[Bug 726790] Re: python-vm-builder-0.12.4+bzr462-0ubuntu1: swap partitions fail to be created properly when "lucid" is the target

2011-03-01 Thread Randy Barlow
I moved the ticket status back to "New". I've actually been wondering,
is it appropriate for me to alter the ticket state back to new after I
provide the requested information, or would it have been better if I
left it at "Incomplete"?

2011-03-01 Thread Randy Barlow
I am attaching a build script that uses a partitions file to demonstrate
the issue. When you run this script, the traceback that I listed doesn't
occur (not sure why). However, the built machine does still complain
about /dev/sda2, and you can verify that it does not have swap.

[Bug 726790] [NEW] python-vm-builder-0.12.4+bzr462-0ubuntu1: swap partitions fail to be created properly when "lucid" is the target

2011-02-28 Thread Randy Barlow
Public bug reported:

I am using version 0.12.4+bzr462-0ubuntu1 in Ubuntu Natty. I've noticed
that when I build a lucid virtual machine, it complains during boot.

During build, I see this in the build log:

2011-02-28 15:36:01,700 INFO: Adding type 3 partition to disk image:

At the end of the build log, there is a traceback:

(In some cases useful info about processes that use
the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1))

None of this happens when I do not specify a swap partition. This also
doesn't happen when I build a hardy machine (I've only tried hardy and
lucid as targets)

Once you boot the machine, you will see this message:

The disk drive for /dev/sda2 is not ready yet or not present
Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery

Let me know if you need any further information!

[Bug 459899] Re: evolution mapi does not show calender entries

2010-09-22 Thread Randy Barlow
I experience this problem on Maverick with evolution 2.30.3-1ubuntu3 and
evolution-mapi 0.30.3-1ubuntu1. Before I upgraded to Maverick, I was
able to view my calendar.

BTW, I did already put this on the upstream bug report for you. I

[Bug 628102] Re: virt-manager.py crashed with SIGSEGV in dbusmenu_menuitem_property_set_value()

2010-09-02 Thread Randy Barlow
I just updated this morning (Maverick Beta!) and then tried it, and
virt-manager crashed again. I'm using version 0.8.4-3ubuntu6. If there's
any additional data I can provide, let me know. This problem is highly
reproducible on my system. Virsh seems to be working well for me in the
meantime, so I have a workaround at least.

Is there any reason this bug should be private?

who can see it from Canonical? Is it likely to get less attention? I
assume this one got automatically marked private because of one of the

[Bug 574588] [NEW] The --nocache flag for qemu-nbd doesn't work

2010-05-03 Thread Randy Barlow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

If I try to attach a disk image using qemu-kvm to a network block
device, it will not work if I use the --nocache flag. Here is an
example:

$ qemu-nbd -c /dev/nbd7 --nocache whowho.qcow2
$ ls /dev/nbd7*
/dev/nbd7

If you look in dmesg, there aren't any mentions of the above commands.
However, this works:

$ sudo qemu-nbd -c /dev/nbd7 whowho.qcow2

$ ls /dev/nbd7*
/dev/nbd7 /dev/nbd7p1 /dev/nbd7p2

And in dmesg, I see this:

[ 8489.904028] nbd7: p1 p2

The latter command doesn't actually always work. Sometimes it just takes
several tries. When it doesn't work, there are no error messages or any
mention in the logs about it not working. It would be nice if it would
give some more info about what is happening.

[Bug 567037] Re: not able to send messages on gwibber

2010-04-21 Thread Randy Barlow
Since I didn't create this ticket, I can't run apport-collect. My
experience with gwibber-2.30.0.1-0ubuntu1 is that it sometimes seems to
get stuck. It won't show any updates anymore, and it won't send any
messages I write. It doesn't crash or report any errors when this
happens, unfortunately. I wrote about it on this bug, as it seems like
similar behavior to me.

$ qemu-nbd -n -b localhost -p 2000 -P 1 base.qcow2
qemu-nbd: error while reading

Where base.qcow2 is just a regular qcow image. The image is definitely
valid, as I can run it with kvm just fine. Unfortunately, there doesn't
seem to be any useful information in the kernel log about this, and
there isn't any further information that I know how to get that would be
useful.

[Bug 544350] [NEW] solr-tomcat5.5 package is broken

2010-03-22 Thread Randy Barlow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: solr-tomcat5.5

This bug may be related to #321889, but I think it is distinct. The
package solr-tomcat5.5 cannot be installed in either Karmic or Lucid, as
there is no tomcat5.5 package for these distributions, but rather
tomcat6. The solr-tomcat5.5 package should be removed from both Karmic

[Bug 539231] Re: -t option isn't available in python-vm-builder 0.12.2-0ubuntu3

2010-03-17 Thread Randy Barlow
I made a commit to the branch for this ticket. I've definitely gotten it
to use the -t flag in some places, but there are still files being
created in /tmp. I haven't yet identified the code that is placing files
in there, but for now I can't spend any more time on this. Hopefully my
work is a good start for someone to finish this!

[Bug 540446] [NEW] python-vm-builder_0.12.2-0ubuntu3 doesn't clean up temporary files when interrupted

2010-03-17 Thread Randy Barlow
Public bug reported:

If you interrupt the operation of python-vm-builder with the
KeyboardInterrupt, it won't clean up after itself. The version of
vmbuilder that comes with Karmic I believe might do this (haven't
checked, but it does seem to go through a cleanup step). This would be
friendly behavior.

[Bug 539231] Re: -t option isn't available in python-vm-builder 0.12.2-0ubuntu3

2010-03-17 Thread Randy Barlow
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 536940 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/536940

If I may, I'd like to contend that this is not a duplicate of bug
#536940. That ticket is about having a --tmpfs flag that will allow us
to indicate that we wish the VM to be built in a tmpfs. That ticket is
also marked as a wishlist item. This ticket is about having a flag that
allows us to specify a path at which we would like the VM to be built.
The -t flag can be used to build in tmpfs, but it can also be used to
build in /home or wherever else I would like. What if my system had a
small /tmp partition, but I had space somewhere else? Also, this flag
should be a good bit simpler to implement that --tmpfs. Can we please
have both flags? If not, I'd prefer this one over --tmpfs, personally.
Thank you for your consideration!

[Bug 539938] [NEW] Xorg crashed, not sure why, during screensaver

2010-03-16 Thread Randy Barlow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Unfortunately, I don't know what happened. I was away from my computer
for a while, and so the screen saver came on. It could even have been
long enough that the screen went black. I was talking to a friend, and
heard the "hand drums login sound", and that's when I realized that X
had crashed as I was seeing the login screen. Sorry I couldn't be more
specific than that, as that's all that I know.

[Bug 536942] Re: --firstboot option broken in 0.12.2-0ubuntu3

2010-03-15 Thread Randy Barlow
Hey John! I haven't made any workaround yet, but I was considering
something that sounds more complicated than I like. You could make an
init script that does the first boot work, removes itself from the
default run level, and then removes itself. There isn't a builtin first
boot functionality to Ubuntu that I've been able to find, but if anybody
knows of something like that I'd love to know as well!

[Bug 539231] [NEW] -t option isn't available in python-vm-builder 0.12.2-0ubuntu3

2010-03-15 Thread Randy Barlow
Public bug reported:

The version of python-vm-builder that came with Karmic had a -t flag
that you could use to specify where the VM should be built. This was
handy, as it allowed me to build the VM on a tmpfs that I mounted
manually (since the --tmpfs flag didn't work). This flag isn't accepted
by the new version that comes with Lucid, and there doesn't seem to be
any replacement for its functionality.

[Bug 512316] [NEW] --tmpfs flag doesn't do anything on vm-builder

2010-01-25 Thread Randy Barlow
Public bug reported:

I've been using vm-builder for a while. It's super cool, but it looks to
me like the --tmpfs option doesn't actually do anything. When I grep for
tmpfs in /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/VMBuilder, I only see one
file, and all it is doing is adding the --tmpfs option. I couldn't find
anything in there that was checking to see if that option had been
passed or not, so it seems to not make much of a difference. Also, it
definitely is creating files in /tmp when it is building my vms. Am I
missing something?

[Bug 495627] Re: Dell E6500 unable to use native resolution (monitor doesn't support reduced blanking)

2009-12-11 Thread Randy Barlow
Short story:
So I'm an idiot. We can close this ticket. It turns out that my laptop's
native resolution is 1280x800.

Longer story:
I had assumed I had the higher resolution, because this is a company issued
laptop, and we ordered several of the same device. My coworkers all use
Windows, and I'm the loner Ubuntu guy. We just got these, and I found out that
one of my coworker's machines was running at 1920x1200. It turns out that Dell
must have shipped us different displays on our machines, so I will take it up
with them.

Sorry for the noise!

[Bug 495627] [NEW] Dell E6500 unable to use native resolution (monitor doesn't support reduced blanking)

2009-12-11 Thread Randy Barlow
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I sincerely apologize if this is a duplicate. I didn't see any bug
reports that directly dealt with the "monitor doesn't support reduced
blanking" problem on my specific Intel chipset. I tried the "nomodeline"
kernel boot parameter trick, as I found in another bug report, and I
still was unable to use my laptop's native resolution (1920x1200). I
noticed in the Xorg log that the reduced blanking message appeared next
to the mode I would like to use, which is why I think this may be the
most relevant clue to the problem.

This is a brand new laptop, and I haven't really got a lot invested in
it yet, so I'm currently attempting a dist-upgrade to Lucid to see if
the newer kernel, etc. will solve my problem or not. It would be good to
know if this problem has already been fixed, for the purposes of
assigning importance to this report.

I'd be happy to provide any additional information I can!
