Re: [Bug 437491] Re: low max screen desktop resolution with ATI Rage XL

2009-10-31 Thread Peter W Bowey
Thanks Bruce,

Yes, I worked that out - when I used a different monitor, the hsync and
vsync results were as expected.

(II) MACH64(0): default monitor: Using default hsync range of 31.50-37.90
kHz
(II) MACH64(0): default monitor: Using default vrefresh range of
50.00-70.00 Hz
(WW) MACH64(0): Unable to estimate virtual size

For this video driver, looks like you're going to have to hardcode your
hsync and vrefresh. X can't detect your monitor's capabilities so is
using defaults, which appear to not fit your monitor capabilities very
well.

** Package changed: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) = xserver-xorg-
video-mach64 (Ubuntu)

Re: [Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2009-08-28 Thread Peter W Bowey
If you have successfully installed the new kernel (2.6.31-8.28), then you
will have success after you have found a non-destructive way to reboot or
power down your system New kernel replacement and use only occurs after a
reboot cycle. The original (older kernel = 2.6.31-7) remains in-place until
the system is correctly shut down. If you are offered a choice of kernels at
boot then choose the latest = 2.6.31-8.28!

[Bug 418560] Re: Unfinished shutdown or reboot

2009-08-27 Thread Peter W Bowey
Confirmed: Latest kernel 2.6.31-7 (not rc7) hangs on reboot or shutdown! No
time-out occurs.
Any effort to force the shutdown (keys or commands) - other than physical
'System Power Off' fails.
This occurs even with DBUS disabled. No System logs exist to clarify further on
this kernel event 'hang'.

[Bug 418560] Re: Unfinished shutdown or reboot

2009-08-27 Thread Peter W Bowey
If one tries Control-Alt-Del on this Kernel 26.31.-7 shutdown / restart
hang, the initial message is:

Init: rc main process (6281) stopped by STOP signal
Init: rc main process (6281) continued by CONT signal

Further attempts at 'Control-Alt-Del' show this message:

The system is going down for a reboot NOW!
Control-Alt-Del pressed

This repeats for further attempts at 'Control-Alt-Del'

Hard Poweroff is the only resort!

2009-08-27 Thread Peter W Bowey
That is the same UPDATE response I got earlier. It simply means the meta
package is not released (yet). Just goto
https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/2.6.31-8.28/+build/1192025
and select your matching kernel, 'wget' the package, then use dpkg -i
linux-image-2.6.31-8-generic_2.6.31-8.28_i386.deb (or whataver kernel
package matches).

[Bug 418509] Re: [Karmic] Hangs during shutdown with kernel 2.6.31-7

2009-08-27 Thread Peter W Bowey
That is the same UPDATE response I got earlier. It simply means the meta
package is not released (yet).

Just goto
https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/2.6.31-8.28/+build/1192025
and select your matching kernel, 'wget' the package, then use dpkg -i
linux-image-2.6.31-8-generic_2.6.31-8.28_i386.deb (or whataver kernel
package matches).

You may need to 'purge' linux-image-generic, I did. If so just use
'aptitude purge linux-image-generic'

[Bug 289098] [NEW] VMWare keyboard mapping made incorrect on recent Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 Updates -dated Fri Oct 24 2008

2008-10-25 Thread Peter W Bowey
Public bug reported:

I had been using VMWare Workstation V6.5 to run VM guests under Ubuntu
Intrepid V8.10 - as the OS host; the most recent updates (dated Friday
Oct 24th 2008) for Ubuntu totally changed the VMware Workstation guest
(Windows XP Professional) keyboard mapping! Cursor keys, Insert, Home,
Page Up, Delete, End, Page Down in the VM guest have been remapped and I
am forced to use the numeric keypad to serve the expected keyboard
functions in a VM guest session.

The recent updates (Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10) that changed the previously
correct guest keyboard mappings were:

[Bug 280142] Re: This update kills all Internet access! (DHCP based)

2008-10-25 Thread Peter W Bowey
Hi Alexander Sack,

I now longer use the give 'network-manager_0.7--
svn20081004t225044-0ubuntu1_i386.deb'

Simply removing it [network-manager_0.7--
svn20081004t225044-0ubuntu1_i386.deb] - resolved the problems with my
Intranet and Network system.

I suffered a major 'down-time' with this update that took down most of
my multiple workstation access to my networked Broadband Services. I
needed a fast solution. So.

I used Google to troubleshoot and 'act' on the results of other Ubuntu
users with a similar problem.

Problem resolved by removal of above application (the older version did
work fine)!

Regards - Peter Bowey
