Had the same bug running kernel 3.11 on Mint 15 (which is based on Raring). Everything was fine for a long time until suddenly one day while downloading a torrent!!! my filesystem locked to read-only and torrent stopped. Reboot solved it, but two days later, it happened again. Definitely not a hardware issue as Elementary on kernel 3.2 on another partition is running perfectly. Compiz is using 35% - 45% CPU just moving windows from the left to right edge of the screen. Compiz is using 3.3% CPU at first then when I move a window to snapping zone, the animation is sluggish, then compiz' CPU usage spikes to 35%, then later it becomes smoother. But it stays at 35%-45% while moving a window. Xorg is also using 10%CPU all the time. Is that normal? I have a 3.5GHZ quad Phenom. All the UI elements like the dash feel sluggish as well, including fade, preview, etc., but preview becomes smoother if I do it a few times. I opened up 12 apps and Firefox, but it's not maxing out the ram and swapping. I'm having a similar issue in Saucy Salamander. After using my computer for a while, GUI slows down somewhat, not unusably slow, but animations are signficantly slower. Even the Window side by side snap animation shows a little lag, I begin to see the fade effect in icon right click menu in launcher bar where I did not notice it before, dash becomes slightly stiffer, etc. Dmesg | tail shows no irq messages for me, but hitting unity --replace solves the problem, until it occurs again. I like Unity but the desktop seems to be a mess with lots of users experiencing bugs either with the dash or with performance, etc.. For me, (version 3.7.9) if I add "export CLUTTER_VBLANK=none" to /etc/environment, it speeds up the animations considerably on my Radeon 4250 chip. I get the same lag. Radeon HD 4250. I noticed that there is less/no lag in Gnome 3.2, but in 3.6 there is lag. Daniel van Vugt: I've been using the system with the xorg.conf you suggested and the problem does seem to have gone away with software cursor. I've been using it since you posted and haven't had the problem SO FAR. Although, using software cursor seems to have problems of it's own. The cursor flickers on and off, becomes invisible on clicking the desktop, and menus aren't rendered properly, often missing a tiny portion. So it's not a reliable fix. kroq-gar78: I'm perfectly able to see the artifact issue on my screen, but when recorded with RecordMyDesktop, the artifacts did not show up in the video. I'm unsure what to do. I'll try to explain the problem better. When I take my cursor to the top edge of the screen, there will appear an artifact like a white dotted line (or a white dash) near the cursor at the top edge. And if I move the cursor to the left or right, the artifacts will move with the cursor.
