[Bug 1900686] Re: Missing files in tex-common caus updmap to fail

2020-10-26 Thread Reiner Jung
After some digging. I found a file /etc/texmf/updmap.cfg and removed it.
I also search and purged all packages which put anything in a texmf
folder on my system. Subsequently, I could install texlive again.

So my current working theory is that the /etc/texmf/updmap.cfg should be
removed/replaced during the upgrade.

[Bug 1900686] Re: Missing files in tex-common caus updmap to fail

2020-10-23 Thread Reiner Jung
The key issue with this bug is that you cannot install texlive on Ubuntu 20.10.
texlive -> texlive-base -> tex-common

As this is a vital software component for many users, I would suggest to
address this issue rather quickly.

[Bug 1712283] Re: Cannot resolve DNS in artful daily

2017-09-27 Thread Reiner Jung
I have the same issue. A couple of month ago we had a similar issue, which
could be fixed by "downgrading" the resolver setup for systemd. However, the
issue returned a couple of days ago.
In general networking works after start up, but stops after a random time
period. When I "turn off" the connection and then turn it on again, it works
again for some time before it breaks down again.

This only affects DNS, as media streams and running connections are not
affected. The time interval range from 1-2 minutes up to an hour.

[Bug 1672698] Re: Broken/Missing font rendering in firefox

2017-04-18 Thread Reiner Jung
Hi folks,

the solution provided by Georg works. It is definitely roboto-unhinted.
I checked that with Youtube and Zenodo which both work now. To disable
site-specific fonts is not really a solution, as it ruins the design.
However, the browser should automatically use a replacement font.
Therefore, this is also an upstream issue.

Thanks AM and Georg for the fix ;-)
Reiner

I opened firefox remotely on my workstation and exported the display to

an xserver issue.

[Bug 1672698] Re: Broken/Missing font rendering in firefox

2017-04-13 Thread Reiner Jung
I am adding lists of installed packages of my local machine, which has
no font problem and my workstation (remote). There are differences in
the list of installed fonts, but they are all supplemental fonts.
Anyway, maybe it has to do with something else.

Hi mike, I have tried that with Firefox 50.1 with the same result. Even
stranger on my other machine at home, I use the same setup and it works
perfectly.

The screenshots seem to have the red and blue channels switched, but
that is another bug.

Anyway, I tested the issue with Firefox 50.1.0+build2-0ubuntu1 and the
issue remains. However, the issue does not appear in chromium and the
gnome/ubuntu-webbrowser.

[Bug 1672698] [NEW] Broken/Missing font rendering in firefox

2017-03-14 Thread Reiner Jung
Public bug reported:

On some websites,e.g., https://zenodo.org and https://www.youtube.com
the text is not visible on the site. However, when selecting all
(CTRL-a) and copying the text to an text editor, the proper text is
available. Therefore, the text is not rendered or using an strange font
without any glyphs in it. I repeated this with the usually not used
"Guest Account". Hence it is not an issue with my personal setting.

The issue appeared when upgrading to Ubuntu Zesty (17.04). The current
Firefox package install is 52.0+build2-0ubuntu0.16.10.1

I will downgrade not to 50.1.0+build2-0ubuntu1 to reexamine the issue.

[Bug 1628506] Re: Dual monitor - screen flashes and turns black on mouse movement and keyboard input

2016-10-12 Thread Reiner Jung
Finally, I had time to test it with linux 4.8.0-040800.201610022031
amd64 and with the 4.8.0-22 versions. In both cases the problem still
exists. However, the content of the black rectangle has changed. It now
includes the first line of the console frame buffer (in a slightly
distorted way).

The bug #1611124
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/1611124 might be
related, as I get the same error with
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/kbl_guc_ver9_14.bin for module
i915
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/bxt_guc_ver8_7.bin for module

Yes, it started after upgrading to the current kernel. I will try to use
the upstream kernel and I will try to create a bootable USB-stick with a
fresh install. I hope, I have time to make the tests during this week.

Kind regards

[Bug 1565842] Re: biber removes texlive-bibtex-extra

2016-04-13 Thread Reiner Jung
I have investigated this a little bit and removed biber 2.3-1 which allows to
upgrade texlive-bibtex-extra. Subsequently I have installed biber 2.4 from the
original biber web page http://biblatex-biber.sourceforge.net/
Unfortunately, in this combination the biber output is not compilable with
pdflatex. Biber 2.3 refuses to process the biblatex files.

[Bug 1303264] Re: [Samsung NP-NC10-JP06DE] suspend/resume failure

2014-04-23 Thread Reiner Jung
Hi Christopher,

thank you for investigating this issue. My netbook runs on Ubuntu and
there is no Windows installed on the device. Therefore, I am (presently)
not able to perform a BIOS update following the sources you provided.
Samsung only provides an Windows 7 executable, which seams to be an BIOS
updater, downloading the proper image. At least it tells me that it
cannot download the necessary information. I'll try to get around this
obstacle, but it will take some time.

Kind regards
Reiner

[Bug 1222602] Re: [gen3] Bad performance on GMA950 and GMA3150

2013-09-28 Thread Reiner Jung
I have tried the solution from comment #6 and it works. It would be
helpful to understand why this works. Digging through the comments it
looks like mesa uses not the GPU acceleration when the variable is not
set. This looks like a design error in mesa. Maybe mesa developers
should be asked about this. However, I have tried gnome-shell (before
adding the environment setting) and it worked like a charm indicating
that gnome-shell sets this variable on its own or initializes mesa
differently. Considering gnome-shell was freaking slow compared to unity
in 13.04. there must have been a not so wise change in unity.

I have tested the latest proposed compiz, mesa etc. package and it is
faster than reported in #1206397, but logout dialog is still incredible
slow and the side bar sluggishness is still present. And the HUD and
lenses is still so slow that it can not be used.

[Bug 1206397] [NEW] Unusable slow UI sidebar, lenses etc

2013-07-30 Thread Reiner Jung
Public bug reported:

I have a netbook with a dual core atom CPU and intel graphics (a samsung
NC10) with 2 GB RAM. It was working perfectly with Ubuntu 13.04.
However, in Ubuntu 13.10 the performance of the UI decreased
significantly.

If I open the sidebar (moving mouse to the left) and move the mouse over
the icons a tool tip appears. In 13.04 this tool tip appears promptly.
In 13.10 it can take up to 20 seconds to appear. When then the mouse is
moved to the next icon, it happens again. The worst thing I can do is
clicking on the lenses icon (top most icon), which then tries to open
the lens, which takes ages to open. To be precise, I killed compiz when
accidentally when I click on the search. I tried waiting for 20 minutes,
but that seams to be not enough time to open the lens. System load
during this opening operation is close to 100%.

If I try to shutdown the system, and click in the system menu on
shutdown a dialog should pop up in the center of the screen. However,
this thing takes at least 5-10 minutes to open and be clickable. CPU
load is also at 100%.

I assume that this might be some bug in the rendering engine. I don't
think that it is a problem with software rendering, because such CPU
based rendering should be faster than less then 1 frame per second.

I would like to help to debug this issue, however, as I am not a compiz
and unity developer, I do not have any useful approach available.

[Bug 639729] Re: Eclipse crashes

2013-04-18 Thread Reiner Jung
Have the same error with eclipse. As far as I can see, it happens in
some WebKITGTK stuff. in conjuction with libsoup-2.4

The trouble started after switching to 13.04. It worked all fine under
12.10. The problem can be reproduced in a Java project. In the following
way.

1. Have an empty "desktop" in eclipse to avoid other parts to trigger the bug
2. Open the Java-editor with a Java file in it
3. You may scroll around and even cut and past stuff in.
4. However, if you trigger context information by moving the mouse over
elements. It is suffice to click (left mouse button) on a class or method name
to trigger the effect.

I use Eclipse Juno 4.2.2
The problem can be reproduced with
- OpenJDK 6
- OpenJDK 7

[Bug 553301] Re: Music synced to iPod touch does not appear on device

2010-12-10 Thread Reiner Jung
I have a similar problem. While uploading music to an iPhone 3G the new
files are uploaded which can be seen in rhythmbox or any other music
player, but not by the iPhone-music-player itself. Already present files
also disappear from the iPhone-music-player.

This behaviour can be reproduced on iOS 3.x and iOS 4.x on my iPhone 3G.

This problem can also be reproduced by other people regarding to
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1046#post1046

The interesting thing is, that using banshee the sync works.

[Bug 540280] Re: openssh (or gvfs) asks for a password everytime I change directory in sftp

2010-07-09 Thread Reiner Jung
Very strange: I was able to fix this by uninstalling nautilus-bzr and
the problem reappeared after installing nautilus-bzr.

I performed the following test:
1. Open a sftp mounted volume (got asked for the PW) when hitting ENTER three
times I get access to the volume
The .xsession-errors (bzr-installed-log.txt) shows some python errors and
permission denied entries
2. then I uninstalled nautilus-bzr
3. killall nautilus (which results in a respawn of nautilus)
4. Open a ftp mounted volume. And the system just shows the volume (no log
entries are produced)
5. Reinstalled nautilus-bzr => the error reappears

[Bug 540280] Re: openssh (or gvfs) asks for a password everytime I change directory in sftp

2010-07-09 Thread Reiner Jung
I am experiencing this on a 64-bit installation even after a clear
install. So it might be a 64 bit problem. However, I have no clues how
to analyze this problem. Is there any information available which
explains the auth stuff of gvfs and gnome-keyring/ssh etc.

[Bug 430962] [NEW] package courier-mta (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2009-09-16 Thread Reiner Jung
Public bug reported:

The courier-mta package failed to install (so for now I switched back to
postfix as an mta). Parallel to the install attempt, I got the following on
syslog and mail.log:

Sep 16 21:28:31 berlin courierfilter: /var/run/courier/courierfilter.pid:

As courier runs as root, this looks strange.

[Bug 411564] Re: gimp_xcf.py crashed with TypeError in effect()

2009-09-05 Thread Reiner Jung
I have the same error with my inkscape version in karmic alpha 4 and now
alpha 5. The problem occurs when using text in drawings and I move away
from inkscape to another desktop. Example:

I am working on a state chart drawing on desktop 5, while OpenOffice is
on desktop 4. So I have to switch between these tow screens. When I
switch from 5 to 4 inkscape produces a crash message "" which can be
acknowledged and then I can continue. When I clicked away 5-10 messages
(which also involves clicking away 5-10 apport report dialogs) inkscape
freezes.

However, the problem cannot be reproduced easily. Therefore I added my
drawing causing the effect.

[Bug 412408] [NEW] [Dell Inc. Vostro1510] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia wl]

2009-08-12 Thread Reiner Jung
Public bug reported:

I closed the lid and this should normally trigger the suspend mode.
However, only the screen blanked and a white blinking cursor was shown
in the upper left corner (console). After reopening the lid, the laptop
did not resume. Also hitting keys did not help.

I guess while the system was not perfectly suspended the resume didn't
kick in correctly.

[Bug 409244] [NEW] [Dell Inc. Vostro1510] suspend/resume failure [non-free: wl nvidia]

2009-08-05 Thread Reiner Jung
Public bug reported:

The suspend and the hibernate feature worked more reliable with 9.04.
That's why I started using them. However, in the alpha release of 9.10
resuming from suspend fails occasionally. So I assume it is some sort of
race condition.

resuming properly.

Transmission crashes often, but it is indeed difficult to get suitable
debug information, because the crashes are randomly. Somestimes it works
for days. However, it crashes more often when the properties dialog is
open and you change things in the files section. Right now I started it
in gdb in the hope to get more information.

[Bug 213053] Re: Totem is 'uninterruptible'

2008-05-21 Thread Reiner Jung
I ran in the same problem.
Ubuntu 8.04
totem 2.22.1
gstreamer 0.10.18

The process hang when I tried to exit totem while playing a movie.
Video stream:
  DivX MPEG-4 Version 5
  512 x 384
Audio stream:
  MPEG 1 Audio, Layer 3
  Stereo
  44100 Hz
  96 kbps

Killing with kill -9 did not work. The played file was a local file on a
ext3 formatted drive. IMHO I think the problem is somewhere in the
device driver either ext3 or in the block driver itself. However dmesg
and all log files do not reveal any additional information. Therefore I
assume no detectable crash or error happened.

Another possible problem could be associated with the audio or video
output. The audio is controlled by pulseaudio on my system and the sound
events still worked after totem got into this interruptible state.
Therefore I assume the video-output (xv) can also be guilty part.

Because it is so hard to reproduce the bug (I just had this problem
twice in the last weeks), I guess it is some sort of race condition.

The kernel is: Linux helsinki 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10
13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

For more information have a look at the lsmod, lspci and xorg.conf

Maybe some can come up with a way to reproduce this bug with this
information.

[Bug 149359] Re: Problem with gpg-agent and seahorse

2007-10-05 Thread Reiner Jung
that didn't work. But I found an entry in .gnupg/gpg.conf where the file
path for the agent was explicitly set to /tmp/seahorse-4VRcyo/S.gpg-
agent

This is strange, because I didn't configured that. Or at least I don't
know when and how I made that change.

Deleting the line with

gpg-agent-info=/tmp/seahorse-4VRcyo/S.gpg-agent:12345:1

fixed the problem.

[Bug 149359] Problem with gpg-agent and seahorse

2007-10-05 Thread Reiner Jung
Public bug reported:

I get the following result when decrypting a message:

gpg command line and output:
/usr/bin/gpg --charset utf8 --batch --no-tty --status-fd 2 --keyserver-options
auto-key-retrieve --keyserver random.sks.keyserver.penguin.de -d --use-agent

The problem seams to be the missing /tmp/seahorse-4VRcyo/S.gpg-agent
but a file named /tmp/seahorse-z2o2Db/S.gpg-agent exists. So why does enigmail
tries toget the wrong file path?

I also tried to close and reopen thunderbird. But that has no effect.

detailed results are in the attached files. Here a quick summary:

gst-launch-0.10 --verbose playbin uri=ftp://:[EMAIL
PROTECTED]/music/70er/The\ Alan\ Parsons\ Project/The\ Best\ Of\ The\ Alan\
Parsons\ Project/03\ Games\ People\ Play.mp3
Setting pipeline to PAUSED ...
/playbin0/decoder/typefind.src: caps = application/x-id3
Pipeline is PREROLLING ...

after that, the program stops. I waited several minutes, but nothing
happend. In contrast to that, the working file produced the following
output:

gst-launch-0.10 --verbose playbin uri=ftp://:[EMAIL
PROTECTED]/music/KLASSIK/Vivaldi/4\ Jahreszeiten/Frühling\ 1.mp3
Setting pipeline to PAUSED ...
/playbin0/decoder/typefind.src: caps = application/x-id3
/playbin0/selector_audio_src0: active-pad = "sink0"
Pipeline is PREROLLING ...
[...] <= lots of output
Pipeline is PREROLLED ...
Setting pipeline to PLAYING ...
New clock: audioclock0

Hope that helps.

p.s. I surfed the net a little bit about a hang uring prerolling, so far
I've found nothing valueable. :-/

[Bug 84449] Problem adding mp3s to rhythmbox from a remote host.

2007-02-10 Thread Reiner Jung
Public bug reported:

The problem is somewhat strange. It has something to do with gnome-vfs.
Therefore I cannot name one single package. To understand the problem, I
explain the setup first, then I want to tell you what I have already
tried and if possible, I will add a mp3 file which can be used to
reproduce the error.

The Setup

We use a server in our home, where we store all our data including our
music files. The server allows access through samba and ftp (but the
problem can be reproduced also with webdav). For the current problem, I
used ftp access. On the remote side, I use vsftpd on a ubuntu (dapper).
The local machine is running ubuntu 6.10 (edgy).

The Problem

I can login and browse the remote directory with nautilus, and I can
open the property dialog for other files on the server, this includes
mp3 files. But for no reason, I cannot do the same thing for all mp3
files. For some files, nautilus tells me to wait and doesn't bring up
the property dialog at all.

When I try to add the same file to the rhythmbox music database, I get
the gstreamer error "failed to change state". Also I cannot open the
music files with totem.

I've tested gnome-vfs with gnomevfs-ls, gnomevfs-cat and gnomvfs-info.
All three work fine on the files, nautilus, totem and rhythmbox have
problem with.

First I thought that might have something to do with gstreamer, but as
the problem can be reproduced not only with some mp3s, but also with ogg
files, I guess it has to do something with gnome-vfs. The problem cannot
be based on the tool, which created the mp3s(oggs) because files from
the same CD, ripped with the same tool, behave differently. Some work,
others don't. And the strange thing is, you can repeat it, and always
the same files are rejected.

It has nothing to do with permissions, user names or groups, because all
files are owned by the same user and same group, and all files have the
same permissions. The same thing applies to the directories. They are
all "rwx" for the music user.

I also can copy the files from remote to my local machine (with
nautilus). Then I can add them to the music database without any
trouble.

Hope you have more luck in finding the real error. Don't hessitate to
ask me any questions.
