[Bug 99348] Re: [apport] totem-video-thumbnailer crashed with SIGSEGV in decode_mb_cavlc()

2010-09-16 Thread Prosthetic Head
Several bugs I'm on the list for have been retrospectively marked as
'Critical' after being closed as fixed. There may be a good reason for
this in each case, but given that several of them had no priority set or
were a lower priority and had been left unsolved for quite some time it
does look suspiciously like skewing of statistics. ('we've fixed X
critical bugs' or 'we fixed 97% of all critical bugs', etc., except that
they weren't critical until after they were fixed)

As I said, there may be a very good reason which I've missed or it could
be coincidence. I also apologise for posting this here as it may not be
the most appropriate place to raise such concerns, but I have no idea of
anywhere else more appropriate.

[Bug 587426] Re: No GPU found

2010-08-19 Thread Prosthetic Head
I've found a way to get this to work, at least on my machine. I simply
downloaded and manually installed the latest BOINC software direct from
Berkeley. The versions in the ubuntu repository and the PPA i tried do
not work, but the berkely version does. This is with the default ATI
drivers installed through the restricted driver manager in lucid.

So, in my case, the problem is with the ubuntu packaged and PPA packaged
BOINC software and NOT ATI drivers or anything else.

I hope that helps!

** Description changed:

I have a Logitech pro for notebook webcam. This worked perfectly with cheese,
skype and vlc in 9.10 but under 10.04 32bit (up to date as of 17:30 GMT 7th
March 2010) it does not appear to be detected by any of these programs
(possibly V4L/V4L2 system not picking it up). So this is a regression in
support for this device.
The camera is listed under lsusb fine:

cris...@loki:~$ lsusb

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

but it is not detected by cheese, vlc, skype or anything else.

I am happy to try and provide more information if someone can tell me what
information would be helpful and how to get it.
It would be nice to have this popular and generally very good camera working
again in the LTS april release.

  Thanks

[Bug 533907] Re: 10.04 Logitech notebook pro webcam - Regression

2010-08-12 Thread Prosthetic Head
This is still a bug and is a regression on previous hardware support. It
has a usable workaround:

"Unloading (rmmod uvcvideo) and reloading (modprobe uvcvideo) the
uvcvideo"

Surely the reason for having a bug report system and gathering info on
workarounds is so that the system can be made to support the hardware
'out the box' by default, either through pushing out an updated package
or in the next version?

It seems odd to close a real, known and reproducible regression bug with
a known workaround without actually having the problem fixed in the
default system. Most people will not want to have to search for this
report and then manually unload and reload a kernel module every time
the want to use their webcam.

I have tried both the "sleep 10" hack and the PPA version. My 4550 is
still undetected by BOINC. "No usable GPU found". The 4550 supports
stream and is listed in various places as supported for single precision
BOINC processing so should work. Could it be something to do with the
driver installed through Ubuntus restricted driver manager?

[Bug 571162] [NEW] Interface does not respont to mouse clicks (Lucid)

2010-04-28 Thread Prosthetic Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wesnoth-1.8

On starting up wesnoth-1.8 the front page appears and music plays. When
the mouse is hovered over any of the buttons on that screen they become
highlighted but unfortunately don't respond to clicks. This makes it
impossible to start a game or change preferences or use any of the other
features of the interface making the program essentially useless.

The default Wesnoth (1.65) in lucid works fine on the same system.
This may be why 1.8 branch has to be specifically installed and is not the
default Wesnoth branch?

Either way, 1.8 will be required to continue playing multi-player with
others who have upgraded so it would be nice to get it working.

This problem can be duplicated on all 3 of my systems:
Pentium 4 based desktop with Radeon 9600 graphics card using open driver (Lucid
32bit)
Thinkpad T61p - Core2, nVidia card with proprietary driver (Lucid 64bit)
Thinkpad X60s - Core2, Intel GMA950 graphics (Lucid 64bit)

** Affects: wesnoth-1.8 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I'd be happy to provide a backtrace if you can tell me how or link to a
how-to. I'm away from the internet for a week from tomorrow (Thursday
25th) evening so if its after then someone else will have to get the
backtrace for you.

Just wanted to add that this is not a one off occurrence as suggested above, it
is happening several times a day.
If there is any more specific information needed please ask (I'm an experienced
user but not a technical expert, so some instruction for anything highly
technical would be appreciated).

Fully up to date (~1 hour ago) 64bit Lucid (10.04) beta and this is
still happening despite all the talk of 'Fix Released' above. Do you
need any more data I could provide?

[Bug 533907] [NEW] 10.04 Logitech notebook pro webcam - Regression

2010-03-07 Thread Prosthetic Head
Public bug reported:

I have a Logitech pro for notebook webcam. This worked perfectly with cheese,
skype and vlc in 9.10 but under 10.04 32bit (up to date as of 17:30 GMT 7th
March 2010) it does not appear to be detected by any of these programs
(possibly V4L/V4L2 system not picking it up). So this is a regression in
support for this device.
The camera is listed under lsusb fine:

  cris...@loki:~$ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 046d:08c3 Logitech, Inc. Camera (Notebooks Pro)

Thanks

I also get extremely slow CD/DVD read and write on three different systems

slower than under 9.04 or Windows XP)

2) Pentium 4 Shuttle system
3) Dell SFF system

This does still happen on 9.10 on my thinkpad x32, but only intermittently.
Suspend / Resume generally works well, but maybe one time in 10 this error will
occur.
I'll run the command you posted when i get home.

[Bug 380293] Re: Ienovo X200 power consumption - power top

2009-06-15 Thread Prosthetic Head
I can confirm this also on an "X200-S" (the updated model). Battery life
MUCH shorter than it should be under Ubuntu. (4 cell --> ubuntu ~1.5hrs,
Vista gives just under 3 with similar usage) This is a big issue as the
laptop was purchased spescifically for its long battery life when on 9
cell battery and this doesn't reallyhappen under ubuntu.

[Bug 349042] [NEW] Package conflict between Audacity and Ubuntu Restriced Extras in Jaunty 9.04

2009-03-26 Thread Prosthetic Head
Public bug reported:

It appears that ubuntu-restricted-extras pulls in libavcodec-unstripped-52
which conflicts with libavcodec52 which is listed as a dependency of audacity.
Presumably audacity should work just fine with the unstripped codecs package?
- this may also affect other packages with libavcodec52 as a dependency?

I'm using ubuntu 9.04 current as of posting this.

[code]cris...@charon:~$ sudo aptitude install audacity

Re: [Bug 244383] Re: Rhythmbox frequently fails to compleatly download podcasts

2009-02-27 Thread Prosthetic Head
Can you please run rhythm box this way:

rhythmbox --debug &> rhythmbox-debug.txt

That will record everything rhythmbox is doing in the txt file. If you get a
file in this way which shows the download failure then please upload it as
it will ve valuable in finding the cause of the problem.

Unfortunately some seemed very keen on closing the bug and blaming the
network, but all network applications must be fault tolerant so i don't
follow their logic.

Thanks

[Bug 299107] Re: too wide image crashes FF

2008-11-17 Thread Prosthetic Head
Adding terminal error message:
" [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ firefox www.dobroc.com/kuba/test.gif
The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
   (Details: serial 3287 error_code 11 request_code 53 minor_code 0)
   (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)"

Also, if i open the file from my downloads folder instead of the URL then
instead of closing, the window stays open, cpu use goes to 100% and I get
traces on the window by anything i drag over the top of it.
Hope some of that helps.

PS: I testid this from inside a VM (VirtualBox OSE) just in-case,
hopefully that shouldn't change the outcome.

I've tried it with other gif images, including other very wide ons 41000
pix and have not had the problem. Only your rather strange gif causes
it. I downloaded it and opened with eog, it looks like it mast be
specifically crafted to crash Firefox as it certainly isn't a useful

I can confirm this in intrepid (up to date as of about an hour ago) on a

I have had it since i started using ubuntu 3 or 4 versions back.

I'll try the "(xor-color (color-rgb 1.0 1.0 1.0))" trick and see if it
works with this version of GIMP.

Thanks, hope this will eventually get fixed!

Re: [Bug 244383] Re: Rhythmbox frequently fails to compleatly download podcasts

2008-10-16 Thread Prosthetic Head
Yes, the problem is caused by a weak wireless connection, however, rhythmbox
should be tolerant of unreliable networks (if a packet is missing or damaged
it should re-request it) or at a bare minimum flag the download as failed
and allow you to restart it. It should not mark it as downloaded, only have
part of the audio and then refuse to let you redownload it, forcing a manual
download.

For eg, Firefox never part-downloaded a file but marked it as complete when
i was on the poor network, nor wget, aptitude, etc, etc. Rhythmbox is the
only program to show this behaviour, the other all either produce a perfect
download or recognise that it has failed.

So to summarise, the rhythmbox bug is marking failed downloads as
successful.

It may be an issue for upstream not ubuntu (although its a core ubuntu
application), and i'll report upstream if it happens again, but it is a
fault with the way rhythmbox responds to damaged/missing network packets.

PS:
"As said i'm not seeing this behavior, that works fine for me"
I was inquiring to kemel as to weather this was when he/she saw the issue, i
read above that you have been unable to reproduce the issue.

Hi, Just thought i'd add that I have moved house since and have been unable

Thanks very much :)

would be nice if it was properly fixed / automatic as there are still many
thousands of laptops with this chipset in use, and Xubuntu is an ideal
distro for them.

[Bug 244383] Re: Rhythmbox frequently fails to compleatly download podcasts

2008-08-15 Thread Prosthetic Head
Hi,
Thanks for trying it. Unfortunatly I am still having this problem. It only
happens when I'm on my weak wireless connection, not when wired or strong
signal, so it may be worth trying with some atrificially introduced network
problems to replicate this?
If I send a log of next time it happens will that be any use?
Is there any other infomation I can provide or things I can try that will help?
thanks

[Bug 244383] Re: Rhythmbox frequently fails to compleatly download podcasts

2008-07-17 Thread Prosthetic Head
Hi,
Sorry about the slow response, I've been away on business.

Here are a list of some of the URLs of the podcast feeds I'm using:
http://podcast.seti.org/index.xml
http://www.lugradio.org/episodes.ogg.rss
http://pointofinquiry.libsyn.com/rss
http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/series/science/podcast.xml

I think I've had the problem with partial downloads on all or most of these
feeds when on my week wireless network.
To say again, I've never had this problem when downloading over a wired network
or a strong wireless signal, only when the wlan signal is week (possibly its
due to corrupted packets / lost connection?)

The log file I've attached is just of me opening and closing the app so
is prob not much use. I'll try to get a log of it failing to get a
podcast file properly asap.

Thanks

[Bug 244383] [NEW] Rhythmbox frequently fails to compleatly download podcasts

2008-06-30 Thread Prosthetic Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Rhythmbox 0.11.5 fails to download podcasts fully, they stop part way through.
This is not an issue when the files are downloaded with firefox or wget. There
is obviously some error checking or broken download detection and resume built
in to firefox / wget, but not rhythmbox. This is extremely frustrating as it
leaves me having to manually download podcasts or miss the end of the episodes.

Rhythmbox should download the files as reliably as firefox and should flag any
incomplete downloads. It should also have a feature to re-download a file, as
this can't currently be done.

This appears to be due to damaged packets, as it is much more frequent
when i am using my wireless network (which occasionally looses
connection) than when I am on the wired network.

NOTE: This is not a duplicate of the fixed bug as that one relates to
specific URLs completely failing to download, where as I am making
people aware about the frequent failure to completely download all or a
file.

It may be worth filing a bug against the gtk lib and linking the 2?

No action i'm aware of yet. Times like this i wish i had more technical
knowledge. I guess this one isn't a priority for the serious devs. That said
it is a base package in Xubuntu so it is a definite priority to many users.
Any one know how best to get the attention of the clever people? If a day of
my time would do it i'd have fixed it by now, but alass, i currently lack
the skills to even know where to look :(

Yeah, the bug did not exist in 7.10, its new to hardy and seems to afflict
all (or atleast lots of) Neomagic 256 series graphics chips. I think we need
to get the attention of a driver / graphics guru if we are going to get this
fixed.
I'd also be interested to hear if this also affects other distros as a
result of an upstream issue, of if its a xubuntu spescific package issue.

an easier way would be to install an alternative terminal (aterm, xterm,
gnome-terminal, etc) or use the ctrl+alt+f2 if you only want it
occasionally. Its very hard to go back to a previous distro.

For a work around, you can use another terminal emulator (aterm, xterm,
gnome-terminal, etc, etc) or ctrl+alt+f2
Its not ideal and I hope somone who knows about these things has some time
to take a look at it soon.

Just had a quick look and your sony f590k is listed as using the "NeoMagic
MagicMedia™ 256XL+" graphics chip.
My IBM 600E uses the "NeoMagic MagicMedia™ 256AV"
So maybe it is an issue with the driver for this series of NeoMagic chips, and
/ or how whatever toolkit draws the widgits for the xfce4-terminal talks to it?
I'm not an expert on this type of issue, so i could very well be wrong, just a
thought :)

[Bug 194769] [NEW] xfce4-terminal window borders / decorations / widgets being incorrectly drawn (xubuntu 8.04)

2008-03-07 Thread Prosthetic Head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-terminal

I'm using xubuntu 8.04 (up to date as of 22/02/08) on a thinkpad 600e. I
upgraded from xubuntu 7.10 a few days ago. When I open an xfce4-terminal window
the borders, title bar and widgets are either black or corrupted multicolours
(see attachments), this also effects the xfce4-terminal preferences window. No
other applications have this problem, and changing the theme does not effect
the problem. If i move another window in front of the terminal window sometimes
small pieces of colour from the broken title bar seem to leak through and
appear on the other window.
This is both cosmetic and functional as it hides the minimise, close, etc
widgets and the title. Since this is a commonly used core package in xubuntu i
think it is important. Anyone had the same problem on other hardware?
On my thinkpad the 7.10 version worked flawlessly and gnome -terminal works as
expected, its just this package so i doubt its specific to my machine.
Thanks
