The same problem for me since mai 2009.

For me it seems to be related with wifi manipulations: disconnect from
AP, reconnect to AP, ...

If the problem occurs, all programs trying to read or write from PF_FILE socket 
hangs up.
gnome-terminal hangs up on reading /tmp/.ICE-unix/xxxxx
sudo (run in working gnome-terminal) and login (while trying to login on tty1) 
hags on writing to /dev/log (also PF_FILE socket)

i don't think this is related to gnome-session or xorg. i don't know the
launching mechanism, but once the problem triggered it is related to
read/write of file sockets.

other programs not using PF_FILE sockets just works.
nothing helps except reboot :(

Ubuntu 9.04 (fully updated version by version since 6.10 or 7.04)

any suggestions? very annoying problem forcing me to reboot 5 time a
day.
