[Bug 1950492] Re: wifi stops working on Dell XPS 9310

2021-11-11 Thread Reece
Same problem here on Ubuntu w/Dell 9310 and AX500.

Reverting to 5.13.0-19 resolved the issue. First reboot didn't fix the
issue, but a full power cycle did.

I used a USB wifi dongle to install. Without that, you might need to
grab the relevant dpkgs and put on a USB stick to update.

sudo apt install linux-headers-5.13.0-19 linux-headers-5.13.0-19-generic
linux-image-5.13.0-19-generic linux-modules-5.13.0-19-generic linux-

[Bug 1823004] Re: Upgrade to 19.04 - cannot install 'install-info'

2019-05-03 Thread Reece
I also received this error upgrading from 18.10. As with others, install
seemed to nearly finish (as judged by the progress bar).

Dell XPS 13 9360 (i7-7500U, Intel HD 620, Kaby Lake GT2)

Two anomalies:
1) I had postgresql multicorn libraries installed from a ppa. I used ppa-purge
to remove them.
2) I noticed two desktop notifications of network interruptions during the
install. I assume that these were related to the installation.

[Bug 1726516] Re: no progress bar while copying files

2019-01-03 Thread Reece
Reproduction and unexpected user experience details:

* In a nautilus window, navigate to a folder that contains a source folder of
large files (e.g., video or pictures) that is sufficient to trigger the copy
progress indicator.
* Create two `test1` and `test2` folders on the Desktop
* In a new nautilus window, open the Desktop folder. At this point, one should
see `test1` and `test2` folders on the desktop and in the Desktop folder in the
nautilus window.
* Copy the source data to `test1` by dragging and dropping in the nautilus
window. The copy progress pie chart in the nautilus window should appear. (Okay
to cancel the copy once the indicator appears.)
* Repeat the copy, this time dragging the source folder to `test2` on the
Desktop (*not* in the nautilus window). On my system (ubuntu 18.10), the
progress indicator never appears.

Many reports have focused on the inconspicuousness of the progress
indicator; I concur with that observation. However, I am more perplexed
by the inconsistency in behavior when copying to folders on the desktop
versus copying to the Desktop folder within a nautilus window. This
behavior seems inconsistent to me.

[Bug 1734147] Re: Ubuntu 17.10 corrupting BIOS - many LENOVO laptops models

2017-11-27 Thread reece callister
this is also affecting my bios on the lenovo ideapad 100 15iby however usb
booting is still possible.
the troubleshooting steps i have taken are.
1) used lenovo's bios update utility from the drivers site of my bios
  https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/cccn21ww.exe (direct link)
2)replaced CMOS battery
3)reached out to the staff of lenovo forums and support staff for help and it
stumped them
4)tried different OS's (i had ubuntu 17.10 but win server 2016 killed the grub
loader (unrelated))
   i tried win server 2016 & win8.1 (the modded version windows 9)
all these were in vein as its still not saving (btw the reason i need server
2016 is to host RDweb applications which you need intel virtualisation on which
is how i found this issue)
if anyone has any solution to this pls email me at ngprule...@gmail.com or

[Bug 1603283] Re: REGRESSION: resume fails on recent 4.4.0-31, works on -28

2016-07-23 Thread Reece
Joseph- I went back to -31 and have tried it for 2 days, including at
least 10 successful suspend/resume cycles. I cannot reproduce the
original issue.

I have no explanation for why my previous repeatable observations are no
longer repeatable, although I did make a couple minor and (seemingly)
unrelated bios setting changes (e.g., fn key lock).

I'm going to mark the issue as invalid. Sorry for the goose chase.

[Bug 1522177] Re: nautilus sporadically very slow to start/refresh

2016-01-06 Thread Reece
Figured this out. Closing.

Cause:
I had intentionally put my home directory under mercurial, primarily to track
config files. .hgignore ignored everything.

The tortoisehg extension apparently ignores .hgignore. When I ran
nautilus with strace, the problem became clear: tortoisehg was
recursively stat'ing my entire home directory.

[Bug 1522177] [NEW] nautilus sporadically very slow to start/refresh

2015-12-02 Thread Reece
Public bug reported:

System: Ubuntu 15.10, x86_64, SSD drive

Nautilus is sporadically extremely slow to start up or refresh a view
even when already running. The effect is bimodal: response is either
nearly immediate or extremely slow. For example, "nautilus ~/" is either
immediately responsive or takes ~10 seconds.

The behavior is independent of directory and invocation method; for
example, invoking via Unity Dash or Chrome's "show in folder" exhibits
similar bimodal responsiveness.

The bimodal switch seems to be related to a combination of when the
directory was last read (likely a cache effect) and whether the
directory had been modified (e.g., perhaps based on directory mtime).

The attached script and output demonstrate the effect on my laptop. It
executes "nautilus ~/" ten times, with sleep times of 0-5 seconds
between each. The data suggest that the bimodal switch due to a putative
cache timeout is ~5 seconds. That is, *all* invocations separated by
more that 5 seconds exhibit the slow mode responsiveness.

This is consistent with my experience, namely that nautilus startup is
*always* slow because real-world use invocations are always more than 5
seconds apart.

Access to the same directories in the terminal are never slow. I am not
aware of any general filesystem sluggishness (e.g., with libreoffice,
emacs, etc).

[Bug 1126221] Re: Switching from multiple to one screen causes windows to go missing

2015-02-05 Thread Reece
Affects me also. 14.04, x86_64, dual monitor (laptop+external).

The symptom is that some windows move after suspend/resume. Some windows
move a little bit (vertically only), and others disappear altogether.
The disappearing windows do show up in the panel and tab switcher.

What's the status of this ticket? Seems odd that a 2 year old bug marked
as high importance is still open.

[Bug 1295267] Re: Windows change Monitor/Desktop after screen lock

2015-01-04 Thread Reece
Follow to my earlier comment (#10):

- Windows move after screen lock + time. (Just screen lock isn't
enough.) It's possible that screen blanking is the trigger.

- Seems to only affect gnome-terminal. This may be because I always keep
it in the lower left corner (by manual snapping).

- Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 are similarly affected. 14.10 was from a fresh
install. The setup (dual monitor, laptop on right, top aligned) has been
the same for years.

[Bug 1247572] Re: Nokia Lumia 620 (WP8) fails to mount reliably via gvfs-mtp in nautilus

2014-12-24 Thread Reece
Kiori's solution didn't work for me.

I ran mtp-detect 10 times, always failing with the same LIBMTP PANIC
message as above.

Ubuntu 14.04, libmtp 1.1.6, Sansa Clip Zip (appropriate libmtp rules
already present).

[Bug 1369288] Re: intel DRI kernel trace: encoder's hw state doesn't match sw tracking (expected 1, found 0)

2014-09-21 Thread Reece
When I figure out how to trigger the bug, I'll test the kernel. The bug
is pretty elusive -- most recently occurred only after ~3 days of USB
activity.

[Bug 1369288] [NEW] intel DRI kernel trace: encoder's hw state doesn't match sw tracking (expected 1, found 0)

2014-09-14 Thread Reece
Public bug reported:

See exception in syslog excerpt, attached.

This occurred while reading a USB disk with a (putatively) bad sector. I
mention this because there was a suspected interaction between DRI and
disk drivers at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66741,
although I think comments further down suggest that it was a misleading
bisect.

[Bug 1295267] Re: Windows change Monitor/Desktop after screen lock

2014-08-26 Thread Reece
Exactly the same issue here.

I've used Ubuntu for years with multiple multi-display setups (one at
work, one or two at home). This did not used to be a problem. The first
occurrences seemed to coincide with the time I bought a new monitor (and
new model) that is 2560x1440. At the same time, I also changed one
external monitor config to over-under rather than side-by-side.

Possibly related: In #1351982
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1351982), I
described a problem in which the panel and indicator bars are
occasionally unresponsive to mouse clicks after an unlock. Relocking
(with ctrl-alt-L) and unlocking restores both reliably. The two bugs
don't seem related functionally, but I think they did start occurring
around the same time.

[Bug 1354146] [NEW] indicator-datetime ignores 12/24 setting for other locations

2014-08-07 Thread Reece
Public bug reported:

indicator-datetime shows auto-detected locations and other locations
in 12h format, regardless of 12/24 setting. See attached image that
clearly shows time as 24h in the top panel and and as 12h alternate
locations. (Time zone setting is UTC in the screenshot, but the symptom
occurs for other timezones.)

I've used 24h and alternate locations for years and I would have thought
I'd have noticed previously.

[Bug 1351982] [NEW] top panel and launcher are unresponsive

2014-08-03 Thread Reece
Public bug reported:

Unity has recently (~2014-07-15) started exhibiting two odd behaviors that are
likely related:
1) The launcher, which is set to autohide, will appear and disappear in 1s
(even though I hover over the launcher). It is unresponsive to clicks.
2) All applets in the top panel are unresponsive to clicks.

1 2 always occur together at some point during a session. That is,
these components work correctly for hours (days?), then become
unresponsive. I have not yet identified the trigger event; screenlocking
or suspend/resume *may* be related, but not reliably so (i.e., I can't
reproduce it this way).

Restarting unity-panel-service (killall unity-panel-service) doesn't
help. The problem is temporarily fixed by logging out/in or rebooting,
but the issue recurs.

The timing of the first occurrence (in July) is probably consistent with
my first use of unity-tweak-tool to set focus follows mouse, although
this hypothesis doesn't explain why the components initially work and
then become unresponsive. Otherwise, my config is pretty stock.

[Bug 1283611] Re: Unity panel partially hidden after dragging files onto it

2014-03-02 Thread Reece
I'm seeing the same thing with the same cause.
Reproducibility is 3 of 3 attempts.
However, I've added many more launchers and know that it is not 100%
reproducible (or perhaps depends on other factors like the contents of the
launcher .desktop file).

** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 13.10, x86_64, indicator-datetime 13.10.0+13.10.20131023.

indicator-datetime provides *no highlighting at all* for the current

date I logged in?). See attached screenshot.

This is related to to several other bugs (below), but the other issues
are apx 2 years old and appear to be inactive.

  Implications and related UI issues:
  - It is too easy for a user to interpret the faint highlighting as today's
date.
  - If another day has previously been clicked (even days earlier), it remains
highlighted. Users will likely expect that the highlighting corresponds to
today's date, not that of a click days earlier.
  - The lack of a go to today button makes it very difficult to focus the

[Bug 1280874] Re: current date not highlighted/wrong date highlighted

2014-02-17 Thread Reece
apport bug data sent

This is reproducible. Steps:

1) Boot ubuntu.
2) Go to calendar (click indicator-datetime). Select a day in the previous or
next month (any day works, but this makes a good example).
3) Click indicator again. The clicked date remains highlighted.

The confusion occurs when there is a long duration between 2 and 3: I
forget I've clicked and the highlighted day is NOT today. Personally, I
don't see any reason to preserve the selected day between drop down
events.

(As an aside, Launchpad has a big button that says Report a bug. It might be
worth recommending ubuntu-bug in that workflow if that's the preferred method
for bug reporting. Thanks for your help and I'll use ubuntu-bug next time.)

[Bug 1277757] [NEW] cups fails to print, debug log lines are blank

2014-02-07 Thread Reece
Public bug reported:

I'm attempting to print to a Dell 2350dn using the Dell ppd. It once
worked and now doesn't, but I use this printer infrequently and don't
know what happened in the interim.

The cups error log has:

E [07/Feb/2014:16:11:53 -0800] [Job 140] Job stopped due to filter errors;
please consult the error_log file for details.
D [07/Feb/2014:16:11:53 -0800] [Job 140] The following messages were recorded
from 16:11:53 to 16:11:53
D [07/Feb/2014:16:11:53 -0800]
(above line repeated apx 40 times)
D [07/Feb/2014:16:11:53 -0800] [Job 140] End of messages
D [07/Feb/2014:16:11:53 -0800] [Job 140] printer-state=3(idle)
D [07/Feb/2014:16:11:53 -0800] [Job 140] printer-state-message=Filter failed
D [07/Feb/2014:16:11:53 -0800] [Job 140] printer-state-reasons=none

Notice that the debug message is blank. There is no indication of which
filter failed or why (other than Filter failed in error_log and in the
print.

I have attempted to reinstall the printer several times with no change.

One of the actions in the interim was to install a set of packages I
installed to support a Canon MF4890dw (cndrvcups-ufr2-us and cndrvcups-
common). I removed (purged) both of those, but the situation is
unchanged.

Any suggestions?

[Bug 1231550] Re: battery status indicator shows 'estimating'

2013-11-17 Thread Reece
Similar issue here, although I think the cause is different.

See attached screenshot.

1) The menu shows estimating... even though the battery is present and charged.
Furthermore, none of the other devices have useful information.

2) Note that the menu icon is for a mouse, not a battery.
If I unplug power, the indicator icon momentarily shows a full battery.
When I plug in again, it switches to a mouse icon.

3) I use 3 mice and 2 keyboards with this laptop. These are Logitech
unified devices. I think what we're seeing is that upower reports all
mice and keyboards registered with the unified receiver, even if not
present.

[Bug 1245538] Re: Mercurial fails abort: No module named repo! with mercurial-git enabled

Same symptom, but the cause for me was a local (home dir) installation
of hgsubversion. Commenting that out resolved the problem. I have
mercurial-git installed and activated, so that is a non-cause in my
case.

[Bug 1070963] Re: libreoffice calc hangs when opening an xls file shared over cifs

2013-08-15 Thread Reece
Same problem here. Ubuntu 13.04, LibreOffice 4.0.2, x86_64

To reproduce:
1) mount smb via nautilius or gvfs-mount
2) open xlsx
3) splash appears and hangs there
4) kill oosplash. This results in a defunct soffice.bin. Other attempts to
start LO fail silently.
5) gvfs-mount -u smb:// immediately unhangs LO. (see gvfs-mount -l for list
of mounts)

And then things then seem relatively happy again.

I don't know about the underlying cause. The only useful addition here
is that gvfs-mount -u seems to obviate rebooting.

When will a backport to Quantal be available as a package?

Hi Robert-

How do I explain that this laptop works fine with several models of
external monitors and projectors using either the HDMI or miniDP? Those
wouldn't work if these ports were connected to the optimus, right?

Data from second laptop.

I also have an HP dm4-1173cl with intel HD graphics, running 12.04. It
also recognizes the HD20 as OTM 72, but it projects correctly.

Thus, the problem seems to be specific to the combination of the Dell
XPS 14 and Optoma HD20.

Phooey!

[Bug 1112859] [NEW] Optoma HD20 projector recognized but no HDMI signal

2013-02-01 Thread Reece
Public bug reported:

Synopsis: I get No Signal and an otherwise blank screen when
connecting my Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook running 12.10 to Optoma HD20
projectors (we have two). The projector is recognized as connected. This
laptop correctly displays on at least 5 other models of external
monitors and projectors over HDMI without issue. Several Macs are known
to work fine with these projectors.

Hardware Details:
The laptop is a Dell XPS Ultrabook (L421X) running 12.10. This laptop has Intel
4000 and NVIDIA 630M graphics, and lsmod shows nouveau and i915 drivers loaded.
This model has both HDMI and mini DisplayPort; results are identical for HDMI
and the mini DP port (with miniDP-HDMI adapter).

The projector is the Optoma HD20. This projector has two HDMI inputs and
native 1920x1600 projection. We have two of them, and all behaviors
described here are identical for both of them.

Description:Ubuntu 12.10

What I've tried:

When I plug the projector into my laptop, the projector is recognized
quickly as OTM 72 in Settings Displays, but the projector declares
No Signal and has blank display. (Is OTM 72 right?) Xorg.0.log shows
frame buffer allocations that seem sensible based on laptop and selected
projector resolutions. Clicking Apply leads to the 30s timeout dialog
in which the laptop display is fine (i.e., not garbled) but the
projector says no signal.

Both projectors work fine with Macs.

I have tried multiple cable and cable lengths.

I have tried multiple resolutions, with and without mirroring.

http://harts.net/reece/tmp/optoma-hd20.edid-decode contains the edid
info generated by edid-decode
/sys/devices/pci\:00/\:00\:02.0/drm/card0/card0-HDMI-A-1/edid .

12.04.1 LTS behaves similarly.

Rebooting with the projector connected has the same effect.

I've tried the xrandr and gtf suggestions at
http://askubuntu.com/questions/216075/no-hdmi-output-on-12-10-intel-hd-
graphics-ironlake/249593#249593 without success.

2012-11-11 Thread Reece
Removing virtualbox (#45) does not appear to affect wine installation. I
removed virtualbox, tried installing wine, and got exactly the same
error as reported by others.

Ubuntu 12.10, upgraded from 12.04.1, amd64.

[Bug 913296] [NEW] alt+tab does not work with drag and drop

2012-01-07 Thread Reece H. Dunn
Public bug reported:

Use Case:

Dragging movie/audio files from nautilus to totem.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. open totem media player full screen
2. open nautilus full screen
3. browse to media files
4. select some media files (e.g. a movie file) and move it to start a drag and
drop operation
5. press Alt+Tab

Observations:

Nothing happens.

Expected Results:

Alt+Tab should allow the user to switch tasks and preserve the drag
state, so the user can drag files from one application to another.

Notes:

Drag and drop works if the applications are tiled to the left/right of
each other, or if they are windowed so it should work when they are full
screen.

[Bug 913300] [NEW] launcher items disabled when dragging files

2012-01-07 Thread Reece H. Dunn
Public bug reported:

Use Case:

Dragging movie/audio files from nautilus to totem.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. open totem media player full screen
2. open nautilus full screen
3. browse to media files
4. select some media files (e.g. a movie file) and move it to start a drag and
drop operation
5. drag the items over to the launcher

Observations:

The launcher items transition from enabled to disabled, so the user
cannot select any.

Expected Results:

The user should be able to hover over a launcher item (e.g. an existing
totem instance) and have that item activate so they can drop the files
onto the playlist.

Notes:

Drag and drop works if the applications are tiled to the left/right of
each other, or if they are windowed so it should work when they are full
screen.

[Bug 655761] Re: [gm45] caps-lock light got inverted meaning

2011-11-15 Thread Reece
Env: Oneiric, daily updates, Unity

My caps lock light is occasionally inverted as well.

I typically use an external keyboard. Pressing caps lock on the external
keyboard does not toggle the light, but does toggle the caps lock text
entry. Therefore, when the indicator meaning is inverted, one can press
the caps lock key on the external keyboard to synchronize the indicator
and caps lock.

I don't know my caps lock indicator becomes inverted. An inadvertently
keypress (i.e., human error) is possible, but it happens more often than
I might expect for that cause.

[Bug 890096] Re: icon text on the desktop is unreadable using a dark/black background

2011-11-14 Thread Reece H. Dunn
This behaviour is dependent on the graphics driver used and
configuration, and there are other associated issues.

The system (a laptop) has its own display (A) and is connected to an
external display (B) and has an NVidia graphics card.

1. nouveau driver (either or both displays active)

Works in this case (text rendered white with a black shadow and is
readable in all background configurations); nautilus renders correctly.

2. nvidia without custom Xorg configuration (display A enabled, display
B disabled)

Works as (1).

3. nvidia with custom Xorg configuration (display A disabled, display B
enabled)

Displays an error on startup and nautilus and other GTK+3 apps do not
use the selected theme (render in a Win9x-style 2.5D theme).
