[Bug 1874976] [NEW] Chosen ubuntu partition bootloader on GPT disk
Public bug reported: Because I already have Fedora installed on my computer, I have chosen partition of Ubuntu to contain boot loader. I expected to boot ubuntu by chain loading from Fedora. I want my bootloader untouched on disk loading. Had my disk custom assigned, partitions kept. However, during installation, grub installation failed. I selected continue without grub installation. But that failed whole installation. Expected warning to show, telling I have to fix bootloading manually or retry. It might also stop me from choosing partition as bootloader, if GPT cannot support it. [Bug 425830] Re: Media buttons don't work
I have similar problem with Amarok. I have working multimedia keys when amarok is focused. But i don't really understand, why do i have to run shortcut configuration and for each key, press media key, and assign it to action. You see, there is Media play, it suggests it is used to run play. There is Media next, and surprise, most users would use to for next track. So, i wish that keys would be there predefined. Amarok allows more than one shortcut for one operation, that is good. So please, predefine known media keys related to amarok for basic functions. I understand there might be slight problem with play/pause or play recognition, but let it be user configurable. Please, use some smart defaults for those having multimedia keyboards with keys on them. I would like to see system like gnome has, where media keys are handled by metacity and multimedia players can share global keys. I only ask, when amarok has focus, let it handle media keys by default how users might expect, if not global media keys are handled instead. -- Media buttons don't work https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/425830 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 173652] Re: Unable to adjust screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks, Intel GMA adapter
Please concentrate on fixing correct way of backlight control instead of writing custom scripts. Instead, report please if on correct FN keys it does move backlight bar with OSD and if it dimmed backlight or only bar changed without changing brightness. I report on my model, using live CD downloaded today, hotkeys does work out of the box pretty nice. It does show backlight OSD, it does move the bar in correct way. After login, it does not work, because i have to switch xrandr control to other method. I have tried all four and all were working but default one: kernel. So i am subjecto to bug #176888 also. After switching xrandr. it does work. I am including script to gather some (maybe) needed information to solve this problem. We have to figure out what models need xrandr modification and what do not. Please secify your model, exact card revision and status of working before and after xrandr changing to native. I found also some problem, but applet from gnome-power-manager applet called gnome-brightness-applet. Until i change method using xrandr, it does respond, moves bar up or down. It does not however dim the screen. After xrandr, when i try raise or lower brightness using applet, all desktop hangs. I can still switch to text terminal or use control+alt+backspace to terminate X, but no keys or clicking work in any application, nor can i switch apps using alt+tab. It does hang whole desktop, key do work, but i can only kill X server using backspace and ctrl+alt combo or switch to console. On my system, compiz is enabled by default with simple effects. [Bug 274147] [NEW] Stop using obsolete sonypi for Sony Vaio laptops
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: hotkey-setup Sonypi is obsolete module. At least that is written in drivers/misc/sony-laptop.c module. They both control same thing, but sony-laptop can support modern controllers also. it has compatibility option. SonyPI does not do anything on my vaio FZ210C, but sony-laptop does. Sony laptop has parameter compat, which should enable legacy compatibilty. Instead of loading both sonypi and sony-laptop, load only modprobe sony-laptop compat=1 that should do the trick. [Bug 237118] [NEW] ifplugd does stop on suspend, but does not start again with resume
Public bug reported: Hello. I am using ifplugd daemon for controling my ethernet card on my laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-FZ210C, but i believe that does not matter). It worked very well in gutsy. But it stopped working in hardy somehow and i cannot find what is a problem. I have in /etc/network/interfaces: iface eth0 inet dhcp wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.wired.conf wpa-driver wired #auto eth0 I am attaching part of log file, made by grep ifplug /var/log/daemon.log /tmp/ifplug-daemon.log command. I havent found anything interesting in /var/log/daemon.log or else, but i can offer you any log if needed. Problem is, after suspend to ram it does end. It is stopped, but dont know what does it. I found /etc/apm/other.d/50ifplugd, but it i dont know if that is called or when. In /etc/default/ifplugd, i have INTERFACES=eth0 HOTPLUG_INTERFACES= ARGS=-q -f -u0 -d10 -w -I SUSPEND_ACTION=none It was SUSPEND_ACTION=stop, but i replaced it in hope it will not finish always. It didnt work, it still does terminate on suspend, but does not start on resume. I have to do sudo /etc/init.d/ifplugd start after every suspend, and i am not happy with that. I can always make some script in /etc/acpi/resume.d/something and get it started. But i believe better way would be not to terminate the daemon. But i dont know where is that done, grep haven't not found for me. Oh, and i recall that used to work pretty well in gutsy. That is regression, it does not work in hardy as expected. I need wpa supplicant in university and i dont know better way for laptop. This way it does remove network connection if i unplug the cable, and i want that. My last post was not related to acpi. I wanted to know, if nvclock does need working Xserver to operate. I tried basic things on my geforce card, but it does not support what i want to try. So. Please test this command in terminal: sudo su # make sure you do not have full backlight, you want to increase it /usr/bin/nvclock -S +10 # report if that did wrote anything, and if that changed backlight. It should /usr/bin/nvclock -S -10 # did it lower backlight again? Did it write some error? export DISPLAY= HOME=/root # now we dont have access to X server /usr/bin/nvclock -S +10 # does it still work? does it print some error now? exit If all does work, try ctrl+alt+f1, and login there as user. then make it from sudo su to exit again from text console, and see if it does still work. please try one command after one by hand, and see what it does. You have mapped it well to acpi event. If you changed event files in /etc/acpi/events with DISPLAY sudo ..., please put back there what i wrote about 5 post before. It does execute right thing, but it is crashing. I think you should create bug report for nvclock package, as it did Segmentation fault. [Bug 173652] Re: unable to adjust screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks
Before changing it like this, make sure nvclock does handle decrementing below zero and does not crash, if you request descreasing -S -10 when on 0, if that does ignore it. If it is, it is safe make it very simple. I recommend backup of original files. It should be safe making entire new files, maybe appending 2 to its name :) But havent tried it. # /etc/acpi/events/sony-brightness-up event=sony/hotkey (SPIC|SNC) 0001 0011 action=/usr/sbin/nvclock -S +10 # /etc/acpi/events/sony-brightness-down event=sony/hotkey (SPIC|SNC) 0001 0010 action=/usr/sbin/nvclock -S -10 then reload acpid configuration, and it should work: sudo invoke-rc.d acpid reload Check also /var/log/acpid, if it does not report some interesting errors after key pressed. Should work after that, but who knows. Try and see. If it does not handle border values, you try to find way to get value of current backlight from nvclock (maybe nvclock -S without number?). It should be needed to make script then. But it is obvious we should make some detection script, maybe run at startup. It should guess which type of backlight control would work for our model, and set some variable to some file. At keypress of backlight, we may be able to use right method using that variable. I dont think it is wise to autodetect it at each keypress again and again. This would be needed especially on laptops with two GPUs, speed and stamina, as they could be always different on each boot (or does it support hotswap at windows?). We should make some wiki pageand write table, for what laptops with what GPU what method of backlight control did work. Because i dont believe one script will simply work for all vaios this way. And i want always working method, if possible :) -- unable to adjust screen brightness on recent Sony Vaio notebooks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173652 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Ok, sorry, dont have that tool as i dont have nvidia, just guessed where it could be and missed. Problem is with Segmentation fault line between handler messages. That is result with which program ended, which means, program crashed (fault of program, never should do that). So, try running DISPLAY= sudo /usr/bin/nvclock -S -5, what will it report that. [Bug 193970] Re: iwl3945 | iwl4965: Wireless can't be activated after disabling kill switch
Yes, it seems newer driver does work different way. In 2.6.24-16-generic kernel i have iwl4965 driver 1.2.0, which work it seems same way as in gutsy. On wifi off, nm gets information and remove device. On activation it does not need acpi event to reactivate, and it goes up itself. Ifconfig still report it as UP, even when rf_kill switch is on (value 2 in /sys/class/net/wlan0/device/rf_kill). In 2.6.25 it does deactivate device on kill switch on, and even disable interrupt for wifi card. Card is down even after wifi is enabled by kill switch, you need to wake it up again. I have iwlwifi driver 1.2.23kds there, i think it is new behaviour of that driver. So yes, that might be propably because of newer kernel. -- iwl3945 | iwl4965: Wireless can't be activated after disabling kill switch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/193970 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 193970] Re: iwl3945 | iwl4965: Wireless can't be activated after disabling kill switch
I can confirm that it does not reenable device on vanilla 2.6.25 on hardy. All it needs is manual device activation of wlan0 device, just like Aram Yegenian wrote before me. Little problem is that my Sony Vaio reports wifi switch always same hotkey, when switched to off and also to on. But it does not break things for me to try it always, with rf_kill on it does refuse going up. Sending my script, a bit more complex then ifconfig (not sure it is better). [Bug 232464] [NEW] Make script for changing backlight using xbacklight
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: acpi-support I have Sony Vaio laptop version VGN-FZ210C. It comes with Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller, also called X3100 on selling materials. Ubuntu has several way to control brighness, but most are ACPI or some laptop-specific driver based. Several Vaios have ACPI driven support. But mine does not. I believe every computer with X3100 is able to control brighntess using intel driver for that card. Using extension i can control backlight using xbacklight utility coming from xbacklight package (not in default ubuntu install). I am able to map right fn key to right script, but there is none working. I believe it could be reused for other laptops with intel X3100 graphics as well, so it wont work only with sony. Problem with xbacklight is that it needs access to X DISPLAY, as it does it via X11 extension. If ubuntu could configure mapping some global keys to userspace and it had prepared mappings for right keys, it might be possible to map it like XF86Play keys are in metacity. So metacity does not have such mapping in their hotkeys setup also. So, if it is doable, make also xbacklight working from acpi events. It would be nice if sonybright.sh checked existence of files it is using. It does read or write file /sys/class/backlight/sony/brightness, but it does not check if it does even exist. It is making error messages to log only that way. As not all VAIOs have same method of configuring backlight, it might be wise check before reading it. ** Affects: acpi-support (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Make script for changing backlight using xbacklight https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/232464 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 232464] Re: Make script for changing backlight using xbacklight
i managed to make it work using some similar scripts in screenblank.sh. This way it does work as expected. I changed /etc/acpi/event/sony- brightness-down to call /etc/acpi/xbacklight-down.sh as action and similar with brightness-up. Also i changed event line, as my model reports actions using SNC and not SPIC. So i modified it to: /etc/acpi/event/sony-brightness-down: event=sony/hotkey (SPIC|SNC) 0001 0011 action=/etc/acpi/xbacklight-up.sh Problem is i believe in not generic scripts. Many models have same hotkeys IDs (provided using SNC maybe, but ids are the same), it might need autodetection in script or manual type specification somewhere for generic and always working scripts for VAIOs. [Bug 201777] [NEW] Not working routes with TAP device
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager-openvpn I am using gutsy, up to date with updates. I have been playing with openvpn, and i realized i would like more TAP interface instead of TUN. I want it because it work more like normal device and i can have ipv4 configuration with openvpn config and also ipv6 using external radvd listening on device tap_vpn on server. There is checkbox for TAP type device, that is good. Problem is, it is not supported enough to work with other options. It cannot pull routes, which is unfortunate, but can be changed manually in dialog. I wanted to route only my private ranges, so i can work at full speed of internet connection and still have connection to home. So i added 192.168.70.0/24 and some more routes to manually specify networks. This option does work pretty well for tun device. Problem is, tap device acts like ethernet device, not like point-to- point. So you need arp there to locate remote end. And there is problem, because all routes added to route table have not specified gateway ip. For tap device, you cannot simply route it to tap device, you have to specify also gateway ip. And using NM gui, i cannot set that. So i tried to remove specific routes and route all traffic to vpn. Interesting is, it does not work also, because same problem there. Default route has gateway ip 0.0.0.0 with route 0.0.0.0/0 on device tap0. That cannot work and really does not work. So, for tap device, it needs more changes than one checkox for overriding dev tun command. So in fact, TAP device can work only as connection to IP of vpn server, it cannot route to next hops. I think this is what most users want. It does work well in windows and linux using command line openvpn, because i can fix this on server push configuration. I need add gateway ip to push route commands. But using nm it does not allow any changes even it if does not work at all. Please dont fix it using switch to tun device. It might be possible, but still it is not the same. Someone may need tap for whatever reason, and it is offered, but not fully functional. ** Affects: network-manager-openvpn (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Not working routes with TAP device https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201777 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 96260] Re: n-m-openvpn: resolv.conf is erased if endpoint does not push DNS servers
Please tell me if this problem is considered buggy or not. From my point of view it is clearly bug. I have access to two VPNs. One PPTP to my school, where it does not supply DNS as it is not needed anyway. I have router all network there via vpn and DNS is not on LAN subnet, so it is securely routed via VPN too. Oh it should, because right after connecting to VPN, it clears my DNS and i have nothing. So i have secure ping to ip addresses, or working general internet connection. I am not administrator, i am not able to change its behaviour. I can change only my laptop. I have also my own openvpn VPN. It has password authentication and it works quite well. But of course, DNS does not work neither. I wanted to push only some routes, and this does not work. Well, it is simplified by GUI, i accept that. Instead of centrally managable routes i have to set them in every client. But Why some things does not work, when i HAVE to push DNS settings to keep it working? I have gutsy installed and feisty users reported already. So problem is not new, still no official fix is available. I think all that is about if dns_empty dont change /etc/resolf.conf.
