[Bug 258026] [NEW] Kernel Panic on suspend, 2.6.24-21-generic
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kernel-image-2.6.24-21-generic-di This problem began with kernel 2.6.24-20, and has not been fixed in this kernel update. Kernel panics on suspend, both by pressing [fn]+[f5] or closing the laptop lid. I reboot back into kernel 2.6.24-19-generic, and the problem disappears. This is repeatable, not sporadic. Note also that the Applications => System Tools => Report a Problem... utility does not work. It seems to start, a label shows up in the bottom bar, and then it exits without starting. So I am reporting this way. [Bug 198833] Re: OOo writer locks up the whole system
I have not had this problem in several weeks. I think it is because I have done substantial other config adjustments. I am running Ubu 7.10, but now I am using Envy because I have an NVIDIA card that did not handle resume from s2ram well without the actual NVIDIA driver. [Bug 258026] Re: Kernel Panic on suspend, 2.6.24-21-generic
Hi acidicX, can you explain how to install this newer kernel? I am worried that I could trash my system irreparably if I do this wrong. Using BASH, do we enter: $ sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.27-2-generic ...and then assume that apt will identify the necessary module updates? Are there other commands we should enter, like autocleaning the apt repository? I do this too rarely to remember the proper way. -- Kernel Panic on suspend, 2.6.24-21-generic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/258026 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 258026] Re: Kernel Panic on suspend, 2.6.24-21-generic
Alas, .27 did not work for my hardware; neither the video chipset nor the wifi hardware were detected properly. Thanks for the directions above, though. I tried following the directions on the download webpage itself, and added: deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu intrepid main to my /etc/apt/sources.list, and then did sudo apt-get update. Not only did that not add the kernel image, but it prepared apt to update the whole system to Intrepid! So I deleted that line from my .list, re-updated apt, and then downloaded the package directly. What gDebi told me allayed my concerns: the 22 MB package contains all the associated updated modules necessary to enable kernel .27 to work. Too bad they not detect/configure to my hardware. -- Kernel Panic on suspend, 2.6.24-21-generic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/258026 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 258026] Re: Kernel Panic on suspend, 2.6.24-21-generic
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 251252 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/251252 I am commenting here only because I cannot determine if the kernel panic is caused by unloading the Intel PROWireless; I just know that it happens at s2ram, and perhaps that is the module that causes it. AcidicX, I was able to boot the machine with .27, yes. But video returned to low res, wifi indicator light showed red, I don't think sound worked, and s2ram panicked the kernel with what seemed to be the same set of indicators. Since I do have the Intel PROWireless 3945, I may just have to defer to the other fellows here and assume that unmounting of the wifi module panics the kernel. But this leaves me worried about future video incompatibilities as well, because my NVIDIA chipset has caused troubles before with s2ram (Ubu 7.04, I think). -- Kernel Panic on suspend, 2.6.24-21-generic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/258026 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

...follow-up: it looks like Aleksandr's "git" command downloads the source to your home directory, unless you have configured bash pathnames in some unusual way. [Bug 805752] Re: fontforge crashed with SIGSEGV in GImageRead_Png(): no change rebuild required
hramrach or sladen, can you please post the command-line sequence for rebuilding the package? As a non-tech user, I fear it could take me hours to figure out how to get ForntForge to work. This page comes up right near the top with the Google string "Ubuntu 11.10 FontForge," so this is where us noobs will find the fix. Master,Headphones,Speakers and PCM faders flash continuously, the db gain move from 0,00 to -46,50. [Bug 484677] Re: init: ureadahead-other main process terminated with status 4
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 522197 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/522197 Gabe (post #64), thank you for finally clarifying what one should do when one finds this page. Your instructions should be moved to the top of the post for all of us average users of Ubuntu who find this page via Google. That is the primary reason why I am posting at this duplicate page. The second reason I am posting here is because this is the first page that shows up when I Google "init: ureadahead main process terminated with status 5", and Scott James remnant's behavior on this page deserves some scolding. He seems arrogantly dismissive of anyone who is not a thoroughly experienced *nix user, and therefore he does not belong in the Ubuntu community. His snobbish dismissal of other peoples' confusion does not belong in a distro intended for busy people trying to get other work done, people who are puzzled by weird messages when they boot. Thank you Ernst (post #55) for finally including the Bug number of the problem that Scott repeatedly alluded to without actually helping us. Indeed, the ureadahead warning message may not be related to boot problems. However, if the boot failure happens shortly after the prompt occurs, it is the last thing users will see on-screen, and thus we will suspect that it has something to do with boot failure, simply because some process posted it to the screen before the boot process hangs. So us normal users should be advised to look elsewhere, as Gabe has finally done. This ureadahead error message emerged for me with the update to 10.10. I will chase it down at https://bugs.launchpad.net/upstart/+bug/522197, and hope that the older fixes are still relevant. For other, mortal users, here is another thing that may help: on my netbook, certain processes will stop and wait unless there is some mouse or keyboard input. I have found that the safest input to get things booting again is to press the key; wiggling the mouse or touching the trackpad may cause the cursor to freeze once the desktop manager loads up (GDM, at least). -- init: ureadahead-other main process terminated with status 4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/484677 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 703531] [NEW] Gnome image viewer occationally fails to display image from dektop
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: eog lsb_release -rd says Ubuntu is 10.10 About Ubuntu says strangely : Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal - released in April 2011 and supported until October 2012. Eye of GNOME is 2.32.0 When double-clicking on an image stored on my desktop the image viewer fails to start. The circular "hourglass" symbol keeps on rotating for a while then stops. Right-clicking on the image and selecting Open with Image Viewer will start image viewer and seemingly has opened the file but no image is shown. The happens after first boot. If I open the Desktop directory in Nautilus (Places -> Desktop from the menu) and then double-click on the image it is displayed ok. [Bug 438318] Re: [karmic] no sound on toshiba nb205
Hi, this is Pietro checking back in to confirm that Kristofer's fix worked for me in 9.10, and works (and is still necessary) in 10.04. At least for my Toshiba Netbook NB205. So if you have installed or just updated to 10.04 Lucid, here are instructions to get sound working the noob way: Go to: Applications > Accessories > Terminal. This will open what is called a "shell" window, and in the new window it will display [your-userna...@[your-computer-name] followed by a prompt. Here you can type in the following text: sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf Hit , and this command starts the text editor "Gedit," and directs it to open the file "alsa-base.conf" within the directories "/etc/modprobe.d". Once Gedit opens the file, scroll down to the bottom of the file and paste (or type) in the following text: options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto Save, quit Gedit, type "exit" in the Terminal window, close other apps, and reboot. Later you can change the Preferences in the Terminal program so that you can cut-and-paste shell commands from web pages like this, But I figure you want to get up-and-running right now, and will tinker with other configurations as needed later. Seems the unresolved Emerald upgrade will keep on nagging with error messages in Synaptic or apt-get. [Bug 438318] Re: [karmic] no sound on toshiba nb205
Hi this is Pietro, still semi-noob wanting to know: If I follow Kristoffer's suggestion, and install Kernel 2.6.32 the noob way (via gdebi), will this cause a problem when updating to Lucid? 2.6.32 is not in the standard repos of Karmic (checked via Synaptic), and gdebi warns that I probably should not install a new kernel via gdebi. If this will NOT cause problems, Kristoffer, can you please advise about the most kosher way to install this newer kernel? I.e., post a sequence of shell commands, or a quick step-through via gdebi, or an adjustment to the repos for Synaptic (under Karmic) to make the system package manager aware of this minor detour from a standard install. If this WILL cause problems in updating to Lucid later this month, can you please suggest a quick way to 'undo the deviance' so that we can resume with standard system updates? Sorry if this seems off-topic, but a number of posts confirm Kristoffer's fix in post #53. And if I read them correctly, posts #70 and later suggest that we will still need this fix after Lucid is released. Thanks. -- [karmic] no sound on toshiba nb205 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438318 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 230127] Re: Sound recorder doesn't work
Dear Ubuntu, I have read dozens of pages and postings about the 'sound issues' in Ubuntu since I updated to 8.04. Glad that Skype and streaming audio on Firefox now work. But I need to record that streaming audio; so please fix whatever is needed to get GNOME Sound Recorder to work. And for those of us who have jiggered our config files to get some compromise between ALSA and PulseAudio that works for us, please provide a set of standard config-files and recommended uninstallations that enable all apps to work. Not all apps have to work at the same time, I suppose; but Firefox and Sound Recorder need to work simultaneously, and nothing should disrupt a Skype call in progress. There is plenty of philosophy-talk out there about why Ubu is switching to PA; we don't need more of that. We can Google it to find out the backstory if curious. At this point we need some generic solutions (i.e. does jackd need to be uninstalled?) so we can start hashing out any peculiarities we may have with our respective hardwares. Please create a general fixit HowTo page and link it to Ubuntu's homepage, or title it in a way that is so obvious we can all find it. This is a serious bug, and a known one. I suspect a fix exists, but several weeks of on-and-off searching and I have not found it nor indication that anyone else who has found it or created it. If we have attempted workarounds by installing Jokosher, Audacity, Ardour, and/or GTK-recordMyDesktop (none of which work), please tell us which ones are likely to have persistent incompatibilities and need to be uninstalled. -- Sound recorder doesn't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/230127 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 389040] Re: Realtek ALC272 not working in 9.04 but its working under 8.10
Hi all, I see that you have resolved for Jaunty and have moved on to Karmic. As a mezzo-newbie user, I am wondering if you could post a quick HowTo for installing the patched oga2 Kernel mentioned in comment #94? I downloaded the .deb and installed, but when I looked for it in / I could not find it. So I am not sure how to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to access this patched kernel, nor whether there is some entirely different way I should boot to use this kernel. Perhaps there is a page which explains all this and you could just post a link as a reply to this. Cheers. -- Realtek ALC272 not working in 9.04 but its working under 8.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/389040 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 389040] Re: Realtek ALC272 not working in 9.04 but its working under 8.10
Bushnoh, thanks for clarification (comment #121). Based on Chris Starling's comment #95 I installed oga2, and: 1. Playback works through built-in speaker. 2. Playback works through headphones, & built-in speaker mutes when headphones jacked in. 3. Recording through internal mic does NOT work; choppy static recorded thru both Skype test call and Gnome-sound-record. Sound Device is set to HDA Intel (ALSA mixer), all tracks turned on in Preferences, volume up. Based on Starling's comment #93, I looked in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf for "model=[whatever]", and could not find the word "model" at all. Does that need to be added? Or am I looking in the wrong place? Furthermore is it OK to keep trying to thrash out Jaunty issues, or are you all moved on to Karmic now? -- Realtek ALC272 not working in 9.04 but its working under 8.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/389040 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 362301] Re: ALL application windows only open in full-screen mode
Rustle, thank God you wrote so expressively about this! I had no idea what to even call this interface design-flaw. But your description was articulate enough that I could find this page via a search string in Google. Ah! some netbooks have enough screen resolution that we don't need auto-maximization...indeed, the idea for me (a social theorist) was to economize my learning-curve time by having my interface as similar to a big-screen interface as possible. For those of us who are NOT Linux whiz-kids, the time-cost of learning a new interface is the highest cost involved. Robert Dolby once said: "All my tubes and wires...have a look! She's tidied up, and now I can't find anything!" I would rather have the option--the readily locatable option--of disabling all the conveniences so that I can get back to my not-so- absolutely-optimal way of using my screen. My GUI! My GUI! Icky-sticky, but mine! It might help if UNR installs with some sort of a ReadMe announcement that gives us a listing of the interface differences and what they are called. -- ALL application windows only open in full-screen mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/362301 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 213240] Some news
Some news: 1) tested on another computer (a desktop) just upgraded to Hardy, and the regression is there too: given date/time is correctly stored and remembered in /proc/acpi/alarm, but the computer doesn't wake from sleep (it did under Feisty) 2) just found out (http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/ACPI_Wakeup#Using_.2Fproc.2Facpi.2Falarm) that the whole system has changed in the upstream kernel since 2.6.22. BUT Gutsy did have a 2.6.22, and it worked fine (backport?). Instead, while my laptop running Hardy has an empty /sys/class/rtc folder (while I expected to find "rtc0" in it), the desktop computer doesn't have an "rtc" folder in /sys/class at all 3) moreover, this ( http://www.nabble.com/%22New%22-Real-Time-Clock-vs-%22Old%22-RTC-in-2.6.24-(Hardy-8.04)-td15502739.html ) mail exchange makes me think that in Hardy things /should/ work as in Gutsy 4) "dmesg | grep rtc" gave me (on the laptop, but not on the desktop): [ 17.533985] /build/buildd/linux-2.6.24/drivers/rtc/hctosys.c: unable to open rtc device (rtc0) Is there any documentation page about how acpi alarm /should/ work under Hardy? -- [regression] acpi "alarm" (wake from sleep) doesn't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213240 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 60972] Re: No wireless on 64bit Acer laptops
The bug was solved in the best of ways: not by adding a package, but by adding acer_acpi (now named acer-wmi) to upstream kernel (2.6.25) and backporting it to Hardy's 2.6.24. Yes, in Hardy it should just work. Not in 2.6.17, oviously, but bug itself is fixed. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.17 (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Fix Released -- No wireless on 64bit Acer laptops https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/60972 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 215706] [NEW] wmi-acer not working (not even creating its folder in /sys)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24 As seen in bug 190677 (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/190677), acer_acpi module, now named wmi-acer, have been backported to Hardy's 2.6.24 kernel. Indeed, on my (updated 5 minutes ago) Hardy the command "lsmod | grep acer" does return: wmi_acer 11076 0 But... my wireless doesn't work. No LED enlightened, no results when scanning. In the old acer_acpi, to turn on/off wireless I play with some files in /proc/acpi/acer, while in the new wmi-acer I should (see http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.acpi.devel/28276) be playing with some files in /sys/devices/platform/acer-wmi. Instead, none of the 2 folders exists on my system. The problem MAY be related to the fact that, thought I do need this module to enable wireless (and I used it for the past 2 years), my laptop IS NOT an acer: it is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo 1650G (with a 64 bit Hardy running on it). My wireless card (but I don't think this is important) has a BCM4318 chipset, and so it runs with b43 module. Notice that if I install an old acer_acpi package (forcing its dependencies on kernel, since no Hardy version was released), wireless works smoothly. In the moment acer_acpi (from the acer_acpi package) gets modprobed, dmesg says: [ 473.956315] acer_acpi: Acer Laptop ACPI Extras version 0.11.1 [ 473.956335] acer_acpi: Detected Acer AMW0 version 2 interface [ 473.960600] Registered led device: acer_acpi:mail [ 475.343238] b43-phy0: Radio hardware status changed to ENABLED And then, "lsmod | grep acer" returns: acer_acpi 21720 0 led_class 7176 2 acer_acpi,b43 wmi_acer 11076 1 acer_acpi I can do more testing, just let me know /what/ to test. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- wmi-acer not working (not even creating its folder in /sys) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/215706 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 213240] [NEW] [regression] acpi "alarm" (wake from sleep) doesn't work
Public bug reported: Under Gutsy, I use the command (from root): echo "2008-04-07 09:30:00" > /proc/acpi/alarm to tell my PC to wake from sleep (suspend to RAM) at given date and time, and it works flawlessy (under Feisty too). Under Hardy, it doesn't at all. Some more testing showed that: 1) it's not a general sleep issue: computer doesn't wake up but I can wake it up just pressing the power button 2) even trying to wait some time doesn't help: at least I verified the PC doesn't wake up in the 2 hours before and in the 6 hours after the given date/time 3) it seems not being /just/ a problem of the ACPI call: if I make the call under Gutsy, then reboot in Hardy and put in sleep mode, it doesn't work, as if Hardy inibits it 4) it seems being /also/ a problem of the ACPI call: if I make the call under Hardy, then reboot in Gutsy and put in sleep mode, it doesn't work too. 5) in any case, the calls are registered: after a call, with "cat /proc/acpi/alarm" I can regularly see the date/time I set, and I still can see them if I reboot, if I stop the computer and restart it, if I reboot from Hardy to Gutsy, if I reboot from Gutsy to Gutsy and if I reboot from Hardy to Hardy too. My computer is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo 1650G. In the past, it had problems with sleep and fglrx drivers and it actually has some problems with sleep and b43 (I think) drivers, but (to me) those seem to be unrelated, since as said above wake from sleep never works, while sleep itself usually does. All tests were done under an up-to-date (daily) Hardy. Let me know if some more testing is needed. Anyway, I'll try to see how it works on other computers. I hope this is the right place where to file the bug. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [regression] acpi "alarm" (wake from sleep) doesn't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213240 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 23497] Re: i8042 unbind required for keyboard/mouse to be useable following suspend/resume & hibernate/resume cycle
I have almost the same problem with an HP tx2510: after suspend, keyboard and touchpad don't work; if I plug in USB keyboard and mouse, the system is absolutely usable. If I give unbind and then bind i8042 as written by Jeff Abbott, the embedded keyboard comes again to life, but the touchpad still stays unresponsive. My touchpad has a small button which should enable/disable it, and usually when using it it changes color, but in this case it is stuck too. I'm using an up-do-date 64 bit Intrepid, so kernel is 2.6.27-4. I don't have this problem with hibernation (which often doesn't work, but it's a separated issue). -- i8042 unbind required for keyboard/mouse to be useable following suspend/resume & hibernate/resume cycle https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/23497 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Also notice that: - the bug always happens when resuming from suspend - someone reported that suspending and resuming again would fix the problem: this is not my case. On my HP tx2510, bug was solved (both keyboard and touchpad) only by following instructions of post http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5220536&postcount=19. This fix should be integrated in acpi. [Bug 221007] Re: [patch] bad interpreter (python 2.4) given for pygtk-demo
Thank you very much for your answer. By "hardcoded" I meant that it is in the binary package's python script, not obviously in the source. Since the package has python 2.4 in build-depends (and that @PYTHON@ seems to mean preferably python2.4), it necessary happens every time the package is compiled. Anyway, I removed the "hardcoded" word from the changelog, to kill any ambiguity. Since my experience is quite poor in python packaging, I did had some doubts on the "cleanness" of the patch, and I thank you for pointing that "env python" is bad, I didn't know. However: - my patch does fix in a reliable way a package that has a _big_ bug that renders it inusable (since Gutsy, if I recall correctly!) - I frankly don't know much about makefiles and absolutely have not time now to learn. If this is possible to send this perfectly working hack to Intrepid, I can work on a cleaner fix for Intrepid+1 - I think that your idea of modifying the build process seems cleaner because it can be sent to upstream as a patch, but I'm not totally sure notifying upstream has any sense. The build process ensures python 2.4 is there before hardcoding it; it's an Ubuntu (/Debian) problem if you compile with python 2.4 present and then you want to run it without. It's a guess, please tell me if I'm wrong (I mean: if "/usr/python2.4" in a python script is bad by itself). Anyway, the patch I'm uploading replaces "env python" "python" and removes the "hardcoded" word from the changelog. I really hope this is OK, because a such simple but important bug not fixed along 3 releases would be something quite ridiculous. If someone else can do now something better, perfect. ** Attachment added: "Debdiff for pygtk-2.13.0-0ubuntu3" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/17880680/pygtk-2.13.0-0ubuntu3.debdiff -- [patch] bad interpreter (python 2.4) given for pygtk-demo https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221007 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
