[Bug 1971434] Re: Display powersave only blanks, but does not turn off
Thanks for working on this! The discussion about unplug events being the cause made me wonder whether this is also the source of a similar problem I have as well: On my ThinkPad T14 with Ubuntu 22.04 and Wayland, closing the lid wakes the notebook up from sleep mode. I.e., if I enter standby and then close the lid, the notebook wakes up. If I directly close the lid, the notebook enters standby mode and stays there. Of course it could also be that this is due to a different cause, but I wanted to mention it here in case it helps. I let "udevadm monitor" run through a "standby - close lid - wake up" cycle but the only "bind|unbind|add|remove" messages that it showed were for USB devices (plus some "change" messages for drm/card1 and my NVME disk). For the problem with the HDMI monitor on my other machine I could produce an event log tomorrow if desired, or perform other debugging you would like to see. For me the problem also happens reliably on my other machine. (Though interestingly, on the monitor where my main machine shows the problem, my ThinkPad does not show it. Both run Ubuntu 22.04 Wayland and have an AMD GPU.) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1971434 Title: Display powersave only blanks, but does not turn off To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mutter/+bug/1971434/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1971093] Re: collectd missing in 22.04/jammy
I have tried out the packages from Jammy proposed, and they work fine here (Ubuntu 22.04, many collectd plugins active, forwarding to a Graphite server). Debian sid also has collectd 5.12.0-9 with the exact same changelog as the Ubuntu package (https://metadata.ftp- master.debian.org/changelogs//main/c/collectd/collectd_5.12.0-9_changelog) with no recent bugs in their tracker. So there does not seem to be a reason why Ubuntu should not ship that package. Anway, if a package is shipped and later removed from the package repository for whatever reason, I would expect to be able to find the reason for this somewhere, e.g., here in the bug tracker. [Bug 1947718] Re: overlay: permission regression in 5.4.0.89.93 due to fix for CVE-2021-3732
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Since kernel 5.4.0-89.100 on Focal and 4.15.0-159.167 on Bionic I can no longer mount an overlay filesystem over directories like / in a user namespace. With kernel versions 5.4.0-88.99 and 4.15.0-158.166, respectively, this still works. An easy way to test this is the following command: mkdir /tmp/test /tmp/test/upper /tmp/test/work unshare -m -U -r mount -t overlay none / -o lowerdir=/,upperdir=/tmp/test/upper,workdir=/tmp/test/work On an older kernel, this works and outputs nothing. On the affected kernels, it outputs mount: /: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on none, missing codepage or helper program, or other error. I strongly suspect that this is due to commit "ovl: prevent private clone if bind mount is not allowed" (https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/427215d85e8d1476da1a86b8d67aceb485eb3631), which is supposed to fix CVE-2021-3732 and was backported to the affected Ubuntu kernels. This would likely mean that also all other supported Ubuntu versions are affected and also upstream kernel (but I did not test this). My testing indicates that the mount problem exists whenever I want to use a directory as lowerdir that has some mountpoints below. For example, using / or /dev as lowerdir does not work, but lowerdir=/dev/shm works even on the affected kernels. Of course I can understand the problem of CVE-2021-3732, but the current fix is clearly a regression for legitimate behavior. My use case is that I want to create a container for sandboxing purposes where I want to mount overlays inside a user+mount namespace over the whole visible filesystem hierarchy. (Note that in this use case, I iterate over all mount points and create an overlay mount for each existing mount point, I do not expect a single overlay mount to have meaningful cross-mountpoint behavior. So my use case is not affected by the security problem. But for this I still need to be able to create overlay mounts for all mount points, including non-leave mountpoints.) We also experience this bug on Focal. It is a real issue for us because unattended-upgrades relies on the `users` command to determine logged-in users. This means that on Focal, unattended-upgrades reboots forcefully and kills running tmux sessions even if instructed not to with `Unattended-Upgrade::Automatic-Reboot-WithUsers "false";` in the apt config. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1890406 Title: tmux sessions don't show up with who, users, ... I noticed that in the list of affected packages in the bug metadata Bionic is not mentioned. Will the fix also be backported there? ** Tags removed: verification-needed-focal ** Tags added: verification-done-focal -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1900141 Title: overlay: permission regression in 5.4.0-51.56 due to patches related to CVE-2020-16120 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1900141/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1900141] Re: overlay: permission regression in 5.4.0-51.56 due to patches related to CVE-2020-16120
I noticed that the changelog of the kernel package 5.4.0-50.55~18.04.1 for Bionic now also includes the two additional patches, and indeed I can confirm that on Bionic with kernel 5.4.0-54-generic the regression was now also introduced. Is there an update whether it will be possible to solve this regression? It breaks our container runtime unfortunately. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1900141 Title: overlay: permission regression in 5.4.0-51.56 due to patches related to CVE-2020-16120 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1900141/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1900141] [NEW] overlay: permission regression in 5.4.0-51.56 due to patches related to CVE-2020-16120
Public bug reported: We use unprivileged user namespaces with overlay mounts for containers. After recently upgrading our Focal kernels to 5.4.0-51.56 this breaks, one cannot access files through the overlay mount in the container anymore. This is very likely caused by some of the patches that were added in relation to CVE-2020-16120. The following commands allow to reproduce the problem when executed as an arbitrary non-root user: mkdir /tmp/test /tmp/test/upper /tmp/test/work /tmp/test/usr unshare -m -U -r /bin/sh -c "mount -t overlay none /tmp/test/usr -o lowerdir=/usr,upperdir=/tmp/test/upper,workdir=/tmp/test/work; ls -l /tmp/test/usr/bin/id; file /tmp/test/usr/bin/id; /tmp/test/usr/bin/id" The output when broken is this: -rwxr-xr-x 1 nobody nogroup 47480 Sep 5 2019 /tmp/test/usr/bin/id /tmp/test/usr/bin/id: executable, regular file, no read permission /bin/sh: 1: /tmp/test/usr/bin/id: Operation not permitted The expected output is this: -rwxr-xr-x 1 nobody nogroup 43224 Jan 18 2018 /tmp/test/usr/bin/id /tmp/test/usr/bin/id: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, ... uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root),65534(nogroup) These commands create a user namespace and within it mount an overlay of /usr to /tmp/test/usr and then try to access something in it. This works on Ubuntu Bionic with kernel 4.15.0-121.123 (note that this already includes a fix for CVE-2020-16120) and on kernel 5.4.0-48.52 but is broken on kernel 5.4.0-51.56, no matter whether on Bionic or Focal. So I strongly suspect that not the actual security fixes for CVE-2020-16120 are the cause, but one of the following two patches that according to the changelogs were applied in the same revision but only to 5.4, not to 4.15: ovl: call secutiry hook in ovl_real_ioctl() ovl: check permission to open real file The mail with the announcement (https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss- security/2020/10/13/6) lists these two commits as separate from the actual security fixes ("may be desired or necessary"). Is it possible to revert these two changes or fix them such that our unprivileged containers work again on Ubuntu kernel 5.4? Or is there a workaround that I can add to my container solution such that this use case works again? [Bug 1793458] Re: Overlayfs in user namespace leaks directory content of inaccessible directories
I find the demand to test the fix within 5 days, combined with the threat of dropping the patch otherwise, unreasonable. In my original report of this security problem I have already provided a script that allows to reproduce the problem and check if it still exists. Requiring an answer within 5 days is too short, after all people can be on holiday or just busy for other reasons. And even if I as the original submitter wouldn't respond at all, this is a real security problem in Ubuntu that was already confirmed. Are you really going to drop the patch and let CVE-2018-6559 stay unfixed forever? Maybe I will find the time to test it on Bionic, but I will certainly not install a different version of Ubuntu than the one I am currently running. I hope that this is all just a misunderstanding and the message does not apply to security problems. In this case please consider changing the message or improving the process such that this confusion will be avoided for future reports. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1793458 Title: Overlayfs in user namespace leaks directory content of inaccessible directories To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1793458/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1633413] Re: Obsolete authenthication requests for WiFi
I agree that this is very inconvenient. For example, I have a system at home that I leave unattended but I need it to reconnect automatically to my wifi, because I need to access it from abroad. If there is a disconnect and it can't reconnect immediately (e.g., because of a router reboot), the password dialog will prevent network manager from connecting to my wifi again, effectively killing my access to this machine. So I would say that even if network manager needs to ask for the password because it can't know whether the password is correct, this should not block all other operations: network manager should try connecting to the wifi in the background (and if it succeeds, hide the dialog). This is also asked here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=680625 Maybe https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1407907, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1316634 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/1010745 are related? [Bug 1619677] Re: Intel Skylake video: no output on VGA port
We are also experiencing such problems on a range of different notebooks with an Intel HD Graphics 520 (Skylake generation). We tested multiple Fujitsu Lifebook E746 with their onboard VGA connector and a ThinkPad T460s with different adapters from DisplayPort, under both Ubuntu 16.04 with kernel 4.4 and Ubuntu 16.10 with kernel 4.8. In a few cases (certain combinations of notebooks and projectors) we got a working VGA connection, bust mostly not. If a connection could be established, it was stable. It seems that VGA ports on Linux with Skylake GPUs are completely unreliable. According to http://www.anandtech.com/show/9483/intel-skylake-review- 6700k-6600k-ddr4-ddr3-ipc-6th-generation/4, Skylake has no internal VGA port anymore and all VGA connectors are build using adapters, which could explain this (worse timings and signal quality for example). However, Windows 10 on the same notebooks never had a problem with VGA output in our tests, so it seems that there is still some influence of the OS. This is a major problem for our users because they absolutely rely on a working VGA connector, because when giving talks (for example on academic conferences) it is still the norm that only a VGA connection to the projector is available. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1619677 Title: Intel Skylake video: no output on VGA port To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-lts-xenial/+bug/1619677/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I did not test overlay over NFS3. I still cannot successfully write to files that exist in the lower layer ("Operation not supported"), only to new files, but I guess this is not in the scope of this bug report. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1566471 Title: kernel oops: NULL pointer dereference in nfs_inode_attach_open_context+0x37/0x70 [nfs] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1566471/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1566471] Re: kernel oops: NULL pointer dereference in nfs_inode_attach_open_context+0x37/0x70 [nfs]
I also experience this problem using the Xenial kernel 4.4.0-18.34~14.04.1 on Ubuntu 14.04. I can even reproduce it as a non-root user by creating an overlay mount inside a user namespace. After mounting an overlay over an NFS mount, I can successfully traverse existing directories and create, write, read, and remove new files. As soon as I try to read an existing file (from the lower layer NFS mount), the application that attempts the read dies and the syslog shows the kernel bug. The system continues running afterwards. [Bug 1311316] Re: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock
I cannot imagine how a missing password input field in the lock screen could be related to an LDAP configuration issue on our side. If the authentication would fail after entering the password, then yes, of course this could be such a problem. But a password field should always be shown by the unlock screen, regardless of the authentication backend. Also our LDAP configuration is working for several years now without problems. Only since the upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 this problem with the lock screen has started appearing. All other applications, including the login screen (lightdm) are working fine. By the way, we have a dual monitor setup, too. Our home file systems are on an NFS fileserver, mounted using automount and with root_squash enabled (this means that root does not have full access to my home directory, but only the same rights as all other accounts). [Bug 1311316] Re: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock
We also have this problem on several machines, and I hope I can contribute to getting it fixed. Removing light-locker fixed the "double unlock" problem, but not this problem. The machine is a fully up-to-date Ubuntu 14.04 with LDAP authentication. The output of ls -l /sbin/unix_chkpwd is -rwxr-sr-x 1 root shadow 35536 Jan 31 2014 /sbin/unix_chkpwd I cannot post full auth.log because of personal data, but I will try to remember to grap the last lines of the log the next time the problem appears. The problem occurs only randomly and not very often (maybe once per week). It happens less often now that the "double unlock" problem is fixed, I guess simply because I have to enter my password less often now. A reliable work around is to switch to a text console, login as the same user, and run "unity --replace". This restores the password input field. After unlocking, the panels are missing but I can fix this by opening a terminal window and running "unity --replace" there. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1311316 Title: After locking screen there is no input field to type password for unlock To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1311316/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1341628] Re: [needs-packaging]openjdk-8 in 14.04
During the life time of 14.04, we expect many Java applications to switch to and rely on Java 8 (given the nice programming benefits this offers, the switch probably happens faster than for e.g. Java 7). We are considering making this change for our own open-source Java application, too. [Bug 1315464] [NEW] Cannot login if ~/.cache is dead symlink
Public bug reported: On Ubuntu 14.04, graphical logins fail if ~/.cache is a dead symlink. Only the background picture and the mouse cursor is shown during login, and nothing else is started. Console logins still work. This happens independently of the login manager (tested lightdm, gdm, and kdm) and the session (tested unity, gnome-shell, kde, and xfce). Therefore I guess upstart (the "init --user" process) is the problem, as it tries to log in to ~/.cache/upstart/. My version of upstart is 1.12.1-0ubuntu4. Steps to reproduce: mv .cache cache.bak ln -s /non-existent .cache Try logging in. I would expect that logging in just works without using the .cache directory in this case (e.g., not logging to .cache/upstart), or that the dead symlink would be silently removed and the directory created, or that an error message would appear and login would be aborted. The current situation is bad because it is very hard to find the cause of the login problem (I just stumbled upon it by accident). [Bug 1008344] Re: checks "admin" group membership instead of querying polkit
Please, drop the is_admin check completely. I said it already: "you cannot know whether the user knows the password of an admin account if you do not ask for it". If you try guessing, you will inevitable guess wrong sometimes and frustrate the user. This is also true if polkit does the guessing. If you do not want to confuse user with admin buttons, then, either put a lock symbol on all of them, of grey them out and add a single unlock button just like the time settings dialog. For the check for missing packages, you can just add a button "check for missing packages", or run the check when the user clicks the unlock button. Or you convert the popup that asks the user into a text and button in the language dialog, something along "Missing packages detect. [ Install them]". This solution is easy to implement, does not require new polkit features, has a clear, obvious, ui, and does not get in the way of users by hiding things from them they would like to see. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1008344 Title: checks "admin" group membership instead of querying polkit To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/policykit/+bug/1008344/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1008344] Re: checks "admin" group membership instead of querying polkit
I would get rid of greying out these buttons completely. You will never know whether the user is able to authenticate as admin, because you cannot know whether the user knows the password of an admin account if you do not ask for it. In all cases where the buttons are greyed out, but the user would know how to authenticate, this will create frustration. Furthermore, there is no advantage of having the buttons greyed out. If you want to signal to the user that they require more rights, you can put a lock symbol on them (isn't there an example in the time settings dialogue for this?). This solution would be the easiest to implement and to use. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1008344 Title: checks "admin" group membership instead of querying polkit To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/1008344/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1008344] Re: [Precise] Language selector won't allow me to install languages
@Gunnar: As I said in the bug report, this is an installation which uses user accounts and groups from an LDAP directory. There is an LDAP group for all network-wide admins, and I am in this group. This group is enabled for sudo and policykit admin rights in the appropriate config files, and I expect all users within this group to have all available permissions. I certainly don't want to edit code files in /usr/lib to give myself additional rights. I also don't want do put all admin users into the local groups "sudo" or "admin", because this defeats the whole purpose of an LDAP directory (i.e., I would have to change files on all machines in the network whenever there is a new admin or one leaves). It is also not an option to distribute the groups "sudo" and "admin" via LDAP, because then nothing works on the machine in an emergency when the LDAP server is down (it is generally not recommended to distribute any uids and gids < 1000 via LDAP for this reason). You are also wrong about the "way that is compatible with how Ubuntu handles these things". Ubuntu uses sudo and policykit, and I am using these ways. Note that language-selector does not need to know about the existence of any files (and should not), it should just ask policykit whether the user has admin rights. That's the way all other applications work (if they don't use sudo). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1008344 Title: [Precise] Language selector won't allow me to install languages To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/language-selector/+bug/1008344/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1008344] Re: [Precise] Language selector won't allow me to install languages
Ok, so I added the group I am in as an AdminIdentity in this file. However, in the language selector, the relevant buttons are still grayed out. I am very confident that my change to /etc/polkit-1/localauthority.conf.d/ is right, because it actually changed something for the user account administration that is also part of gnome-control-center. Previously this would ask me for the root password, now I am able to unlock the settings there with my own password (or one of the other accounts in the new admin group). [Bug 922458] [NEW] Firefox crashes X server when viewing large image
Public bug reported: I was trying to view this image in Firefox: http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/618486main_earth_full.jpg It is quite large (8000x8000 px). When the image was loaded to about 50%, my X server suddenly crashed, showing me the console for a second and then showing the login screen. This happened again when I logged in and started Firefox, which tried to load the image again. I didn't try more often or with similarly large images. The smaller variants of this image (available at http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/image_feature_2159.html) pose no problem. I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. My graphics card is the internal one of an Intel Sandy Bridge CPU (GT1). Just before this I installed all available updates. [Bug 887904] Re: [Oneiric] Ecryptfs kills 3D support of my video driver
@Dustin The pause on login is much much longer than manually doing a ecryptfs-mount-private. The latter takes about half a second of CPU time, whereas the pause on login is much longer (I guess around 10s, although I didn't measure it). So I think its not only the key strengthening. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/887904 Title: [Oneiric] Ecryptfs kills 3D support of my video driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ecryptfs-utils/+bug/887904/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 887904] Re: [Oneiric] Ecryptfs kills 3D support of my video driver
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected staging ** Description changed: I have a machine which I upgraded from Natty to Oneiric a week ago. It uses the onboard graphics card of Intel SandyBridge CPUs, and Unity as well as HDMI audio output worked fine. A few days ago I installed ecryptfs-utils and set up a encrypted directory. I did not use the login password, but a separate password, and I move the .Private directory to another partition (creating a symlink in my home directory). I did no login or logout since that. Yesterday I was fiddling with my screen resolutions and had some problems, so I tried to login/logout and reboot. Now a lot of weird things happen: First, when I login, after entering my password and hitting enter, there is a pause of several seconds, during which nothing seems to happen, but the lightdm process takes 100% CPU. Second, 3D support of my video driver is suddenly gone. The /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test says that software rendering is used. In dmesg, there are messages about "invalid framebuffer ids" and "composite sync not supported". Of couse unity is not working (only unity-2d). Third, all my audio devices are gone in the output of aplay -L (only the alsa default device that points to PulseAudio is there). If I run aplay -L on a terminal (not within X), all devices are there! Of course sound is also not working. I verified that ecryptfs is the problem. If I remove/rename the .ecryptfs folder in my home directory, i can log in fine (without pause), and 3D and audio are working. If I move the folder back, and try to login again, the problems are there. I do not even need to reboot between the logins. In one login my graphics card seems to be completely unsupported, and in the next login it is the usually well supported Intel graphics card again. [Bug 887904] [NEW] [Oneiric] Ecryptfs kills 3D support of my video driver
Public bug reported: I have a machine which I upgraded from Natty to Oneiric a week ago. [Bug 884336] Re: [Oneiric] HDMI output does not work immediately
It also works if I switch the Pulseaudio output configuration to "Digital Stereo (HDMI) output" and back while the sound is playing. As soon as the first change is done, I hear sound (in stereo, of course) and after the second change I have nice 5.1 sound. So Pulseaudio is clearly able to do everything necessary to have sound, it just needs to do it automatically when starting playback. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/884336 Title: [Oneiric] HDMI output does not work immediately To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/884336/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 884336] [NEW] [Oneiric] HDMI output does not work immediately
Public bug reported: In Oneiric, the output of 5.1 sound (not AC3 passthrough, but multi- channel PCM) via the HDMI connector of my onboard Intel graphics card is finally working. This is really great! For this to work, I have configured Pulseaudio to use the "Digital Surround 5.1 (HDMI) Output". The HDMI output of my computer is connected to a 5.1 receiver. However, there is one nuisance: Whenever I start playing sound on the computer (e.g., rhythmbox or VLC, both playing via PulseAudio), I hear no sound. On my receiver I have to re-select the input source for the computer, which seems to initiate a HDMI handshake (it lasts 3 seconds). Only after this I am able to hear sound. If I press pause and continue in Rhythmbox, the sound continues fine. If I stop and restart Rhythmbox, I have to do the above procedure again. The same is true for VLC and probably for all other players. While playing around, I have noticed that sound is also working after killing pulseaudio while playing something in Rhythmbox. When the connection to Pulseaudio is killed, Rhythmbox tries a fallback to ALSA. As the Pulseaudio daemon was immediately restarted, this will result in Rhythmbox being connected via the ALSA plugin (before the connection was direct). It seems that Pulseaudio is doing the necessary things here, because after this I do hear sound (as long as Rhythmbox runs). However, this trick does not work for other players like VLC which don't fall back to ALSA. Note that while for me this is just a nuisance, it may be a real blocker for other users. As long as you don't try to fiddle with the receiver inputs while playing sound on the computer, you hear absolutely nothing via HDMI. This includes the sounds from the speaker test dialog of Pulseaudio. I guess a lot of users would give up and think that HDMI output is broken in Ubuntu.
