[Bug 1047384] Re: System Encryption Password set before setting keyboard locale

2014-10-26 Thread Rafael Gattringer
I can confirm this workaround:
1. after the first boot choose "Try Ubuntu without installing".
2. look for the keyboard settings in the application menu and choose your
keymap.
3. start installing Ubuntu from via the desktop icon.

[Bug 521025] Re: After choosing location, keyboard should be guessed

2014-10-25 Thread Rafael Gattringer
Please be aware, that the setting of the keyboard should be done as soon
as possible. E.g. with the keyboard you could enter a city in the time
zone picker. See related bugs, where an early keyboard selection is very
important:

Especially a problem when setting up systems for clients, who you only
visit once or twice a year. The kernel updates fill the boot partition
fast and so users are warned at the start that no space is left.

[Bug 556372] Re: Please remove the plymouth dependency from mountall / cryptsetup

2010-07-20 Thread Rafael Gattringer
As a tester I kindly ask for an easy way to activate textual boot
option. Why?

* The graphical boot might hang when changing the graphic driver - e.g.
personal experience when trying to activate a NVIDIA driver.

* Textual booting facilitates error seeking - e.g. where does the boot
process hang?

* A fast boot is the goal of all of us. On a global scale it even saves co2! ;-)
People out there don't always have the newest hardware, which might minimize
the text/graphic boot time difference.

This discussion remembers me of the Ubuntu 10.04 window position problem
(close/minimze/maximize position).

So please (whoever is in charge), choose a standard option (= Ubuntu
Politics), but enable everyone to change to the other options in a
simple way. Thank you.

[Bug 532633] Re: [light-theme] please revert the order of the window controls back to "menu:minimize, maximize, close"

2010-03-19 Thread Rafael Gattringer
Luckily I know understand that I can configure the buttons with
gconftool. My anger is finally gone. After many times scanning the
gconftool shell command I actually didn't understand the meaning of ":".
The good outcome of this bug is that I have my minimize and close button
back on the right. Furthermore, I "killed" my maximize button. I don't
need it as I double click on the title bar.

As long as I have the power and especially knowledge (!) on how to configure my
interface I don't care what the default solution is.
After every ubuntu installation I rearrange many interface settings anyway,
like reducing the workspace to a single one or moving the taskbar to the top.

For the distro upgrades I would recommend keeping the buttons at the same
location. Sensible users who don't understand how to rearrange the buttons
would surely get confused.

Regarding the decision making process I think it is good that Mark backs the
decision of the design group. That gives the groups security that their
decisions are respected. However more transparency might be helpful and for the
community to help adding research (like usability studies) and discussion. The
teams then can still decide on their own.
Or perhaps we just don't know enough about how these special groups operate
and it is a lack of communication / informaton.

At last an off topic wish. As a micro Karma contributer it is still very
unclear to me where to post what in the Ubuntu landscape. We have brainstorm,
launchpad, mailinglists with similar topics, all where wishes can be placed.
With a wish of mine I went through launchpad, gnome bugzilla, a gnome
mailinglist, an ubuntu mailing list and finally got no reaction, not even where
it would be best to place my wish.
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-desktop/2010-January/002406.html

So please give us better instructions where to contribute - perhaps with
a very easy to find single (!) page as a signpost (e.g. "ubuntu
lighthouse") with explanations and short use cases. Goto x when y ...

Thank you. Rafael

[Bug 327088] Re: java plugin not registered in firefox on amd64

2010-01-29 Thread Rafael Gattringer
Same here, webpages which require Java mention that the plugin is not
installed.

My user agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2)
Gecko/20100125 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6

Package sun-java6-plugin (Version 6-16-1) is installed but about:plugins
in Firefox does not show the plugin. Also
http://www.java.com/de/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1 does no
detect the plugin.

[Bug 513299] [NEW] allow removal of single gnome-utils app

2010-01-27 Thread Rafael Gattringer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

Dear developers,

recently I wanted to remove a single app of the gnome-utils package
but couldn't. Since the apps are bundled, I would have to remove all
the other apps at the same time.

The dummy user like me has no idea of the underlying application
packages. In the worst case a user would remove one application (as
gnome-utils) and unintentionally remove all components.

So the idea would be to split gnome-utils into single applications.
gnome-utils could be retained as a "meta-package"(?) like
non-free-codecs of medibuntu.org.

Bye, Rafael

[Bug 468850] Re: [Vostro 1000] Resume fails after suspend/hibernate

2009-12-15 Thread Rafael Gattringer
Although this is getting really off topic here, this bug is an example
that Ubuntu has to be more conservative in critical areas like graphic
and network drivers, booting, suspend/resume and other basic features.
An idea might be a "stable" basic layer and on top an optional
innovation layer? A state of art but "broken" innovation will not pay
off. After all stability is THE core strength of linux, not necessarily
innovation. I will not change my distro, but rather downgrade or stay at
9.04.

[Bug 106199] Re: [feisty] 50% of cpu when a page is waiting to load

2007-10-22 Thread Rafael Gattringer
This is a bug for me as well (Gutsy Final).

CPU: Mobile AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ / 2,13 GHz
RAM: 512 MB (including 128 shared memory for the graphic processor)
Graphic Processor: ATI Radeon IGP 320M / Mobility U1
X11 Driver: ati
Resolution: 1280x800
Desktop Effects: "Extra"

The (mkfifo/cat) testcase increases the CPU usage by 15%.

I actually noticed the bug when firefox was trying to load websites,
that were currently down. In these cases the CPU usage was even higher,
roughly +25-30%.
