timetable at a bus stop and it turned
out that the transport company's website had an advertisement which
played back sound. Loudly. So all in all I really think that this is an
issue which should have a solution at some software level.

Instructions to reproduce: Set phone to silent, Open Web Browser, go to
any web page which plays back sound (or videos with a sound track). The
sound will be audible despite the silent mode setting.

Do you need any further information?

[Bug 1574700] [NEW] Silent mode does not turn off ALL sounds

2016-04-25 Thread Peter Velosy
Public bug reported:

The silent mode unfortunately lacks the option to prohibit ALL
applications from producing sound. This can be extremely frustrating,
when someone is in an environment where silence is preferred (library,
conference, etc), wants to check something online, and the website (or
an application) still produces sound...

[Bug 1494707] [NEW] Ubuntu Touch UI completely frozen - not able to turn off phone

2015-09-11 Thread Peter Velosy
Public bug reported:

When browsing Google with the webbrowser-app, my phone's UI became
completely frozen so that it does not accept any input. Strangely,
screen rotation and incoming phone calls work, but I cannot answer
calls.

What makes the situation the most annoying is that the power off button
does not react, so I am sort of stuck in this situation (unless I can
ssh into the phone and reboot it from there - however, I cannot try that
out right now).

[Bug 1069909] [NEW] LibreOffice Calc main menu bar disappears

2012-10-22 Thread Peter Velosy
Public bug reported:

I recently opened some Excel documents with this version of LibreOffice
Calc. At random times the main menu bar became invisible (see attached
screenshot), minimizing/restoring the window didn't help either. I only
experienced this issue when opening one of the Excel files sent to me,
I'm also attaching a file that triggered this behaviour.

[Bug 1069909] Re: LibreOffice Calc main menu bar disappears

2012-10-22 Thread Peter Velosy
So this is the Excel file that triggered the problem. On the attached
screenshot you can see that the window's main bar doesn't display the
menu if you hover the mouse over it. Actions causing the window to
repaint don't help either. Until now I was unable to identify the action
that triggers this behaviour, it seems to be quite random...

[Bug 1068858] [NEW] Graphics flaw in software-center

Public bug reported:

The progress bars in my software-center seem to have a graphics flaw:
instead of displaying a solid progress bar, the middle of the bar gets
filled with the window background color, or with the selection color if

[Bug 1068594] [NEW] Failed to upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10, I was left with an unusable system

2012-10-19 Thread Peter Velosy
Public bug reported:

When upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10 using update-manager and the kfki
server from Hungary, I was confronted with the error "subprocess new
pre-removal script returned error exit status 1" for debconf, along with
the same error for python3, libpam-modules and lsb. The upgrade
terminated with a message like "Process aborted, too many errors", then
the Restart button was shown, but I was presented with an unusable OS
that boots into a black screen, and where repair mode didn't work either
(it simply did nothing after running fsck). I had to reinstall
everything from scratch.

[Bug 995319] [NEW] Scrollbars in Dash are way too narrow, usability affected

2012-05-05 Thread Peter Velosy
Public bug reported:

This is not a bug as such, but an important usability issue. Many users
not acquainted with Ubuntu's application names have the situation quite
often, that they would like to look through the list of all installed
apps in order to find something. You open Dash, switch to the
appropriate tab, see the list of apps - however, the 3px wide scrollbar
found here is very very awkward to use. Many people do not have a mouse
wheel, so I would suggest offering a better solution here.

- either by implementing the standard scrolling in Ubuntu 12.04 with the small
"handle" popping up
- or by making the scrollbar wider

- and last but not least: I'd personally make a very small area left and
right of the scrollbar click-insensitive. It happens very often with me
that I try to catch the scrollbar but I click a pixel too far and the
whole Dash disappears.

[Bug 995303] [NEW] Ubiquity terminated at the user picture selection screen

2012-05-05 Thread Peter Velosy
Public bug reported:

I tried to install Ubuntu by using a bootable USB key. At first,
ubiquity hung shortly after detecting my webcam and presenting me with
the user avatar selection screen.

The message that appeared was something like: a critical error has
occured, you will be presented a desktop session to resolve the problem.
Apport did not appear at this point.

>From this desktop session I relaunched ubiquity. This time it hung
straight away, presenting an Apport bug tracing screen. I unfortunately
cannot tell you anything else about this error because Apport terminated
and thus I was not presented with a log.

At my third try an error occured at the same pont as the first time,
with the slight difference that Ubiquity simply terminated (the window
diesappeared) without calling any error handling routine.

At my fourth try it succeeded I'm using an ASUS X52s Laptop with a
built-in webcam.

[Bug 539827] Re: ubiquity crashes after clicking "try ubuntu"

2010-10-11 Thread Peter Velosy
I would add, that it happened to me with the final version as well!
Clicked Try Ubuntu in the Live CD menu, then for about 5 minutes,
nothing happened, although the system was / alive / , so the cursor was
moving and all desktop elements were clickable. I had to click the red
cross to exit, then clicked OK, finally the desktop was shown, but with
the bug reporting tool showing an ubiquity crash.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-04-08 Thread Peter Velosy
Thanks, Michael, now the picture is getting clear to me. I thought the
functionality thus far was that update-manager just appeared under all
windows (there was some discussion about a pop-under), showing up only
after all windows have been closed or its taskbar button has been
clicked. The reason why I didn't know was that as updmanager showed no
trace at my PC at all since my Jaunty upgrade, thus I got used to
checking for updates manually every day.

So if the taskbar button really gets some kind of a flashing effect then
it's a good approach indeed.

2009-04-08 Thread Peter Velosy
Mark wrote: "The behaviour of the update manager was changed so that it

I have a feeling that this behaviour is even worse than the original
pop-under approach. It only strengthens the feeling in the user that an
application was launched by mistake... Also, when I see update-manager
running minimized, my first reaction is 'Okay, I've already checked for
updates and they are now being installed while I'm doing my work'.

[Bug 358049] [NEW] Jaunty GUI and internet connectivity completely lost after auto-update

2009-04-08 Thread Peter Velosy
Public bug reported:

After auto-updating my Jaunty a few days ago, the first symptom was that
my WIFI connection went away. After that I tried restarting my PC, which
resulted in a need to run fsck on the root filesystem. Also, since this
restart, I'm unable to launch any desktop environment (even Gnome safe
mode gives me a blank screen), and neither can I restore my internet
access in terminal as ifconfig does not recognize my wireless adapter.
No hardware failure, everything works OK under Windows.
