Switching to metacity before connecting the second monitor works for me.
Interestingly, I can enable compiz with the second monitor connected,
the output produced by it is as follows:

2009-11-12 Thread PhilW
I am affected by this bug, too, and it definitely needs to be fixed. I
can't believe that this bug got into the release, especially since it
was reported 6 weeks ago. If you need any more information or testers of
fixes, please tell me how I can help.

[Bug 444563] Re: rename(/dev//.udev-tmp, /dev//) failed: Invalid cross-device link

2009-11-10 Thread PhilW
Well, I see and know nothing except the many udevd-work errors and the
sometimes (not frequently) delayed availability of the logical volumes.
But I'm willing to investigate further, and I already have a little bit
of experience in working (and debugging) of initial ramdisks. So if you
could tell me what to do, which information you need or in which
direction I should investigate, I would try.

[Bug 478396] Re: Installed Bindwood but nothing happens

2009-11-08 Thread PhilW
I disabled NoScript, now I keep getting the authorization request
messages the other bugs talk about. Bindwood should work with NoScript
enabled, at least by adding something to the whitelist or asking for
permission (as NoScript sometimes on websites).

[Bug 478396] [NEW] Installed Bindwood but nothing happens

2009-11-08 Thread PhilW
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bindwood

Hello,

I installed bindwood to share my firefox bookmarks. After restarting
firefox, I see bindwood in the addons list, but I cannot figure out how
to configure it so that it uploads my boomarks. I was not asked to allow
access to the keyring, and I cannot find a GUI for bindwood where I can
initiate the process of connecting it to my account.

I'm using Karmic and the firefox from repository. Addons installed are
Adblock, Firebug, Noscript and Vimperator. The apparmor provile for
firefox is only in complain mode, not in enforce mode. Other things get
synced to my Ubuntu One account just fine.

[Bug 477373] [NEW] Freezing sound after upgrade to Karmic

2009-11-07 Thread PhilW
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

I recently upgraded to Karmic from Jaunty with the update-manager. Since
then sound output is somewhat broken. Normally everything is fine, but
when an app is playing sound through pulseaudio and I change the volume
with the pulseaudio volume control or the gnome-volume-control, the
sound freezes. It continues to play the current tone, which sounds quite
ugly. This happens not immediately, but only after the volume has
changed a little bit. It goes away after more volume changes, returning
to playing the sound just fine. Rarely, this problem occurs even without
me changing the volume.

I have an ATI card with an HDMI output, which is unused, and a Hercules
Game Theater sound card with a Cirrus Logic CS 4614/22/24/30 chip.

If I force an app to play the sound directly via ALSA (and not through
the ALSA-Pulseaudio module, too!), then this does not occur.

I added my user to the groups "pulse" and "pulse-access" (including
logging out and in again), this did not change anything.

I downgraded all pulseaudio packages to the version from Jaunty and it
did not occur.

Running the pulseaudio daemon in system mode does not help.

If I run the pulseaudio daemon in a terminal with "-vv", I see the
following messages on startup, which look suspicious to me:

I: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) fehlgeschlagen: Operation not
permitted
I: main.c: setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) fehlgeschlagen: Operation not
permitted
I: core-util.c: Failed to acquire high-priority scheduling: No such file or
directory
I: core-util.c: Successfully enabled SCHED_RR scheduling for thread, with
priority 4, which is lower than the requested 5.

During playback messages like the following appear in the syslog
sometimes:

Nov 6 19:09:58 pc-philipp pulseaudio[3233]: ratelimit.c: 12 events
suppressed

Nov 6 19:10:01 pc-philipp pulseaudio[3233]: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to
write new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write!
Nov 6 19:10:01 pc-philipp pulseaudio[3233]: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is a
bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_cs46xx'. Please report this issue to the ALSA
developers.
Nov 6 19:10:01 pc-philipp pulseaudio[3233]: alsa-sink.c: We were woken up with
POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value
< min_avail

Attached is an output from pulseaudio -vv where I played a file through
Rhythmbox and fiddled with the volume so that the problem occured.

too?

[Bug 444563] Re: rename(/dev//.udev-tmp, /dev//) failed: Invalid cross-device link

2009-10-30 Thread PhilW
This bug affects me, too. I upgraded yesterday from Jaunty to Karmic
with the update-manager. Since then, a lot of these udev errors appear
while booting, but boot is successful. I'm using LVM for everything
except /boot, but without snapshots (but with mirrored LVs). If you need
more information, I'll be happy to supply logs etc, whatever you need.

I consider this bug important, because after this messages, there is a
time in which nothing happens. This might lead to users thinking that
Ubuntu does not work on their machine.

Yes, sometimes it helps to close the fullscreen window and reopen it.
But this is not reliable, sometimes I needed do this 10 times or more to
have a real fullscreen without panels.

[Bug 88377] Re: Suspend to disk fails: image_size too small

2009-07-06 Thread PhilW
I can confirm that hibernation does not work with 1GB of RAM and the default
setting of /sys/power/image_size. Setting the latter to 0 helps. The kernel
documentation states that the kernel will then use the smallest possible value.
I see no negative effects in this.
As todays computer probably mostly have >= 1GB RAM, IMHO the default value of
this setting should be changed. What is necessary to let this happen? I am
willing to provide additional information (logs etc.) if necessary.

[Bug 289852] Re: intrepid: printing very slow

2009-04-28 Thread PhilW
Hi,

I'm having the same problem since I updated to Jaunty from Intrepid
yesterday.

I tried to print 19 pages with text produced from pdflatex on my Canon
Pixma IP4000R via Ethernet. The driver is "CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.3
Simplified".

Evince produced a 24 MB print job, which took long to submit into the
queue and ages sitting there with gs and socket at 100% cpu.
rastertogutenprint was also a process with high cpu. Eventually it got
put on hold (don't know why) and I continued it. Then I cancelled it
because it took to long.

Acroread produced a 1.3 MB job, which also had 100% cpu in the queue. I
cancelled it, too.

xpdf submitted 650 KB to another printer, from which I moved the job to
the printer above. It then started printing immediately.

After this success I tried okular, which submitted 4 MB. The printer
also started printing immediately.

I hope this helps somehow. I can try another driver (turboprint) and
connection via USB, too, if you want.

PhilW
