[Bug 2064563] Re: Broken default installation of nix-bin and nix-setup-systemd

2024-09-25 Thread Prasanna Loganathar
Ah, thanks Peter. I missed the ssh part earlier. I think that simplifies
what needs to be done for the fix, as a silver lining.

Option 1 which simply removes the additional things Debian has added simply
letting nix take care of things should fix this, I believe.

This is really odd. There is no package called nix. Only nix-bin and
nix-setup-systemd. But launchpad will only let me tag nix. Wonder if
there is another launchpad bug or I'm missing something.

[Bug 2064563] [NEW] Broken default installation of nix-bin and nix-setup-systemd

2024-05-01 Thread Prasanna Loganathar
Public bug reported:

# Context

- nix-bin can be setup in 2 ways.
  - One is to let .nix-defer user local directory handle both channels and
packages. This will get placed into `/home//.local/state/nix/`
  - Second, is to let it all be symlinked into
`nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/`. (This is handled by systemd-tmpfiles
under `nix-setup-systemd` pkg. But very likely default installations do not
enable system-tmpfiles for user, it'll likely be enabled globally, but user
needs to enable manually)

## Current setup

- nix-setup-systemd ends up setting symlinks for per-user into the user
directory here:
  - /usr/share/user-tmpfiles.d/nix-daemon.conf
- nix-setup-systemd also ends up setting up the NIX_PATH to per-user dir above
making the assumption that it was completed in this file:
  - `/usr/lib/environment.d/nix-daemon.conf`

Firstly, this will fail in default installations since there is unless
the user enabled the systemd tmpfiles per user with

```
systemctl --user --now enable systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service
```

These symlinks will never be created and it's not in any of the docs.
But after enabling, this sets up for the profile, but not for channels.
It should also include symlinks for channels. This results in a broken
installation, as `nix-env` will work after adding user channel as
described in the docs. However all attempts to do `nix-shell -p `
will error due to:

does not exist, ignoring
error:

   …

 at «none»:0: (source not available)

   … while calling the 'import' builtin
```
This is because there is no such symlink and NIX_PATH is set to the non-
existent path.
## Current contents of
```
  4 #Type PathMode UID GID Age Argument

  3   d %h/.nix-defexpr

/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/%u/profile

  1   d /nix/var/nix/gcroots/per-user/%u 0755

```
## Solutions
### Solution 1
Simplest. Remove excess config.
- Remove the symlinks entirely. Move /usr/share/user-tmpfiles.d/nix-daemon.conf
to docs to remove depending on systemd-tmp files.
- Remove `NIX_PATH` in /usr/lib/environment.d/nix-daemon.conf. When NIX_PATH is
not set, nix handles the user profile automatically and works well. (unset
NIX_PATH in the shell can workaround this at the moment neatly)
### Solution 2
More nix data inside /nix store
- Add channels to the symlink in /usr/share/user-tmpfiles.d/nix-daemon.conf.
- Auto-enable `systemctl --user enable systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service`?
[Bug 1835645] Re: apt sources should be able to understand release variables
2019-07-07 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
@juliank - *my suggestion is use variables in apt, which provides an
option. It's not forcing a design decision of how it must be done.
Fedora/RHEL is a good example of where it works and dispels your empty
argument that it causes a terrible user experience.
However, based on your comment, the disagreement that you have _is your
opinion_, without having the choice, which is what makes for a terrible
user experience.
Also, I suggest considering or encouraging an open minded discussion,
rather than switching status to the thread to "Opinion" without any
community engagement whatsoever. I find this a bit disturbing to engage.
[Bug 1835645] [NEW] apt sources should be able to understand release variables
2019-07-07 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
Public bug reported:
apt sources conventionally use a fixed release name. But this causes
both adding repos as well as upgrading an unnecessarily painful
experience. For instance, adding a simple package requires adding the
keys with `apt-key` and then adding the repo, and then apt update/apt
install. 3 different steps also complicate install scripts. Distros like
fedora, RHEL handle this rather gracefully with `releasever` which makes
for a consistent experience.
Similarly, updating ubuntu on desktops every 6 months causes unnecessary
waste of time, having to upgrade the sources with say "bionic" to
"disco", and such in the apt sources. Currently, ubuntu attempts this on
a superficial level by just changing swapping out the release names for
what it can, and disabling the others. This is both fragile and causes
an inconsistent upgrade experience.
I think it's time that this is simplified, and potentially handled by
apt utilising release variables and names from `/etc/os-release`.
In case of upgrades, I personally think it's completely okay to use a
releasever variable based external repo that doesn't exist yet (and
might start working once upstream catches up), rather than just disable
it. However, using ubuntu release models, releasever ideally has the
option of utilising an option of LTS, so some external packages that
only does this conservatively on LTS can target a repo source url that
does just that (while this seems fragile technically, practically it
works as most LTS repos work rather well)
In case of Debian, the above problem is actually not as magnified due to
slower release and consistent names like `stable`, `oldstable` and
`testing`, which makes upgrading not as big a task, however affects
ubuntu release models far more significantly.
I'm marking this as a bug, since I think this is a significant UX dent
for today's distros - so much that other most significant other distros
don't have such a painful experience.
[Bug 137981] Re: Cheese : If two v4l devices exist there is no way to choose the correct one
2019-06-25 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
Ended up hitting this on my Thinkpad X1. Integrated Camera is always
been chosen, and Cheese always seems to reset the settings on each
startup even if I change it manually using gsettings.
This is a pretty basic UX high priority bug that's somehow not been
payed attention for over a decade since 2007?
[Bug 1812387] Re: tmux crashes on tpm init
2019-02-12 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
Reproduction steps again, for reference:
1. docker run -it --rm prasannavl/tmux-launchpad-bug-1812387
2. tmux
3. Alt + e + I
4. exit (Don't wait for tpm to finish)
5. tmux
6. Alt + e + I (again)
Wait for the tpm completion message, and visible tmux crash with [lost
server] message on console.
[Bug 1812387] Re: tmux crashes on tpm init
2019-02-12 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
I've updated the docker image prasannavl/tmux-launchpad-bug-1812387 to
only use ubuntu-repo based tmux-plugin-manager.
It still crashes with "[lost-server]". Same steps as above should work.
**Dockerfile:**
```
FROM ubuntu:18.10

RUN apt update && apt dist-upgrade -y && \
apt install tmux tmux-plugin-manager git tree -y && \
ulimit -c unlimited

COPY tmux.conf "/root/.tmux.conf"
CMD bash
```
**tmux.conf:**
```
# set prefix: Alt + e
set -g prefix M-e
# Let's bind this too, so that repeated
# presses work, esp. when nesting.
bind -n M-e send-prefix

# start window numbering at 1
set -g base-index 1
# start pane numbering at 1
set -g pane-base-index 1

# use mouse
set -g mouse on
setw -g mode-keys vi

# Use Alt-arrow keys WITHOUT PREFIX KEY to switch panes
bind -n M-Left select-pane -L
bind -n M-Right select-pane -R
bind -n M-Up select-pane -U
bind -n M-Down select-pane -D

set -g @scroll-down-exit-copy-mode off
set -g @scroll-without-changing-pane on
set -g @emulate-scroll-for-no-mouse-alternate-buffer on

# plugins
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tpm'
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tmux-sensible'
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tmux-resurrect'
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tmux-continuum'
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tmux-copycat'
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tmux-pain-control'
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tmux-prefix-highlight'
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tmux-open'
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tmux-yank'
set -g @plugin 'nhdaly/tmux-better-mouse-mode'
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tmux-logging'

run -b "/usr/share/tmux-plugin-manager/tpm"

```
[Bug 1813403] Re: Better kernel core dump defaults
2019-02-01 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
** Description changed:
  Currently,
  `$ sysctl kernel.core_pattern`
  gives
  `kernel.core_pattern = |/usr/share/apport/apport %p %s %c %d %P`
- This should be considered a bug, since a minimal version of ubuntu
- (server, core etc) and more notoriously when run from containers, this
- will just error out, with no core dump being produced, due to the
- absence of apport. Adding to the problem, is with container where you
- can't just change it per container, and should be changed from the host.
- I think using apport (a non essential package) as a default without
- thought as to it's absence is not robust design.
+ This is usually fine, however, when run from containers or lxc this will
+ just error out, with no core dump being produced, due to it being
+ disabled. Adding to the problem: with container or lxc, you can't just
+ change it per container, and should be changed on the host. And it's not
+ reasonable to expect apport in all containers either. Since, this is a
+ common problem, I think it's important to consider a change in the
+ default handling.
  There are multiple options to deal with this:
- 1. Drop apport as default and switch to a simple file in either
- /var/crash (this requires creating /var/crash as a part of the
- installation as it's currently created by apport), or /tmp
+ 1. Drop apport as default core_pattern handler and switch to a simple
+ file in either /var/crash (this requires creating /var/crash as a part
+ of the installation as it's currently created by apport), or /tmp and
+ let apport handle the core dump after the fact, and report it.
  2. Switch to systemd-coredump, and default to it, since it already does
  this very well and provides "coredumpctl" which is much nicer to work
  with. systemd-coredump also is a part of the systemd suite of utils and
  doesn't pull in a larger dependency as apport -- which to date, isn't as
  robust (I still have "core" files being left all over the place due to
  the fact that apport reset's itself and crashes during startup aren't
  handled properly). This also has a nice advantage of unifying the OSS
  community in terms of coredump handler. apport can handle things from
  the core dumps that systemd generates, further on desktops.
  3. Employ a tiny helper script, as the default core dump handler, which
  looks for specified programs such as "apport", "abrt", systemd-coredump"
  and pipes to them, or pipes it to /var/crash, or /tmp during it's
  absence. This does have the disadvantage of growing with it's own
  config, rather quickly.
  That being said, I highly suggest option 2 be used in the upcoming
  versions, and apport be a layer sitting on top of the coredumps
  generated by systemd-coredumps by either hooking into it, or by watching
- it's folders. I've started to remove apport and switch to systemd-
- coredump in all my server images as well, as apport seems to mostly be
- more of a nuisance. However, this also makes it difficult to report to
- launchpad, as apport currently cannot readily take an existing core dump
- file and do the reporting (though I suppose this should be possible
- providing the right arguments?).
+ it's folders.
Hi Ian,
Thank you for the reply. I appreciate it :) .. However I think you may
have replied to an older version of the bug description. I did miss the
"--du" option initially, but then had updated the description
accordingly.
[Bug 1813601] Re: tree and better recursive directory sizing
2019-01-30 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
** Description changed:
  Currently `tree -dh`/`tree -h` simply shows the size of the directory
  nodes that tend to be 4K in a default ext4 installation with 4K block
  sizes. While this is not very useful in terms of UX, it does however
  have it's use by not spending a whole lot of IO on calculating recursive
  sizes. However, in addition to the current mode, it would be great to
  have an option, that recursively adds up the size of the its contents
  and displays the total size of the directory (inclusive of all hidden
  and dot files), instead of just the directory node size.
  UPDATE: There's the "--du" option, that the upstream author was gracious
  enough to point out to me. This is great and solves the problem in
  theory.
  But in practice, when used with large trees (for example the $HOME
  folder), the usefulness vanishes rather quickly due to the following
  reasons:
  1. Output is usually very large. So, it isn't very practical to use this
  option in non-automated scenario. So we probably want to limit depth
  with "-L" in most occasions.
  2. However, while using "-L", "--du" behaves in a way where it only
- calculates partial sizes for the leaf trees, that are larger than the
- given depth. So, this limits it's practical usefulness as well.
+ calculates partial sizes for the leaf trees that are larger than the
+ given depth. While this is probably the best default to have, with the
+ exception of some specific scenarios where this is what is required,
+ this limits it's practical usefulness as well with most large trees.
- 3. While the above is technically a right decision for the same reasons
- as tree defaulting to just show size of the directory as block sizes,
- this is misleading since there's no way to differentiate what's a
- partial size, and what's the correct real calculation in the above
- scenario.
+ 3. In the above scenario, the problem is compounded by the fact that one
+ can easily be mislead, since there's currently no way to differentiate
+ what's a partial size, and what's the correct real calculation of the
+ full size.
  POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS:
- 1 & 2. It would nice to have an additional option that calculates the forces
the tree traversal for the calculating sizes alone, so that real sizes are
displayed when used along with the "-L" option. This can also be in the form of
another depth, that default to say "-1", meaning a full traversal, or positive
numbers for limiting the size traversals.
-
- 3. This can easily be solved by suffixing the size with something, for the
sake of a better suffix "*".
  Currently `tree -dh`/`tree -h` simply shows the size of the directory
[Bug 1813403] Re: Better kernel core dump defaults
2019-01-26 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
** Package changed: procps (Ubuntu) => ubuntu
** Description changed:
  Currently,
  `$ sysctl kernel.core_pattern`
  gives
  `kernel.core_pattern = |/usr/share/apport/apport %p %s %c %d %P`
  This should be considered a bug, since a minimal version of ubuntu
  (server, core etc) and more notoriously when run from containers, this
  will just error out, with no core dump being produced, due to the
  absence of apport. Adding to the problem, is with container where you
  can't just change it per container, and should be changed from the host.
  I think using apport (a non essential package) as a default without
  thought as to it's absence is not robust design.
  There are multiple options to deal with this:
  1. Drop apport as default and switch to a simple file in either /var/crash
(this requires creating /var/crash as a part of the installation as it's
currently created by apport), or /tmp
- 2. Switch to systemd-coredump, and default to it, since it already does this
very well and provides "coredumpctl" which is much nicer to work with.
systemd-coredump also is a part of the systemd suite of utils and doesn't pull
in a larger dependency as apport -- which to date, isn't as robust (I still
have "core" files being left all over the place by apport, mostly in my home
folder). This also has a nice advantage of unifying the OSS community in terms
of coredump handler.
- 3. Employ a tiny helper script, as the default core dump handler, which looks
for specified programs such as "apport", "abrt", systemd-coredump" and pipes to
them, or pipes it to /var/crash, or /tmp during it's absence.
+ 2. Switch to systemd-coredump, and default to it, since it already does this
generates, further on desktops.
the disadvantage of growing with it's own config, rather quickly.
- And add a sysctl.d default rule here, or more cleanly a separate package
- that does exactly this on option 3.
[Bug 1812387] Re: tmux crashes on tpm init
2019-01-25 Thread Prasanna V. Loganathar
Hi Christian,
Alright, did a little more digging. It looks like incomplete
installation of tpm/tpm plugins, or some race condition with multiple
tpm execution that's causing the crash. I put it as docker image for
convenience.
How to reproduce the bug:
1. docker run -it --rm prasannavl/tmux-launchpad-bug-1812387
2. tmux
3. Alt + e + I
4. exit (Don't wait for tpm to finish)
5. tmux
6. Alt + e + I (again)
Wait for the tpm completion message, and visible tmux crash with [lost
server] message on console.
the above to make the system generate the core dumps.
Hi Sebastien, I'm afraid I'm not entirely sure. I had this crash dump
again and again in a clean installed laptop that's up to date for the
last couple of weeks. So, thought I'll file it. Please do feel free to
close it if you think it may be redundant.
Hi, Attached the recent samba folder zipped. 'cores' folder was already
there. So, I didn't create it.
I ran the command:
 ls -la /var/log/samba/cores
Here's what I get:
ats@ats-pc:~$ ls -la /var/log/samba/cores
total 16
Meanwhile I tried to run this command "sudo apt install ruby-bundler" and I
[Bug 1679226] [NEW] gedit consumes 100% of cpu when left minimised
2017-04-03 Thread Kevin Selva Prasanna
Public bug reported:
When left minimised, gedit on ubuntu takes up 30 to 50% of CPU. When I
maximise it to use it again, the CPU usage drops to zero. I tried
purging and reinstalling gedit many times. But it doesn't help. The
issue starts a few seconds after opening gedit. But the issue is so
serious, that I cannot use it more than a few seconds without heating up
my computer.
System does not boot as mount times out and drops to a emergency shell.
Did not try mounting manually. Will get back with result soon.
Booted into Windows 8 once and came back. Now audio and wifi starts
[Bug 1633825] [NEW] System goes to emergency mode as /boot/efi could not be mounted
2016-10-16 Thread Prasanna Kumar
Public bug reported:
System was booting normally with 16.04. Upgraded to 16.10, system goes
to emergency console on every boot. This happened due to timeout in
mounting /boot/efi. Commented out /boot/efi entry in /etc/fstab. System
boots after that. But wifi, bluetooth and sound does not start
automatically now. I have to load iwlwifi module to start wifi,
snd_hda_intel to get sound working. I am using a Lenovo G50-80 laptop.
Everything was working fine in 16.04.
[Bug 1419439] Re: Screen freeze when watching video in VLC
2015-02-11 Thread Prasanna Kumar
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64431#c24 has the same stack
trace. Will try to check this weekend if the bug is fixed in drm-intel-
nightly branch.
If a .deb is available for that kernel I can use it directly which may
speed up my testing.
  Screen freezes when I watch video in VLC media player. Moving mouse is
  of no use and Ctrl + Alt + T short cut does not launch terminal. But I
  Could hear the audio even after screen freeze.
  If I press Ctrl + Alt + F1 and wait for several minutes switches to
[Bug 1419439] Re: Screen freeze when watching video in VLC
2015-02-08 Thread Prasanna Kumar
This is not a bug in VLC, it just triggers the code path within ther
kernel which causes the issue. Looking at the kernel OOPS it can be
confirmed that the problem is within the kernel (intel graphics driver
code). Please change the package back to Linux from VLC.
2015-02-08 Thread Prasanna Kumar
Public bug reported:
Screen freezes when I watch video in VLC media player. Moving mouse is
of no use and Ctrl + Alt + T short cut does not launch terminal. But I
Could hear the audio even after screen freeze.
If I press Ctrl + Alt + F1 and wait for several minutes switches to
[Bug 1272338] Re: Xorg memory leak on trusty
2014-12-04 Thread Prasanna Kannappan
I am also having problems with XOrg. Memory consumption goes over 2 Gb
in a day of system uptime. Firefox is the primary application that is
running most of the time.
I am running ubuntu 12.04 . This problem started occuring before a month
or two. I suspect one of the updates broke something. I am using an
ATI/AMD Graphics card.
[Bug 847001] Re: Adjusting display brightness is very slow on several Dell laptops
2014-05-10 Thread Prasanna Kumar
Updated from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04. Keyboard input is sluggish. When
typing one letter appears after I type the next one.
While changing brightness using fn + brightness key notification appears
but the brightness change after a long time or does not change at all. I
am using a Lenovo ThinkPad L430.
Note: I did not have any such problem with Ubuntu 13.10 or previous
version in the same laptop.
[Bug 1264344] [NEW] Filename conflict when copying files - unexpected behaviour when trying to rename the target file
2013-12-26 Thread Prasanna Kannappan
Public bug reported:
I use nautilus filemanger in my ubuntu box. When I copy and paste files
between folders, sometimes a dialog box pops up saying that the target
folder already contains a file with the same name asking me to choose
among a set of options on how to proceed. One of the options available
is to rename the target filename so that the file can be pasted to the
target folder. When I rename the file through this dialog, it does not
paste the file with the new name as expected. Instead it shows the name
conflict dialog again for the same file with the old name. When I try to
rename the file again with a different name, it accepts the command and
pastes the file.
[Bug 1195725] Re: Nautilus window jumping with dual monitors
2013-10-02 Thread Prasanna Kannappan
I flipped the configuration of my monitors so that the leftmost part of
my display configuration is my external monitor and to the right is the
laptop screen. Now I see that the windows opened in my laptop screen
moving to my external monitor after the first double click on maximized
nautilus or typing into the address bar of the maximized chrome-browser.
This brings me to the conclusion that the window is forced to the
leftmost monitor.
Let me know if you need any more information.
[Bug 1195725] Re: Nautilus window jumping with dual monitors
2013-08-18 Thread Prasanna Kannappan
I want to add that I am experiencing the same behavior with chromium-
browser too. When I open a browser window on my external monitor and
start typing into the address bar, it moves the window to my other
monitor (laptop monitor) in a dual monitor configuration.
It doesn't look like a nautilus bug. It looks more like a windows
manager bug.
[Bug 1108731] Re: libwebp.pc is not included in libwebp-dev package
I created a libwebp.pc file (modified libwebp.pc.in by hand) as I needed
that. I have attached the same with this bug. It seems to be fine based
on my usage but generating while compiling webp will be the best method.
[Bug 1108731] [NEW] libwebp.pc is not included in libwebp-dev package
2013-01-29 Thread Prasanna Kumar
Public bug reported:
In Ubuntu 12.10 libwebp-dev package libwebp.pc file is not included.
This file is used to determine the include files and libraries required
to use by applications that plan to use libwebp. As it is not included
it is not possible for other applications to determine the presence of
libwebp in the system and makes it unusable. Each dev package must have
a .pc file so that application that rely on them will detect them
automatically while configuring - this defeats the very purpose of
having the libwebp-dev package.
The same is true for Ubuntu 11.10's libwebp-dev package. I have not
checked the Ubuntu 12.04's libwebp-dev package.
[Bug 868904] Re: Redshift fails to start with session due to geoclue failure
2012-09-29 Thread Prasanna K
Above mentioned work around works without active internet connection.
i.e, redshift doesn't go looking for geolocations if you use this
workaround.
But if we tuse terminal and use command : $ redshift
(it shows)
** (process:3248): WARNING **: Metadata for error domain "geoclue-error-
quark" already registered
Started Geoclue provider `Geoclue Master'.
Using provider `geoclue'.
Could not get location (3 retries left): Geoclue master client has no usable
Position providers.
Unable to get location from provider.
But when you type command $ gtk-redshift -l LAT:LONG (Where LAT and LONG
correspond with your coordinates.)
it runs soomthly as send in the above question. Hence forth a startup
application is created using this command.
By the way when you click Applications>Accessories>Redshift it works
through geolocation and needs a active internet connection every time
where as the little workout in http://askubuntu.com/questions/194525
/does-redshift-need-active-internet-connection-to-work/194582#194582
helps the otherway by mannually creating the geolocation.
