to heed his warning about Unity though as I did have a bit of issues

[Bug 1195425] Re: Corrupted screen using radeon drivers

2013-07-13 Thread Raymond Wells
The patch works for me, also.

@Simos: In your install instructions the apt-get line didn't work, so I used
dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video*deb to install the packages instead, and that seemed
to work, although the dbg packages needed to pull in some additional deps, but
it was fine.
$ sudo dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video*deb
$ sudo apt-get install -f

worked for me.

[Bug 1179113] [NEW] unity crashes with Bus Error when I enable my second monitor.

2013-05-11 Thread Raymond Wells
Public bug reported:

My Setup:

Version: Ubuntu 13.10
Video Card: ATI Radeon 2600XT on Open Source Drivers (fglrx is unavailable for
this card on 13.10)
Montor #1@1920x1080
Monitor #2:@1440x900 on left of Monitor #1

How to reproduce:

Open Displays from the dash. Select the secondary monitor. Turn the
secondary monitor off (in the settings, not the physical button on the
monitor), and click Apply.
Close Displays. Reopen it.
Select the secondary monitor.  Turn the secondary monitor on (in the settings;
not on the monitor, itself.)
Put the secondary monitor to the left of the primary monitor.
Click Apply

Expected Results:
Secondary Display turns on, and I am prompted to keep my settings or revert.

Actual Results:
Brief screen garbage, followed by unity crashing. Whenever I try to resurrect
Unity from a either VT or a terminal emulator running in X, I see Bus Error
(core dumped). This continues until I end my session.

[Bug 1138517] Re: Latest compiz update breaks Java Swing decorations

2013-03-01 Thread Raymond Wells
I can confirm this occurs in OpenJDK 6 7. As an alternative, you can
install Xephyr and a minimal WM

$ sudo apt-get install metacity

The following workaround works for me:

$ Xephyr :1 -screen 1280x800

inside your Xephyr you will have an xterm shell.. type:

$ metacity :1

You will see a titlebar appear on the enclosed xterm window.

Now just run your java applicaiton like you normally would from the
terminal.

( if it is a jar file)
$ java -jar myjavaapp.jar

[Bug 1123108] Re: unity slow on dual monitors (extended desktop)

2013-03-01 Thread Raymond Wells
I am experiencing the same issue... however:

Desktop: Core2Quad Q6600 on Radeon 2600XT (open source drivers) Ubuntu 13.04
6GB RAM/512MB VRAM
Laptop: Core2Duo T6600 on Mobility Radeon 4670 4GB RAM/1GB VRAM

On my desktop I have a 1080p monitor and a 1440x900 monitor.

I've tried 1080p monitors on my laptop, HDTV, and my secondary desktop
monitor, and my laptop is profoundly faster than my desktop. I
understand that it is to be expected as my laptop has a faster card and
2x the VRAM, but the difference in performance seems too much.

CPU usage is low, I think the bottleneck is how the GPU is used. Results from
radeontop:
When the dash opens, Graphics Pipe usage shoots up to 92%. Just typing in the
app lens (or any other lens) causes my graphics pipe usage to sustain at
80~95%, even when the only things in the dash are my text and sorry there are
no applications that match your search. Also, the unity preview animations
are slow and again cause the gpu usage to skyrocket.

Furthermore, moving windows, maximize/minimize all are fast, the only
slowness is with the switcher and the dash.

I hope this helps in narrowing down where the issues are :)

[Bug 988713] Re: Compiz cpu usage high when moving windows

2012-12-26 Thread Raymond Wells
For me, the following workaround worked on both my systems (ATI fglrx driver,
AMD Radeon HD 2600XT, AMD RadeonHD 4600 on fglrx)
I am using the fglrx-legacy ppa, but it will likely work on newer drivers.

1. Install compizconfig-settings-manager.
2. Launch compizconfig settings manager (ccsm)
3. Go to OpenGL, disable Sync to VBlank
4. Go to Workarounds, enable Don't wait for video sync
5. Run the AMD Catalyst Control Center (amdcccle)
6. Go to Display OptionsTear Free on the left panel; enable Tear-Free desktop,
click Apply.
7. Go to 3DMore Settings. Under Wait for Vertical Refresh, set it to 'Off
unless application specifies.', click Apply.
8. Click 'Ok'.
9. Log out and log back in.

You can confirm the workaround by opening a terminal window, typing
'top' and pressing enter, then opening up another application and moving
it around as suggested by shayne.

I am getting about 11% CPU usage in top whilst moving windows, vs about
89-95% before the workaround, and am not seeing any tearing. (CPU usage
is about 20% on my laptop with the HD4670 because it has a less powerful
CPU).

[Bug 1064962] Re: Global menubar items do not work when opening a document directly from nautilus with no LibreOffice instance running

2012-10-27 Thread Raymond Wells
As an aside, can global menu be disabled interim? Or by an environment
variable? (UBUNTU_MENUPROXY does not work) Because as it stands it
renders libreoffice virtually unusable. Even in the cases where the
menu works initially, it will eventually stop working. Removing
libreoffice-gtk is an option I suppose... but then it skips all of the
integration.

Workaround:

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Alt+F2 to summon the command panel, then type ccsm, hit enter

A warning will pop up about how ccsm is an advanced tool, dismiss the
warning

Under the General heading, go to Composite

Pick Unredirect Fullscreen Windows

After you select this Unity may or may not restart, it's okay since the
setting will be applied automatically anyway.

[Bug 1064962] Re: Global menubar items do not work when opening a document directly from nautilus with no LibreOffice instance running

2012-10-25 Thread Raymond Wells
Is this the same bug? On my 12.10 whenever I open a presentation (ODP)
... it doesn't matter if it's from the terminal, nautilius, or
LibreOffice Impress directly, there is no global menu at all; not an
_inactive_ global menu, I mean flat out no menu items at all appear in
the global menu. If I open impress, create a new presentation, then
open a presentation it works... for a while. Eventually, the menu will
just flat out stop responding to events.

The HUD will only work on the new document, but not the openend
document.

[Bug 1054720] Re: [UIFE] Previews: Unable to preview banshee songs in the dash

2012-10-20 Thread Raymond Wells
I think it should be reviewed again, because it broke things on my
desktop with both banshee and rhythmbox installed. It will confuse a
user who has upgraded from 12.04 and expects things to just work. If it
isn't going to be fixed, I think the music previews should just be
disabled or made to show only the album art, track and artist name when

[Bug 1038498] Re: Extreme screen corruption with latest updates in VirtualBox under Quantal

2012-10-20 Thread Raymond Wells
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1021104 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1021104

Something similar happens to me as well on bare metal. I'm using fglrx-
legacy PPA, which could be part of the issue, but the bug I'm getting
looks very similar to that.

[Bug 1068494] [NEW] Song lengths show up as very long

2012-10-19 Thread Raymond Wells
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:

Search for a song name in the music lens.
Right click on it to summon the preview.

Expected Result:
To see the track title along with the actual track length.

Actual Result:
The track title will appear, along with the length and album art... However,
the track length is represented as impossibly long ( 5,000 minutes).

I can reproduce the issue with FLAC, OGG, and MP3 format music. I do
not know if it occurs with AAC or any other formats because I do not
have the codecs installed.

Furthermore, when the play button does nothing. However, the music
displays the proper information in Banshee Rhythmbox.

2012-10-19 Thread Raymond Wells
I did some more testing. I removed banshee. After removing banshee,
and logging out then back in, everything is working. Strange error,
maybe if results from banshee break the lens they should be ignored?

[Bug 1058040] Re: fglrx-installer does not support HD2000-4000 legacy cards

2012-10-04 Thread Raymond Wells
According to: http://www.x.org/wiki/XorgModuleABIVersions

Modules reporting they require a incompatible version number will not
be loaded unless the -ignoreABI option is used. (Modules can also check
ABI versions themselves, and choose which function variant to call or
structure variant to access, based on the reported versions - this is
the option used by some closed source drivers for instance.)

In light of this, would it be possible to somehow force the correct ABI
version with the new XServer legacy fglrx driver?

[Bug 47793] Re: DRI module load fails (undefined symbol: _glapi_Dispatch)

2012-09-15 Thread Raymond Wells
Had the same problem on Quantal Quetzal (beta, x86_64).

DRI modules would not load. In my case it was r600_dri.so

I found the modules in: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri

That directory is not on the path searched by libgl when it tries to load the
modules. I solved it by symlinking:
ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/r600_dri.so /usr/lib/dri/

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-06-14 Thread Raymond Wells
Okay, so I tried messing around with some options, and here's something
that worked for me (on fglrx driver):

- The problem goes away when I turn off Sync to VBlank (ccsm, OpenGL
section). I don't remember having the high CPU usage while idle, but I
did have the usage spikes while dragging windows. On my desktop (Radeon
2600XT), and my laptop (Radeon 4670), turning off Sync to VBlank dropped
compiz's CPU usage while dragging windows from 25-70% to around 3-9%.

I found the following workaround to be effective for me on both my desktop and
laptop to both get rid of the tearing, and :
(requires proprietary ATi drivers.)
1. Turn off Sync to VBlank in ccsm.
2. Open up the Catalyst control center, (command: amdcccle)
3. Turn TearFree Desktop on (it's under Display Options)
4. Change the Wait for vertical refresh setting to On, unless application
specifies. (I had issues with compiz starting up, and changing that fixed it.)

The result will be: compiz running with acceptable CPU usage and no
tearing. The only side effect I've noticed is that sometimes while
moving windows very rapidly, the cursor will jump and the little hand
will become separated from the window it is dragging.

[Bug 803943] Re: compiz consuming a lot of cpu

2012-06-11 Thread Raymond Wells
I had some success by opening up CompizConfig Settings Manager (Alt+F2,
ccsm assuming you have it installed.) and enabling copy to texture I
noticed the CPU usage on my machine dropped from a hard 10% to about 2%
even with programs open. I still find it odd that compiz's CPU usage
spikes when I drag windows or sometimes when I have smooth animations in
windows despite having the fglrx drivers installed, since it's supposed
to be hardware accelerated. Leads me to believe that something is
causing it to do more work than it should on the software side.
