[Bug 598205] Re: the laby screen is white instead of the drawing of the ant and the surrounding

2010-07-06 Thread Kenyon Ralph
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this
bug as a bug in laby.

For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of
applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can
be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the
application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more about
this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 270479] Re: Debian/Ubuntu netpbm is many years out-of-date with upstream

2010-06-30 Thread Ralph Corderoy
I used pgmtopbm(1) on 9.10 only to find users on other distributions had
problems. Turns out later netpbms deprecate pgmtopbm, saying
pamditherbw(1) is its replacement. Ubuntu's netpbm doesn't have
pamditherbw; it's too old and crufty. Debian/Ubuntu have forked
netpbm, with all the problems that creates. If there are licensing
issues then can we have a netpbm-nonfree for those of us that want to
co-exist with the other distros?

netpbm is a venerable workhorse. It's a shame that Ubuntu effectively
doesn't have it.

[Bug 598040] [NEW] Google Streetview detects Flash isn't version 10

2010-06-24 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Public bug reported:

Google Streetview seems to have stopped working with package
flashplugin-nonfree 10.0.1.218+really9.0.277.0ubuntu1 on 8.04, Hardy.
I've been a happy user for months but on 2010-06-22, on dropping the
orange man on the map, a balloon appears saying To use street view, you
need Adobe Flash Player version 10 or newer. It was fine last week.

I think it must only be the check for the version of Flash that's
failing because if I visit a site that embeds Streetview, e.g.

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-14227569.html

and hit the Streetview link under the main picture, Streetview still
works fine. (This isn't a workaround however!)

Not having Streetview anymore is a pain for 8.04 repository users. I've
no doubt I could ditch flashplugin-nonfree and install a later version
from Adobe's site but sticking to the repos is an attraction of a LTS
release.

report bugs effectively http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html.
We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the
problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

 At a minimum, we need:
 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
 2. the behavior you expected, and
 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Re: [Bug 18572] Re: modem_applet: waitpid()'s return value causes wedging.

2010-06-08 Thread Ralph Corderoy

I've obtained gnome-applets_2.30.0.orig.tar.gz and
gnome-applets_2.30.0-0ubuntu2.diff which I think are 10.04's. The
original code is as above when I opened the bug although the line
numbers are slightly different. The diff doesn't change them in any
way. 12_modem_applet_waitpid_fix.patch still applies OK with an offset
of -15 lines.

So the problem remains in the code. My concern over the patch remains,
detailed in #3 above. waitpid() is clearly being wrongly used. That
can be fixed without further test results. Then the underlying problem
may come to light once the code processes waitpid's response properly.

[Bug 589108] Re: pae kernel installed by kvm will not boot

2010-06-04 Thread Ralph Green
Howdy,
I am confused about the apport-collect part. I understand how to use that
program once the system is booted. In this case, I don't get the kernel
loaded, because it cannot find my root filesystem. Do I run it after I reboot
back with the non pae kernel and will it still have any useful information to
collect?

I can take a spare hard drive and install the daily build of Maverick to test
as you ask. I don't see any alternate installer images. The regular image
does not let me setup an encrypted swap, so I would not really use the system
much. This leads to a follow-up question. Do you know if alternate installer
images will be arriving soon? If so, I should probably wait a bit. If they
won't be here soon, I can do the test and then wipe the disk. The bug was
fairly easy to reproduce on Lucid. I can see why you would also want to know
if it exists in the current Maverick. I'll wait until I see a response here
and then I can decide what to download and test.
Good day

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

I am running an AMD-64 system with 32 bit kernel and all updates as of today
for Release 10.04. I have 2 GB of ram and I installed kvm and a couple of
related tools today. My hard drive is laid out like this.
  sda1 - /boot ext2
  sda2 - encrypted swap
  sda3 - /usr xfs
  sda5 - / xfs
  sda6 - /public xfs

Installing kvm caused a new kernel to be installed and grub.cfg was modified
to make the new kernel the default. The menu entry for the new kernel
describes it as: Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-22-generic-pae. These 3 lines in
grub.cfg(last part is munged because I don't know if this is sensitive) were
also edited:
- - It used to say- - - - -
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set eab686fd-b09a-4386-bb51-x
- - It now says- - - - -
insmod xfs
set root='(hd0,3)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 83428bb0-2072-4330-b0a5-x

When the computer boots this kernel, it stop and says uuid=c239b85b-
fbd4-4d6e-9524-xxx does not exist. Dropping to shell! and I get an
initramfs prompt. That is the uuid of /dev/sda5, which is the root
partition. I edited grub.cfg to fix the 3 lines, and put /dev/sda5 on
the kernel line and now I get /dev/sda5 does not exist. Dropping to
shell!

I then edited the default to make it boot my old kernel and the system
comes up fine.

I found the bug when installing kvm, but I don't know if that is the
right package to report this under. It may be the kernel, and so I
specified the kernel above.

2010-06-03 Thread Ralph Janke
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all
reported bugs in a timely manner.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and
your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a
lot if you could test the current Ubuntu version (10.04). If you can test it,
and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs
by running apport-collect bug #, and any other logs that are relevant for
this particular issue.

Re: [Bug 412292] Re: mic not working on ALC883 in Acer Ferrari 1004 laptop with Ubuntu 9.04

2010-05-25 Thread Ralph Navarro
But people HAVE been confirming this problem!

So is this the policy of fixing bugs? No response by development means the
problem is fixed? I mean why bother to report if development won't take the
time to investigate and provide a solution?

[Bug 575392] [NEW] ksoftirqd high CPU on 10.04-LTS Server

2010-05-04 Thread Ralph Forsythe
Public bug reported:

On an HP DL380G6 running a fresh install of 10.04 LTS Server 64-bit, I
observed ksoftirqd hitting the CPU (up to 100%). Fortunately it limited
itself to one core. I did not see this on 9.10 Server 64-bit on the
same hardware. I installed the mainline kernel from today
(2.6.34-999-generic) and the problem did correct itself.

I am attaching output from 'apport-bug -p linux' with the stock kernel
and bug present; obviously I cannot do the same for the mainline kernel,
but please let me know if there is any other information I can gather to
help determine what is different.

Per the request near the end of the responses in Bug #183461, I am
filing a new bug report for this issue.

[Bug 554069] Re: xscreensaver autostarted in KDE session

2010-04-24 Thread Ralph Janke
I am not sure why this is fixed released! if there is a fix, there
should at least be a reference to it, or some kind of indication which
package version has fixed it. This way nobody can understand what has
been done to fix the problem, and afaik it is still existing on my
laptop.

[Bug 257135] Re: notify-send(1) can't replace an existing notification

2010-04-22 Thread Ralph Corderoy
I consider it a bug that the underlying mechanism returns an ID and
allows for its replacement yet the userspace command doesn't. It's
restricting the usefulness of the mechanism.

[Bug 384924] Re: [iwlagn] Wireless stops working for seconds at a time

2010-04-22 Thread Kenyon Ralph
I noticed that on Debian Squeeze with iwlagn (Intel WiFi Link 5100 in a
Dell Latitude 2100) and power management enabled, I get very poor
network performance: high packet loss and large latencies. The laptop-
mode-tools package by default enables power management for iwlagn via
/etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/wireless-iwl-power.conf when the laptop is on
battery power. Ubuntu may not work the same way, but use iwconfig to see
if your wireless device has power management enabled when your wireless
connection goes bad.

Re: [Bug 24741] Re: Installing samba gives spurious account_policy_get failed messages

2010-04-21 Thread Ralph Corderoy

The fix is in the development release (Lucid), not backported to
  Karmic.

Making it useless to the majority of Ubuntu users, who are not all on
Lucid and many of whom will not be upgrading to Lucid for some time...
(need to wait for bugfxes to be released, wontfixes to be worked
aroud, and spuriously removed hardware support to be added back
 in...etc)

You could apply your argument to the fix of every bug, not just this
one. It's not practical in terms of manpower to fix a bug for all the
versions. The tone of your comment suggests you know this.

[Bug 544471] Re: Download unavailable in several countries

2010-04-21 Thread Ralph Wabel
Switzerland is now also redirected to the EU store. But why EU store as
Switzerland has its own store http://de-ch.7digital.com/
7digital own swiss store has the prices in swiss francs and not euro.

[Bug 567606] [NEW] Power option switch from .. gives black screen

2010-04-20 Thread Peter Ralph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have three users. If I login, play cards, AisleRiot Solitaire, for
two or three games and then click the power icon, top RH corner, and
click on one of the other usernames then the current session closes
and a new session starts for the new user.If I go through the
procedure again then that user session closes and a new session starts
for the new user, can be user 1 or 3.

However, if I start, * switch to another user * and then try to Switch
from xyz the current session closes, the login screen is displayed
and I am invited to login. If I then click on the original user and
input the password the screen goes black, a white arrow appears and it
sits there for up to three hours. The white arrow follows mouse
movements. I have to use the computer restart button to restart.

* means play cards as in opening paragraph.

This is repeatable and happened to me on Mon 19th April and Tue 20th
April.
