[Bug 1010554] Re: System suddenly freezes: hard reset needed
UPDATE! This week I had some more freezes BUT it seems it was hadrware related!. Something with the Sata cable of the HD. The PC didn't boot into Ubuntu and was showing hundreds of I/O errors. Once I changed the cable, boot was ok. I don't know if in this cases (similar errors, but after boot success) the OS could do anything (wich was what I expected, as told before) and maybe this is the cause of the problem, since it was related to I/O too. Let's see if I'll get any freezes now. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1010554 Title: System suddenly freezes: hard reset needed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1010554/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1010554] [NEW] System suddenly freezes: hard reset needed
Public bug reported: I'm getting Frequently freezes on Ubuntu, usually when I'm browsing the web. For now I can say that I was using almost all the RAM memory and was high on I/O activity just before the system hung. At first I thought the problem maybe was Chromium's, since almost all the time I was using it. Recently I was trying Firefox (so I could test this hipothesis) and BANG! Same thing happened. Maybe the problem isn't related to OS, but the fact that I can't to do anything but a hard reset makes me feel (besides angry) the OS should offer a last resort to the user, so one could at least try to kill a suspect process. In my case, all the time it happens, I try to open system monitor or a terminal window without success: the PC doesn't seem to listen. Some times even the CAPSLOCK light can't change state when I press that key. The only thing I could do (a couple of times) was getting to terminal through ctrl+alt+fn, but it took a long time after the keypress and, once there, each character took several seconds to print on the screen. One of the times I even ended getting a login time out warning, since the system didn't finish fast enough the login process. I'll try to get more precise and useful information as soon as I know how to do it, so I can help more. [Bug 609716] Re: Ubuntu stops responding
I think I'm affected by this bug too. What I can say about it, plus the info already here, is that it seems it's related to high RAM usage or I/O activity. I'm observing that almost all the times it occurs when I'm on Chromium and using almost all the available RAM. Suddenly, BANG! Hard reset needed (or plenty of patience to wait indefinitely). Of course Chromium is a principal suspect here (I'll keep using Firefox for a while, so I can test this), but in my opinion the OS needs to be free of such things and Ubuntu should keep a last resort I could use, at least a way for me to open system monitor and close any suspect I have. I tried going to terminal so I could try to kill Chromium (the suspect) but even on terminal the system is unresponsive (it took me almost 10 minutes after I pressed the keys ctrl+alt+Fn and getting to terminal). Once I'm there, even to type a character takes many seconds. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/609716 Title: Ubuntu stops responding To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/609716/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 849049] [NEW] entire system freezes after turning the microsoft HD webcam on through stopmotion
Public bug reported: Runing programs: Amarok amule Transmission Pidgin Chromium After I started stopmotion and clicked the botton for turning on the webcam (Microsoft HD) there were intence HD activity and the system got gradually slow until I was unable to open anything.
