[Bug 1280839] Re: Touchpad / Trackpoint does not work on fresh install of 13.10 on Toshiba Portege Z10t-A kernel-bug-exists-upstream

2014-06-02 Thread Richard Brown
I managed to get basic functionality by enabling the HID_MULTI_INPUT
quirk for the device:

sudo rmmod usbhid sudo modprobe -v usbhid
quirks=0x0930:0x0807:0x0040

If you do this the touchpad and trackpoint is just recognised as a basic
mouse (but better than nothing!). The clickpad buttons don't work, but
the trackpoint buttons do.

This device should be using the synaptics driver but I don't know how to
do that

To the best of my knowledge, no.

Perhaps if I get time in the weekend, I'll do clean installs of 13.04
and 13.10 to check for sure. My main environment is 12.04, and it
certainly does not happen there.

[Bug 1209032] Re: [LENOVO 4298CTO] suspend/resume failure

2013-08-07 Thread Richard Brown
I updated the BIOS to 1.39 and the bug is still present. I didn't
describe it very well initially, but I can now reproduce it reliably. If
I put the computer to sleep in its docking station, remove it from the
dock, and then wake it up, the indicator lights come on but I get a
black screen that I can't get out of without doing a hard reset.

I'm not sure whether it's related, but I get about 10 or so crash
notifications every time I boot up and log in.

The only things connected to the dock are an AC adapter, CD/DVD writer,
and ethernet cable. The bug does not occur if I put it to sleep with AC
adapter plugged in to the computer itself, unplug it, and wake it up
(i.e. without the dock).

[Bug 1155327] Re: skype crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc@plt()

2013-05-07 Thread Richard Brown
Posting just in case anyone has the same experience I had

I thought the fixed skype wasn't working for me on 13.04 (was continuing
to segfault), but then noticed eventually that when my system was
upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04, the Partner repository had not been
updated to raring, and so it was installing skype for the wrong distro.
In particular I had 4.1.0.20.0-0ubuntu0.12.04.2 installed and it took me
a long time to notice the 12 where there should have been a 13!

Correcting the distro to raring brought in the fixed skype.

[Bug 1167114] Re: Ubuntu Kernel 3.5.0-27 does not boot

2013-04-17 Thread Richard Brown
I think, the solution from #61 Johnson is so far the most effective one.
Plus it's really a good idea to just revert to an older version of
kernel and wait for the ubuntu guys to fix the problem. It is really
helpful for me with a Thinkpad W530!

what I did is:
1. change BIOS confiuration to use integrated graphic card
2. reboot (from any kernel)
3. remove the kernel version 27 from Synaptic
4. change the BIOS back to NVIDIA graphic card
5. Reboot using kernel 26. (it is strange that the kernel 27 is still in my
grub list)

Hope this will be helpful!

[Bug 1042054] Re: ThinkPad X220 does not boot 12.10 without hardware wireless kill switch being enabled

2012-10-22 Thread Richard Brown
Re: #8, I was seeing this problem with development quantal releases on
my x220t which doesn't have a WWAN modem, so I don't think that's the
issue.

Due to this and other issues, I eventually removed the quantal install
and did a fresh install of the final release when it came out. I've been
running it for four days now and haven't *yet* observed the problem ...

I've tested 3.5 final and 3.6rc1. It is as you predicted, the bug exists
on 3.5 final, but is fixed in 3.6rc1.

By the way, for anyone else testing this, if you boot into a working
kernel after having been in a not-working one, touch/pen won't initially
work. Putting the laptop to sleep and waking it up again seems to
reliably get it going again.

It's the built in device (embedded in the screen). Is there something
equivalent I can do?

[Bug 1033783] [NEW] Wacom stylus and touch not recognised on Lenovo X220t

2012-08-06 Thread Richard Brown
Public bug reported:

The wacom touch and pen digitisers are not working on Quantal at all.
The USB device shows up as

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 056a:0094 Wacom Co., Ltd

on lsusb, but if I type xinput list, the touch, pen, and eraser inputs
do not show up. The Wacom Graphics Tablet tool reports that there is no
tablet connected.

The problem has been present throughout pretty much the entire release I
think. It works fine under Precise.

[Bug 985975] Re: [wacom]: won't calibrate X220t

2012-07-03 Thread Richard Brown
@Timo: I couldn't install the .deb due to dependency issues (it also
wanted a newer version of libwacom-common, and when I tried to install
that there were further problems). Was I doing it wrong?

I tried installed Alpha 2 on a new partition and updating it to test it
that way, but Alpha 2 currently doesn't recognise the hardware at all.
So jury is still out as to whether this will work or not.

[Bug 985975] Re: [wacom]: won't calibrate X220t

2012-06-30 Thread Richard Brown
@Razvan. It's low priority because there are other ways to calibrate the
tablet (but not as pleasant as a decent gui).

The method I use is to manually set the Area parameter using xsetwacom
- making small iterative adjustments until I get a decent calibration.
Because of the edge effects on the x220t, I find this works better than
the values returned by xinput-calibrator (but you should perhaps try
this too). If you want further help getting it working, let me know

[Bug 836250] Re: [Oneiric] [Regression] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops

2012-06-20 Thread Richard Brown
@Paulo, thanks for the suggestion to disable ipv6 in the kernel boot
line. I couldn't connect to the router I'm currently on (at my
university), but since disabling ipv6 I now can. I also have 11n
disabled. The connection seems to occasionally drop, but picks straight
back up again. And I no longer have tens of thousands of invalid misc
in the iwconfig line. Has anyone else had success with disabling ipv6?

[Bug 916253] Re: ThinkPad x220 Multi-touch Wacom ISDv4 E6 Finger touch not supported

2012-05-29 Thread Richard Brown
If you disable the xinput device corresponding to your touch screen

xinput set-prop 'Wacom ISDv4 E6 Finger touch' 'Device Enabled' 0

then you can do the finger painting like in that video

sudo mtview /dev/input/wacom-touch

I don't know how to connect it to utouch though - any ideas?

Hi Timo

That didn't change anything (after reboot) - there is still no action
when I click the calibrate button. Is there some script that needs to be
run to pick up the change? I checked that the usb address matches (it
does).

[Bug 836250] Re: [Oneiric] [Regression] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops

2012-05-17 Thread Richard Brown
For me wicd also seems to work much better than Network Manager, thanks
for the suggestion.

I've now had an N connection running at my university for almost half an
hour at speeds between 80 and 120 Mb/s (WPA2 PEAP/MSCHAPV2). Tx
excessive retries is, however, in the tens of thousands, but at least
the connection is maintaining speed and isn't dropping out (or refusing
to connect at all) which is what happens under Network Manager.

I had almost resigned myself to using Win 7 exclusively on my laptop for
this reason - maybe now I don't have to!

[Bug 985975] [NEW] Wacom Graphics Tablet pane of System Settings won't calibrate X220t

2012-04-19 Thread Richard Brown
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo X220T with the multitouch/pen tablet display.

The utility recognises the tablet -- it shows a picture of a notebook
with Wacom ISDv4 E6 Pen displayed above it. The Pen settings
(pressure, etc.) work fine, but the calibrate button does nothing
(except think for about 0.5 seconds). Previously this caused the system
to crash, but it no longer does.

It no longer crashes, but it still doesn't do anything when I click the

2012-04-15 Thread Richard Brown
It seems to be happening to me on pretty much a daily basis now. And I
think it's always associated with Matlab in some way.

It could possibly be when I've launched Matlab with a different display
configuration than last time I launched it. I was using Matlab on my
laptop at home, and then when I launched it with my laptop docked with a
secondary display this morning, the lockup occured immediately. It
required a full reboot to resolve the issue, logging in and out was not
sufficient.

[Bug 339648] Re: recordmydesktop produces Broken pipe: Overrun occurred in Kubuntu Jaunty with HDA Intel

2011-04-01 Thread Richard Brown
@Bill: I can confirm the problem that you are having. I'm recording ~50
minute screencasts (lectures for a course at University of Canterbury
where the contact hours have dropped significantly after the
Christchurch earthquake) , and as often as not the sound drops out
completely 30-40 minutes in, which is VERY frustrating, especially as
recordmydesktop gives no indication that there has been a problem, I
only discover it when I try to play the video. I use it from the command
line with 100% video and sound quality.

I'm glad to hear it doesn't appear to be a resource issue though, as I'm
using a slow laptop - an HP2710p with Maverick (1.2GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB).

I'm not certain that it is the same bug as this one though.

[Bug 261016] [NEW] intrepid xserver only starts if boot via recovery option

2008-08-24 Thread Richard Brown
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I upgraded my hp2710p (Intel 965 graphics) from a working Hardy install
to intrepid alpha 4, and am having all sorts of display problems.

When I boot, I get the Ubuntu splash screen, but my display turns off
before I hit the login screen. Things still work, as I can log in - I
hear the login sounds, and can reboot blind via a console (CTRL-ALT F1,
login, sudo reboot) - so long as I get the keystrokes right. The closing
down progress bar then reappears at this point.

If I boot via the recovery option, and choose Resume Normal Boot,
everything works just fine. Note: I used the fix X option in recovery
mode earlier, to get rid of my custom xorg.conf - it had extra entries
for the 2710p's tablet, but the problem persists. The new xorg.conf has
virtually nothing in it (I think by design now)

[Bug 145896] Re: 640x480 Only After Install of Gutsy Tribe5, Compaq C500t, Intel 945 Chipset, Celeron, 512K

2007-10-02 Thread Richard Brown
I can confirm this behaviour on my Dell Inspiron 6000 (Intel 915
graphics). Live CD doesn't detect the correct resolution of 1280x800 (it
chooses 1024x768) and when I choose this 1280x800 (from the Plug'n'Play
monitor), it incorrectly writes 640x480 as the only available res. into
xorg.conf, which shows up on X restarting.

dpkg-reconfigure does detect the correct resolution, and fixes this.

Curious as to why the native resolution wasn't detected correctly in the
first place, as it has been since at least Dapper

[Bug 147382] Gutsy beta: resolution reverts to 640x480 after reboot and can't be changed

2007-09-30 Thread Richard Brown
Public bug reported:

Running a Dell Inspiron 6000 - Intel 915 built in graphics, 1280x800
laptop display.

Sequence of events to duplicate problem:
* Gutsy beta Live CD incorrectly sets resolution to 1024x768, but I ignore
this for now. (this hasn't happened in previous releases though)
* Once installed, it boots into 1024x768 as expected. I adjust this
successfully to 1280x800 using the new screens and graphics GUI
* On all successive reboots, the resolution is 640x480, and the other supported
resolutions are gone from the menu. The startup progress bar is at the correct
resolution, the problem occurs when X starts.

What additional information do I need to submit? (fairly new user)
