[Bug 1798166] Re: “Mouse battery low” notification can't be disabled

2020-10-17 Thread Renne
The battery warning stays on top window layer all the time and covers
real important warnings and information, e.g. the task bar of a window.

It is worse if you use virtual machines as you e.g. cannot read
notifications like to disable the capture of mouse and keyboard on the
host machine!

[Bug 1821537] Re: Enable kernel options CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK_USB_XDBC and USB_XHCI_DBGCAP for serial Superspeed(+) connections with kernels >= 4.16

2019-03-25 Thread Renne
I suggest to enable CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK_USB_XDBC and USB_XHCI_DBGCAP in
Bionic HWE kernels as this will allow to debug via serial console with a
simple USB 3 crossover-cable (aka "USB 3.0 super-speed A-to-A debugging
cable") without the need of a physical RS-232 interface.

2019-03-24 Thread Renne
@ubuntu-kernel-bot: Missing things can't be logged. ;-)

@all: Don't use simple A-to-A USB cables for USB 3.x slave devices as
they can fry your hardware. See cable specs in section 5.5.2 of the USB
3.0 specification (https://i.stack.imgur.com/YwsX3.png).

[Bug 1821537] [NEW] Enable kernel options CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK_USB_XDBC and USB_XHCI_DBGCAP for serial Superspeed(+) connections with kernels >= 4.16

2019-03-24 Thread Renne
Public bug reported:

Since kernel 4.13 Linux supports an USB debug console with passive USB 3.x
host-to-host cables aka "USB 3.0 super-speed A-to-A debugging cable".
Beginning with kernel 4.16 a serial port (/dev/ttyDbC) has been added
(https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v4.16/driver-api/usb/usb3-debug-port.html#serial-tty).

I suggest to enable USB DbC by enabling the kernel options
"CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK_USB_XDBC=Y" and "USB_XHCI_DBGCAP=Y" in Ubuntu
kernels >= 4.16 for Bionic HWE and newer ubuntu versions.

It would also be great to get feedback about line speed from others as
USB_XHCI_DBGCAP serial ports could be used for network connections via
tun/tap devices or PPP/SLIP.

[Bug 1377653] Re: HDMI sound output not detected / NVIDIA optimus laptop

2017-07-24 Thread Renne
Same result with 378.13-0ubuntu0~gpu17.04.3. The Nvidia audio stack is
not listed with 'sudo lspci -H1'. A 'echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/rescan'
doesn't help either. It seems the audio-stack of the Nvidia-GPU isn't
powered up.

HDMI audio works fine with Win10.

[Bug 995332] Re: Please enhance NetworkManager such that DNSSEC validation is done whenever possible

2014-08-25 Thread Renne
Do NOT use DNSSEC-proxy function of Dnsmasq. The validation is done on a
resolver in the internet. Any attacker can use a Man-In-The-Middle
attack between the DNSSEC-resolver in the internet and Dnsmasq to
manipulate the DNSSEC data. Proxying the DO-/AD-bit lulls the user into
a FALSE sense of security.

DNSSEC-proxying is highly INSECURE!

[Bug 1095498] Re: Printing PDFs with images is hideously slow on HP LaserJet 3030 MFP

2014-08-23 Thread Renne
I have the same slow printing problem with a Dell 3115cn on 14.04 LTS
Desktop 64-bit. A 180-pages printjob with some coloured screenshots
(Samsung TV manual) needs 2-3 hours on Ubuntu but only 15 minutes on
Windows7 (WSD). The same problem occurs when I convert the PDF to PS
with "pdftops" and copy it into the printers ramdisk via FTP. pdftops
bloats the 6 MByte PDF to 100 MByte (PS Level 2) or 200 MByte (PS Level
3).

So the problem is definitely the broken Postscript conversion and not
CUPS/drivers.
