2007-04-12 Thread Ralph
I have exactly the same problem (Bug# 98821)on an Acer Aspire 1414WLCi.
I'm not happy staying on -12. With i2c-ec blacklisted the only problem
that I have noticed I am experiencing with -14 is the inability to
monitor the battery (cannot see it at all) and the power monitor thinks
AC power is connected all the time even when it is disconnected.

[Bug 337351] Re: kubuntu 9.04 freezes all the time

2009-05-09 Thread Ralph
I applied all updates to May 8th and now experience freezes - 2 when
using Firefox and 1 in Dolphin. The 2 in Firefox completely froze the
system (mouse, cursor, keyboard) and had to manually power off. In
Dolphin I still had the mouse (but no response to clicking) and could
Ctl-Alt-Del to get a shutdown response; I only ended the session and
was able to re-login successfully.

[Bug 363052] [NEW] fixrefox / new wave theme / wrong font color in menu bar

[Bug 278318] Re: video tearing with textured video on intel card

2008-11-13 Thread Ralph
I just tested the patched driver and it solves the problem for me.

After disabling textured video in xorg.conf, mplayer, totem-gstreamer
and vlc use the overlay port and the screen tearing is gone. So with
this patch enabled again I think we'll be able to consider this bug as
solved.

Flash does also still have video tearing for me, but I think it simply
doesn't use xv but videos still play fine and don't suddenly stop for me
as j described. I also don't see the initial screen flicker that has
been reported.

tghazali: After installing the new driver, you can disable textured video in
your xorg.conf. To do this, simply add Option "TexturedVideo" "false" in the
Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf like this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "TexturedVideo" "false"
EndSection

Finally, thanks to all the people posting great workarounds here and of
course to Bryce Harrington for solving this thing!

[Bug 299376] [NEW] Firefox crashes when running some Java apps

2008-11-18 Thread Ralph
Public bug reported:

Hello. I use Firefox 3.0.3 under Ubuntu 8.10.

I often use a webpage for managing my parental leave. In Sweden this is done by
logging at a webpage by using a system called BankID (similar to loggin in to a
bank).
Anyhow, since upgrading to 8.10 (32 bit), the java applet on this webpage
(http://www.forsakringskassan.se/inloggning/privatpersoner/index.php then click
on "BankID") hangs firefox!

I've tried with Sun java plugin 6 and 5, both crash!
And I've tried with IcedTea on Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit. In this case I can log in,
but not "sign" (also hangs) when I've finished with my business.

Now, I've tried with Firefox 3.0.3 and Sun java plugin 6 on Opensolaris,
and this works! From what I can see, both OSes use the same version of
the java plugin (1.6.0-10 b33) and Firefox 3.0.3; but something is
obviously different!

I don't know where to find any logs from Firefox, but since it hangs I'm
not sure if any logs are produced.

[Bug 305030] Re: Failed to print document - can't prompt for authorization

2009-03-19 Thread Ralph
I have a similar problem with IPP printing that requires authentication,
and I think it's the same bug (or related at least).

I set up the printer (IPP) and the first time I printed I was prompted for a
password, but it worked.
After this, however, I got the authentication error described above.

After som digging, I have it kind of working by doing this:
1. Changing the URI in /etc/cups/printers.conf from
DeviceURI ipp://:631/printers/printer1
to
DeviceURI ipp://USER:PASSWORD@:631/printers/printer1
2. Removed myself from the lpadmin group.

Now I can print using lpr or Acroreader (which uses lp/lpr), but I still
can't print from Evince!

Adding the USER:PASSWORD in system-config-printer does not work, but manually
editing /etc/cups/printers.conf did.
As a first try, I commented out the "AuthInfoRequired" line, but it crept back
in when I restarted Cups!

Another thing which may or may not be related is that I can't change the
printer settings for this printer that require authentication. [And yes, I
tried it while still begin in the lpadmin group...]
If I use the Cups web interface, it works however. But it's not very
convenient...

If I'm reading this right, it shows my phone has a firmware version that
would be included in that header file both before and after the patch
however the product ID is different so it isn't applying. I'm not that
great at linux so I don't know if that file 'unusual_devs.h' is on my
pc. However it does look like someone else has attempted to patch it:

http://archives.free.net.ph/message/20081205.004856.d56281f9.en.html

If the phone worked previously then surely someone can check the file
history in whatever code versioning system linux uses. If I knew how to
patch my kernel with some of these entries I could test them.

archive.com/dor...@mailman.lug.org.uk/msg00202.html He reports exactly
the same symptoms.

The fix was to install the python-glade package, apparently, although I
can't find that listed; http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords
=python-glade&searchon=names&suite=all§ion=all

It seems the package dependencies for usb-imagewriter are incorrect.

2009-06-21 Thread Ralph Taylor
Thanks Stefan.

My initial build ran fine for me, but I will admit to only briefly
running it.

Can you confirm the steps to recreate? Have you ever used the app before
and therefore had a .BloGTK folder in your home directory?

Stefan,

I've just tried a more detailed test on Karmic, starting with no
~/.BloGTK folder and setting up my wordpress account and everything
appears fine. http://djnrrd.wordpress.com/2009/06/21/test-blog-post/ <
There's the post I made.

Re: [Bug 372932] Re: package libqtgui4 4.4.3-0ubuntu1.2 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-05-07 Thread Ralph Palmer
Thanks, Jonathan -

I tried
sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-gui_4.5.0-0ubuntu4_i386.deb
and got
rm: cannot remove
`/var/cache/apt/archives/libqt4-gui_4.5.0-0ubuntu4_i386.deb': No such file
or directory

I looked through Nautilus and couldn't find it, either. Just to make sure, I
did a locate on the file and also came up blank.

So, I went ahead and did sudo apt-get upgrade. Here are the results:

[Bug 338669] Re: (Needs UXA) painting artifacts after qt4.5 upgrade on intel chipset

2009-04-29 Thread Ralph Janke
IMHO this is not a minor issue. Every machine I have installed jaunty on
has this problem. This happens by default when the machine is upgraded
and reduces the desktop experience of users especially non-geeks that we
want to win over.

[Bug 371079] [NEW] [jaunty] kdm does not start kwin

2009-05-02 Thread Ralph Janke
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdm

After upgrade from hardy through intrepid to jaunty, kdm does not start
kwin anymore, therefore, no windows-decorations are shown.

I had to install the nvidia driver 185.19 in order to get anything
working. Now there are no problems in the Xorg.0.log file anymore.
However, as said, the system is not usable without a windows decorator.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Update Notifier icon would provide useful status information

2009-05-03 Thread Ralph Green
Howdy,
I was ignoring this behavior on my Jaunty systems at first. I thought it was
a bug that would be fixed soon. I see others agreed that it was a bug, but it
does not look like it will be fixed. So, I have been thinking about what to do.
First, I have to say that I like the notification OSD messages. They are
great for messages that should not last. And, I am grateful that Matthew Paul
Thomas understands that voting is a horrible way to decide issues of interface
design. But, there is a real problem here. Mr Shuttleworth let the discussion
go on for a while before he stepped in and made his decision. It was not the
decision I wanted, but I would say he was respectful about it, so lets not
complain, but do something constructive. I don't have this idea completely
worked out, but here is what I propose to start. First, what I want to
accomplish is the following.
 1. The Update manager should never pop up on the user screen without their
having requested it.
 2. There should be a way for the user to have some indication that fixes or
updates are available.

I think my first attempt will be based upon conky. I use it on
crunchbang and it seems to work fine. I have not used it on regular
Ubuntu, so there could be disadvantages to be found. I have already
configured automatic updates to be off. I'll do that for any machine I
setup now for people. My hope is that I can create a configuration that
others can use and package or document it. Ubuntu can proceed as they
have and people who don't like the automatic running of update manager
will at least have an option.

I saw the gconf hack. That might not be a bad way to fix it for a
while. But, I want some fix that I can carry with me to future versions
of Ubuntu and I gather that the gconf route may only work for a while.

I have not created projects at Launchpad before and I am not sure what
the best way to do this will be. I don't know if I will be creating a
ppa on Launchpad or not.

Wish me luck,
Ralph

[Bug 364745] Re: blogtk crashes on start

2009-06-22 Thread Ralph Taylor
SRU Inclusion Summary:

* BloGTK crashes on Startup in Jaunty, representing a severe regression

* TEST CASE: Install blogtk_1.1-2ubuntu2 in Jaunty. Run application.

* Regression occurred due to a deprecation of the "Default" option in
the ConfigParser module of Python 2.6 Rev 60976. Patch has been
submitted and accepted for Karmic as blogtk_1.1-2ubuntu3

* Debdiff attached for blogtk_1.1-ubuntu2.9.04

* Possible regression of this patch for previous users of BloGTK with
Python < 2.6 Rev 60976 where the existing configuration files still use
the "Default" option. This can be worked around by deleting the
~/.BloGTK configuration directory and reconfiguring the accounts through
the application.

[Bug 392369] [NEW] code in README.Debian incorrect, generates bad key

2009-06-25 Thread Kenyon Ralph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dkimproxy

At the bottom of README.Debian there is some code that suggests it will
generate the DKIM DNS entry. This code needs an additionl backslash
before the n on the first line. Either that, or just single-quote the \n
like '\n'. Without this change, the resulting key is messed up.

[Bug 90863] Re: ck804xrom ck804xrom_init_one(): Unable to register resource ... kernel bug?

2009-07-05 Thread Ralph Corderoy
There seems to be two signs of problems here. One is the "ck804xrom
ck804xrom_init_one(): Unable to register resource
0xff00-0x - kernel bug?" which seems to be
nothing to worry about according to the above.

The other is the "resource map sanity check conflict: 0xff00
0x 0xfff8 0xfff80fff pnp 00:0b" which seems to have been
ignored. From Google, it seems this can be the detection of a real bug
in a driver, e.g. http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-
Lists/Kernel/2008-10/msg08462.html

I think this is because apport suggests to report a bug when the

if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

2009-07-15 Thread Kenyon Ralph
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make
Ubuntu better. However, it seems that you are not using a software
package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories, but by LinuxMint.
Because of this the Ubuntu project can not support or fix your
particular bug. Please report this bug to the provider of the software
package. Thanks!

If you are interested in learning more about software repositories and
Ubuntu the following pages should be informative:

After I saw :

I removed "raden.modeset=0" from grub kernel cmdline and rebooted.

No, to my big surprise:
1. There is no kernel mode setting any more and the
2. ati radeon module loads and I do have direct opengl renderering and I can
3. enable Desktop Effects .

[Bug 322306] [NEW] linux-source-2.6.28-6 squashfs_fs.h misspelling export

2009-01-28 Thread Ralph Ulrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.28

For sure a misspelling in
/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.28-6.16/ubuntu/include/linux/squashfs_fs.h

-
#define SQUASHFS_MKFLAGS(noi, nod, check_data, nof, no_frag, always_frag, \
duplicate_checking, exortable) (noi | (nod << 1) | (check_data
<< 2) \

I guess "exortable" wants to be spelled: "exportable" !

[Bug 253286] Re: kdevelop project was broken when going to 8.10

2009-02-22 Thread Ralph Navarro
I have tested Christian's technique of updating kdevappwizard's copy of
ltmain.sh and can now create new C++ projects that build properly.
However, a better fix might be for kdevappwizard to get its ltmain.sh
(and any other libtool files) from the installed libtool instead of
using a copy that can get outdated. kdevelop would then be able to use
any libtool updates that were installed.

[Bug 263748] Re: escputil crashed with SIGSEGV in ____strtoll_l_internal()

2009-02-23 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Ubuntu 8.04, escputil 5.0.2-2ubuntu1. Option -C and -p require an
argument, and complain correctly when one is missing. The long
versions, --choices and --patterns, are incorrectly defined as having no
argument so getopt_long() doesn't indicate there's a problem and the
shared code for -C/--choices attempts to handle the missing argument.

src/escputil/escputil.c has

  { "short-name", 0, NULL, (int) 'S' },
  { "choices", 0, NULL, (int) 'C' },
  { "patterns", 0, NULL, (int) 'p' },
  { NULL,   0,  NULL,   0 }
};

The `0' for "choices" and "patterns" should be 1.

[Bug 334117] [NEW] no wakeup from S3

2009-02-24 Thread Ralph Moser
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Version
Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04
All updates installed (25.2.09)

I recently got a new Mainboard. (Asus M3N78-EM)
Sleeping the system works without problems. The power led is flashing.
After waking it up i get I/O errors on my harddrive. I have tested this with
different disks. The disk is connected to a sata port controlled by the Geforce
8200 chipset. The disk is simpy not accessible. This leads into a crash of the
whole system. It beaves like when you disconnect the harddrive while the system
is running.

I also tested this with Intrepid. Same problem. I only installed Jaunty
to check if the problem is gone.

Changing the SATA mode to AHCI, RAID or SATA makes no difference. I have
updated my bios to the last version.

This bug is very annoying because i use this board in my HTPC and my
desktop.

[Bug 319210] Re: [jaunty] segfault during X startup with randr < 1.2 drivers

2009-02-25 Thread Ralph Green
Howdy,
My i815 based system could not start X because of this error. I found a
simple solution for now. Edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and add a line that
says:
 Option "NoAccel""true"
in the Device section. There are some references on a RedHat board about this
making X very slow. It is performing OK for my needs. I am using this as a
test box for jaunty and a Miro box after jaunty goes prime time. It plays
videos fine now.

[Bug 249436] Re: Firefox 3 displays JPEG with much colour banding compared to Firefox 2

2009-03-06 Thread Ralph Corderoy

This shows you too have a 16bpp X display. So it's definitely a Firefox
regression with Ubuntu's move from Firefox 2 to Firefox 3 for displaying
JPEGs on a 16bpp X display. You should find that using Firefox 2
(package firefox-2 in 8.04 for example) displays that page fine.

Obviously, trying to view photographs (JPEGs) with FF3 is pointless,
rendering (NPI) it useless for common use.

[Bug 274747] Re: python-gtk gtk.gdk.threads_enter hangs

2009-03-08 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Ubuntu 8.10, pida 0.5.1-5. On starting it you get the small gray window
appear in the centre of the screen, but it stays empty; the "love"
message doesn't appear. Nothing ever happens. Closing the window using
the menu on the panel icon results in "it's not responding, force quit"
which can kill it.

strace suggests it's getting stuck on futex(2). I suspect a race
condition as one of the attempts to start it, identical to all the
others, succeeded.

Note, a separate issue is choosing Emacs for the embedded editor without
having Emacs installed. Then it just stops with "[Errno 2] No such file
or directory" because a child process tried
"execve("/usr/local/sbin/emacs", ["emacs", "--parent-id", "81789128",
"-f", "server-start", "-l", "/home/peter/.pida2/pida_emacs_in"...], [/*

[Bug 328167] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon eating 100% CPU at login in Jaunty

2009-03-03 Thread Ralph Giles
I have a very similar problem on x86_64, gnome-keyring 2.25.92-0ubuntu1.
Sometimes when I log in gnome-keyring-daemon is hung using 100% cpu.
Sometimes it works for a while, then hangs when asked for a key by an
ssh invocation. I've only had the problem since upgrading to jaunty last
week.

Attaching with gdb I got the following backtrace:

Is there a work-around for this? My development environment is
effectively unusable without an ssh key-agent, and since restarting a
global agent requires logging out, I consider this a very serious issue.

I'm aware of that. I thought the hang in poll() would be useful
information even if you didn't have a symbol table for the package.

Is there a package with debug information I can install? Otherwise I'll
try to build a version myself and see if it happens again.

@Jerone
Thanks for the suggestion, but that leaves no agent running at all. I
don't mind killing the thing, but I need a key agent which can be shared
between multiple terminal windows, such as used to be provided by starting the
session within ssh-agent.

Oops, ssh-agent is running, and the workaround does work for me. Sorry

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2009-01-18 Thread Ralph Corderoy
I've acpi-support 0.109-0hardy2. There's one remaining issue that I'll
point out in case others come searching. One of my drives has a -B of
64 by default. This is from `hdparm -I' having gone from power-up to
single-user mode.

In the past, I'd altered /etc/hdparm.conf to have `spindown_time = 60',
IOW `hdparm -S', for the drive and that gets applied on a normal boot.
It was working; the drive would spindown after five minutes of
idleness.

Now, the drive's -B is being set, for the first time, to -B 254 on
booting. As this is over 127, my drive never spins down from idleness.
Nor will it `spin down now, dammit' with `hdparm -y'. (I'm working
around it with -B 127 after booting has finished.)

I don't know what the solution is, having not read through all the
comments to see the underlying problem that's trying to be solved, but
perhaps the drive's existing -B setting needs examining as part of
determining the new value, i.e. don't mess with the top-bit.

I don't know. Due to bug #222458 I manually process /etc/hdparm.conf
a second time after booting has finished.

awk '$1 ~ /^\/dev\/disk\// && $2 == "{" && NF == 2 { print $1 }' \
/etc/hdparm.conf |
while read d; do
sudo env DEVNAME=$d /lib/udev/hdparm
done

Don't forget the user that, like me, added the spindown at least in
April 2008, if not before. A few days ago, his drive stopped spinning
down because of acpi-support's changes. It's not obvious to him to
think he needs to further modify the year-old /etc/hdparm.conf. Instead
he has to investigate and hopefully, like me, find this bug. As I said
earlier, that's one reason I'm describing the problem.

As I see it, the released fix can stop some drives spinning down that
were correctly configured before.

[Bug 318980] Re: acpi-support's 90-hdparm.sh overwrites hdparm.conf's apm settings

2009-01-20 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Note, the hard drive in /etc/hdparm.conf can be specified by one of its
several names, possibly a different name from that which acpi-support is
using, e.g. /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST320423A_3EJ0GMSY versus /dev/sdb.

[Bug 320174] [NEW] linux-source-2.6.28 compile error with squashfs3.4

2009-01-22 Thread Ralph Ulrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.28

On Ubuntu-Jaunty I tried to compile linux-source-2.6.28-5.13 with a newer
version of squashfs (version 3.4 ).
After copying squash3.4 files to /usr/src/linux/ubuntu/squashfs the compile
breaks in this directory with ERROR 2
and a message: unknown TASK_NORMAL and unknown TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE

Where do TASK_NORMAL and TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE come from?
(With a vanilla kernel 2.6.28.1 I don't get this error and squashfs3.4 compiles
its module.)

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
